we're live in san lorenzo where deputies are investigating a murder-suicide at a family home. we'll tell you what they believe the motive could be. a frightening wakeup call. the damage left behind for several families after flames raced through an apartment building in san francisco. it's a white christmas for many parts of the country today. that's not such a good think. the major problems it's causing. >> reporter: volunteers are hugingly prepping for a meal today.

over parts of the north bay. this is for people who have yasma, respiratory issues -- yas ma -- asthma respiratory issues. young, elderly, everybody you may want to limit your exertion. if you are gonna exercise, ride a bike, be aware of that. the winds are generally calm. i'm see a light breeze in hayward. sfo, a calm wind in half moon bay right about 5 miles an hour. but over in an around half moon bay, the winds have shifted from time to time. now coming in from the northwest earlier, it was the northeast, and those winds helping to, well, keep the numbers up at half moon bay. 55 degrees right now half moon bay. one of the warmest spots on this map. san francisco has jumped 51 outside your door. mid-40s in oakland. mid-30s in walnut creek. let's get to the inner areas

where temperatures have sunk once again back into the 30s. 33 right now, sebastopol, 35 healdsburg. 42 petaluma. upper 30s, lower 40s for callie zoe ga -- calistoga. 48 in orinda. the sun will be up in less than an half-hour. we'll be seeing a turnaround. take a look at this. 70 degrees for oakland today. 66 san francisco. 68 in mountain view. 70 degrees san jose. we either tied or broke a couple of records yesterday. could do it again today. i will have a comparison for you coming up. we are still following developing news for you in san lorenzo where police are investigating what looks to be a murder-suicide. tara moriarty is live for us on the scene to tell us what family members and investigators are saying. tara? >> reporter: well, we just spoke to someone from the alameda county sheriff's department and obviously this is a horrible tragedy.

you can imagine the family's heart broke, this happening on -- heartbreak. this is happening on christmas. a man killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself. and the 17-year-old son witnessed the entire shooting. this happened around 2:00 in the morning on via amigos the sister says 36-year-old the woman was shot by her husband and then he turned the gun on himself. the couple's four children were home at the time. the victim's sister said she learned this morning that her sister was having marital problems. >> last night, sheriff's office received a call here of shots fired. when they got there, they found a woman who was -- had multiple gunshot wounds and a male who had a single gunshot wound. at this point, we believe it's a murder-suicide. >> reporter: veronica rodriquez said her sister was a hard

worker. she cleaned offices and worked at a fast-food restaurant to make ends meets. the children range in age from 112 to 20 -- 11 to 20. homicide detectives are here. a portion of the street is shut down. detectives say it's not so much who did this, they have figured that out. it's more the question of why. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. ten san francisco residents are out of their homes after an overnight house fire that broke out just after midnight. you are taking a look at video of the 1100 block of potrero avenue which is in the mission district. this video comes from josh jacobson. you can hee how -- see how intense the flames were. firefighters were able to contain the blaze after froerblt minutes. no one was -- 40 minutes. no one was hurt. investigators are trying to figure out what caused the fire. a judge has agreed with oakland children's hospital in a dispute whether or not to keep jahi mcmath on life support. she suffered serious complications after her tonsils

were removed on december 9th and was declared brain dead three days later. yesterday, a judge ruled that unless an appeals court intervenes, the hospital does not have to keep jahi on life support. beyond next monday, december 30th. we still have her until the 30th. that gives us another week for the chance at a miracle still. there's still hope there for us. >> jahi's family still has not decided if they are gog to appeal -- going to appeal the ruling. they are considering moving her to a long-care facility. many around the country are freezing waking up to a white and very cold christmas morning. a lot of the midwest and the northeast has snow on the ground. this week's storm has left more than 500,000 people without electricity in michigan, new york and new england. temperatures fell below zero. still, there are a lot of people who say it's worth it just to have snow on the christmas -- on christmas. >> i think it's absolutely

wonderful. we got a white christmas. what more can we ask for? tad bit on the bitter side. it's worth it. >> now, the wintry conditions have made traveling dangerous. dozens of cars were involved in this pileup near cleveland, ohio. luckily, believe it or not, no one was seriously hurt. a big ice storm in canada has left almost 200,000 people in ontario without power. the capital city of toronto was one of the hardest hit. this storm may be helping to rebuild the image of toronto's controversial mayor, rob ford. he's actively involved in making sure the lights get turned back on. that's a change for him. he's been in a lot of controversy lately for some bizarre behavior like this. he even admitted he has smoked crack cocaine. back here at home, if you are heading for the california coast this christmas day, there's a high surf warning for you. the national weather service says be aware of big waves and

some sneaker waves along the coast between monterey and sonoma county. those waves can hit the beach without any warning and cover up land that had been dry just moments before. out-of-town visitors may not know about those dangers. this warning will continue through friday afternoon. a big disappointment for people who hoped to have a roaring fire today. today is another spare the air air day. the air district says it doesn't want to spoil anyone's -- anyone's holiday but -- >> you can imagine a cigarette being lit in the room, that impacts everyone in the room. wood fires are similar. >> very frustrating. you know, you are out there shivering in the cold and you want to come in and start your fire and sit down and watch tv or whatever and then you see on

volunteers are preparing to serve breakfast as well as lunch today. amy good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: merry christmas to you. >> merry christmas. >> reporter: talk to us about -- first off, you have a very interesting story. you are not a san francisco resident. you flew from where? >> my son and i came in from virginia. this is home for me. i grew up here. we wanted to sure. we're able to come out here and enjoy our family and we wanted to share the meal and the good feelings we're able to enjoy on our own. >> reporter: is this the first time that you've volunteered here? >> this is the first time we've been able to make it to glide. we're very happy to be here. >> reporter: talk to us about the preparations going on here today. what are you doing? >> we're cutting up turkeys and my son is down at the other end cutting up ham and making -- so far i'm on my third turkey only. >> reporter: you are making progress. >> yes. this gentleman is doing a great job. >> reporter: now that you came

out from virginia, ur-- you plan to come back? >> i would really like to. we wanted to sign up before and didn't think about it in time. we hope to do it again. this is a great way to start the morning and set the tone for the day. great christmas day. >> reporter: absolutely. merry christmas to. >> you merry christmas. >> reporter: 500 volunteers. 5,000 meals gonna be served today. breakfast is being served right now. there's eggs, grits, ham, oranges, coffee. at 9:30 to 1:30, turkey, ham, stuffing vegetables and dessert which is gonna be very fantastic from what we're looking at. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. hundreds of volunteers will help the salvation army in san francisco deliver warm meals and holiday cheer. 3600 meals are gonna be cooked, packaged and then delivered to needy families and senior citizens who live alone. at 10:00 this morning, st.

anthony foundation in san francisco will serve thousands of holiday meals for the needy. yesterday, volunteers were collecting food and socks and other goods at a curbside dropoff. football players playing in the 2013 fight hunger bowl, they will be helping to serve about 4,000 meals. there's controversy over a gift-giving program at san quentin, the accusations being made against a prison. rise and sunshine, here comes the sun. we're on our way to another unseasonably warm day around the bay area. at this hour, it's a chill exbli start -- it's a chilly start.

welcome back. 7:14. only on 2, employees and customers of an oakland convenience store say the justice system has repeatedly failed to protect them from a man they say has a long history of violence and harassment. 42-year-old galen pittman is accused of aggressive panhandling at the sana market on telegraph avenue for years. the owners say since 2011 when they got a restraining order against him, he's been arrested for violating the order 21 times. most recently on monday. >> don't know what to do anymore. we wish we could do something about it. it seems like they don't want to help or do anything about it. >> the storeowners say they have surveillance video of him harassing customers. prosecutors say they routinely file charges on restraining order violations but it doesn't seem to be enough. he's reportedly causing trouble across the street at a church. pittman right now is in jail on $20,000 bail for violating the

restraining order and probation. there's a new report out this morning that the target cyber attackers managed to get information, more information than they first thought. one bank executive says the hackers managed to steal encrypted personal identification numbers from credit and debit cards. now there are concerns that thieves may be able to break the encrip shin cord -- codes. we're actuallying hearing that some cvs, walgreens and starbucks are open today. but other retailers can take a break before the rush starts tomorrow. christmas eve brought plenty of shoppers into stores as late as 10:00. some people were picking up one or two more gifts but others admitted they still had a lot of shopping to do. >> i've been working like all weekend. so this is the first chance i've gotten to finally get all of the stuff for my

grandparents and my boyfriend's parents and everybody pretty much in my family. >> and some shoppers told us they like buying gifts at the last minute. they did find bargains that they wouldn't have if they finished earlier. ums stated demand was much greater than forecast. so some shipments had to be delayed. u.p.s. says drivers made deliveries all day on christmas eastern but packages that didn't make it on time will likely be delivered tomorrow. well, many shoppers report getting some after christmas sales prices late last night. the after christmas sales don't officially kick it tomorrow when -- until tomorrow when christmas is over. macy astores will be --

macy's stores, their doors open at 6:00 a.m. home depot starts business at the hour. old navy,s sears and target open at 7:00. apple and toys 'r' us are going to welcome customers beginning at 8:00 a.m. most normal people have christmas day off today. the dowrts -- the courts, city, county and federal offices are closed. so are banks and post offices. however, there's no standard mail delivery but there is priority express mail today. products carrying a label that says made in america and sold in california. they have to meet a higher standard than sim products sold in -- than similar products sold in any other states. in the other 49 states, lawyers say all or virtually all components are made in the u.s. california is considering reducing that standard to allow

components not available in the u.s. to be included. the state school superintendent says california schools are in much better financial shape then they were three years ago -- than they were three years ago. he said money from proposition 30 is helping to rebuild programs that were cut during the budget crisis. he said the state is focusing on implementing new standardized tests this coming spring. 7:18. and rosemary, dave said normal people get the day off. i guess we're not normal. today. the sky might not look so pretty. we'll have the haze out once again. that ridge of high pressure and the sinking air associated with it. driving our temperatures once again back in the 60s. a few low 70s in the forecast for the afternoon. and we're talking about the possibility of rip currents as well as large breaking waves along the coastal beaches. that to be aware of. you may want to go out and play in the sand for today. 30 degrees at santa rosa right now. san francisco checking in at 49. we're looking at 37 in concord and in our inland areas, right around san ramon. we're talking livermore. trying troo tote go that -- trying to get that to pop up. most of us in the mid- to upper 30s, san jose, 38. this one will look for me. let's take a look at cupertino, 39. 38 in cam bem. 39 for mountain view and 38 outside your door in palo alto. as we get into the second half of the morning, temperatures will begin to warm and by the afternoon, take a look.

70 for berkeley. 67 in concord. 70 for oakland. 66 san francisco. mid- to upper 60s for the north bay, 67 novato. 67 in napa. along the coast, upper 60s in pacifica, low 70s for santa cruz. for our inland areas right along the santa clara valley, we've got 70 for san jose. 70 morgan hill. and 70 for gilroy. let's take a comparison here. some of the standing records and some we may beat, san francisco coming in at 66 this afternoon but it will only take a degree to tie the record. oakland perhaps breaking a record. livermore may break that record there and san jose may tie a record set back in 1901. the extended forecast here about your bay area weekend always in view, showing you dry conditions. we do have an increase in the clouds coming our way. a slight cooldown perhaps thursday into friday. not going to see any rain out of the system but it should improve our air quality a bit as we get into the weekend. dry, mild, temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s.

hand out more toys than usual. one family yesterday received toys, food and a christmas tree. family members of inmates at san quentin say toys donated for visiting children are being taken away from a prison employee. every year, toys are collected as they leave the prison room. this year, family members say a prison sergeant decided each child could only receive two twists per visit. they said that rule was not in place in previous years. family members also say the same sergeant allegedly took toys away from kids. fans of the 49ers and giants are dropping by candlestick park realizing the old stadium could be gone by this time next year. many wanted to take one more

police in san jose have arrest the two people suspected of a treat -- arrested two people suspected of street racing with a car ending up in a house. witnesses say two cars were racing when one was clipped by a third vehicle. one of the automobiles spun out

of control and crashed into that home. how do you manage to get a car over here into a house on the straight street? >> i'm thinking it's probably some young kids out here getting busy. personally, that's what they do. there's no respect for nothing. >> officers say one person inside the car was treated for moderate injuries. no one inside the house was hurt. alameda county firefighters made sure a county burned out of its union city home could celebrate christmas. >> merry christmas! >> firefighters caught up with 16 members of the family who are now living at a relative's house. the firefighters brought toys and holiday cheer. seven people were living in the union city home with nine more visiting from out of town. sometimes kids don't understand what fire does and don't understand what goes on after a fire. it was great to see the kids

smiling. that's why we do the job is to make people happy and take care of everybody. >> a grandmother and 1-year-old were inside the house when the fire started. 7:44. twitter went public less than two months ago but its stock is already a favorite for a lot of investors. twitter's stock finished yesterday's shortened trading day at just under $70. that's up almost 8.5%. it's the sixth time this month the stock has gained more than 5% in a day. twitter's stock is up more than 150% since the i po early last month. there are several reports that japan's soft bank is lining up financing to buy t- mobile. soft bank is the majority owner of sprint. the third biggest wireless carrier in the country. if this $20 billion deal goes through, the can combined companies would leapfrog at&t and become the second biggest

wireless company in the u.s. that could cause objections to the deal. critics say if the deal goes through, consumers will have fewer options and prices could go up. gases prices around -- gas prices around the country are inching up according to aaa. the national average price is $3.26 a gallon. that's up a nickel from this time last year. bay area prices, they are also up about 4 cents. san francisco's average price is $3.69 for regular. that's a dime less everywhere else here in the bay area. well, supporters of same- sex marriage had another legal victory in utah. a federal appeals court rejected the state's request for a stay on issuing same-sex marriage licenses while that case works its way through the courts. a federal judge last week struck down a law passed by utah voters banning gay marriage. since friday, almost 700 same- sex couples have been married. emout spitzer and -- eliot

spitzer and his life are splitting up. they issued a statement saying they rebret their marriage is over -- reflect their marriage is over and would not make any comments. his wife stood by her husband when he was disgrayed by a prostitution -- disgraced by a prostitution scandal. well, mcdonald's is dishing out health advice to employees that in part tells them they may not want to eat what they serve. on the employee website, it tells workers not to eat fast food. the entry describes it as high in fat and sodium. they also say pass on the sickles and eat -- pickles and eat less salt mcdonald's is responding to the report saying the comments on the website was taken out of context and is often taken from third parties and posted. a restaurant in colorado

welcome back. 7:53. we're hearing for the first time now, 911 calls made during a deadly shooting rampage at a medical facility in reno, you can hear the fear when the workers, they -- in their voice, when that gunman entered that building. >> is he trying to get in? >> he's trying. i don't want him to hear me. [inaudible] >> they are on the way. i need you to stay calm. >> reno police confirmed the shooter, 51-year-old allen oliver frazier was a former patient there and had complained about a botched vasectomy in 2010. he killed one person before killing himself. authorities in fremont searching this morning for the owner of a pit bull that they say attacked police officers, firefighters, a grandfather and his son before police shot and killed him. this happened saturday. police say the dog bit a child's foot and injured the

grandfather's hand. when a police officer approached it with a baton, the pit bull grabbed the baton and ran away. that dog later charged at firefighters who were treating the injuries of the grandfather and his grandson. and when the dog charged at police again, a police officer shot and killed it. a family in concord feeling better about the christmas spirit now after someone brought back two holiday gnomes stolen last month from their lawn. we first told you about this during thanksgiving. frank and janet put up a sign, pleading for the return of those gnomes. they were made by their daughter carolyn when she was 8 years old. well, carolyn died two years ago at the age of 54. the family has not celebrated christmas since her death. when they saw the gnomes had been brought back christmas eve, their holiday spirit came back, too. >> i took a double take. i ran into the bedroom yelling

at janet, our gnomes had returned. >> wake up! >> she said no. i said yes. >> they put out a sign thanking whoever brought back the gnomes and said their faith in humanity has been restored. a charity in vallejo received a helping hand. wrapper e-40 grew up in vallejo and troped by yesterday to spread some holiday cheer and i gave out -- and gave out bicycles and presented the charity with a check for $10,000. the rapper whose name is earl stevens said he made the donation because of the tough sometimes many in the city are facing. >> when you need food clothes, when times are hard, during hardship, this is the place to go. they always extend a hand. you know, the community comes together and they all pitch in. >> the salvation army said that it was facing a shortfall this

expect in san francisco. 66 for today. 68 in hey regard -- hayward. 70 in san jose. 68 for santa rosa. again we may see a record or two. i will have a comparison chart for you -- coming up. all right. 8:01. we are following developing news in san lorenzo. alameda county sheriff's deputies are investigating a christmas morning tragedy. ktvu's tara moriarty is there at the scene with what appears to be a mudd suicide. tara -- murder-suicide. tara? >> reporter: unbeknownst to people who didn't live in the home, the couple was reportedly experiencing marital problems. this is a horrible tragedy to happen on christmas day. a witness says that the husband shot his wife, killing her and turned the gun on himself. the 17-year-old son witnessed the ent tire thing -- entire thing. we're on the corner of via amigos and via lucas. this happening around 2:00 this morning. the victim's sister said that

her 36-year-old sister was shot by her husband, john. she suffered several gunshot wounds. then john killed himself, dying of a single gunshot wound to the head. all of the couple's four children were home at the time. the victim's sister said her nieces called her this morning with the news. >> they just told me they were having problems in their marriage. >> reporter: nobody expected something like this? >> no. no. we don't expect nothing like this. like any marriage, sometimes we have problems. >> there's no threat to the neighborhood or community. that is unfortunately a very tragic incident that occurred on christmas. and we're working to find out not so much what happened but why it happened. >> reporter: veronica rodriquez says her sister was polite, a hard worker, she cleaned offices and worked at a fast- food restaurant to make ends meet. the children, two boys, two girls range in age from 11 to

20. homicide detectives are here pro session the scene -- processing the scene. we have not seen the coroner yet. so we expect this portion of via amigos to be shut for dwight sometime as the -- for quite sometime as this progresses. ten people in san francisco were chased out of their homes by this overnight house fire. started around midnight in the 1100 block of potrero avenue in the miss drtion -- mission district. you can see how intense those flames are. he also provided us with photos showing some of the residents gathering their belongings after wards. fire crews were able to contain it after about 40 minutes. no one was hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of the fire. an alameda county judge has sided with oakland children's hospital in a dispute whether to keep jahi mcmath on life support. she suffered serious complications after her tonsils

were removed on december 9th and then was declared brain dead three days it laker. yesterday, a judge ruled that unless an appeals court intervenes, the hospital does not have to keep jahi mcmath on life support beyond next monday, december 30th. this is paramount moving forward for other parents to understand that they do have rights, just the right to know that you are entitled to, you know, second and third opinions. >> jahi's family still has not decided if they are gonna appeal the judge's ruling. they are considering moving her -- her to a long-term care facility. more than 500,000 people are still without power this christmas morning. thanks to the winter storm that hit much of the u.s. that storm made traveling dangerous. dozens of cars crashed in this pileup. that's near cleveland, ohio. no one was hurt. an ice storm in canada has left 200,000 people without power. toronto, one of the heardest areas hit.

busy for volunteers here at glide. a few days ago they gave around 8,000 gifts to kids and yesterday they served 3,000 people at a christmas eve dinner. 2200 pounds of prime rib were donated. about 500 volunteers are set to serve meals for the less fortunate, a lot of dicing, prepping and chopping. also getting up early for many as well. >> my son and i came in on friday and we had heard about this before, we signed up. you had to sign up early for christmas. came in here to volunteer because this is a really great organization. i grew up in san francisco. this is home for me. >> reporter: now, glide began preparing for the holiday meals back in zwrul and then started -- july and then started to order the food in october. eggs, grits, ham, oranges, bis kisses and -- biscuits and

coffee will be served for breakfast. and then at lunch, they will serve turkey, ham, stuffing vegetables and dessert. more volunteers are coming. many koch football players -- college football players. players from the washington huskies and byu cougars will be here around lunchtime to serve meals as well. we're live here in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. also this morning, hundreds of volunteers will help the salvation army in san francisco deliver warm meals and christmas dheer. 3600 -- cheer. 3600 meals will be cooked and packaged and delivered to those in need. at 10:00 this morning, the st. anthony foundation in san francisco is also go going to serve thousands of holiday meals to the needy. yesterday, volunteers spent the day collectinged into and other foods at the curbside dropoff. football players are going to help serve about 4,000 meals. >> that's good. there was also a holiday tragedy this morning in the

report of a man who constantly harasses customers at an oakland convenience store, 42-year-old guylen pittman is accused of aggressive panhandle at the sanan market. they say since 2011, when they got a restraining order against him, he's been arrested for vite lag -- for violating that order 21 times. most recently on monday. >> we wish we could do something about it. >> pittman is accused of causing trouble even across the street at a church. he's right now behind bars on

$20,000 bail for violating the restraining order and probation. there's a new report that the target cyber attackers managed to get more information than first thought. one bank executive says the hackers managed to steal encrypted personal identification numbers from debit and credit cards. and now there are concerns that thieves may be able to break the codes and make fraudulent withdrawals from bank accounts. so far no no comment from target. christmas day means nearly all retail workers can finally take a break before that rush starts all over again tomorrow. christmas eve did bring in plenty of shoppers as late as 10:00 last night. some people said they were picking up just one or two gifts. others admitted that they had a lot of shopping to do. >> i've been working all weekend. this is the first chance i've got to get the stuff for my

[laughter] >> of course, the clearance stores in the stores don't take place until tomorrow. the biggest discounts will be on clothing, brand-name electronics, especially televisions and the holiday decorations.

macy's stores are going to be among the first to kick off those clearance sales tomorrow morning. those doors open at 6:00 atm. home depot will open at that hour. if you want to shop at old navy, sears or target, you have to wait until 7:00 and then apple and toys 'r' us stores will open up beginning at 8:00. most people have christmas day off today. courts, city, county and federal government offices are closed. so are the banks and the post offices. while there's no -- while there's no standard delivery, priority express mail will be delivered today. california is considering a plan to reduce the standards for products to carry labels saying made in the usa. right now, products can only use the label if they don't  have any components made or assembled outside of this country. in the other 49 states, there's a lower standard with "virtually all components made in the saw but there's no legal definition for that term."

southern california's school superintendent says california schools are in much better shape financially than they were three years ago. he told the contra costa times that money from proposition 30 is helping to rebuild programs that were cut during the budget crisis. he says california is now focusing on implementing new standardized tests this spring. a 6-year-old girl in the south bay is recovering after getting hit by a car. the child's injuries are serious but they are not life- threatening. the accident happened yesterday afternoon on the 1000 block of thorndale court near highway one. police say the child ran into the street and suffered serious injuries when hit. the driver remained at the scene. alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in the accident. and police in tracy say they've arrested an 18-year-old man for a shooting in a mall last friday. officers say he shot into kay's jewry store before -- jewelry store before 5:00 p.m. no one was hit.

a husband apparently shot and killed his wife and then killed himself. tara moriarty is out there now, you talked to family members who say the couple had been having problems. tara? >> reporter: yes. this is true. but that was unbeknownst to people who weren't actually living inside the home. a lot of people didn't know about it. officials say the husband was angry, possibly because he thought that his wife was cheating on him. so he shot himself and then actually -- he killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself. the disturbing part of this story is the fact that the couple's 17-year-old son witnessed the entire shooting. it happened around 2:00 this morning at the home on via amigos. the victim's sister tells us 36- year-old was shot by her husband john, suffering several gunshot wounds. the husband then killed himself. all of the children were home. the victim seas ier is ter got a -- sister got a call from her nieces and drove up

immediately. >> you have sisters, browers, having problems -- brothers having problems, speak up. say something. my sister always say things are okay. she says she's okay. right now my pieces are telling me they were having problems in their marriage. >> reporter: veronica says her tis wear was polite a hard worker, she cleaned offices and worked at a fast-food restaurant to make ends meet. the children are 11 to 20 years old. homicide detectives are here. we haven't seen any crime scene technicians here. we expect the street will be shut down for some time. tam, ktvu channel 2 news -- tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. we have new information about a stabbing in santa rosa at 10:350 last night outside of the downtown public library near third and e streets. police say a homeless man was

seen nearby. there was blood on his hands and clothing and he reportedly admitted he committed the stabbing. he was arrested. police have not released a motive in this case. we don't yet know the name of the victim. tragedy on the tracks in san jose this christmas morning. a woman was hit and killed by a vta train. that deadly incident interrupted train service for a period of time. janine de la vega, joins us live from san jose with an update. janine? >> reporter: , hi, claudine. the kurtner station is back open. but there's hardly been any foot traffic out here because it's christmas morning. they've been running on a sunday schedule. for about an hour, traffic was definitely at a standstill. the vta says the light rail was heading northbound at 1:30 a.m. when the operator spotted a person in dark clothing walking on the tracks. the woman was hit and killed 200 feet from the station. police arrived on scene to investigate.

they say it appears she was walking on the strain. no one was on the train at the time of the accident except for the operator because it was done for the night and heading back to the yard. >> we do take the operators for drug testing and offer counseling through our employees network if that's necessary if the operator would like to make use of that. the operator was upset. >> reporter: at this point, police say it's a possibility they may never find out if she was trying to purposely take her life or if really was an stent. her identify tie -- an accident. her identity is unknown. the train will be sealed off at the yard. this affected service from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. everything is back to normal now. the vta says their hearts go out to the relatives of the woman. they want to remind people not to trespass and be aware of

their surroundings, especially when they are on the platform. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. the sonoma county sheriff's office and security at the new graton casino hope surveillance video helps them find the person who attacked a 67-year- old casino in the parking lot of the casino. the victim was robbed of an unindes closed amount of -- undisclosed amount of crash. he was taken to the hospital with severe head trauma. the casino did not respond for our request for comment. we did talk to patrons who say they still feel safe there. >> there's people there, guards around all of the time. i don't see how they got away with it. >> the press democrat reports the sheriff's office has had to add one more deputy because of the numbers of calls for service. pope francis delivered his first message christmas day message from the vatican. tree. family members of inmates at san quentin prison say the toys donated for visiting children, they are being taken away by a prison employee. every year since 1998, the vietnam veterans group collects toys to give toys as they leave the visiting room. this year, a prison sergeant decided each child can only get two gifts per visit. they say that rule was not in place in years past. family members also say that same sergeant allegedly took toys away from the kids. a spokesperson for the prison confirms toys were taken away from children who were given too many. if there is an xbox one or playstation 4 under your tree, you might consider yourself one of the lucky ones. the newest game consomes sold out -- consomes sold out -- consols sold out at most

francisco, thousands of people are being served a hot holiday meal at glide memorial church in san francisco. volunteers are also preparing to serserve -- to serve a big lunch for the needy as well. police in san jose have arrested two people suspected of a street race that ended into one car smashing into a home on croply avenue near peadmont road. two cars were racing when one of them was clipped by a third vehicle. one of the automobiles spun out of control and spun into the house. a hepatitis-a warning has been issued. anyone who eight or drink at this restaurant from december 12 or through the 15th or on december 19th may have been exposed. those who are concerned about exposure should contact their doctor. mcdonald's is dishing out some health advice to its employees. that in part tells them what not to eat what they serve.

on the employee website it tells workers not to eat fast food. the entry describes it as high and fat and soed dwrum and says it can lead to obesity. it suggests employees pass on the pickles and eat less salt and recommend employees consider a law, vegetable diet. mcdonald's says the comments were taken out of comment and says the information is often pulled from third parties and posted. the taliban is claimlessing responsibility for an attack in kabul. two rockets landed inside the u.s. embassy compound around dawn. hundreds of american diplomats and aide workers scrambled into fortified burgers as a result. so far, there's no word of any injuries. and a car bomb blew up outside of a church in southern baghdad. workers were leaving a christmas day service. at least 15 people were killed. another car bomb blew up at an

we're hearing for the first time the 911 calls during a deadly shooting rampage in reno at a medical facility. you can actually hear how scared the workers were with -- when the gunman came in. >> is he trying to get in? >> yes, he is. i don't want him to hear me. i need you to stay calm. >> police confirm the shooter, 51-year-old alan oliver frazier was a former patient at the facility and complained about a botched vasectomy in 2010. he killed one person and committed suicide. back here at home, authorities in fremont searching for the owner of a pit bull that they say attacked police officers, firefighters, a grandfather and his grandson before police shot and killed him. now, this happened saturday. police say the dog bit the child on the foot and injured the grandfather's hand. when the police officer approached it with a baton, the pit bull grabbed the baton and ran away. the dog later charged at firefighters who were treating the injured grandfather and his grandson. when the dog charged at police again, a police officer shot and killed it. a family in concord is suing the christmas spirit after someone brought back two holiday gnomes stolen last month from their lawn.
