upper 30s at half moon bay and if we head to the peninsula, you can see widespread 30s and 40s. if it is a chilly morning outside your door and you're thinking perhaps a fire and fireplace, not a good idea. we have a winter spare the air day in store and the reading just above 100 in areas over parts of the north bay, inner east bay as well as the santa clara valley. if you're sensitive or have asthma, just be aware of that, at least for the afternoon and limit outdoor activity and exercise you do in the outside areas. san jose hit 67 yesterday.

final scheduled game at candlestick park. alex is inside the park. >>reporter: we're on the field this morning inside candlestick park ahead of what will likely be the last game the 49ers will ever play inside this stadium. this is a look at the south end zone. the field is all painted and everything set for tonight's matchup against the falcons, and it will be a memorable game no matter the outcome and certainly a special game for the folks lucky enough to be in the stands later on tonight. the final game for the 49ers potentially here at candlestick park and a lot of incredible sports moments have played out on this field. after five decades, of course the stadium has seen better days. a lot of fans agree it's time for an upgrade, moving to santa clara, but for a lot of fans it's difficult to say good-bye to this place. this past weekend many sports

fans had to pay tribute to this one of a kind stadium. we saw people yesterday standing outside snapping photos of candlestick park and taking time to remember some of their favorite moments. so many moments took place here. now of course the end of an era and many fans paying tribute to the stick. >> it's a little bit of a relic, but it's still standing, more than just a building or stadium. it's a home. >>reporter: there are fans lucky enough to take a piece of history home. season tickets holders are paying $1,000 to actually be able to hang onto the seat they sat in during all the games here at candlestick. we ran into a couple yesterday that will be buying four of their seats from candlestick park and actually putting them

in their front yard. anyone else who is thinking about hanging onto a piece of memorabilia, maybe trying to pry off a piece of the stadium here later on during tonight's game, you want to make sure you're aware that san francisco police will be on the lookout for anyone trying to steal anything from the stadium. there will be a lot of police officers in uniform and undercover tonight. there is a slight possibility of a playoff game at candlestick, depending what happens during the next week. that long shot scenario would result in a divisional playoff game for the 49ers after a first round bye. the 49ers are still battling the seahawks for the nfc west title and the fans have a message for seattle

today for a girl who has been declared braindead after a routine surgery to remove her tonsils, and she suffered a heart attack. her mother says she is not giving up even though doctors say her child has no chance of recovering. >> the doctors think they know everybody, but if they knew everybody my daughter wouldn't be braindead right now. so that's why i just lean on god and say, whatever you want to do with her i'll let you do, but i children's hospital to do it. >> several bay area pastors are joining the fight to keep the little girl on life support, calling for a grand jury investigation to find out what happened during surgery. this morning's hearing began at 9:30. a rally in march of support is being held at the same time as the hearing, people meeting marching through oakland. organizers are asking people to

wear purple shirts, her favorite color. since her death many questions raised about the need for ton sillectomies. some doctors say it's the most effective way to treat sleep apnea in children, others say the jump in the numbers are an epidemic and national embarrassment. an early morning shooting in san francisco's neighborhood leaving a man critically injured at 1:15 near a nightclub on howard street. police say the wounded man was hit in the stomach. so far he hasn't given investigators information on who may have shot him. no arrested have been made. several people are dead after a bizarre mix of weather triggered tornados, snow and record setting warm temperatures in various parts of the country. in oklahoma city, shoppers were watching this. sheets of ice falling down off

a roof. look at that. luckily no one was hurt. at least five people died in kentucky as a result of heavy flooding there. then a tornado touched down in arkansas killing at least one person. this bizarre weather is affecting holiday travel. a lot of people ended up stranded in airports and they say the airlines aren't doing much to make the inconvenience easier to deal with. >> the reason was because it was weather related, not mechanical. they only give you hotels if it's a mechanical delay. >> the storm has knocked down electric power this many parts of the nation. this morning several hundred people in eastern canada still without power after an electrical explosion. the storms across the u.s. could put a damper on holiday travel. thousands are traveling by car, train and jet.

sfo is already busy. >>reporter: no doubt about that. we did get in touch with officials, and the good news, no major delays, but it's just the morning. we talked about the east coast storm that could have a rip effect. i do want to show you the line here, which is pretty long. as we mentioned, the holiday rush is on. there were minor delays yesterday, but this morning everything on time, but still plan on arriving early. it's clear here at the bay area in terms of weather, but if you're traveling the east coast, you need to keep an eye on your flight.

more than 1 million americans have signed up on the exchanges, and those numbers far lower than initial projections. officials are bracing for a rush of people trying to sign up today and say they are ready. the republican critics say there have been too many problems leading up to today's big deadline. >> obama care causes people to spend more, have less choice, higher deductible and less freedom. >> some democrats agree about some of the problems, and a democratic senator has proposed a solution. new information on his plan to delay some parts of obama care. nato has said an attack in eastern afghanistan killed one of its service members. a statement from the u.s. led coalition says the soldier decide after coming into direct

fire. the identity of the soldiers has not been released. it's now believed that all americans have now been evacuated from the violence in south sudan. the last american citizens, many of them sudanese, were evacuated yesterday. that's after another rescue attempt on saturday had to be aborted when u.s. military aircraft came under fire. four u.s. troops were hurt in the attack. in the meantime thousands of sudanese are crowding into united nations compounds trying to escape the violence. >> we've got a considerable number of people that we're mandated to protect, and we're doing that to the best of our ability. we're going to send it over to the traffic. it sounds like there's trouble up in the north bay. >> that's right. in santa rosa we have a three

freezing fog and what it means is moisture could actually settle. when it gets on the objects below freezing, it could make the roadways a little slick. we'll be tracking that throughout the morning, but it's not very widespread. again, just a few patches of fog. visibility down to about a half mile. i want to get to the eastern half of the nation. a few scattered snow showers reported for kansas, but this is where the winter storm is going to slowly pull out for the afternoon. you can see snow still over parts of maine, a rain/snow mix over parts of massachusetts. the carolinas stretching down into the south as well as parts of georgia. here at home again santa rosa one of the chillier sports, 32

there was gunfire after people argued about their place in line. on a lighter note, santa made an appearance in oakland this week and made a lot of children very happy santa and his sidekick handed out hundreds of gifts. the two started this toy drive five years ago creating a website. people can send in their donations. >> my friends and family and people just want to give and don't really know how sometimes, so everyone just keeps giving us more and more every year. >> santa say they were able to pass out 400 gifts this holiday

in the union city stretch. if we head over to the peninsula, roadways looking pretty clear. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza. traffic moving nicely into san francisco. no delays. happening today, a court decision may be made about whether a 13-year-old from oakland should be taken off life support after being declared braindead following ton sill surgery. her parents will be in court while supporters gather at oakland's children's hospital. >>reporter: she lays in a hospital bed on a ventilator here at children's hospital, and her family, friends and supporters are going to be down

here rallying, holding a march. they want to bring attention to her polite. right now a temporary restraining order is forcing children's hospital to keep her on life support. doctors declared her braindead and she's been on a ventilator 11 days. she suffered a heart attack after having her tonsils removed. this morning in court the judge will see if both sides have agreed on which doctor will examine in her. local ministers are speaking out in support of the family. >> when you are wrong, you are wrong. you don't need a judge to tell you you're wrong. you need to give the family the opportunity to explore every possibility of remedy. you need to do the right thing. >>reporter: the court hearing

begins at 9:30 a.m. she could be exam independent as soon as today, but an attorney for the parents say even after that they may not accept the doctor's opinion. the family is asking the district attorney's office to conduct a grand jury investigation. there's been no response from the da's office yet. the march is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. everyone is being asked to wear purple, her favorite color. . the end of an era as the 49ers move from candlestick. we have a preview of tonight's historic game. >>reporter: we're in the south end zone. so much touchdowns over the years and incredible memories made here inside the stadium.

fifty years or more of memories and sports history inside cappedle stick park, and tonight potentially the last time the 49ers play on this field. it will be certainly an important game for the team and important game for the fans as well. no matter what happens, it will be a special game for the fans lucky enough to be in the stadium. the last time the 49ers play on this field potentially. this weekend a lot of people came down really just to say good-bye in their own way. a lot of people came by to take photos, took time to remember some of their favorite moments from the stick. a lot of sports history unfolded here inside this stadium as it was the home of the 49ers and san francisco giants for so many years. the san francisco recreation and parks department has been in charge of upkeep for the past 53 years, and it this morning the general manager talked to us a bit about the end of an era. >> it's a very emotional day

for our staff, and our staff are the ones that have taken care of it. we've kept the aging stadium working well past its life. >> for this big game san francisco police will have stepped up security later on tonight and will have more officers than they've ever had on hand here at candlestick park to make sure that everybody celebrates in a safe way. also a word of warning. anyone thinking about snagging a souvenir from candlestick park should think twice. san francisco police say they'll also be on the lookout for anybody trying to steal a piece of the stadium and take it home with them as a piece of makeshift memorabilia. candlestick will be here for about the next year or so. there will be other events to commemorate the end of an era, but eventually the stadium will be demolished a little over a year from right now. we're live this morning inside

thrown away was rescued by workers at a dump in san francisco. take a look. workers were hand sorting trash and they say the puppy nicknamed gem was scared and injured, but seemed otherwise okay. when the puppy was found the workers immediately called animal welfare. >> luckily we stopped the line in time before it actually fell off the belt into the pit where it would have been transferred to our landfills. >> gem now recovering at animal care and control. look at that face. any mall welfare officials want to know what truck she was found on and want to track down the city the little puppy came from. new this morning at 6:39,

changing how first responders respond to mass shootings after a federal security officer was shot and killed at lax. the times reports that police officers will protect paramedics and firefighters as they enter dangerous areas after active shooting incidents. the goal is to treat shooting victims more quickly. a body was found in a shopping center parking lot, the wal-mart on edgewater drive. they're treating the death as a homicide, but have not yet said if the body is that of a man or woman or how the person died. police are investigating a deadly shooting of i 34-year- old man. he was found in a parking lot of an apartment complexion redwood. if you have any information, call police. a bullet hits a teenager

a plane skidded off a taxiway in detroit. that plane slid onto the grass a couple hours ago. no injuries reported. luckily all 180 passen guess were taken to the terminal and a rescheduled flight is expected to take off in about 15 minutes. several deaths blamed on the severe winter weather hitting 35 states around the country. freezing rain and ice, snow and a tornado have all been reported. hundreds of people in canada still with no power after the

day yesterday. they anticipate many more today add many are visiting family and friends for the holidays. there were minor delays yesterday, but this morning everything is on time, but still plan on arriving early. the weather clear. keep an eye on your flight. as of last night, many flights cancelled and about 5,000 flights delayed across the country. if they're weather related, many travelers are basically staying at the airport overnight.

zero terribles say arrive at least an hour early, officials say, and international flights, at least two hours early. people have been taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a tour bus crashed. you can see the live picture of the scene where they're hooking the bus to a tow truck. it happened on the off-ramp on the 10 freeway in the baldwin park area east of los angeles. it went off the road and into a small drainage canal you see right there before hitting a fence. no word on what caused the driver to lose control. 38 people were on the bus. police are searching for a driver suspected of fracturing a pedestrian skull with a pipe. it started as a verbal fight on saturday night when the driver, who was allegedly speeding, nearly hit a 47-year-old man

crossing the street. when the pedestrian told the driver to slow down the driver took a pipe out of his trunk and knocked him unconscious. >> he used force. >> the driver and passenger are being described as white men in their mid 20s. the car was a blue buick or pontiac. a pair of glasses is being credited for saving the life of a teenage girl in seattle. the 16-year-old girl was asleep on the couch saturday night when someone drove by and opened fire. a bullet lodged in the bridge of her nose, but doctors say it could have been worse. she had forgotten to take off her glasses, and she believes it saved her. >> if i didn't have my glasses on, i wouldn't be here. >> i thank god for that. >> investigators say the home

be offering big subsidies or real estate as part of the deal and will be able to avoid an additional environmental impact study. the winning bid is expected to be announced sometime next year and will probably take place in 2017. the data breach at target is stirring lawsuits and high level investigation. two class action lawsuits against the retailer have been filed here in california. there's a third one in oregon. an attorney general in new york, connecticut, massachusetts and south dakota have launched their own investigations to find out when target knew there was a problem. the secret service is also investigating. target has seen the effects inside stores too. analysts say sales numbers for the last weekend before christmas are down more than 3% compared to last year. it comes at a time when other retailers are reporting better sales. experts say the decline might have been bigger, but target

offered a 10% discount saturday and sunday to appeal to people looking to cut holiday costs. looking at the big board, the dow up slightly. we're looking at quite a week with the holiday on wednesday causing the markets to close here. we'll be monitoring that for you through the week. the city coming together saving christmas for a soldier and his family after thieves stole his christmas presents. he was still in afghanistan when his wife called and said someone had broken into their home. they had saved for the biggest christmas ever, spending $5,000 on gifts for their family. thieves broke into their four- year-old's room. >> it's a great town and i've lived here a long time. complete strangers have come together.
