a 21-year-old was found stabbed to death about 3:30 a.m. this morning in the lobby of an apartment building on market street. officers locked down the building and conducted a cold show. they walked possible suspects past a witness who was sitting inside a patrol car. >> to see if the person looked familiar to anybody. they had information that is why we were doing it. >> police say they have not made any arrests in the case as yet. four of the biggest cities followed a nationwide trend with fewer homicides in 2013. 48 people were killed in san francisco last year, down from 69. the biggest drop was oakland, from 131 to 92. san jose 46 down a 44. and richmond 16 people were killed last year compared to

18. man suspected of being the cotton ball bandit has been charged with 10 bankruptcies. police believe the 60-year-old is the man shown in this surveillance video from one of the robberies. investigators called him the cotton ball bandit because he wore a beanie. a sheriff's deputy shot and wounded him on december 11. that came after a robby. he did not enter a plea today. a san jose state university student plead not guilty to hate crime and battery charges for charges for tormenting his roommate who was black. they allege he and three others made racial slurs and tormented a victim. they claim the victim was injured when they locked a lock around his neck.

authorities in los angeles are warning residents about a mountain lion seen in this surveillance video taken by a homeowner. it is believed the mountain lion is linked to attacks on dogs. experts think it is looking for food and water because of the lack of rain. someone spotted a mountain lion in another neighborhood. officials say it was scene near willow brook lane at 9:30 p.m. last night. anyone who comes in contact with a mountain lion is advised not to run, appear as large as possible, make noise and throw things at it. >> reporter: drought concerns have people under voluntary
