the driver in this accident did stop, is cooperating, and is not expected to face charges. reporting live in fremont, noel walker, ktvu, channel 2 news. new at 10:00, a human skull was discovered in the oakland hills under strange circumstances this evening. police say they got an anonymous tip about 5:40, the skull was found just off grizzly peak boulevard. it was sitting on a paper plate, and surrounded by a silver chain. we spoke to one man who was in the area tonight. >> taking it in with my family, enjoying the view, and trying to not think about something terrible like that. >> the alameda county core nor has been culled into the scene to investigate -- called into the scene to investigate. the mother of a boy shot and killed on new year's eve says he was coming home from a party at the boys and glirls club. tonight, she talked with jana katsuyama about what witnesses

said happened just before he was shot. >> reporter: friends and neighbors gathered with the candles glowing in the evening light. >> i could only ask god, why did this happen, would did he do to deserve this? nothing at all. >> reporter: lee's mother says her youngest son was about 5'9", big for his age, and loved basketball and video games. >> the last phone call i got from him at 5:47. he said mom, i'm on my way home. i'm going to stop at the taco truck and get a burrito. >> reporter: the family said witnesses told them lee was with two other boys when a dark four door car pulled up be and two young men jumped out and fired shots. lee's two friends ran away, and he died at the scene.

fire. her friends drove her to the hospital, it was there she was pronounced dead. it has happened again. another major security breach of personal data. this time the phone numbers and millions of names of snapchat users. it comes after researchers published details about a vulnerability with the app. hackers say their goal is to put pressure on snapchat to fix the problem. the popular app allows users to share photos and videos that disappear after a few seconds. another security breach. this one involving skype's company blog, twitter account and facebook page. hackers posted messages warning users not to use hotmail, and claimed information was being sold to the government. b.a.r.t. and muni fares are going up for the new year. it affects every rider on every

is still being sought. police say during the chase, a firearm was thrown out of the car, and it has been recovered. officers say the suspect was taken to the hospital, and he had minor injuries from that crash. a new delay tonight for the rescue of passengers of a ship that has been stuck in the ice for the past 72 days. the chopper was supposed to take them to a chinese icebreaker, then they could take a barge to an australia icebreaker. but sea ice is keeping it from getting to the chinese ship. two of the passengers onboard are from richmond. they are known for their adventures, but this is likely like none others. absolutely amazing, that's how the owner of a marijuana store in colorado described this first day of business, as dan springer reports, today marks the start of a new era in poll sales with colorado opening the first state

b.a.r.t. police officer mehserle, a jury convicted him of involuntary manslaughter and a judge sentenced him to two years in prison. he was released after 11 months. he was given credit for time served. a remarkable act of forgiveness in denver today, the father of the teenager girl who was killed in the colorado high school shooting last month said he and his wife have forgiven her killer. michael davis made the comments during a memorial service for his 17-year-old daughter claire. he said her last wordser -- words were to carl piercen, asking what he was doing.

i don't think i could do that. more on the rose bowl. the 100th rose bowl, and what happened to stanford at the very end. >> yeah, didn't go so well. today it just took michigan state one quarter to start living up to the repetition. looking for its second straight championship against a michigan state team that hadn't been to pasadena since 1988. stanford upped its lead to 10- 0. later in the quarter, the spartans got on the board early in the 2nd. their quarterback made an ill- advised throw before halftime. conner makes the interception. the spartans went 75 yards in 1:30. cook, spots trayvon pendleton in the end zone. stanford in front, 17-14 at the half. the spartans tied it with a 3rd quarter field goal, and took the lead in the 4th.

cook to tony lipet. michigan state had its first lead at 24-17. stanford added a field goal. then the game came down to this. 4th and 1 from the 34. stanford fullback, ryan huet is stuffed for no gain. the spartans take over on downs. they're the ones who get to celebrate. winning the 100th version of the rose bowl. stanford finishes the season 11- 3. stanford was stopped on runs. he was asked if that he was the right call. >> i don't worry about any of that stuff. i'm going to put the ball in the hands of our guys. we're going to go for it on 4th down in that case. we'll put it on our defense to get the ball back. that's what they did. i think our coaches did a phenomenal job. we got beat today by a really good football team. >> lots more bowl coverage to come on this new year's night

a little bit of everything in today's capitol one bowl in orlando. steve spurrier's south carolina team, pulling out all the stops against wisconsin. throws back to the quarterback, shaw in the end zone. shaw was involved in five scores for the gamecocks who win 34-24. in the gator bowl, nebraska was clinging to a 5 point win over georgia. hauled in by quincy, here's a record that will never be broken. he completes the 99-yard touchdown play, one of two scoring passes he hauled in. the cornhuskers beat georgia. another nfl coaching vacancy is set to be filled. a report says lovie smith will take over the tampa bay bucs, and hire the recently fired leslie frazier as his defensive coordinator. it is a coaching carousel this time of year. thanks joe. >> thank you for choosing ktvu,
