there, claudine? >> reporter: i want to show you this parking lot because this is unbelievable. there are no parking spaces up in front and it's 7:00 in the morning because everyone has come here to do a little post-christmas shopping today. i got to tell you, you got to keep in mind the mall isn't open. macy's is, but the mall isn't open. these folks are coming here specifically to make sure they get in on some of the deals. you can see inside there is the shoe section, a very, very popular section of the store this morning. doors opened here at this macy's at six this morning and people were actually waiting outside the door when the manager came to open things up. surprised even him. certainly a good surprise because they were hoping that a lot of people would take advantage of some post- christmas sales. we are also in pleasant hill this morning at the kohl's store there. that store opened even earlier at 5:00 this morning. there were a handful of people out it that early.

and we talked to one of the first people through the door. >> i just love to shop and i go to the gym at 5:30 and i thought i would kill two birds with one stone and come here first. >> reporter: and taking a live look back here outside the macy's at sun valley mall, you can see some customers just leaving. yes, they do have bags in their hands. when you talk about this shopping period, obviously you have the big, very, very busy black friday. you have cyber monday. you have christmas eve. you have the last-minute shoppers. this is also, though, a very important time of the shopping season, especially when you consider that 2013 had six fewer days of shopping than they normally get because thanksgiving was later. they are hoping that people come in here, take advantage of a lot of teals that are in and around the stores so that their bottom line looks pretty good as they head into 2014. we have seen a steady dream. we will keep an eye on things

and check in with you. >> thanks, claudine. new video from walmart shoppers in san leandro who got up early to do some shopping. the store opened about an hour ago and there were already people waiting outside when the doors opened. but not everyone is out looking for bargains this morning. >> reporter: are you looking for bargains this morning? what kind of things are you looking for? >> just coming to look. >> reporter: plan on doing some shopping for yourself? >> no. save my christmas money. >> walmart is not the only store that opened early this morning. kohl's department stores opened at 5 a.m. and most macy's stores opened at 6 this morning: senator place that just opened at -- another place that just opened this morning is the paragon outlets in livermore. these are live pictures from just inside the outlets. our photographer says that people are just starting to show up. and right now it's really not too crowded. remember when this whole mall

end there was a parking -- rather a traffic all watt i out on 580. the mall will stay open until 9:00 tonight. fire investigators in san francisco are on the scene of a house fire where two men were critically injured. it started shortly before 9:00 last night on baker street near alamo square. want to go to some live pictures of the home not far from the panhandle. investigators could remain on the scene for the next two days since there were critical injuries in this fire. firefighters say they found two victims near the entrance of the four-story victorian head coach which you see there. the two men in their 60s are being treated for critical burns. one neighbor says she was impressed by the quick response by the more than 100 firefighters who raced to the scene. >> i too, live in a wooden victorian. we are all incredibly vulnerable to what happens in our own ancient houses with crazy electrical systems and what happens to our neighbor's

houses. >> firefighters were able to put it out in about 30 minutes, but the fire caused major damage. investigators are still trying to determine the cause. well, police in anitoch are looking into two separate shootings that happened less than two hours apart on christmas day. the first shooting happened just before 1:45 in the afternoon. a 19-year-old man was walking on the 4300 block of rock island drive when three men drove up, confronted him and his friends it, then demanded some jewelry and then opened fire. the second shooting occurred around 3 p.m. a 26-year-old man was walking on west 19th street when some people he did not know drove up next to him and shot him in the leg. 7:08. happening today a judge will consider the future of city college in san francisco. at 9:00 this morning the superior court judge will hear two separate requests to block a decision to strip the school's accreditation next july. the two lawsuits are filed by a teachers union and the city attorney of san francisco who

is acting on behalf of the people of california. an accrediting commission ruled that it was mismanaged. uc students will soon be able to take online classes offered by other campuses. the new cross-campus enrollment program starts in the winter quarter. only four uc campuses will be participating for now. berkeley, davis, irvine, and riverside. the $10 million program is funded by the state. in oakland councilman noel guyo hopes his hands on campaign it to clean up trash will help make the city a more attractive place. more than 1600 tons of trash, furniture, paint and other debris were dumped on open streets last year and it's an ongoing problem. he leads teams of volunteers to pick up trash every saturday and he says people cannot believe what they find on the greets. gallono says it's thacking of

education that may change the culture. 7:09. an east bay police are looking for real life grinch s investigators say someone broke into a house on cherry street and took all the presents under the christmas tree as well as computer and some jewelry. the family believes someone came in through an unlocked window while they were gone on christmas eve. the crime scene was not discovered until the 9 and 11-year-old kids who live in the house found nothing under their tree on christmas morning. dozens of families in sacramento county woke up christmas morning and found their tires slashed. neighbors say about 50 to 60 cars on three different streets were hit. surveillance video shows a man walking from car to car slashing those tires. investigators say it happened on tuesday between 1 and 2 in the morning. neighbors say it couldn't have happened at a worse time. >> you spend so much money for christmas and do all that stuff and then you have another expense that you weren't expecting. i mean, it can be hard on a lot of people.

thousands of people lined up outside stores in sydney, australia today to take advantage of some bargains there. traditionally, boxing day is when servants would receive gifts known as a christmas box from their bosses. countries observing the holiday include england, canada, australia, and new zealand. it is 7:17. it is a san francisco tradition the day after christmas. there will be a giant wood chipper in front of city hall at 11 this morning to highlight curbside industry collections in san francisco. this is the 27th annual chipping of the trees. tree collections will run from thursday, january 2 to january 15 and be picked up on the normal trash collection day. 7:18. traffic for the most part is light today expect looks like there is a problem in the east bay. >> we have a traffic hazard. we haven't had too many problems on the roadways this morning. in fremont, if we take a look at the map, we have a tire on 880

expected to make another important decision. more on how the family spent christmas and what's next in this very emotional case. >> yeah, the story has captured the attention of people across the country. the 13-year-old went to children's hospital in oakland december 10 for what her family thought would be a routine tons i willectomy. it ended with complications that left her on life support. the family spent christmas day in the icu of children's hospital by jaha i's side. a court-appointed doctor confirmed that the young teenager is brain dead. >> he was very compassionate and very thorough with the examination. he was able to explain it very clearly to us. and, you know, it's heartbreaking to hear. but we still have a few days left for our miracle. >> family members will now consider moving her out of children's hospital in oakland to another facility where she can remain on a breathing machine. now, the decision today could likely affect other similar

cases. in our next hour, the reason many people are paying attention to not just the emotional part but the legal aspects of this case as well. pam cook. ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. this morning police in gilroy are searching for man wanted for a deadly christmas night stabbing. officers have identified that suspect as ernesto rodriguez. police say he may still be carrying a knife and should be considered dangerous. he is accused of killing another young man inside an apartment on kelton drive yesterday night. police say the suspect and 21-year-old victim had some type of conflict that resulted in a restraining order one year ago. anyone with information on this case is asked to call gilroy police right away. it is 7:34. happening right now the post-christmas travel rush is just beginning. i want to he show you live pictures from our crew at san jose mineta international. our photographer says curbside drop-off is getting busier. the terminals are getting crowded and parking lots are

starting to fill up. you see a few people there and some of the guards doing some calisthenic exercises, getting themselves all limber up. according to aaa more than 94 million people will have traveled by the end of the holiday season. that's up slightly from last year with lots of people driving to their destinations. fewer people are flying this year because of airfare increases. some people, including one man headed for chicago this morning, said they just have no choice. >> yes, i am traveling for work. last-minute call. duty calls. you got to go out. >> so far there are no reports of flight delays or cancellations for any bay area airports. time now 7:35. ups and fedex trucks will be making some late christmas deliveries today and tomorrow. the shipping services say the number of packages to be delivered exceeded what they are capable of doing this year. both fedex and ups say online shopping may be pushing that trend. some customers say late

deliveries this year won't stop them from ordering online for next year's holidays. >> i know i'm going to get it eventually. >> not a big deal. >> not the end of the world. >> some shoppers say they don't blame the ups and fedex workers, but they say the online retailers should have stopped promising deliveries by christmas. amazon is apologizing to its customers whose gifts did not arrive on time even though it says it did everything it could to process orders on time. now, amazon says they will make up for late deliveries by ups and fedex. they are offering shipping refunds and a $20 gift card to anyone whose packages arrive late. amazon says its prime incumbants who pay $79 a year for two-day shipping may get additional refunds as well. it is 7:36. the san francisco based on demand delivery service is growing in popularity this holiday season. it's called post mates. it's an app on your smartphone and the selling point is get what you want when you want it.

first told you about a few weeks ago. the homeless youth alliance is now officially shut down. the organization has helped as many as 100 young people a day in the city's haight-ashbury district. they gave away sleeping bags, toothbrushes and toothpaste to people who have nowhere else to turn. a woman we spoke with by the name of pixie says she uses the needle exchange program and hasn't figured out what she'll do now. >> don't s i live in san francisco. >> reporter: trying to figure it out? >> yeah. a lot of my friends don't know how they are going to shower. >> it's not clear why the alliance has to leave the haight location. there are ind cakes that the rising rents are a factor. meantime, albany is moving forward with plans to help the

homeless. the city's planning commission picked a commercial mixed-use zone which is basically on the west side of interstate 580 along the shoreline. a meeting will be held today for those affect bade huge forest fire earlier this month in the big sur area of monterey county. the fire is out but firefighters are still patrolling the area. they are concerned that increased temperatures could cause flareups. the fire burned 34 homes and 900 acres. all of the people who were evacuated are back at home now. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. a brushfire in southern california came dangerously close to a highway. the fire started late yesterday in simi valley near the 118 freeway. while it only burned about ten acres, you can see the intensity of the flames. sparks from the trees. firefighters say they used as many resources as possible to make sure it did not get out of

hand. they say wind conditions this time of year can be unpredictable making even small fires a real threat. our unusually warm temperatures and stagnant air are fueling this string of spare the air alerts. today is the fourth straight day this week, and 19th overall this season. woodburning is banned throughout all of nine counties. it's illegal to use fireplaces and woodstoves unless it's the only source of heat. this latest string of spare the air alerts is due largely to the near record high holiday temperatures in the bay area. this christmas week in the bay area is now officially one of the warmest on record. there have been hot temperatures and clear blue skies everywhere in the bay area, even on the coast. many people spent their christmas day on the sunny peaches of pacifica s. i think it's about 47 in the water right now. usually, it would be in the 40s and be a little bit warmer in the water than it would be actually outside. >> now, as rosemary has been saying, there is no rain in

did not successfully complete it. call centers for covered california opened at eight this morning. the man accused in a deadly shooting last month at los angeles international airport is scheduled to enter a plea in court today. police say 23-year-old paul ciancia shot and killed a tsa officer and wounded three other people at lax on november 1st. he is charged with 11 felonies, including murder and attempted murder. if convicted he could get the death penalty. 7:48. and kwanzaa is beginning today. san francisco city hall will host an annual celebration at noon today. the week-long holiday honors african-american heritage and culture. it was created back in 1966 by a cal state long beach professor. union square will be more festive than normal today as well. a pep rally is set for 11:00 this morning for university of washington and brigham young university. the two competing in tomorrow's

i want to show you stormtracker 2. you can pick out the ridge of high pressure for yourself if you look close enough. take a look at the cloud formation here. the clockwise motion moving around that ridge of high pressure showing us that over the east pacific and over california it is locked in. we do have a weak system on the back side of this. it won't be able to break through and bring us any rain, but it will bring us an increase in clouds for tomorrow and it will not knock our temperatures down just a bit as we get into friday and we'll hopefully help to mix the air enough to improve our air quality but as tara mentioned a moment ago another spare the air day and it looks like at this point we will end december on a dry note marking the driest calendar year on record. we will be watching out between now and then. let's talk about a what's happening right now. into the east bay hazy sunshine will again be the rule for today. temperatures in the upper 30s around livermore. closer to the bay, low 40s.

grateful to see the dozens and dozens of firefighters and other emergency responders. so grateful to see on christmas day, making sure that the fire was put out and making sure that the rest of the neighborhood was safe. a remarkable show of support. >> fire crews knocked down the flames in 30 minutes but it still caused major damage. investigators are still trying to determine the cause. police in anitoch are looking into two separate shootings that happened less than two hours apart on christmas day. the first shooting happened just before 1:45 in the afternoon. a 19-year-old man was walking on the 4300 block of rock island drive when three men drove up, confronted him and his friends, demanded some jewelry and then opened fire. the second shooting occurred around 3 p.m. a 26-year-old man was walking on west 19th street when someone he did not know drove up right next to him and shot him in the leg. time now is 8:08. happening today a judge will consider the future of city college of san francisco. at the top of the next hour the

superior court judge will hear two separate requests to block a decision to strip the school's accreditation nexium. the two lawsuits are filed by a teachers union and the city attorney of san francisco who is acting on behalf of the people of california. an accrediting commission ruled that city college was mismanaged and failed to keep standards. uc students will soon be able to take online classes offered by other campuses. the new cross-campus enrollment program starts in the winter quarter. only four uc campuses though will be participating for now. they include berkeley, davis, irvine, and riverside. the $10 million program is funded by the state. city council noel gallo hopes his hands on campaign to clean up trash will make oakland a prettier city. trash were dumped on oakland streets last year and it's an ongoing problem. he leads teams of volunteers to pick up trash every saturday. he says people can't believe

mcmath. ktvu's pam cook live in our newsroom with the next step for the family of the 13-year-old oakland girl still on life support. >> reporter: good morning. the family is weighing some very important and emotional decisions now that a judge has allowed oakland children's hospital to remove jahi from life support. the mcmath family took a break from the legal turmoil to try their best to enjoy some christmas traditions. they spent the day in the icu. they managed to bring a tree into the lobby complete with presents for jahi and her siblings. they played board games and sang christmas carols to jahi, who has been declared brain dead. the family's attorney says they now have to discuss whether or not to appeal an alameda county superior court's decision that allows the hospital to take jahi on life support. >> this case is very important not only just for this family, but for all families to know that they have rights when it comes down to these decisions. >> reporter: now, the judge ruled that jahi must be kept on the breathing machine physical

the evening of december 30. that verdict came after testimony from two different doctors. now, they examined the 13-year-old and confirmed that she is brain dead, meaning she is only alive because of that ventilator. now, the decision to keep jahi alive and move her to a long-term care facility is expensive one. but the family attorney says they have received offers of help from around the country, but that they have to look into that as well. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. new this morning police in gilroy are searching for a man wanted for a deadly christmas night stabbing. officers have identified that suspect as ernesto rodriguez. police say he may still be carrying a knife and should be considered dangerous. he is accused of killing another young man inside an apartment on kelton drive last night. police say the suspect and 21-year-old victim had some type of conflict that resulted in a restraining order about a year ago. anyone with information on this case is asked to call gilroy

police right away. happening right now the post-christmas travel rush is just beginning. want to go to some live pictures from our crew at san jose international airport. our photographer the talented george bustees says curbside dropoffs are getting bigger. terminals are getting crowded and parking lots are filling up. according to aaa more than 94 million people will have traveled by the end of the holiday season. that's up slightly over last year with lots more people driving to and from their destination. here people are flying this year because of airfare increases. but some people, including one man headed for chicago this morning, say they have no choice. >> yes, i'm traveling for work. last-minute call. duty calls, you got to go out. >> yeah, do what you got to do. so far no reports of flight delays or cancellations at any of the major bay area airports. ups and fedex trucks will be making some late christmas deliveries today and tomorrow. the shipping services say the

number of packages to be delivered by christmas just exceeded their capacity this year. both fedex and ups say online shopping may be pushing that trend. plus, inclement weather in parts of the country earlier this month didn't help. at least some customers, though, say late deliveries this year will not stop them from ordering online for next year's holidays. >> i know i'm going to to get it eventually. >> reporter: it's not a big deal? >> not the end of the world. >> people have more problems. >> some shoppers say they don't blame the ups and fedex be workers, but they say online retailers should have stopped promising deliveries by christmas. and amazon is apologizing to its customers whose gifts did not arrive on time even though it says it did everything it could to process orders as promised. now amazon says it will make up for late deliveries by ups and fedex. it is offering shipping refunds and a $20 gift card to anyone whose packages arrived late.

amazon says its prime customers who pay $79 a year for two-day shipping may get additional refunds. time now 8:35. a san francisco based on demand delivery service is growing in popularity this holiday season. the company is called post mates. it's an app on your smartphone and it's selling point is get what you want when you want it. items range from food to medicine. a click on the post mate's app sends your request into a customer service center. a courier then gets a phone alert indicating what the customer wants and has an hour to fulfill the hour. >> the best part about being a post mate would be that you get to find new places that you might want to eat at. make customers happy when you bring them something that maybe they don't have the ability to get themselves. >> the minimum delivery charge is $5. post mate tells us the maximum is $15. it is 8:36. updating a story we first

brought you a few weeks ago. the homeless youth alliance is now officially shut down in san francisco. the organization has helped as many as 100 young people a day in the city's haight-ashbury district for the last last 12 years. even during its final hours the alliance gave away sleeping bags, toothbrushes and toothpaste to people who have nowhere else to turn now. and one young lady who spoke to us, picks is i, says she uses the needle exchange program and hasn't figured out what she will do now. >> i am new to san francisco. so i'm trying to figure it out. i know a lot of my friends, they dent know how they're even going to shower. >> it's not clear exactly why the alliance had it leave the location but there are indications rising rents in the city have pushed past what the organization can afford to pay. the city of albany is moving forward with plans to helple host. there is a proposal to change

zoning laws to comply with the 2008 state order that selects one zone to build an emergency shelter without a conditional use permit. the planning commission picked a mixed use zone. a meeting will be held today for those affected by huge forest fire in the big sur area of monterey county. the fire is out but firefighters are still patrolling the area. they are concerned that increased temperatures could cause flair-ups. the fire burned 34 homes and 900 cakers of land. all of the people who are evacuated are back at home now. the cause of the fire still under investigation. meantime, a brushfire in southern california came dangerously close to a highway. the fire started late yesterday in simi valley near the 118 freeway. you can see the intensity of the flames there. firefighters used as many resources as possible to make sure it didn't get out of hand. they say wind conditions this time of year can be

unpredictable making even small fires a real threat. it is 8:38. unusually warm temperatures and stagnant air are fueling the string of spare the air alerts we've had lately. today is the fourth straight day this week and the 19th this season. wood burning is banned throughout the nine counties. it is illegal to use fireplaces and woodstoves unless it is the only source of heat. and again these string of spare the air alerts is due largely to near record high holiday temperatures in the bay area. this christmas week in the bay area is now officially one of the warmest on record. there have been hot temperatures and clear blue though sometimes hazy skies everywhere in the bay area, even on the coast. many people spent their christmas day on the sunny beaches of pacifica. a city known for fog. >> it's about 65 outside and i think it's about 47 in the water right now. usually it would be in the 40s and be a little bit warmer in the water than it would actually be outside. >> there is no rain in this

inflames o flames. a los angeles police officer was driving by going to work. he pulled the victim out. >> i reached in there and fumbled a bit more. thank goodness i found that button and popped the belt and grabbed him and pulled him out. >> a los angeles firefighter also happened to be driving by and he, too, stopped help basically making the rescue seamless. the man accused in a deadly shooting last month at los angeles international airport is scheduled to enter a plea in court today. police say 23-year-old paul seans yeah shot and killed a tsa officer and wounded three other people at lax on november 1. he is charged with 11 felonies, including murder and attempted murder. if convicted, he could get the death penalty. five days after a winter storm hit the northeast, midwest and canada thousands of people are still without power. many have been without power actually since saturday.

injuries. traffic on the bay bridge looking good. this is our new eastern span. very smogy out there. i want to mention that there will be construction going on under the bridge. there will be a boat working on a project until 4:00 tonight. so you might see some extra chp patrols, but it shouldn't impact your traffic. in the south bay in san jose 101 no delays. traffic on the right-hand side there northbound as you make the drive towards the airport. rosemary, how is it going? >> just fine. outside the doors temperatures finally beginning to turn around. some of those colder spots still below freezing. we are looking at a picture across the bay. you can see a bit of a haze out there. another spare the air day, although we are looking at the air quality index not quite as high as yesterday and that is an improvement in your air quality santa clara valley yesterday we were in the shade of red meaning unhealthy for pretty much everybody. children, adults. but now we're back in the shade of orange for the santa clara valley. we remain above the 100 mark when it comes to the air

quality index. what this means, that shade of orange is if you do have asthma, respiratory issues, suffer from lung disease or anything like that, then this includes you. outside of that a hazy day. a dry day. temperatures well above average once again with a ridge of high pressure in place. we do have a weak system behind the ridge that will bring us an increase in clouds for tomorrow. bring our temperatures down just a little bit but it's not going to bring us any rain. we continue with this dry forecast through the weekend and at this point it looks like december will end on a dry note and make in the driest calendar year on record. let me show you those clouds as we get going this morning. we are mostly clear. a few patches of fog out there and that's really about it. as we get into tomorrow, though, notice 9:00 tomorrow morning increasing clouds especially over the north bay. then as we progress into the afternoon and evening those high clouds will be with us most of the day. by saturday morning clearing out and you saw for yourself no rain involved with that system moving through. right now 31 degrees in santa rosa. 48 san francisco.

host an annual celebration at noon. it honors african-american heritage and culture and was created in 1966 by a cal state long beach professor. 8:55. a las vegas cab driver is being recognized for his honesty after he returned a paper bag filled with $300,000 in cash to its rightful owner. gerardo gamboa made the discovery after dropping off a passenger at the palm's hotel. when he got to his next stop a doorman noticed the paper bag and brought it to the attention of gamboa. >> when i pick up this guy from cosmopolitan and he want to go to palm place and he carry a brown bag. and, you know, who knows what's in there? >> what was in there? $300 inside. gamboa called his company and turned over the cash. the owner of the money, a 28-year-old professional poker player, claimed the cash. for his integrity gamboa was named driver of the year and received dinner for two at a high-end steakhouse and also a
