>> reporter: we're live in san francisco where police may now have a better idea of who stabbed a man and killed him inside an apartment building. we'll tell you who they are looking at. >> reporter: more than three weeks after she was declared brain dead by doctors, jahi mcmath has left children's hospital oakland. where the girl is headed now. there are freezing temperatures this morning across most of the nation. how that bad weather is affecting bay area airports this morning. "mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." our top story -- a deadly stabbing in san francisco. these are live pictures from market street and octavia. you can see police tape and officers on the scene. ktvu was first on the scene at 4:30 this morning. we'll have another live report coming up. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve, a little different today? >> more high clouds today. that's for sure. mostly cloudy. should be a nice sunrise. temperatures way above average over the weekend. they will still be above today but will settle in to near average by tuesday and wednesday. we had the offshore push and

that sent temperatures up, up, up. a lot of record highs since january 1st. 30s, 40s to 50. everything continues to be in the middle of the country. windchill advisories go down to texas. for us, it will be cooler. as we look at temperatures in the mountains, teents, 20 in reno. a lot of cloud cover spilling in here this week. highs today, low to mid-60s. a few pushth the upper 60s. here's sal. we've had a little bit of trouble on the 580 commute in the livermore valley. not only 580. but also 84. 580 is slow but i might recommend that you stay on it, right through the dublin area. there's a problem on 580 near -- actually, it's on 84 near vinehill. this is a head-on crash. a lot of people use 84 as an alternate to 580 this morning. i would recommend staying on

580. this head-on collision near vinehill is going to be affecting a lot of the traffic on 84 heading on south. i would recommend staying on 580 and using 680. it will be a tough one. 680 is tough heading down out of sunol or pleasanton to su-- sunol. let's take a look at the hayward commute. southbound 880 is moderate. live pictures. i want to show you the traffic at the toll plaza is backed you for a 15-minute -- backed up for a 15-minute delay. more extensive last week but nothing major. 237, the old tried and true, it will be stop and go as you drive westbound towards the santa clara valley. let's go back to the desk. developing news in san francisco where a man was found stabbed to death just hours ago. police rushed to an apartment building at market street and octavia just before 3:30 this

morning. ktvu's tara moriarty says the police appear to be narrowing the search for a suspect. tara? >> reporter: well, a half-hour ago, officers wrapped under what's called a cold show in a nearby alley. that's where a witness will sit in a patrol car and a roid out suspects one by one -- parade out suspects one by one. we saw them bring out one latinawoman and two latino males and held up a red jersey to help identify. so the person responsible never left the building. there were a dozen patrol cars. police fielded off every exit. this unfolding before 3:30 this morning in an apartment building off market and okay tavgia streets. >> a 911 caller -- octavia streets. >> a 911 caller said there was a body in the lobby of the hallway and we responded and found a person stabbed to

death. >> reporter: the coroner has removed the body. we're not sure how many times he was stabbed but there's obviously a lot of blood in side. the victim is from san francisco. we're not sure if he lives here but the police are trying to get ahold of his family before they release his name. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, in oakland, several gas lines at an oakland duplex were ruptured a car smashed through a fence and hit the side of that building. this happened boulevard 1:00 a.m. near ney and ritchie streets in oakland. police evacuated the surrounding area. once the gas leak was capped off, people were allowed to go back home. police are telling us here at ktvu news the driver of that car fled the scene. pg&e should be on the scene this morning to repair those broken gas lines. 7:05. later today, we'll learn more about the major new development involving the oakland girl who was declared brain dead last month. jahi mcmath has been quietly

released from children's hospital in oakland. alex savidge joins us live now to tell us why there is so much secrecy about her new location. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning doing -- good morning to you. the family won't say where she is. but she will go to a long-term facility. in all likelihood, it's a place in new york that said it is willing to accept her. there's concerns about safety and security for jahi and other patients at the facility. that's why the family does not want to confirm the location of where she will be headed. it's been more than three weeks since she was declared brain dead. last night she left children's hospital here in oakland. she remained on a ventilator as she was taken from the hospital in a private ambulance before 8:00. this is video provided to us by jahi's family. you can see a caravan of cars leaving the hospital. she suffered cardiac arrest after a complication from a

tonsillectomy. because she was declared legally dead, children's hospital had to release jahi to the custody of the coroner's office and the coroner in turn gave the girl to her family. the family's attorney wouldn't talk specifically about where jahi was taken after leaving the hospital. but he says the teenager is having permanent breathing and feeding tubes inserted. they are needed to transport her to that long-term care center. doctors here would not perform those prosecutors on a person declared legally dead. >> jahi's fragile. while we're happy, she's out. she's not out of the woods in terms of her own health because right now, she's in transit. so we ask that people still keep her in her thoughts and prayers. >> reporter: jahi's family won't name the facility where she's going but one possible option is new beginnings community center in medford new york. that's where the director said

she's had discussions about the family moving there. they say they help patients recover from traumatic brain injuries. the director said she's looking forward to treating jahi. >> she can come through this. we need to -- she deserves and she needs to have the chance that all of us here at new beginnings have had. >> reporter: in a statement children's hospital oakland said "our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation and we wish them closure and peace." the attorney representing the jahi family said she will be ready for transport later on this morning with those permanent breathing and feeding tubes insert. but the family's attorney will not say when and how she will be transported to that long- term care facility. live this morning in oakland. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. this heartbreaking case began on deas 9th when jahi mcmath went into the hospital.

she suffered serious complications that lead to a heart attack. on december 12th she was declared brain dead. december 20th, there was a restraining order to keep her on the ventilator. your time is 7:08. firefighters in pinole telling people make sure your chimneys and wood stoves are inspected and cleaned this, this afternoon a smoke explosion severely damaged a house on pinole family road. the family saw smoke coming from an electrical outlet on the second floor. shortly after that, the explosion happened. it blew out the second-story windows, the back wall and damaged the roof. everyone inside the house escaped injuries. the fire was caused by a leaking pipe on the family's wood stove.

the cause of that smoke explosion is still under investigation. freezing weather is moving across much of the nation. temperatures are the coldest they've been in almost 20 years. by wednesday, 140 million people are expected to be shivering in zero-degree weather or even colder. today, nashville, tennessee and atlanta, georgia will be colder than anchorage, alaska. >> this jacket, the ski mask, hat, gloves. i'm still cold. >> the chicago transit authority is handing out fare cars to ride buses and trains to the homeless to stay warm. the town of embarrass, could set a new record. in 1966, the temperatures there hit 64 degrees below zero. the freezing weather means schools are closed in chicago,

7:15. the aspen, colorado airport remains closed after a plane crashed there that killed one person. it happened when the small plane was trying to land yesterday afternoon. according to the air traffic control report, the pilot was reporting high winds while coming into land. he circled and attempted to land three times before the crash happened. witnesses say the plane flipped over and burst into flames. >> they were able to put the flames out very quickly, quick enough so the fire did not make it inside the cabin. >> the plane's co pilot was killed. two other people were injured. the airport will stay closed while the ntsb investigates. a skiing accident has put

the leader of germany on the sidelines for the next few weeks. angela merkel suffered a pelvic injury while skiing in switzerland. the injury was pan incomplete bone fracture that will require her to rest for three weeks. it's unclear if anyone else was involved in thezying accident -- in the skiing accident. a republican senator from wisconsin says he will file a lawsuit today over the government policy that lets members of congress and their staffs get subsidies as part of the affordable care act. senator ron johnson will argue the policy forces him to comply with a rule el thinks is illegal -- he thinks is illegal. he also believes the policy hurts his relationship with constituents because it gives him and other congressional employees special treatment. today was supposed to be the deadline for people who signed up on california's health exchange to pay their first premium. now the deadline has been extended. covered california is extending the deadline to january 15th.

now, in the last two weeks of december, the volume of enrollment applications increased a lot for the exchange. and the insurance companies since it is taking longer for them to process the applications, the decision was made to extend the deadline the premiums have to be paid. 7:17. lawmakers in washington, d.c. get back to work today with some unfinished business, including whether to extend benefits for 1.3 million long- term unemployed americans. democrats want to extend the emergency unemployment benefits which expired december 28th. but republicans say they want to explore other options including new job training initiative. >> are you willing to work with republicans to find a way to offset the unemployment benefit? >> we've never offset emergency spending. foolishness. >> i've always said it needs to be paid for but we also need to do something for long-term unemployed people. we need to create something new

that would create scrobs. president obama back at the white house, has urged congress to pass the benefits extension. the senate will take a test vote on a measure that would provide a three-month extension of benefits but the real test is whether it can pass the house. >> that's right. let's check in with sal. you are watching highway 101. >> that's right. san francisco, southbound 101, cesar chavez, clearing a crash that was blocking one lane in san francisco. i want to go to the live picture and show you that southbound 101 is not doing well at all because of that crash. now the best way for you to get around it, the alternate route is to go down to 6th street and get on 280, 280 will take you past it. you can rejoin 101 at the 280 interchange. you will save yourself a lot of time by doing that or you can use propotrero avenue -- potrero avenue. you don't want to get on the

freeway south of market onle 0 that chance -- on 80. moving along and taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, that's a moderate delay. five to ten minutes, it's more than we had last week. things like -- it looks like we're easing into a monday. no major problems, southbound 880 now, as you can see from -- there's a little bit of slow traffic here right from 280 until about union city and then it gets a little bit better than that. it's not quite full strength but you will see slow traffic back to the desk. >> what? you forget me already. >> oh, steve! a lot of high clouds. not as nice as yesterday when we had a beautiful weekend. record high temperatures. should be a beautiful sunrise. a lot of high clouds associated with a dying system. won't do much. 30s 40s to 50 in san francisco.

temperatures yesterday on the coast, very, very warm. we had records in oakland, sfo, 68 el granada, half moon bay. it's amazingly cold. these are the current temperatures. chicago is 15 below. twitter has been great of sending pictures. we have warnings and watches in 34 states. the windchill also will be the big factor from the great lakes to the deep south and ohio valley. minnesota, 50, 55 below on their windshield. some of the rain is falling over the very heavy snow they had last week in boston. that caused us fog issues but the arctic front has -- you can see where it is, some of that rain is turning to snow on the back side, pennsylvania into west virginia. this is where the cold air is plunging in. 17 for tahoe. 20 in reno. i know it's still cold in other parts of the country, not that

cold. weekend systems will move in which will allow temperatures for us to come down. they've been so far above, it would take sense we'll get near average, upper 50s, lower 60s. a lot of high clouds. hazy skies. a stronger system comes in thursday. but i don't think it will do anything here. it looks like a cooler week. 60s, low, mid, upper for everybody. alameda is in there. brentwood is in there at 62. a little warmer, santa clara valley. a few less high clouds there. more to the north bay. 60s, low 60s. there is a puff of an easterly breeze for some. a few locations. brandon said it was a breezy day. mostly sunny to partly cloudy. thursday does look cooler to cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. not much change. just near average temperatures. 7:22. a big announcement from stanford. the grant the university is getting that could help change cancer therapy. how the bitter cold weather helped reunite a missing man

pope francis has made another gesture to catholics who may have lost the faith. ♪ >> earlier today, the pope told them god is waiting for them and he hopes they will come back to the roman catholic church. pope francis said that during a mass in vatican city celebrating a catholic feast day. in the meantime, the vatican announced pope francis will go to the middle east this spring. he will deliver a message of peace and cooperation in that troubled part of the world. the pope will visit jordan and israel during a three-day trip in may. he plans to meet with both palestinian and israeli leaders. dennis rodman is on his way to north korea for an exhibition game. rodman was -- has rounded up a squad of a dozen former nba players including baker,

anderson, robinson and charles smith. he says he wants to show the world that north korea is not a bad place. >> i'm not a president. i'm not a politician. i'm not an ambassador. i'm an athlete, individual who wants to go over there. >> the u.s. players will compete against the north korean team on wednesday as part of a celebration for kim jung un's birthday. the bitter east cold weather has helped parents back east find their missing on. 20 -- son. 20-year-old nicholas simmons vanished from the home on new year's day. his disappearance caused a lot of concern. he left behind his cell phone and wallet. on saturday, an a.p. photographer looking for away to illustrate the weather took this photo of him in a freezing washington, d.c. area. that lead to a reunion between

40s, 50s, 60s on the temperature. warmer on the coast, the city. you get the offshore push a little bit. 30s for the interior. sacramento, ukiah, lake county. for us, a lot of high clouds and that's it. highs today, low to mid-60s. more mid-60s than the upper os and low -- 60s and low 70s. here's sal. last week we had good commutes people were off. i think a lot of people are off. we have slow traffic all over the place. southbound 101 has recovered after an earlier crash at cesar chavez. it's been cleared. feel free to take 101 again. it's better than it was just a little bit slow. but i couldn't refrain from taking it at this point to get out of the city and head down the peninsula. also the morning commute looks pretty good if you are at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's about a 10, 15-minute delay. it's not full strength. but definitely more than it was last week. 580 has been slow all the way through livermore into dublin. 680 coming out of pleasanton. it does finally get better by

the time you reach the livermore valley. we had an earlier accident near vineyard. that's in the clearing stages. we also have traffic on 880 southbound as you drive to hayward. a little bit slow. some drive times. nine minutes from -- on 24 from pleasant hill road to the tunnel and on 880, 238 to fremont, about 19 minutes' drive time. 7:31 -- 7:32. let's go back to the desk. >> all right. thank you, sal. continuing coverage of the arctic temperatures affecting much of the country. weather like this in the northern midwest is causing some problems at home. travelers dealt with flight delays all weekend long and that continues, in fact, today. ktvu's janine de la vega is live at mineta san jose airport with a look at the conditions right now. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. well, there's been cancellations at all three airports, including here at san jose.

now, a flight to chicago where there's snow and ice, there's cancellations on american airlines. there are a lot of frustrated passengers inside. look at this line of passengers to chicago. they are all waiting hoping to rebook their flight. this same scenario is playing out at sfo where more flights have been canceled. more than 40. on flightaware.com, there's been 3100 flights that have been canceled today in the u.s. now the problems all started when the storm hit back east last thursday and friday and over the weekend, there was snow in the midwest, that worsened the conditions. passengers have been trying to rebook flights. those who are trying to fly out of san jose who had their flights canceled today are not happy. >> tired of standing here. they want to see their dad. they are really unhappy. >> reporter: did you anticipate

this? >> no, i didn't even know. i just got -- here -- i just got here and i saw this big line. we have to wait. >> reporter: the hardest-hit airports are chicago, cleveland, la guardia, j.f.k. and boston. cancellations and delays vary by airline. passengers report they are having a diflt time trying -- difficult time trying to get ahold of the airlines because it's been so busy. i want to go to the latest numbers. sfo is reporting 41 cancellations today. that's departing and arriving flights. san jose has eight and oakland has six cancellations. and back out here live, there's sort of a lull in traffic. it was a little busier earlier. but we did notice, there was some people loading their suitcases back into taxi cakes. those people on the chicago flight, we spoke to a couple and they couldn't rebook their flight today. they will have to spend another

night in san jose. we're suspecting that's the case with a lot of the passengers still waiting in line inside. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:34. new this morning, a stolen car was recovered after a short police chase in la fayette. police tried to pull the car over for speeding on eastbound highway 24 near the orinda exit. this was about 3:00 this morning. the driver then led police on a short chase to the mt. diablo boulevard exit before crashing into a light pole. the driver was taken into custody. two other people inside that car got away. 7:35. we're learning more this morning about the bomb scare that diverted a plane that left sfo bound for new york. these are exclusive pictures sent to us by a passenger from inside a secure waiting area at the kansas city airport. that's where american airlines flight 24 was diverted to yesterday after someone found what looked like a flash drive taped to the wall of one of the

yesterday. the -- game yesterday. san francisco came away with the win. talk about fan reaction. man, are they excited and exhausted as the 49ers squeak out a win at the frozen tundra of lambeau field as they like to say. they call it frozen for a reason. fans, many of them from the bay area actually went out there to go see the game live at lambeau field, temperatures were well below zero yesterday during the game. many 49ers fans got great deals to hotels. ticket packages as well as they are trying to get fans to the games. it wasn't even a sellout until late friday afternoon. many were excited after the game. we spoke to some here at the pub. they were excited to see the 49ers move on into the playoffs. we spoke to murph and mac. here's their take on yesterday's game and what's ahead as they face carolina next week. >> we won't see jim hare bra with 50 layers or colin

warehouse. >> get out. >> this video is expected to help in that investigation. the fire started yesterday morning near embarcadero and oak street. ktvu news spoke to a man who captured the flames on this cell phone moments -- on his cell phone moments after the fire started. >> i was documenting it and i heard a noise. i heard somebody talking. and when i looked over i noticed the flames. >> there's still no official word on the cause of the fire. but investigators say homeless people have been sleeping inside that abandoned warehouse. 7:39. a 5-year parcel tax will be debated today at a supervisors' meeting today in east contra costa county. the fire district needs funding to keep five fire stations open. they will recommend a vam id measure for a tax that starting at $98 a year and grows 3% every year. that meeting by the way begins

at 6:30 this evening in oakland. 16 members of a marin county strike team are in humboldt county fighting a major fire. this one is burning 40 miles east. it's burned 350 acres. it's 40% contained. the strike team leader say it's rare to be fighting a wildfire this time of the year. but again, it's also the driest year we've seen in decades. 7:40. today, hundreds are expected to pay their final respects to a popular northern california catholic priest. a funeral is set to take place later this morning aing at the sacred heart church in eureka. yesterday dozens gathered in honor of father eric freed. his body was discovered in the rectory new year's day. 43-year-old gary lee bullock was arrested in connection with the father's death. police are now trying to figure out a motive.

tomorrow, san francisco supervisors will honor an 84- year-old activist hit by a car fatally last month in chinatown. the death of isabel on jackson street, it's renewing safety concerns about the streets of chinatown. the recent city report found that chinatown has the highest  rate of pedestrian injuries in san francisco. coming up on 7:41. a bay area man feels betrayed by his favorite store after his credit card information was stolen. jessie diaz says his best buy credit card was declined when he recently tried to use it. charges totaling $1500, though, showed up on his bill for items he did not buy. he says he complained to the store's general manager and was told he is not the only victim. >> he informed me that i was not the only case. he says, there's several other cases. >> he says the manager told him a store employee stole personal

hold in utah. same-sex couples started getting married in utah at the end of last month after a federal judge ruled that the ban violated the right to equal protection under the constitution. the state attorney general wanted the marriages stopped while the state appeals that ruling but again, the u.s. supreme court is putting these same-sex marriages in utah on hold for now. we'll have more details as they are available. 7:47. cracking down on the commute to silicon valley. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom now, telling us about the fight, pam, over those google buses. >> that's right. ktvu has learned that san francisco mayor ed lee will announce a pilot program today to address the problems surrounding private shuttle buses at public bus stops. now, google, yahoo!, genentic, many other silicon valley companies have private shuttles to take employees to work. you are looking at a protest over those buses. people who drive on the freeways appreciate that there are fewer cars on the road but

people sliferping in san francisco, especially in the mission district area, are not happy about those buses. this is a protest from last month. the protesters say that the shuttle buses not only disrupt regular public bus service by using those muni bus stops but they are not paying as well. ktvu news has learned that a new pilot program will be announced today by mayor ed lee. that will require the shuttle operators to pay to use the muni bus stops and it may also include restricted hours to drop off and pick up the passengers. i just spoke to someone who lives in the neighborhood where the shuttle buses pick up and drop off passengerses. she says cars that stop to pick someone up can be fined $271. we'll try to get comments next hour. if you want to weigh in, send me a note on facebook or twitter. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. the mystery of an unusual crop circle that appeared in

investigation. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. yes, this building was on lockdown pretty much all morning. just after 7:00 residents were allowed out. many said they were late for work. it's because officers wouldn't let anyone leave. they sealed off every exit and fire escape. behind me is the lobby where the body of the person stabbed was found. the large police presence here happened all morning long on the -- at the apartment building on market and octavia. the 911 call coming in just before 3:30. investigators then conducted a cold show same peculiar to a lineup but in the street -- similar to a lineup but in the street. officers paraded a string of spbing. we saw a latina woman and two latino women. police showed a red jersey to a witness sitting in a parked police car. >> to see if the person looked familiar to anybody that obviously they had some information. that's why we're doing it.

oakland girl declared brain dead. she's been quietly released from children's hospital in oakland. ktvu's alex savidge joining us live with reaction from the head of the medical facility in new york that's stepped forward to help. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning to you. at this point, jahi's family won't say exactly where she is or exactly where she's going. they say that's for safety reasons. we know the family is intending to send her to a long-term care facility. in all likelihood, it's a facility in new york that said it is ready and willing to accept jahi. three weeks ago, she was declared brain dead by doctors. last night just before 8:00 she was taken away from children's hospital in a private ambulance. the girl remained on a ventilator. this is video provided by jahi's family, you can see a caravan of cars. because she was legally declared dead, they had to release her to the custody of the coroner's office and the

coroner gave the girl to the family. they would not talk about where she was taken after she left the hospital. but the director of the new beginning center in bedford, new york says her facility is ready to care for jahi. >> the team that i've been working with, you know, we put an affidavit into the court saying that i was willing to help jahi in any way we could. so she got the extra eight days and we're so happy to see she will have a chance now. >> reporter: jahi suffered cardiac arrest following complications from tonsil surgery performed on december 9th to cure her sleep apnea. jahi's family won't name the facility she's going to. sheas for the security and -- that's for the security and privacy and safety of patients there. the teenager is having permanent breathing and ed fooing tubes inserted. they -- and feeding tubes inserted. they are needed to transport her. doctors here at children's

complications. on december 12th, she was declared brain tead. on december 20th, a judge issued a restraining order to keep children's hospital from taking jahi off the ventilator. on december 30th, the order was extended until january 7th, tomorrow, to give the time family to move jahi. last night, jahi mcmath was qi ruttily released -- quietly released to her mother. several gas lines at a duplex in oakland were severed after a car drove through a fence and into the side of a building. it happened before 1:00 a.m. near ney and ritchie streets in oakland. police evacuated the surrounding area. once the gas leak was capped people were allowed to return to their homes. officers tell us here at ktvu news that the driver fled the scene. pg&e is expected in the area this morning to repair the broken lines. firefighters in pinole want people to clean and inspect their chimneys and wood stoves after a fire and smoke

explosion severely damaged a home. last night, fire crews were called to this home on pin nome valley road after the family saw smoke -- pinole valley road after the family saw smoke. shortly after that an explosion blew out the secondf story window, the black wall and dankged the roof. everyone inside escaped harm. the fire was caused by a leaking pipe on a wood stove. the cause of the explosion is still under investigation. 8:09. police in petaluma still searching for the person who stabbed a man in a denny's parking lot yesterday morning. it happened at the denny's on petaluma boulevard north. police say a man was -- was stabbed after another man came up to the parked arcar -- parked car and starting yelling at him. freezing weather is moving across the nation. temperatures are the coldest they've been in almost 20 years. by wednesday 140 million people are expected to be shivering in

welcome back. 8:14. baseball fans all over the country mourning the death of a hall of fame sports broadcaster who was also a bay area native and a war hero. 89-year-old jerry coleman died after a brief illness. he was born in san jose. he grew up in san francisco. he was once a second baseman for the new york yankees but he interrupted his pro career to fly as a u.s. pilot in both world war ii and korea. coleman later spent more than four dick aids as a broadcaster -- decades as a broadcaster for the san diego padres. 8:15. the aspen, colorado airport remains closed after a plane crashed there killed one person. it happened when the small plane was trying to land yesterday afternoon. according to the air traffic control recording, the pilot was reporting high winds while

coming in toland. he circled and attempted to land three times before the crash happened. witnesses say the plane flipped over and burst into flames. they were able to put the flames out very quickly. quick enough so the fire did not make it inside the cabin. >> the plane's copilot was killed. twor other people on board were injured. the airport will remain closed while the ntsb investigates. a skiing accident has put germany on the sidelines -- has put the chancellor of germany on the sidelines. angela merkel suffered an injury. the injury was an incomplete broen fracture. she will -- bone fracture. she will need to rest for three weeks. not clear if anyone else was involved in the skiing accident. a republican senator from wisconsin says he will file a lawsuit today over the government policy that lets members of congress and their staff get subsidies as part of the affordable care act.

senator ron johnson will argue that the policy forces him to comply with a rule he believes is illegal. he also believes the policy harms his relationship with constituents because it gives him and the other congressional employees special treatment. well, today was supposed to be the deadline for people who signed up on california's health exchange to pay their first premium. now the deadline has been extended. covered california is extending the deadline to january 15th. in the last two weeks of december, the volume of enrollment applications increased substantially for the exchange and the insurance companies. since it is taking longer for them to process the application, the decision was made to extend the deadline to pay the premium. 8:17. sal you are watching san francisco still, right? >> we're watching that, dave and tori. good morning to you. we're seeing traffic conditions improve in san francisco and the drive to it.

right now, an arctic blast is blasting parts of the nation, dropping temperatures below freezing in a lot of areas and causing thousands of flight cancellations and delays. janine de la vega is at mineta san jose airport and some passengers are dealing with problems out there. >> reporter: yeah, dave. there is a lot of passengers inside who are frustrated because they had their flight to chicago, o'hare canceled. that airport has been hit hard more than 1500 flights in and out of o'hare have been canceled. that's affecting a lot of travelers here in the bay area. inside terminal a, the san jose airport, there is a long line of those passengers waiting, hoping to rebook their flights. passengers are telling us that a flight isn't available until tomorrow at sfo, the weather in the midwest is also affecting flights. more than 40 have been canceled. one woman we spoke to told us this is the second time her son's flight got canceled.

>> yesterday, we were in san francisco and he was there for an hour and they canceled the flight. told him to come here to get this flight this morning and he -- and it to the canceled again. now we don't know. >> reporter: on flightaware.com, a website that tracks delays and cancellations, there's been more than 3200 flights that have been canceled today in the u.s. now the problems started when the storm hit back east last thursday and friday and then over the weekend, snow in the midwest, worsened all of the conditions. the hardest hit airports are chicago, cleveland, la guardia, j.f.k. and boston. and that has some travelers in the bay area out of luck until tomorrow. >> tray to go back to miami. we go through -- try to go back to miami. try to go through chicago, the plane is canceled. and we will rebook tomorrow to go to dallas to miami instead. >> reporter: and here's the

latest numbers for bay area airports. sfo is reporting 46 cancellations today. san jose has 8 and oakland has 8. so again, you heard the worse is in san francisco. but nothing compared to the problems that they are facing back in the midwest and on the east coast. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:33. we now know more about yesterday's bomb scare that caused a plane to be diverted after leaving sfo bound for new york. here's exclusive pictures sent to us. it came from a passenger from inside a secure waiting area at the kansas city airport. that's where american airlines flight 24 was diverted to yesterday. someone found what looked like a flash drive taped to the walls of one of the bathrooms. we're hearing that device was really a small camera disguised to look like a flash drive. that case is under investigation.

they are dealing with temperatures well below freezing. the cold weather causing thousands of flight delays around the country including here in the bay area. sfo is reporting 46 canceled flights. oakland and san jose airports both have -- have 8. we're fogging a major new development involving the 13-year-old oakland girl declared brain dead last month. jahi mcmath has quietly been released from children's hospital in oakland. alex savidge joining us live now getting us reaction from the head of a medical facility in new york that's stepped forward to help out. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, the family is ultimately planning to move jahi to a long-term care facility. in all likelihood, it's a place in new york that has said it's willing to accept jahi. doctors declared her brain dead more than three weeks ago. she's remained on a ventilator ever since that time. last night just before 8:00 she was taken from children's

hospital here in oakland by private ambulance. this is video provided to us by jahi's family. you can see a caravan of cars leaving the hospital. because she was legally declared dead, children's hospital had to release jahi to the custody of the coroner's office and the coroner gave the girl to her family. the family's attorney wouldn't talk specifically about where jahi was taken after leaving. who. but the director of the new beginnings center in bedford, new york, says her facility is ready to care for jahi. it's a facility that treats children with traumatic brain injuries and the director says these understands what jahi's family is going through. >> basically he was on full life support and he was in a coma. at one point they talked about taking him off. he would have no quality of life and we believed that he was in there and he did come out of his coma. but it takes time. >> reporter: jahi suffered cardiac arrest following

consill surgery to cure -- consill surgery to cure sleep apnea. they won't name the facility she's going to. the teenager is now having permanent breathing and feeding tubes inserted. those are necessary to take her to a long-term care center and doctors here at children's hospital wouldn't perform that surgery on someone who is legally dead. jahi's uncle says moving the girl out of the hospital is a huge step. >> we're very grateful, very proud, we want to thank everyone that supported us. everyone that stood in our corner. everyone that prayed for us. everyone that helped donate to help make this possible. >> reporter: in a statement, children's hospital oakland said "our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation and we wish them closure and peace." even though a number of doctors here declared jahi brain dead, her family believes once she's at a long-term care center, she

can make a full recovery. live this morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:47. at this hour, a man ploo pleaded guilty to slapping a toddler who was crying is due in court. joe hundley pleaded guilty in october after reaching a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. he now faces a year in jail and $100,000 fine for the incident that happened a year ago. and prosecutors say hundley used a racial slur to refer to the 19-month-old boy who is african-american. they say hundley hit the child in the eye during a flight from minneapolis to atlanta. 8:48. they have to pay or they have to go. that's a very emotional message people are sending san francisco's mayor over corporate shuttle buses. pam cook is in the newsroom with more on the flight over the -- fight over the commute in the silicon valley. >> ktvu has learned that ed lee

will announce a pilot program today to address the problems surrounding private shuttle buses using public bus stops. now, google, yahoo!, genentic and other companies have private shuttles to take employees from where they live in san francisco to where they work in silicon valley. people who drive on the freeways, appreciate there are fewer cars on the road. people living in san francisco, especially in the mission district and the marina, they are not happy about the buses. they say the shuttle buses disrupt regular public service by using muni stops and they also point out that drivers of regular passenger cars can be fined $271 for stopping at a bus stop but the shuttles are using them for free. now, on my facebook page, i just heard from one person who lives in the maria. she says she would like to see improvements in the relationship between the shuttle operators in the city. she would like them to work together ba -- but she states in addition to the muni stop, some of the shuttles often

the investigation continues into the cause of a deadly high rise fire in new york city. one person was killed. several others injured. midtown manhattan yesterday morning. several firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation after battling the flames. investigators will be on the scene all day -- all day trying to determine the cause. andrew cuomo will announce this week that medical marijuana is coming to new york state. but several major restrictions will be included.

only 20 new york hospitals would have medical marijuana throughout the state. and it would be only for very ill patients. lawmakers in washington, d.c. get back to work today with some unfinished business. the senate is set to vote today on president obama's pick to head the federal reserve. 67-year-old janet yellen is currently the vis chair. she was president of the san francisco federal reserve bank from 2004 to 2010. yellen will be the first woman to chair the bank. she's set to replace ben bernanke at the end of the month. 8:56. the tv ratings are in now and you watched the 49ers yesterday, yesterday's playoff game in green bay had the highest rating in history for an nfc wild card game. that's according to dan bell. he's the vice president of communications for fox sports. the 49ers/packsers showdown --
