is official when 10% of the cases with flu-like symptoms test positive for influenza. for weeks, it's been at 6%. in the past week, numbers jumped to 19%. >> most of the time it manifests as a high fever, respiratory illnesses, achiness, usually a cough. >> reporter: lots of people are going to their local drug store to find medicine to treat the flu, but the best medicine is prevention. most people we met at this cvs store said they had gotten their flu shots, but one family is not planning to. >> we've never gotten them. we feel okay. we feel like getting sick is a part of keeping yourself healthy as well. >> reporter: doctors say the patients they have seen have been hurting. >> some of them are quite miserable. it can be a very unpleasant illness. more importantly it, can be a dangerous illness, particularly in people who are chronically ill, maybe have some problems with their heart or lungs. occasionally, even in otherwise healthy people, it can be very

serious. >> reporter: santa clara county health officials say in all of the last season, there was just one pediatric death in the nation from the flu. this season, there have already been four. >> flu shot, get vaccinated, wash hands. avoid close contact with people that are sick. >> reporter: this year's flu shots are very effective at preventing this season's flu, according to doctors. >> more details now on this season's flu shot. it covers three or four different strains of the flu. the h1n1 flu, which scared the public in 2009, is spreading this year. but it is prevented by the shot, as is the h3n2 strain. there are two strains of influenza b cases as well. a different kind of health problem has made dozens of people sick in an east bay nursing home. coming up in 15 minutes, what's

being done to help people with norovirus and how to keep from getting sick in the first place. a body found floating in the waters of mccove cove last month has been identified as the missing brazilian student paolo netto. but it's still not known how he died. the body was found floating in the waters of the cove six weeks ago. he had disappeared on october 28th from the mission district, after a panicked phone call from his sister in which he said he was being followed and asked her to call police. >> there are a lot of unanswered questions we're hoping to find answers to. >> police want to identify the man seen in this surveillance photo. investigators believe he used net toe's credit card at a mission district mcdonald's just a few days after netto disappeared. a snowboarder with ties to the bay area has died in an avalanche in wyoming. 29-year-old michael kasange was at the jackson hole mountain resort with five others when he

was hit by the avalanche yesterday. his friend, who is a doctor, tried to save his life. they say he was in a high avalanche risk area. michael split time living in both the bay area and jackson, wyoming. the legal fight over jahi mcmath led to a heated exchange today outside children's hospital in oakland. the teenager's family is fighting to keep her on life support, after she suffered complications from tonsil surgery. ktvu's alex savidge is live now with the next steps in this very emotional case. alex? >> reporter: well, the family is trying to make arrangements right now to send jahi to a long-term care facility in southern california, after a place here in the bay area they talked to decided they could not accept the 13-year-old. children's hospital said today they will help with such a move, but the family says they are being forced to jump through hoops to make this transfer happen. >> i've told you the honest truth and you've made it up. >> are you a doctor? >> no! >> reporter: emotions ran high this afternoon during an

argument between the spokesman for children's hospital sam singer and the attorney for the mcmath family, chris dolan. >> this hospital seems hell- bent to stop her heartbeat. >> this is one of the best hospitals in the nation and it helps small, young children and their families t takes care of the indigent and poor. a tragedy occurred here. the only thing you're doing is prolonging the tragedy. >> reporter: jahi was declared brain-dead by a court-appointed doctor, but the family wants to keep her on life support until she can be moved to a long-term care facility. >> we'll have to buy time and go to court. >> reporter: before she can be sent to another facility, she needs to have a new breathing tube in ?ertd her throat and a new feeding tube. children's hospital won't do the surgery because jahi is legally dead. but a spokesman says the hospital would allow an outside doctor to perform those procedures in effort to help with the transfer. >> this becomes at a certain

point the very sad thing for the attorney to perpetuate a myth that jahi mcmath will get better. she unfortunately won't. she's dead. >> reporter: children's hospital is also requiring jahi's family to tell them where the girl is going to be taken and how she'll be transferred there. the family's attorney believes the hospital is purposely putting up roadblocks. >> it's because what this hospital is doing is telling this family we'll decide what's going to happen to jahi, not you, even if it kills her. that's absurd. >> reporter: a judge has said jahi can be taken off life support after monday at 5:00 p.m. if a transfer from the hospital doesn't happen before then. the mcmath family attorney plans to go to court first thing monday morning, filing a restraining order to try and prevent that from happening. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news, in oakland. police in some of the bay area's most dangerous areas are

gearing up to keep residents safe on new year's eve. in preparing of new year's eve, oakland police are cracking down on the illegal use of fireworks and celebratory gunfire. the city of richmond has a similar plan in place. the two departments will be deploying officers to specific areas of the city that have the highest amount of gunshot and fire work activity indicated by those shots spotter systems. those systems can pinpoint a gunshot within very close range. happening now, ac transit workers are voting on a third agreement with management. workers have voted down the past two. some employees tell ktvu news this agreement isn't any different. but management says it's a good deal. if workers reject this latest contract offer, that could lead to a strike. voting goes on until 7:00 tonight. we are told that results should be known before midnight. it's going to cost you more to ride bart in the new year.

starting january 1st, fares will go up 5.2%. that's an average increase of 19spents for a one-way trip. while most americans are considering new possibilities for the new year, thousands of bay area residents are staring straight into the financial abyss beginning tomorrow, because their long-term employment benefits are coming to an end. ktvu spent time at the unemployment office in concord today to see what that means on a very personal level. try and try as she has, former full-time tax preparer sheryl orn steen hasn't been able to find a steady job for almost four years, taking pickup work whenever she can. >> i just don't see at my stage of the game being able to find full-time good, decent-paying job for a woman in her early

sixties. >> reporter: nonetheless, come tomorrow, she loses her long- term unemployment benefits because congress cut them off. >> there's nothing i can do about t. >> reporter: she is one of 36,000 bay area residents, 222,000 californians, and more than a million u.s. long-term unemployed in the same sinking boat. >> you're in that position where you're running out of benefits and don't have anything that's landed yet. you're in a tough spot, no doubt about it. >> reporter: many will be in abject poverty. >> next step for some will likely be looking to safety net programs. >> i wake up at 3:00 in the morning, wondering how i'm going to take care of things, take care of my pets, make sure they are taken care of. >> reporter: and to make matters worse, her attempt to get healthcare through the covered california website has proven unfruitful in more than a move multiple sign-ups. through it all, she refuses to lose hope or give up.

>> what good is that going to do me? persevere. you got to struggle through it. >> reporter: despite all the efforts to fight their way through the worst recession we've seen in a lifetime, the long-term unemployed are about to get kicked in the teeth once again. ktvu channel 2news. president obama is pushing to extend those expiring unemployment benefits. he has told two senators making the proposal that he plans to push congress to do it quickly. target today confirmed that those hackers that targeted the discount chain stole customer pin numbers, but the company says the numbers were strongly encrypted and target is insisting that customers' debit card accounts have not been compromised. the hackers stole information from as many as 40 million customers between november 27th through december 15th. it is one of the largest recorded data security breaches in the country. new data from the census bureau shows the bay area is

home to the richest city in america. san jose ranked number 1. the u.s. census bureau chose the area for its median income, which topped $90,000 a year, and because it has high-paying jobs and a desirable housing market. some city officials out san jose is still scraping by budget wise and needs more rich companies. >> though our region, our metropolitan area has many jobs and great wealth, for the most part, what creates tax revenue in the city of san jose are employers. >> one downside could be that the title could make it tough politically for san jose to keep cutting benefits and programs. here's the top five. san jose, as reported, number 1. washington, dc ranked second, with bridgeport connecticut coming in third. san francisco took the fourth spot, and boston came in at number 5. shares of twitter today slipped to their lowest levels since the company's november 6th initial public offering. analysts with macquarie capital

downgraded the social networking company, saying the stock has gone too far, too fast. soon after, shares began falling. the analyst also said he believed twitter has a bright future and many opportunities ahead. twitter shares fell 13% to close at $63.75. the stock had almost tripled through yesterday, since its ipo. a bay area nursing home hit hard. sick residents contaminated building, all the work that was done to make sure the facility is now free of the norovirus. >> a disagreement over what to do with trees damaged in a wildfire. why groups are battling over burned trees. >> more clouds and cooler temperatures today across the entire bay area, but some weekend changes, coming up. the warmest day this weekend when temperatures could be hitting the 70-degree mark and when rain chances increase on the long-range weather maps. wouldn't it be nice if there was a wireless company

. a happy ending to a mysterious disappearance we have been following since early this morning. a navy veteran disappeared from san francisco general hospital 10 days ago, but will sell's family was frantic. they had been searching golden gate park and lands end. earlier this afternoon we were told that will sell has been found. we don't have any other details, though, but do know that he is safe. activist cindy sheehan made it official today she is running for governor. sheehan picked up candidacy papers from the celano county register of voters in fairfield this morning. she needs to gather 15,000 signatures to be placed on the ballot. she is challenging governor brown to reform the education

and prison system in california. >> i have a lot of support in california. with the top two primary and with the way things are looking now, you know, we're very optimistic. >> sheehan gained national attention after her son casey was killed in iraq in 2004 and she staged a protest outside then-president george w. bush's texas ranch. more details now on the race for california governor. two members of the republican party have already thrown their hats in the ring. former lieutenant governor able maldonado announced he is in the race. former minuteman leader tim donley declared his candidacy. current governor jerry brown has officially said he will seek a fourth terminix year, but it is expected that he will. a walnut creek nursing home and rehab facility is recovering from a norovirus outbreak. over two dozen people got sick from the stomach illness, but are now doing okay.

how the facility responded to the illness and what needs to be done to keep it from happening again. >> reporter: a norovirus found its way into the kindred rehab center in walnut creek. the contagious stomach illness quickly spread into an outbreak, sickening 30 people since last week. >> we were contacted by the facility to let us know that they had persons ill with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. >> reporter: susan farley with the contra costa health department says they don't know the source of the outbreak. kindred increased their cleaning, put up signs at the entrance and asked visitors to wash their hands to protect their elderly patients. >> elderly persons are vulnerable to having fairly severe illness when they have it, so our infants and young children, they tend to be sicker. >> reporter: right now is the peak season for norovirus outbreaks, so farley warns others to take precautions. >> it's highly contagious. it's really important to wash

your hands. you must use soap and water. >> reporter: kindred released a statement today, saying the care and concern of their parents is their number one priority. this is one of 10 norovirus outbreaks in contra costa this year. there's a fight over trees burned in the big fire in yosemite. the u.s. forest service plans to harvest timber from nearly 47 square miles of forest torched by the rim fire. environmental groups, though, oppose the plan. the timber could be used for construction. the rim fire charred more than 400 square miles, destroyed 11 homes, and caused $70 million in damage. the forest service says sale of the timber could be used for replanting and fire recovery efforts. environmentalists, though, say the dead trees are essential to forest health. a spare the air alert is in effect today. air quality managers are calling for yet another tomorrow. it is illegal to use fireplaces, wood stoves and outdoor fire pits during a winter spare the air alert.

that's because during the winter season, wood smoke is the highest source of particulate solution. >> as we talked about earlier, today from the oakland hills, there was so much haze, literally could not see san francisco at all. seems like it's clearing a little bit tonight. >> a little bit. visibilities were down about 5 miles. that makes sense if you're looking from the oakland hills toward san francisco, not seeing much with all the haze. cooler temperatures. so we had the haze and high clouds paying us a visit this afternoon. you can see all the upper 50s and lower 60s earlier today. temperatures down a good 5 to 10 degrees from yesterday's highs. we had mostly cloudy skies today. in fact, this was the time lapse right before sunset, with the overcast skies. but a few breaks in the clouds, and you can see the sunset. but the nice layer of overcast pushing into the region tonight. here's the latest on the satellite perspective. no rain clouds here, but just a solid blanket of overcast here over the bay area. but the back edge here, now moving into parts of sonoma

county. with that throughout the evening hours, we are expecting clearing skies. for tonight, we do have this in the short-term, mostly cloudy. this weekend, hazy sunshine. it will be mild to warm, at least for tomorrow in san francisco. we'll take a look at the forecast time line. 7:00, 45 degrees, on track to reach lower 60s. tomorrow, warmer. then the extended, partly cloudy skies, dry weather pattern will continue. overnight lows, first thing tomorrow morning, coolest locations, subfreezing. santa rosa and napa. could have patchy frost in those neighborhoods. widespread upper 30s to lower 40s. san francisco, 45. san jose, 39 degrees. so you can see on the satellite, the clouds drifting to the south. that will be the overall track over the next six to 12 hours. no rain drops expected. high pressure returns this weekend. that will initiate the warming trend friday, saturday and sunday. warmest locations on sunday could be flirting with the 70- degree mark. with this pattern developing, those offshore winds, believe it or not, fire danger goes up into the weekend here in the

bay area. but especially down toward southern california, strongest winds expected in the mountains of los angeles county. as far as our rain chances, it is dry basically for the remainder of 2013. but by january 5th, january 6th, 7th, we could be tracking a pattern change that could bring rainfall back into the forecast. for tonight, mostly clear skies by 11:00. then tomorrow, maybe a patch or two of cloud cover out there, but increasing sunshine into the afternoon hours. watch out for an increase in the west-northwest swell throughout the day tomorrow. could be approaching 5 to 10 feet with the waves out there. forecast highs, these numbers up a good 4 to 8 degrees from today's highs. oakland, 64. livermore, 66. more neighborhoods with san jose at 65. sunnyvale, 64 degrees. san francisco, in the lower 60s. here is a look ahead at your five-day forecast with your weekend always in view. we are warming back up, especially by sunday. pretty much the same weather pattern monday, tuesday and wednesday, as we greet 2014 with partly cloudy skies. not a rain drop in sight, but could be changing in early january. we'll keep an eye on that. >> hope so. >> thanks, mark.

. fight hunger bowl is about to get under way at at&t park in san francisco. the byu cougars and the washington huskies face-off today in a game that signaled the end of a holiday tradition. next year, the bowl game will be played south of san francisco, at the 49ers new stadium. >> we've had a great run here with the san francisco giants. they have been tremendous partners. next year, we will be moving down to levi's stadium in santa clara. >> the bowl spokesman says while the menu is changing, the benefactors will not. san francisco's live memorial church, st. anthony's and san francisco's food bank will still receive donations. mark is off. time to say good-bye to a few players today. >> he doesn't have a signature moment in his 11-year nfl career, but he's a three-time pro bowler.

everything he accomplished was done with class, including today's retirement ceremony in alameda. the 32-year-old was surrounded by other great defensive backs of raider lore. lester hays, charles woodson, willie brown, former cal star signed a one-day contract in order to retire, or as he prefers to call it, graduate as a raider. he never played in a post season game. this is his only nfl touchdown, back in 2006 against the steelers. today he thanked all of his mentors, the fans, and the late al davis who drafted him in the first round and convinced him to switch positions. >> he said what position do you want to play? and i told him safety. obviously, he wasn't trying to hear that because he said to me, you know, i think that you have a chance to be one of the greatest corners we've had here. you have that ability in you. you know, you don't see it yet, but you have it in you. finally at the end, just because i saw that he believed in me, he asked me again, so what position do you want to

[ laughter ] well, the 49ers lost their wide receiver mario manningham for the rest of the season to injury today, but the good news, eight different players were selected to the pro bowl. that includes three line backers, ahmad brooks, patrick willis and navarro bowman. remember him? scoring the final touchdown ever at candlestick. he leads the team with 183 tackles. defensive tackle justin smith is also a pro bowler. there's navarro. look at him go. four offensive players are also in, as tight end vernon davis leads the group. frank gore, two linemen also in. eight total players ties kansas city for the most by any one team to get in the pro bowl. six others were selected as alternates. >> tony romo -- and cowboys quarterback tony romo had back surgery today, so he'll be out for the rest of the season. that means kyle orton will make his first start in two years on
