good afternoon. i'm jana katsuyama in for tori campbell. the family of 13-year-old jahi mcmath is in a legal battle with children's hospital to keep the girl on life support. ktvu's ali rasmus is live at the courthouse in oakland right now with the results of today's critical court hearing. >> reporter: about 20 minutes ago, we heard from the doctor from stanford whopt had was appointed by the judge -- who was appointed by the judge to do an independent exam of jahi mcmath's brain activity and he share with the court -- shared with the court his opinion. >> the condition of jahi, she needs all -- she meets all of the criteria for brain death. >> reporter: the family was hoping she would have a different diagnosis to keep her on life support at children's

hospital. their time may be running out. the hospital filed paperwork to have everybody her removed from life support. in the documents filed this morning, attorneys argued that this legal battle should end. they said judicial intervention is appropriate only of a proof is offered that it's reasonably prosecutor that the mistake was been made in the diagnosis of brain death. the doctors argue three doctors -- the attorneys argue that three doctors testified and that the teen should no longer be kept on life support. i will have more on this story at 5:00. live in oakland, ail little rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> certainly a difficult situation. thank you for that report. the chp hopes that witnesses will come forward to help them catch a hit-and-run driver who killed a man in san

jose early their morning. the 48-year-old victim was walking across bascom avenue near scott street just after midnight when a vehicle hit him. the man died about three hours later at valley medical center. the chp investigators are asking that anyone who might have seen the collision give them a call. some terrifying moments for a young girl in san jose after a gun is pulled on her. police were able to catch the group responsible for going on a string of crimes that lasted several hours. here's more. >> reporter: ktvu was the only camera there when these people were handcuffed last night. police say one of their victims was an 11-year-old girl riding a skateboard who had a gun pointed at her. we can't show you their cases because two of them are juveniles themselves. >> for the most part, they were stopping individuals and robbing the individuals of personal items and/or money if they had some. >> reporter: the series of armed robberies began at 4:00 yesterday afternoon in various parts of the city. police say at least eight

people were roshed on the street -- robbed on the street. it appears they were children randomly. >> a little alarming. you want to have that freedom to be able to walk down the street and not have to worry, you know, if you are gonna get jumped or anything like that. >> reporter: early on, police say they believe the robberies were connected because the suspect description car matched. the black car was stopped near blossom hill and snell. >> officers were flagged down and the vehicle was still in the area. they were able to quickly locate it. >> reporter: police arrested two males and two females. after searching the car they were traveling in and conducting interviews, they determined the group was responsible for all eight robberies. none of the victims were injured. officers are recommending that people be aware of their surroundings especially when walking out of stores. typically during the holidays, police say they notice an increase in this type of theft. reporting from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. glide memorial church in

san francisco has opened its doors for a free prime rib luncheon. alex savidge is live at the annual event with the festivities and why volunteers will be busy long after those lunch guests leave. >> reporter: well, good afternoon, many people say this is their favorite day of the year. i want to show you the line of people waiting for that famous prime rib, you can see it stretches down the block. it actually goes around the corner. people being very patient trying to get inside and we just came out of the dining hall here at glide and the place is absolutely parked. ♪ >> reporter: they even have live music to serenade the crowd here today. volunteers are serving up delicious prime rib an entire meal with all sorts of side to 3,000 people in need in san francisco. these are folks who who may not have a -- who may not have a hot meal during the holidays. glide has been giving back to the community for 50 years.

anthony's foundation are still collecting curbside donations. organizers there say the goal is to collect 500 hams and 2500 pairs of socks before christmas. anyone who wants to help can drive unto the dining room on -- up to the tining room on golden gate avenue in san francisco. lefty o'doul's is holding its 13th annual toy drive today. ♪ i'm dreaming of a white christmas ♪ >> and right around the piano you can see mayor ed lee and the fire and police chiefs who joined carolers from the third baptist church this morning. so far lefties has collected 3,000 toys. they hope to match last year's 10,000 toy donations to children in need. some -- some donors came back year after year. >> for me i always had the best christmases to my grandparent, and my mom and i wanted to give

back. >> lefties will collect toys until 2:00 tomorrow morning. you can drop them off inside or at barrels out by the curb just up the clock from union square. >> oakland patrol officers played santa this morning for needy kids and families throughout the city. officers were handing out gifts to children and food for a christmas meal. there they are in the santa outfits. this is the 30th year of the giveaway which is sponsorrer ised by the oakland -- sponsored by the oakland police officers association. 75 families got meals including one mother and her family who lost a son in october of last year. >> we've been having a hard time since my son was killed. we've been going through changes and everything. to find somebody who really cares and wants to help us, i thank you. >> he was one of five people killed in four shoots over an 18-hour period. the president of the police officers association says the

the numbers don't include the popular online sales. an oakland musician is hoping for the safe refresh of his cello in time -- return of his cello in time to perform for christmas. this is pawel walerowski who says two cellos, a bicycle and a smartphone were stolen from his studio apartment in east oakland last tuesday. he said one of the cellos was custom made in poland and is worth about $12,000. he says he needs the instruments back to teach and perform today and tomorrow. >> it's a very emotional loss. >> pawel walerowski says he struggled for years to be able to afford the cello. he's been teaching with a borrowed instrument but says it's not the same.

candlestick park went out in style last night with an evening of memorable tributes for those who have graced the field throughout the decades. >> candlestick park's fever forever. 9ers fans packed the stadium to watch their team beat the falcons in a thrilling 34-24 victory for the final regular season game at the stick. it didn't look good for the home team until navarro bowman returned an interception, 89 yards for a touchdown with just a minute remaining in the game. >> what do you think with the crowd roaring? >> i'm gonna do more

expected to vote on the long- awaited union contract at a special meeting next week. the tentative agreement was announced early saturday. if approved it would end the long labor dispute. the deal drops the controversial paid family leave clause in exchange for an extended bereavement leave. air travelers flying in and out of oakland international airport will be able to use b.a.r.t.'s new airport tram by next fall. the automated people mover is expected to open in time for the 2014 holidays. travelers will be able to take the tram from the oakland coliseum station to the airport in just eight minutes. officials add that the 484 million project is on budget. a christmas eve spacewalk wrapped up a short while ago at the international space station. two flight engineers worked for six hours to replace a broken cooling pump today. the pump circulates ammonia through loops outside of the station to keep the equipment cool. astronauts were supposed to do

the work yesterday but they postponed the job due to a spacesuit problem. this is the second ceem spacewalk in -- christmas eve spacewalk in history. this is breaking news. you can see the damage there. the fire department tweeted out these pictures. some people were at home at the time of the crash. but no one was inside the house no one inside the house was injured. there's no word yet on the condition of the driver. the crash sparked a smyre but -- fire but firefighters were able to put it out quickly. they are checking on the structural stability of the home. many people back east will have a very very cold christmas. the roads are still icy and more than -- 370,000 homes are without electricity.
