f0 this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6. time is running out for a teenage girl on life support after tonsil surgery. less than 24 hours remain before children's hospital in oakland will be legally free to take her off life support. while the family has raised enough money to move her to another facility, they now have nowhere that will take her. good evening and thank you for joining us for this special postgame edition of ktvu channel 2 news. i'm ken wayne. heather holmes is off tonight. jahi mcmath's family today reached their $20,000 fund- raising goal. but today we learned none of the facilities in talks to take the girl have panned out. all of this just one day before tomorrow's 5 p.m. deadline to take her off life support. new developments now.

ktvu's debra is live at children's hospital in oakland. >> reporter: ken, a fund-raiser to pay for jahi's airlift out of here was abruptly cancelled this evening, in part because the money is already there, but also, no doors are open. >> look at this situation, god. give them the heart as if it was their child as opposed to pointing the finger, god. >> reporter: jahi's mother's pastor led prayer for peace and healing, as the battle over keeping jahi on life support takes yet another turn. already a los angeles medical facility had backed out of accepting the brain-dead teenager. now a new york hospital said no as well. >> we definitely don't want to raise funds, you know, for something that is not ironclad. >> reporter: when today's fund- raiser was planned at this church, the family had about $400 towards the cost of moving jahi. but in just two days of

soliciting on the gofundme website, online donations already top the money needed to airlift here. >> that's a miracle. the community evidently sees, you know, what's going on. and they want to give jahi a chance to live. >> reporter: but her time on life support has a court- ordered limit. without an appeal, they can pull jahi's ventilator tomorrow evening. >> there's a 5:00 deadline tomorrow. i believe it's critical to say, up until that time, we're going to continue to pray good you are the comforter. comfort the hearts of the families right now, god. >> reporter: an hour ago, outside the hospital -- >> no amount of hope, no amount of prayer, can bring her back. >> reporter: a spokesperson declared there's a reason facilities are refusing to take jahi. >> she is deceased. she's on a ventilator. she has no chance of coming

back, under any circumstance. >> reporter: and the deadline stands. >> when 5:00 comes around, the ventilator will be removed. >> reporter: jahi would have to leave children's with a breathing tube and a feeding tube, procedures this hospital refuses to do on a deceased person. now, her family has not been vocal today. their pastor says they are at her bedside and consulting with their attorney on what to do next. reporting live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on the emotional fight to keep jahi mcmath on life support. the 13-year-old oakland teen went in for a tonsillectomy to help with sleep apnea. that was on december 9. she was declared brain-dead on december 12, after complications and after suffering cardiac arrest. a judge issued a restraining order that said oakland children's hospital cannot take

jahi off life support until monday, tomorrow, december 30. taking a live look now at the gofundme page that's been set up for jahi, you can see more than $21,000 has been raised for jahi since this page was set up two days ago. that is more than the family's goal of $20,000. our web team has posted a link to that page on ktvu.com. a collision between a car and a san francisco fire truck sent two people, including a firefighter, to the hospital. the accident happened just before 11 a.m. at fifth and howard streets in the city's south of market neighborhood. the firefighter was treated in the hospital and released. people in the area said they knew something was wrong as soon as they heard the crash. >> i just heard like a big bang. so i came outside to check out what's going on. >> i've only been here for five months. i've never really seen anything that big happen out here. >> the crash caused traffic

problems late this morning when police closed the 5th and howard intersection. a busy intersection, so it could investigate the collision. earlier this morning in san francisco, an suv struck and killed a pedestrian. it happened around 2:30 in the morning as the pedestrian was walking along the 4th street on ramp to westbound interstate 80. the driver stopped and is cooperated with police. the highway patrol does not believe alcohol was a factor in this crash. the on-ramp was closed for about two hours. continuing coverage on the drought concerns here in california. as we approach the end of the dryest calendar year on record. here in the bay area, water agencies are starting to worry a little bit, as ktvu's alex savidge reports. they're hoping the new year will bring more rain. >> reporter: it's been a bone- dry year across california. san francisco is poised to set a record with just over five and a half inches of rainfall. and anxiety is growing at bay area water agencies.

east bay mud sierra watershed has picked up just 4.5 inches of rain since october. >> that is less than 30% of average. that's where we're worried. even with the lack of rainfall this year, east bay mud's reservoirs are still 68% full. that's very close to average. but the next few months are critical. this water in storage won't last long. if the agency doesn't see significant rainfall soon, a drought could be the next step. everyone here will be watching the forecast closely. >> cautiously monitoring the rainfall situation and the snow situation. in february, if things don't begin to change, then we will begin to take steps to prepare. >> reporter: the board will decide in may whether to declare a drought, meaning either volunteer or mandatory water rationing. already people in parts of

sacramento county are being required to cut water use by 20%. there is no rain or snow in the forecast anywhere in the state, between now and the end of the year. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> reservoirs in the south bay are about 34% of normal right now. santa clara county water officials say creeks are drying up, causing problems for wildlife that depend on the water. conditions are not prompting mandatory water conservation yet. they say usually those decisions are made later in the winter. we've been tracking the dry weather all year. >> ken, one day of measurable rainfall in december. we're really falling behind in terms of rainfall. in terms of drought, a good portion of the state, that is a moderate drought. we're also watching out for that red area, approaching the bay area. that is a severe drought. that's all the result of not much in the way of rainfall so

far for this early rainfall county, -- count, as far as the season. we're not going to add a drop of rainfall to these totals. santa rosa, only 8.5 inches of rainfall this year. san jose, 3.8. in terms of san francisco, in fact, a good portion of the state, this will be the dryest calendar year on record. san francisco, the dryest was in 1917, with 9 inches. but we're clearly going to beat that. as i mentioned, we are confident no more raindrops in our forecast over the next few days. coming up in a few minutes, the temperature change you can expect for tomorrow. and i'll let you know if we have any rain clouds on our five-day forecast. once again, coming up in ten minutes. >> thank you, mark. air quality officials did not issue a spare the air alert for tomorrow and that ends a seven-day streak. conditions are expected to improve tomorrow. the spare the air alert today bans wood burning, indoors and out, unless it's your only

source of heat. during the winter season, air equality officials say wood smoke is the largest source of harmful pollution. members of raiders nation are helping 19-year-old dominique romero, who was paralyzed by a stray bullet. they collected donations today. it was put together by the anti- crime group "make oakland better." dominique's mother is grateful for the community spirit that's helping her family. >> raider nation, they are awesome. people are out here helping me, supporting me, asking me what i need, you know and when somebody new comes, they pull them over, tell them what we're doing. it's awesome. >> her mother says dominique is doing well and working on her physical therapy. police have not arrested a suspect, in which a bullet came through her wall and hit her, as she was watching television in her home. 49ers hit the sports bar today for the final game of the

fire crews in oakland were on the scene this morning of a two-alarm fire at an abandoned building. they got the call for a fire on foothills boulevard in east oakland. the building is right across the street there the fremont municipal pool. nobody was hurt, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. police in antioch are investigating a shooting inside a home that injured two people. it happened around 8:30 last night on claiborne road near lone tree way after people reportedly knocked and were let inside the home. when police arrived, they say they found a 20-year-old woman shot twice. and they say a 29-year-old man

was also shot but fled the scene. he later arrived at a local hospital. both victims are expected to survive. no arrests have been made. new at 6:00, a dramatic drop in doe naigs leaves a bay area wildlife museum asking for help. officials say their future depends on it. east bay families flock to the lindsay wildlife museum every weekend. but leaders of the nonprofit animal hospital say they may have to cut back on programs. here's what can be done to help the hospital and its animal patients. >> that would require them to hunt more. >> reporter: call it animal attraction. the lindsay wildlife museum is a huge draw for bay area families. >> two very active boys, and they love coming here. it certainly is a good distraction for them on the weekend. >> reporter: samantha fraguas and her son arthur make the trip to walnut creek. >> we come that often, even though i leave far away.

>> reporter: they have even rescued a hawk. >> the hawk stayed here for a week. and they brought it back to our backyard to release. and that was, i think, the most unique experience we had, encountering a wild animal. really nice. >> so far this year, veterinarians, staff and volunteers have treated 5600 animals here at the hospital. and they need about $500,000 to make it all work. >> we've treated a lot more animals. but we've actually been operating on a smaller budget. we've had less donations this year than we have in previous years. >> reporter: with donations down, it may mean less money for programs and exhibits. >> we try to make it a positive experience for people. we don't want to talk about our problems in a lot of ways. but at the end of the day, we do depend on our donors' support. >> reporter: they hope the call of the wild and their call for

support will be enough. so children like arthur can further foster a love and understanding of wildlife. in walnut creek, ktvu channel 2 news. a woman suffering from alzheimer's disease who went missing last night in alameda has been found safe. harriet disappeared after going out for a walk with her dog. police launched a ground and air search. today we learned holbrook was found safe with her dog. if it seemed a little warmer than usual out there today, you're right. mark is in the weather center. we set some records? >> yes, we set some records. 60's and even a few low 70's. low 70's. one of those records was out towards oakland. oakland downtown, 73 degrees. san francisco, 66. that was a record. in mountain view, tying a

record at 68. so another warm day out there across the entire bay area. we're going to trim back a little on the very warm readings. but overnight lows, waking up to some very cold mornings over the past few days. cooler spots, into the upper 20's for santa rosa and napa. fairfield, right around 30. livermore, 33. and san francisco, 45. mostly clear skies. high clouds will be increasing throughout the day, especially after 1:00 or 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. you can count on patchy frost. here's the forecast. as i mentioned, the cold spots up in the north bay. we'll take a look, areas of frost out there. and temperatures in santa rosa at 7:00, right around 30 degrees. instead of upper 60's tomorrow, we'll go with 66. for napa, the forecast high, 66. san rafael, starting off the day in the 30's. on track to reach the lower 60's.

for san francisco and the peninsula, starting out with fair skies. but we'll call it partly sunny for your monday afternoon. temperature in san francisco, mid-40's at 7:00. even in pacifica, warming back up into the lower 60's for tomorrow. these numbers still a little bit above the average, even though we are shaving off a few degrees. we are waiting for the raindrops, but none expected. oakland will start out the day at 7:00, 37 degrees. fremont in the upper 30's at 7:00. all neighborhoods back up into right around 64 to 65 degrees for tomorrow afternoon. and in the south bay, still a lot of sunshine out there, with the bulk of the cloud cover to the north of san jose and morgan hill. you can see temperatures by lunchtime right around 60 degrees. and then approaching the mid- 60's by 3:00 for sunnyvale, san jose and also morgan hill. temperatures tomorrow, just a little cooler than today. we'll take a look at monday.

we now know the name of the man shot to death early this morning in san francisco. police say 36-year-old david gilford the ii of modesto was standing outside when somebody opened fire. it happened about 1:45 a.m. he was taken to san francisco general hospital where he later died. so far, police have not released a possible motive. no arrests have been made. new developments tonight about a serial bank robber who

galvanized forces across the nation after killing a police officer. police have identified the suspect as 40-year-old mario edward garnett. the secret service says garnett was convicted of threatening president obama in 2010. he was sentenced to eight months in federal prison and ordered to get mental health care upon his release. phoenix police shot and killed garnett yesterday when he tried to rob a bank there. melissa has details of the crimes and the manhunt. >> reporter: a six-day nationwide manhunt is over. the search for the accused bank robber and cop killer came to an end in phoenix saturday, following another bank heist. >> i heard one boom boom boom. >> reporter: phoenix police have identified the now deceased suspect as 40-year-old mario edward garnett. >> at this point, i cannot tell you what his relationship is to phoenix or even to arizona, because we have absolutely no record of mr. garnett in our city, and we have found none in

our state. >> reporter: the fbi says the crime spree began monday morning when a man tried to rob an atlanta bank and failed. authorities believe he then went to mississippi where he held up a bank and got caught in a gun fight with police, shooting two officers. one of those officers, gayle stauffer, died. the suspect wasn't spotted again until saturday in phoenix. that's when police say he robbed a bank and fired at an officer. >> the officer was trying to retreat and take cover. at that point, the officer fired at the suspect. >> reporter: garnett was killed. no one else was hurt. officials say cell phone records confirm the suspect was in atlanta, tupelo and phoenix at the time of the robberies. >> this investigation is not over. all of the evidence gathered by investigators following the phoenix robbery must be examined and compared with that gathered from the atlanta and tupelo crime scenes. there are numerous leads which

is approaching. and once again, new laws take effect, including changes on the road for both drivers and bicyclists. there are a few new laws you should know about. ken joins us now in san francisco with some of the laws that might get you a ticket. >> reporter: it's not unusual to have a long list of new traffic laws with the new year. but this year, that list is relatively short, with only one law having a wide impact on all the drivers and cyclists on the road. jim and his seven-year-old son decided to bike san francisco today, a city that he feels is bike-friendly. >> it's safe. >> reporter: but he says sometimes the cars creep a bit too close. >> if i'm in the middle of two lanes, one lane with moving cars and one lane with parked cars, i try to stay in the middle of that. >> reporter: we witnessed it. cars and bikes passing each other with just a foot or two to spare. a new law is intended to

prevent accidents like we've seen this past year by requiring cars to keep a minimum distance of three feet when passing cyclists. >> that will be great. >> reporter: the new bike law may be the most significant traffic law this coming year. but there are others. drivers who have green or white carpool lane stickers can use them longer. they're now extended to 2019. metal license plates and registration stickers may soon be a thing of the past. a new bill let's the dmv come up with something new, such as traffic plates. leaving the new bike law dubbed three feet for safety as the only one that impacts all drivers, cyclists like it but wonder, who is really going to measure request -- going to measure? >> i think it's tough to enact, how you make sure that each car is three feet away.

>> reporter: well, the bike law likely -- actually, will not kick in until the fall, so there's some time on that one. another law that's received quite a bit of attention is a law that will allow undocumented imgrants to receive a special kind of driver's license. this new law will allow the dmv to prepare to issue those driver's licenses but that likely won't kick in until january 1 of 2015. more details now. one of the new laws on the books, as of the new year, is a ban on teens and texting behind the wheel. we told you about the law earlier this week. texting is already illegal. but not while using a voice command. but anyone under 18 years old is prohibited from using an electronic device to text while driving, that is, even if the phone is equipped with a hands- free device. retired formula 1 driver michael schumacher is reported in critical condition tonight after a skiing accident in europe. the seven-time formula 1 champion fell while skiing in

the french alps. he arrived in a coma and underwent brain surgery. los angeles dodgers outfielder yasiel puig is in trouble again, with police and his team. the florida highway patrol says it clocked puig yesterday doing 110 miles an hour in a 70-mile- an-hour zone. the 23-year-old hitter was arrested, handcuffed and booked on a charge of reckless driving. the dodgers issued a statement, saying the team was, quote, disappointed in the power hitter. earlier this year, puig was arrested in tennessee on similar charges. more than a dozen people were killed after a suicide bomber struck a busy train station in russia today. this dramatic video shows the attack as it happened at the volgograd railway station this morning. 16 people were killed. and 50 people injured.

>> reporter: all hell broke loose. shards of glass, thrown into the air. i received a concussion and smoke billowed from inside. >> everything was covered in smoke. after ten minutes, i was able to see again. and there were bodies everywhere. inside the train station itself, everything is destroyed. >> nobody has claimed responsibility. the bombing highlights the security challenges if facing russian officials as they get ready to host the winter olympics in sochi. the army said today it fought with white army youth militias in south sudan. the government says the majority of the 25,000-strong white army have abandoned their march on the city of bor. two weeks of fighting have left at least 1,000 people dead and displaced more than 100,000.

congressional republicans defended their assertion that al-qaeda was involved in last year's attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. this weekend, the new york times reported its investigations, based on interviews in benghazi with people with direct knowledge on the attack, turned up no evidence that al-qaeda or other international terrorist groups had any role in the assault. but the question is, where? how do you define the group involved in the attack? >> the group that was involved, which they say was involved, is part of the al-qaeda network. while it's not officially linked to al-qaeda, in all the years i've been briefed on intelligence matters, they are considered part of the al-qaeda network. >> the new york sometimes describes the group as an independent militia and a purely local extremist organization. days after the attack, the obama administration said it

was inspired by spontaneous street protests that got out of hand. members of congress reacted to edward snowden's statement that his mission is accomplished. he said that he wanted the public to know about nsa spying and that he wants future decisions about preventing terrorism made openly. a new york congressman, peter king, says snowden did real damage. >> what snowden has done has unraveled a significant part of the defenses we had set up after september 11, not just defense but some of our preemptive abilities, to stop something before it happens. >> snowden's team says it's time for the supreme court to take up whether the nsa spying is legal. lower courts have had controversial rulings. new leaks exposing practices by the nsa's hacker unit that reportedly affected

microsoft. a german magazine accuses american spies of hijacking software. the division, called tailor access operations, reportedly has sophisticated equipment for cracking and also plants malicious software. federal officials today said more than a million people used the government website in december to sign up for health insurance. experts estimate about another one million used state-run markets to enroll, pushing the total number of people enrolled to about two million. the federal website serves 36 states. 14 states, including california, have their own sites. the overall goal is to enroll seven million people by march 31. it appears the swine flu is back, making people miserable around the country and here in the bay area. the swine flu or h1n1 struck in the string of 2009 and spread around the u.s. it never entirely went away. health officials say many of the new flu cases being diagnosed around the bay area in recent weeks are the 2009

>> with a little help from spider-man, organizers of new year's celebrations in times square tested out handfuls of confetti. on tuesday night, a ton of confetti will rain down on the crowd there. supreme court justice sonia will lead the countdown. the justice was called an inspiration to new yorkers. san franciscoers muni is offering free rides on new year's eve. people out late on new year's can take, free of charge, muni buses, light rails and cable cars for all the lines and routes. the service starts at 8 p.m. on new year's eve and runs through 5 p.m. on new year's day. this is the 14th year that the municipal transportation agency has offered those free rides. no excuses for drinking and driving. mark, we're anxious about the weather on new year's eve. >> the weather will be cooperating just fine, no rain clouds expected. no umbrellas needed and the fog

showing you clear skies, a few high clouds. lots of clear skies out there. we're going to hold on to that pattern with temperatures dropping. for this evening, we'll go with clear conditions. tomorrow, partly sunny. a little bit cooler. our live camera looking out toward the bay bridge in san francisco. at 7:00, mid-40's. by 12:00, 59. forecast high, the low 60's. for january 1, 2014, a sun- cloud mix. but the dry weather pattern will continue. the main storm track out to the north of the bay area, one day of measurable rainfall this month. very strange. that was way back on december 6. no raindrops expected. this area of high pressure, for the most part, remains in command of our weather. it's going to weaken a little bit for tomorrow and into tuesday. a few clouds will move in from the north. a little bit of a drop-off in temperatures. but no big temperature swings and no significant storms showing up just yet. in terms of potential rainfall, the forecast models try to get a better idea maybe sometime by

january 6, 7, 8, there is a chance we could have a pattern change. but still, too far out to go into detail just yet. tomorrow morning, in the clear. but then i was talking about those high clouds moving in from the north, between 3, 4 and 5:00 tomorrow. your monday forecast, definitely want to bundle up first thing tomorrow morning. the coolest spots, upper 20's. but widespread 30's, low to mid- 40's. by lunchtime, 57 to 62. by the afternoon, everybody cooling off. no more 70's but still the warmest locations, fairly warm for this time of year. mid- to upper 60's. your five-day forecast, making plans for new year's eve, you just need the jacket, because temperatures dropping off quickly. but no umbrellas needed. 2014 starts out the same 2013 ended, still basically try. the mild weather pattern sticks around. to day 6 and 7, with your

>> i tweeted it so you can take a closer look. the mother said she was glad the animal didn't come any closer to her son. hundreds of oakland school children got to hear from an oakland raider and then watched the game for free. the first in goal program by the raiders has been busy this year, arranging for 800 students to attend each regular- season home game. today's speaker was tony stewart, who told the students preparation and practice are two keys to success. >> i have four kids of my own. anytime we take them to an experience like this, it changes them, i think, for the better. it gives them a new lens to look at life through. gives them just hope. >> after the program, students were treated to lunch before being escorted to their seats to watch today's game. coming up, the raiders wrap up their season against the broncos. and we found out who the niners will face in the play-offs. sports wrap with fred is next.

good evening, everyone. and thanks for joining our early sunday edition of sports wrap. the play-off-bound 49ers had to sweat one out today in arizona's 65-degree weather. but they survived. their reward? a trip to the frozen tundra! colin kaepernick, the former cardinals receiver boldin. nine catches, 149 yards today. niners score off their first three possessions. short and sweet. 17-0 first quarter. but cardinals score is the next 17 points to tie it.

and those packers, with their quarterback aaron rodgers, who broke his collarbone eight weeks ago, well, rodgers got revenge today. 4th and 8, now or never! now! rodgers for the 48-yard touchdown. green bay wins to claim the afc north. 49ers are headed to lambeau, folks. today, seahawks beat the visiting rams. big play from seattle's strength. what else? its defense. thank you! seattle wins 27-9 to clinch the top seed and home field advantage. future hall of fame tight end tony -- gonzalez was honored today in atlanta. picked off by melvin white

here. quarterback cam newton. carolina wins, 21-20. number 1 seed and number 2 seed carolina earn a first-round bye. 49ers visit green bay next weekend. terrelle pryor had another chance today to prove to all the raiders and all the raider nation that he is their quarterback of the future. he did throw two late td passes and set a new team rushing record by a quarterback. but he's no peyton manning. peyton manning added to his new record for most touchdown passes in a single season. there in oakland. he already had his 52nd of the season. then adds his 53rd when knowshon moreno runs it. raiders had just three first downs in the first half. broncos had 16! they're chasing but not

catching. 63-yard touchdown. 24-0. manning needed 256 yards to set a single-season record for passing. of course, he gets to exactly 266 on that toss to thomas. they win 31-14. raiders finish 4-and-12 for the second straight season. san diego chargers are the third afc west team to make the play-offs. today, kansas city, well, they were already in, so they held off their starting quarterback. nick novak kicks the goal in overtime. but the chiefs get a chance to win the game. but chase daniel -- it's just not gonna happen. chargers win their last four games, to sneak in as the final seed of the afc. so, top seed, denver. second seed, new england. they get next week off. chargers travel to cincinnati. chiefs play at indianapolis. the day and the times for those play-offs should be announced at our 10:00 sports wrap.

warriors have been playing well lately. but they opened a seven-game road trip in cleveland, where they almost made a mistake. golden state made it hard for themselves, trailing the cavs by as much as 17 points in the first half. but stephen curry scored. and he cut the cavs' lead to 9 at halftime. david lee responds with 19 points in the second half. the cavs force overtime, where they outscore cleveland in that extra five minutes. nice pass by andre iguodala. the warriors win their fifth straight and play in orlando on
