jose. police say it appears they were robbing people throughout the city. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega joins us live from san jose to tell us why police think these crimes are connected. janine? >> reporter: jana, officers finally caught up with these thieves in this neighborhood near blossom hill and snell. now, in all of these cases, police say that the suspect and the -- suspect car description seemed to have matched. now, police say that from about 4:00 yesterday afternoon to 10:30 p.m., there were reports of 7 to 8 robberies. in some of them, the victims reported the suspects were recall armed. the suspects happened from almaden valley, downtown. there was one on the east side. officers say it appears the group was targeting random people in residential and commercial areas. >> for the most part, they were shopping individuals, robbing the individuals of personal items and/or money. that's what they were doing

with force or threat of force. >> reporter: the officers were flagged down and they were able to locate the suspect's car. they arrested two males and two females. out of that group, two of them are juveniles. they are being interviewed by detectives who are investigating whether the rob is responsible for all of the robberies. police say it doesn't appear whether any of the victims are seriously injured. a lieutenant mentioned to me that it's a possibility that there were other -- more thefts than the seven to eight reported and that people have not reported them, they were insignificant or didn't report them. live in san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:06. san jose police are still searching for the smash-and- grab robber who pulled off a bold heist inside the east ridge mall at a little before

6:00 last night when the mall was parked with shoppers. witnesses say the man wore a mask and smashed a glass case at valini jewelers. >> the crowd was panicking. i was scared for my family, for my keds -- kids. >> several stores shut their doors but several opened back up. bay area airports expecting less holiday travelers today. these are live pictures of sfo. we did check in with the three major airports in the bay area. sfo is expecting a busy morning to say things will slow down throughout the day. san jose mineta international airport also expecting a slower day than expected. oakland airport is not expecting delays or problems. we're also live in san francisco. happening now, the last-minute christmas eve shopping rush has begun. these are live pictures of

macy's, san francisco's union square. now, the store there is open, it's been open 24 hours a day since december 20th. it will finally close at 6:00 p.m. tonight but a lot of shoppers are already there taking add advantage of last-minute deals. if you do plan to head to the city to shop today, christmas eve, expect to be in big crowds. and the clock is also winding down to collect enough toys for thousands of needy families in san francisco. ktvu's alex savidge is live at lefty o'doul's where volunteers want to collect 10,000 toys today. how is it going? >> reporter: good morning. i want to update the forecast a little bit. flurries here outside of lefty o'doul's in san francisco. take a look. the kids are enjoying the snow as it comes down here, a white christmas eve, as they enjoy this. they are inside collecting toys as part of the last chance toy drive here at the lefty o'doul's. they've been doing this for 13

years. the kids obviously love the snow. they are trying to fill up all of the barrels and collect at least 10,000 toys here at lefty o'doul's. they do this every year and all of these toys go to children in need. these are children without the help, might not have ever had a present to open. they've been asking people to come by and they ask people to come by throughout the day to drop off new and unwrapped toys. maybe we can get a shot and show inside there some of the toys. we also have -- santa in the house. he's urging people to drop off their toys. listen to the message from stan ta this morning -- from santa this morning. >> i hope everyone had a safe shopping season. now we have to concentrate on just making the kids happy, make sure they enjoy christmas and share the love and the peace of the christmas season. >> reporter: and you can see here, the hundreds of toys that have been dropped off so far as

fans filled candlestick park to park the end of an era. they watched fireworks over candlestick park at the end of a very emotional farewell game at the 53-year-old stadium. candlestick park has been the seen of some of the -- has been the scene of some of the most exciting moments in sports history. last night's game did not disappoint, ending with a thrilling spot in the playoffs. >> to the hands of bowman! welcome back. 7:15. in central ohio investigators are searching for the cause of this train derailment. 11 train cars jumped the tracks late last night, south of columbus, ohio. no one was hurt. the train was not carrying hazardous materials. crews are working to get the train cars back on the tracks. also new this morning, a disturbing development in the crisis in sudan. a mask raid has been found as american marines get ready to evacuate stranded americans. officials say as many as 54 americans of the people's liberation army may be buried in the massed grave. the announcement comes as marines get ready to go in to to provide security for the

embassy and also to help evacuate the 100 americans still in the country. edward snowden says he considered everything that has happened since he leaked classified government documents a "mission accomplished." snowden spoke to a reporter from "the washington post" giving his first in-depth interview. six months afternoon his first revelations were published. snowden says everything he has been trying to do was validated. he poeld "the post" all he wanted was for the public to have a say in how they were governed. some people will see their long-term enemployment benefits expire at the end of the week. congress is considering whether to extend the benefits. the senate returns january 6th and is scheduled to take a vote on whether to provide another three months of benefits. most democrats support the benefits. republicans say it's no longer need the since the economy is improving. if it pass, it would be

retroactive. the national park service has growing concerns about the safety of visitors and participants in races. a lot of it is because there are more cars and bike traffic during events. they are conducting a safety review to set new guidelines for events. that should be completed by the end of march. four mountain bikers are safe this morning after spending the night lost in the mountains near los angeles. the men were found uninjured around 8:30 yesterday morning in the angeles national forest. several search-and-rescue crews were dispatched to find them when they did not return on sunday. the men who all cousins did not have cell phones with them and were not dressed for the night outdoors. >> we made a decision before nightfall to light a fire and stay warm. it was a campground. in the middle of nowhere. >> the temperature dropped to the mid to high 40s overnight. they say that is uncomfortable but people are able to survive

sunrise? right about 7:23, the official sunrise for san francisco. and giving you a live look there. high clouds outside our door this morning. a mix of that hazy sun bringing us that beautiful sunrise. so kind of ironic how it brings us poor air quality but it brings us beautiful sunshine. give you a look at where we may find a little bit of traffic trouble? are you heading out? there's still snow to report. i wanted to got other direction. i wanted to show you what was going on to the east. we've got this system that was bringing a lot of trouble to the eastern seaboard yesterday. finely pushing off. but still a little bit of snow rye maining over the upper midwest. parts of new york state and pennsylvania and into west virginia. a little bit farther our way. areas like montana as well as wyoming and colorado reporting a little bit of snow for today. here at home, there are those high clouds we showed you. that picture just a moment ago. the high clouds stemming from a

system that's actually off and not going to bring us any rain but the circulation around the ridge of high pressure in our area bringing us the few high clouds and that's really about it. for today, we will have the patchy fog over parts of the north bay seeing it at times. it clears. it's not so bad. visibility anywhere from 3 to 5 miles reported in napa as well as santa rosa. a little bit of patchy fog along the peninsula. hazy sunshine will be the call for today. temperatures for today, quite nice. we're looking at temperatures in and above average by 5:00. perhaps even 10 degrees. take a look at your day planner over oakland, livermore and fremont, starting in the upper 30s to low 40s. mid-40s in oakland right now. by the lunch hour, upper 50s to low 60s and then for the second half of the day, mid-60s with a few upper sicks in the forecast for -- 60s in the forecast. 66 in fremont. 67 san jose. 63 for san francisco and if you are just joining us another spare-the-air day for the entire bay area. it is illegal to burn wood in

flames. another reason for fires because your tree may be dry, they say it's very important to water your christmas tree. the sims recycling plant is working with redwood city on safety measures after two fires there. the company plans to increase staffing overnight and will allow random inspections. the most recent fire broke out last tuesday and caused very unhealthy air during the south bay on a spare-the-air day. the plant received a public nuisance citation for a fire last month that distributed a lot of toxic smoke throughout the bay area. time is now 7:25. a gun industry trade group is suing the city of pleasant hill because of a new gun control ordinance. the pleasant hill city council approved the ordinance back in november. it requires gun dealers to have a police permit and it bans gun stores from being within 150 feet of homes. but the national shooting sports foundation says the ordinance was improperly

approved and it violates existing laws. it's also filed a lawsuit against sunnyvale's new gun control ordinance. christmas came early for some kids in san jose during the christmas in the park celebration. some of the kids had a brand- new bike. it was part of a bike giveaway sponsored by san jose's environmental services department and the green team recycling program. in order to get one of those new bikes, parents signed a green holiday pledge offering tips on how to reduce energy use and consumption during the holidays. and the kids obviously couldn't be happier. >> and a helmet. pink. >> yeah, what she said. in all, 36 bikes were passed out to the kids at this year's event. our time now, 7:26 a very happy ending to a ticket hoax involving a heartbroken 49er fan.

day but smooth sailing into san francisco. finally, 280 near san jose, traffic is looking good in both directions. back to the desk. all right, tara. the very emotional pass couple of weeks for the family of 13- year-old jahi mcmath continues this morning as an independent doctor who performed brain tests on the teen is due to give his report today. brian flores is joining us live in front of the hospital to tell us what we can expect today. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning. ever since doctors here declared 13-year-old jahi mcmath brain dead after complications with tonsil surgery, the family remains adamant that eventually jahi will wake up, even though doctors say otherwise. now, the fight to keep her alive on a ventilator continues as another hearing on the doctors' findings is scheduled for this morning this hearing is not open to the public. we may not know the results for some time. we're hoping the family who has been speaking with the media will shed some light after the

hearing. yesterday, a judge appointed dr. paul fisher to perform a series of brain tests on jahi. these tests were performed yesterday afternoon around 3:00. now, jahi came to children's hospital for a routine tonsillectomy. there were complications and that led to her becoming brain lead. she's been on a ventilator ever since. this was not the doctor the family wanted to perform a train test. they wanted paul burn from ohio. they were hoping to include him in this process. it's unclear whether he's here. but no matter what happens, the family believes that jahi is alive. >> any day, any minute, any second that she's on that ventilator is a victory for me. >> it gives the family time to find alternative arrangements and it gives time for jahi to come back to life. >> reporter: hun dreped of people showed up at oakland's children for a march in support of what the family is doing.

many of those people wore purple. jahi's favorite color. meantime, david durant head of pediatrics issued a few comments yesterday say saying they look forward to hearing of dr. fisher's results and their hearts go out to the family. there was a restraining order issued to prevent the hospital from taking jahi mcmath off life support. the goal was to have her here for christmas. it looks like that will happen as the restraining order was extended until december 30th. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. in texas, another life support controversy is brewing but this one has a husband urging doctors to take his wife off life support. coming up in ten minutes. the state law that's preventing him from honor his life's last wishes. the police want you to be on the look outafter a hit-and-run crash injured an 11-year-old boy. thely was in a crosswalk when he was hit by two cars last

night about 5:30. one of the drivers stayed there at the scene but the driver of an older white van took off leaving that child lying in the crosswalk. >> i just seen something fly in front of my truck. i looked over and i seen the little boy laying in the street on the opposite lane. i was like please, god be okay. >> the light was red when the boy crossed the street. the child is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. police released video of a car driving into a crowded walmart store. this was back on easter sunday. it happened on the story road at the walmart. police say after the driver crashed into the store, he started to attack customers. he was charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault and vandalism. police are hoping this new video will lead more witnesses to come forward. >> happening right now --

stores across the bay area are open to accommodate people looking to grab those last- minute gifts. many stores are extended their hours or are open around the clock. this is video from the union city walmart this morning. we talked to some last-minute shoppers who say they like the extended hours since it allows them to wark around their own hectic schedules. >> last-minute shopping, gotta get it done. didn't have time all week. been working a lot of overtime. >> many people we spoke with say they felt more rushed this year since thanksgiving fell on a later date. that gave people about six fewer shopping days than a traditional year. kohl's will be open around the clock for last-minute shoppers. on friday, the department store started its 100-hour shopping marathon session. all bay area stores will close at 6:00 tonight. yesterday, it was crowded at some shopping centers across the bay area. traffic was backed up for miles in some places. if you are planning to head to a shopping center, good luck and be careful. after a strong start to the holiday shopping season, sales

have fallen for the third week in a row. it comes as americans continue to hold back on spending during what is tradition lil the busy -- traditionally the busiest buying time of the year. the sales dropped $42 billion but those numbers doesn't include online sales. the number of consumer lawsuits filed because the target data breach keeps growing. there's a dozen lawsuits. and te they are hoping -- and they are growing. this is after 40 million cards were stolen. customers would still experience fallout for years to come. >> with a credit card, you could be using things all over the country. i've helped out a lot of people that have had their identity stolen. it's a mess. it takes time. it takes money. >> the justice department is investigating that security breach at target and the secret service is working with target on it own investigation. cash darn on its own -- on its

own investigation. target's red logo could take on a new image. experts say the image may be hurt for several months. positive perception by shoppers fell to a six-year low. target used to have one of the highest scores in the retail industry. now it's the only retailer in negative territory. the deadline for people to sign up for health insurance under the new affordable care act has been extended to midnight. for many people across the country. but not here in california. under the new law, california opted to run its own health insurance exchange called covered california separate from the national exchange. officials with covered california say workers at the call centers, including one in concord, say they are abiding by the original deadline of midnight last night. although the deadline has passed. you can still sign up for coverage. it just won't begin on january 1st. the time now is 7:39. we do want to let you know that administrators of the national healthcare.gov witness extended

now, reports of the street robbery started coming in at 4:00 p.m. yesterday and they continued until 0 10:30 at night -- 10:30 at night. police say seven or eight occurred from almaden to blossom hill downtown and at least one happened on the east side. the suspect and car description matched. in some incident, the victims reported that the suspects were armed. police say the suspects were stealing personal items such as wallets and purses and money shortly after the first robbery. again, officers tracked down and were able to catch up with four suspects in a black car. >> it's a little alarming because, i mean, you want to have that freedom to be able to walk down the street and not have to worry, you know, if you are gonna get jumped or anything like that. so yeah, you know, definitely makes people alarmed of what's going to go around your sound rg -- of what's going to go on

around surroundings,. >> reporter: the suspects are being interviewed at the police department. they are investigating whether the group is responsible for all of the robberies. they say all of the victims appear to have been targeted at random. police are advising people to be aware of their surroundings, especially when walking out of stores. some of these street robberies occurred in commercial areas but they say some happened in residential areas like this one. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police still searching for the smash-and- grab robber who pulled off a bold heist inside the east ridge mall at 6:00 last night. the mall was packed. witnesses say the man wore a mask and smashed a glass case at valiani jewelries and that it sounded like a gunshot. >> the crowd was panicking. they were like wow. i was really scared for my family for my kids. >> several stores there, including the jewelry store closed their doors during the

chaos but they soon reopened. no one was hurt but the robber escaped on foot and is still on the loose. >> reporter: hamming right now -- happening right now -- bay area airports are expecting fewer holiday travelers than yesterday. this is sfo. we did check with the three major airports in the area. sfo is expecting a busy morning but they say things are expected to slow down throughout the day. san jose is also expecting the slower day than yesterday. oakland airport has had no delays or problems. we want to show you another live picture. a look at that, a picture of union square with the beautiful christmas tree and the macy's store over there to the left of the picture. you can see the macy's store is open. there are some buses and trucks that are starting to go that way, but that store at union square in san francisco has been opened 24 hours a day since december 20th. it will finally close at 6:00 p.m. tonight for christmas. plenty of shoppers are taking advantage of last-minute deals.

learn today the cause of the wildfire in big sur that began last week and destroyed 34 homes. a spokesman for the u.s. forest service told the newspaper that they likely will release what they believe is the cause of the fire sometime today. the fire was fully contained on friday but many people still haven't been able to return to their homes because of hot spots. about 180 firefighters remain on the scene. the sims recycling plant is working with redwood city on safety measures following two fires there in just five weeks. the company says that plans to increase staffing overnight and will allow random untiltions. the -- random inspections. the plant received a public nuisance citation for a fire last month that spread toxic smoke throughout the bay area. 8:16 a county clerk in utah says he will not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples even though sakes marriage is now legal in utah.

side. 280 at the 880 split. northbound traffic towards slar on the bottom portion of your screen. let's check back in with the desk. the story of jahi mcmath is getting national attention. her family continues to fight to keep her alive even though doctors have declared her brain dead. ktvu's brian flores is live outside of oakland's children's hospital to tell us about a small victory the family had yesterday and the very important court hearing that take place later this morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. you know, i've spoken with the family quite a few times now. you can see it in their eyes. they truly believe that jahi will eventually take up even though doctors think otherwise. but when it comes to the doctors here at oakland children's, it's all about trust, something the family says they don't have after a ton sill surgery -- tonsil surgery went wrong. another hearing is scheduled for 9:30. it's not open for the public. and because of privacy issues

we may not know the results for sometime, if at ula. the results will be from a third-party independent doctor on brain scans he did yesterday. dr. fisher was appointed to perform the tests. he's the head of pediatric neurology at lucille packard children hospital. as for jahi, she's alive but on a ven later. this -- ventilator. this after a ton sill surgery -- tonsil surgery. we spoke with jahi's mother and she appreciates it. >> i'm very happy people came out here to watch for my daughter. i'm gonna go and let you know you have hundred of people out here who live you. i'm sorry. i thank everybody for coming. this is so hard.

>> the chief of pediatrics, david durant here at oakland children's on behalf of the children offered deep condolences for the family. he says they continue to i've as well -- to grieve as well. he says a ventilator cannot reduce the brain dead that has occurred and it would be wrong to give false hope she could come back to life. hundred of people showed up. as we take it out here live, another small victory for the family, they received yesterday, that the court extended a restraining order to remove her from life support. the family's hope was to keep her alive through christmas. it looks like they will get that wish. we're live here in oakland, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. in texas, another life support controversy. but this one has a husband telling doctors to take his wife off life support. coming up for you in about ten minutes, the state law in texas is preventing him from honoring his wife's last wishes.

and san jose police released a terrifying new video of a car smashing into a crowded walmart store back on easter sunday. this happened on story road. witnesses say the driver started to attack customers after smashing into that walmart. he was charged with two counts of attempted murder assault and vandalism. police hope this new video will lead new witnesses to come forward. well, the police want you to be on the lookout for -- after a hit-and-run crash that happened yesterday in sacramento and injured and 11-year-old which boy. police say the.was in a crosswalk when he was hit by two cars around 5:30 last night. one of the drivers stayed there at the scene. but the driver of an older white van took off and left that little boy lying in the crosswalk. that boy has non-life- threatening injuries. happening right now, stores across the bay area are open to

accommodate people looking to pick up those last-minute gifts. this is video from the union city walmart this morning. we talked to some last-minute shoppers who say they like the extended hours since it allows them to work around their own hectic schedules. >> last-minute shopping. gotta get it done, you know, didn't have time all week. been working a lot of overtime. >> many people we spoke with say they felt more rushed this year since thanksgiving fell on a later date. that gave people about six fewer shopping days than a traditional year. >> kohl's is keeping its doors open for last-minute shoppers this is video from the store in hayward. the department store started its 100-hour shopping marathon session on friday. all bay area stores will close at 6:00 tonight. your time is 8:37. well, the consumer lawsuits keep growing because of that data breach at target. now there are more than a dozen lawsuits and more are expected. that's after the personal information of 40 million

target customers who use credit or debit cards was stolen. lawyers say affected customers could still have fallout from this for years to come target's image may have been hurt for several months. positive perception fell to a six-year low. target had one of the highest scores in the retail industry. now it's the only retailer that has a negative rating. but an informal survey of facebook and twitter comments shows customers are starting to lose some of tll anger -- some of their anger now that target has hired more people to answer questions about the data breach. the deadline for people to sign up for health insurance under the new affordable care act has been extended to midnight tonight for many people across the country. but not here in california. under the new law, california opted to run its own health insurance exchange called covered california. officials say their workers at their call centers, including one in concord, are abiding by the original deadline of

midnight last night. although the deadline here in california has passed, you can still sign up for coverage, it just won't begin on january 1st. administrators of the national healthcare.gov website extended the dead line 24 hours to allow for technical problems that might result from a last- minute rush. the deadline affects those wanting coverage january 1st. at least 11 people have died as a result of the winter storm that rommed from the midwest to the northeast the last couple of days. since saturday afternoon, more than 35 states have been hit by the rain, the ice, the snow and the flooding. utility crews are trying to get the power back on for hundreds of thousands of people in michigan and upstate new york and other places. at the peak of sunday's power outage, more than 500,000 people had no electricity. forecasters say the freezing rain and the ice storms should subside but the cold temperatures, they will stick around for the rest of the

a texas law is keeping her on life support despite wishes to remove her from the ventilator. they are both paramedics and decided they would not want to be on life support. last month, they found her unconscious at the home. she's brain dead, doctors say. her husband wants her taken off life support. the hospital is refusing because she's 18 weeks pregnant. texas law specifically protects the life of an unborn fetus. >> we have a responsibility of making sure that we follow the laws, whether they are state or federal when it comes to providing care to patients. that's what we're doing in this case. >> he says he's getting a lot of criticism for fighting to remove his wife from life support. he says he's trying to honor her last wishes. an oakland musician is hoping to get back a cello in time to perform on christmas.

we do have good news for braurt riders who want to catch a flight to oakland airport. the long-awaited b.a.r.t. tram is finally expected to open next fall. riders will leave the b.a.r.t. pratt form at the -- platform for a quick eight-minute ride to the airport. bart's airport uses automated driverless, three-car trains. and bart will be running both today and tomorrow and tara moriarty is joining us with a look at what the schedules will be and how that might help with the holiday travel. trains will be operating on a sunday schedule. same deal for new year's day. and hopefully, you will get to where you need to go. see the fireworks show in san francisco, et cetera. contra costa county, this this highway 4 -- this is highway 4. we have a stalled vehicle at bailey. it's been moved over.
