arrested this -- ernesto rodriguez was arrested this morning and alma roque ortega's family lives down the block. >> probably like, what? down the street. >> reporter: friends say alma roque ortega just graduated from school and seemed to have a bright future. >> so sad. for her, she was 21 years old. like all her life is gone. >> reporter: we have been told ernesto rodriguez is being interviewed but he is expected to be transferred to jail. ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. the family of a 13-year-old girl has found a long term care facility for her in the bay area, that is the word from the family of jahi mcmath. several doctors concluded jahi mcmath is brain dead after complications during a tonsillectomy. a judge ordered her on life support till december 30. the family hopes to coordinate

the transfer to the facility. after keeping watch all night for flair ups firefighters left a home where a fire injured two men. the fire started about 9:00 p.m. last night inside the home on baker street. the two homeowners were rescued. they may have been trying to get out but didn't make it. the fire began on the third floor in the rear of the house and burned to the hop floor. the -- to the top floor. the building also burned to the next door. >> i live in a wooden victorian, we are all vulnerable to what happens with crazy electrical systems. >> the fire is under investigation. it caused $500,000 in damage. it is unlawful in its division making process, that is what was said about the

commission that revoked the city college of san francisco's accreditation. a hearing began today on lawsuits filed by the city attorney and two teachers unions. they are seeking injunctions to keep city college of san francisco open. an attorney told the judge the commission upped the number of alleged deficiencies without notifying city college of san francisco. >> there is political bias behind this. the commission has one idea of community college education and the mission according to the state of california is that city college and all community colleges need to be open access to everybody. >> they said city college of san francisco has financial and administrative problems that render it unfit to fulfill its duties. the court will hear more arguments on monday. shoppers are trying to take advantage of all the sales.

a new law protecting the rights of transgender students will go into effect in six days. it will require unisex bath rooms on campus. ktvu's paul chambers is live and was shown how the school complying. >> reporter: that law goes into effect january 1 however there is a group trying to suspend the law and prevent it from taking place. still schools are taking a proactive approach. we were given a look at the new schools' rest room designated for transgender students. back in august governor jerry brown signed legislation that will require equal access. all high schools and most middle schools are preparing

for the transition. the district is also requiring new construction of school facilities include one baths room for transgender students but leaders say it is just the first step in building a better tolerance. >> reporter: this is about education as well. we have to educate all of our kids. no matter how you are identified it is okay. and that you are not going to suffer. >> reporter: the school district will hold a meeting next month, january 29 on how it plans to deal with the legislation. i triedpaul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. a meeting was held for those effected by the forest fire earlier this month in big sur. the fire is now out but firefighters are still patrolling the area, they are concerned temperatures could cause flir ups. it burned 34 home -- flair ups.

it burned 34 homes. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. brush fire in southern california came close to a highway. the fire started yesterday in simi valley near the 118 freeway. you can see the intensity of the flames. firefighters say they used as many resources to make sure it didn't get out of hand. wind conditions can be unpredictable making small fire as serious threat. if you are planning on heading to the beach, there is a danger of sneaker waves hitting the beach without warning and covering land that had been dry. visitors may not be aware of the potential danger. this warning continues through tomorrow. let's get a look at our bay area forecast and mark tamayo, let's talk more about the waves and the conditions throughout. >> great weather to head out to the beach. you want to be careful because

nasa says a new cooling pump on the international space station is working after two space walks. all non-essential equipment had to be turned off and experiments experiments had to be halted. that pump weighs 800 pounds. astronauts replaced it on sunday and tuesday. officials say there was a back up system in place but it was a serious problem. the u.s. confirmed it sent

5:00 p.m. a burglar steals christmas from a family prompting police to do more than just investigate. saddened by the burglary officers and firefighters stepped up to help the family hit by the christmas eve thief. as ktvu's ken pritchett tells us the children had nothing to open yesterday morning but they had plenty of presents today. the stalking were hung for old saint nick. the victims were children. >> i felt scared. >> reporter: their presents all gone. >> it was very sad. and disappointing. >> reporter: they were out tuesday night. they didn't notice till morning that gifts had been taken from their home. >> for the kids. something that it -- that should never happen. broke their hearts.

a battle is brewing in washington over jobless benefits that are about to expire. hundreds of thousands of them are right here in california. what is at stake on both sides of the debate. >> reporter: 1.3 million without a job for longer than six months will stop receiving unemployment checks saturday. congress approved extra benefits 11 times but not now. with republican opposition it wasn't included in the budget agreement. >> i am hopeful that some of the gritches that prevented us from giving this extra assistance will help. >> reporter: groups fighting to keep it are ramping up pressure with this add calls republicans bad santas. >> folk whose want to work but can't find a job. >> reporter: before heading to hawaii president obama encouraged congress to extend the benefits. >> i think we are a better

taiwan is accusing apple of trying to influence the price of iphones in that country and fined apple. critics say the fine is too small. blackberry's co-founder dropped his bid to take over the smart phone maker. he sold off 3.5 million shares of stock. that reduces his stake to 5%. the cost of a project to restore the delta doubles when you include long term financing. the cost of the project will rise from 25 billion to 67 billion with interest. it involves the building of two underground tunnels. our weather, outside felt like spring out there and earlier we were showing the

we have new information, the family of jahi mcmath who is on life support has now found a long term care facility for her here in the bay area. that ist the word from the family's attorney. several doctors concluded jahi mcmath is brain dead after suffering complications from a tonsillectomy. the hospital says there is no hope and wants to remove the life support. the family is hoping for a miracle and went to court to keep the hospital from doing that while they searched for a long term care facility. the attorney says the family hopes to work with children's hospital to coordinate the transfer to the facility. and their attorney is expected to speak about this live at any moment. these are cameras set up outside the hospital there in oakland. as soon as that attorney and the family come out we will bring you the statements live. ups scrambled to deliver
