just like a bomb went off in there. >> an explosion lifts the roof right off on a bay area home. fire investigators say they know what caused it and it's something they haven't seen in years. good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. a very close call for a woman and his wife. they say they barely escaped an explosion that blew out the walls and ceilings of their home. and heather holmes has the story. >> reporter: frank, with no

spare the air alert, bob alvarado decided to put a couple of logs on the fireplace. soon after an explosion so powerful it lifted the roof of the house. >> it was like a bomb went off in there. >> reporter: in a moment he saw the home he built go from beautiful to blackened. he saw billowing in an electrical outlet. >> that's when i put my hand on the wall and the wall was hot. so i screamed to them get out. >> reporter: when they got to the driveway, boom. >> lifted the roof off the house. it blew out the back wall about two feet. and blew all the sheet rock off the ceiling to the floor. >> this is exactly what happens. this is a back draft. >> like the sequel back draft, a hazardous condition that played out in real life. >> reporter: it doesn't happen

that often but you can tell by the devastation to the wall and all the material that was blown out to the yard. this is an extremely dangerous situation. >> geez, look at all the glass. >> reporter: the investigation is centered around the fireplace. including this discolored flute. >> this is not the most important thing. there's more important things. >> reporter: grateful for the support he's receiving. >> i'm staying with that neighbor. that one is a good neighbor. unlike the movie back draft, firefighters never made it into the house frank and julie. they were about to make entry when this explosion happened. now alvarado tells me he just had the chimney inspected and everything was okay.

but according to this incident, officials are urging everyone to do the same thing. a clerk at a neighborhood market was one of the two people wounded when someone opened fire outside the store. it happened just after 8:00 at the royal food supermarket on mcarthur boulevard on 76th avenue. a man outside the store was also wounded. the extent of his injuries still aren't known. a worker at the market says bullets came through a window and gate striking the clerk. he is expected to survive. according to a worker we spoke with, several bullets were sent into their store. a call for help tonight as they look for a man who grabbed the young woman and dragged her to the ground before she managed to escape. the woman told police she would attack on 17th street near jackson street on new year's night. police say a man wrapped his hands around the woman, and

began dragging her into the sidewalk. that's when she was able to run away. the man is described as african american in his early or mid- 20s to early 30s about 5'7" or 5'8". he apparently had a strong odor of cigarettes. new developments in the kidnapping case of a 7-year-old girl in antioch. the suspect admitted to kidnapping the girl but told a reporter that the crime was a cry for help. according to the contra costa times, david douglas said it's something i did as a cry out, as a situation i'm in right now that i can't get out of. douglas says he did not molest the girl and he tried to calm her. according to the paper he said quote, i tried to think of something to tell her so i said, i'm an angel sent by god to get her. douglas said he did not have a gun with him as police have said. but rather a stick. he said he went to the antioch marina where he was captured because he's homeless and that's where he's been

sleeping. those who know douglas say they are stunned by what happened. >> i think he must have took something and lost his mind temporarily. because that's not him. i've talked to him. he's a nice guy. he's a father. >> reporter: as for the 7-year- old girl she is doing well tonight according to her mother. and now police are praising a target employee for helping bring the ordeal to a swift end. debora villalon is live in pittsburgh where he spoke to the woman and got her story. >> reporter: the suspect spent a lot of time at this target parking lot and walking in the store not realizing he was being watched. roxanna ramirez spend her day spotting shoplifters. as a loss prevention specialists at target. that's when she started following a man with a backpack behaving oddly in the men's

department. >> he was acting really weird. abnormal. just didn't make me feel comfortable. >> reporter: she had no inkling that later he would become a suspect. roxanna just knew she needed to keep an eye on him. watching him on camera as he went out into his car. >> at one point i seen him grab his steering wheel and start to shake him. so that was really odd to me. that's when i knew something was wrong with him. >> reporter: she wrote his license plate number in the book she scaried. and she didn't think of it again until her friend told her, the car the suspect was driving. >> i said hold on, that matches the description of someone i saw at my job earlier. >> reporter: in short order he and his young victim were found parked. >> we applaud people like

there's precious little of it right now. this is kimball reservoir the only reservoir in town. normally by now all this would be full of water. that would be covered by 65 feet of water now there's barely 15 feet there. to give you an idea of low the water table is if i stood here a year ago i would be under water right now, the level came up to here. >> there's a white line. that's where we like to see it. >> reporter: michael kern is calastoga water director. >> what does that look to you when you see that. >> it looks like an empty hole. >> reporter: that empty hole he says is supposed to supply half of the town's water supply. but the situation in calistoga is not dire at least not yet. calistoga is one of many towns connected to the state's water project which still has enough supply to get through this year. but another dry year after that could be bigger trouble. >> that would be a problem because if it's not raining here, it's not raining any where else in the state. and the state's water

a driver in the east bay lost control of her car while sheriff deputies were chasing her this afternoon. deputies say they first noticed the car about 3:00 p.m. but it had no license plate. they say when they tried to pull the driver over she took off. and ended up crashing. sheriff deputies say it turns out the driver is a parolee with outstanding warrants. private shuttle buses using public numi bus stops the practice has drawn angry protest. but today san francisco mayor ed lee proposed a solution. ktvu's jana katsuyama is live now in the city with why critics say the plan still doesn't address the problem. jana. >> reporter: this proposal would require the private commuter shuttle to pay one dollars any time they use any

of these public nummi bus stops but some say it doesn't go far enough. every day shuttle buses take commuters to work. the shuttles are a perk that commuters say benefit everyone in the city. >> i mean it keeps me from having to drive. it allows me to work where i work and it keeps san francisco from being overrun by an enormous volume of cars. >> reporter: but last month protesters blocked a google shuttle bus. critics say highly paid tech workers are getting a free ride by free loading off public transit causing delays for muni drivers. and in cases, those same type workers are displacing working families by driving up rent. >> what we're going to see is displacement. what we're going to see is people that have lived in their homes for 30 some odd years have to leave. >> reporter: today sfm ta is

proposing a pilot program. partnered with google and genentech running shuttle buses. this plan would allow the shuttle buses to access 200 of those stops. that would bring in about $1.6 million during the 18 month pilot. shuttles would be required to yield to muni buses and avoid steep and narrow streets. the issue of affordable housing, supervisor scott weiner says it is a problem but tech workers are not to blame. >> we need to work really hard to address our housing prices. tech workers did not cause our housing crisis. >> reporter: the mta board is expected to meet on january 1st to consider this proposal and if it passes they're expected to propose a new plan for the spring. about 1,000 customers are without water after a break in

an 8-inch main. the break was reported about 5:30 this evening off monterey boulevard at industry. a spokesperson for the public utility's department say the pipes date back to 1929 and are vulnerable to breaks at this time of year. when water gets very cold. crews are working to restore the water service but no estimate at this point. police at san francisco are looking for suspects in the deadly stabbing of a 21-year- old man. police say jose manuel was found at about 3:30 this morning in the lobby of an apartment building on market street near haite. this is the first homicide of the year in san francisco. the fbi says the daily city man has admitted to setting fire to the chinese consulate in san francisco. as ktvu's david stevenson reports, investigators say the suspect claimed he was hearing voices. >> reporter: the fbi today said

39-year-old jo sen of daily city was the figure seenlighting seenlight -- seen lighting a fire in the consulate forces. he set fire to the consulate because all the voices he was hearing were in chinese. and the consulate must have been involved. federal investigators say they chose -- they saw a man approach. the criminal complaint says he then called 911 on january 3rd and told daily city police through a mandarin translator that he made the fire at the consulate. >> he called the department advised them of what had occurred. and they of course responded very quickly and came in. >> for myself i'm not very

forest fire. >> reporter: other camps didn't fare as well in the rim fire. the berkeley family camp was destroyed and camp towanga had significant damage. as for camp mather this is its 90th season. clouds streaming in off the pacific. if we had a good jet stream over us we would be getting a lot of rain. that's why we're continuing in this dry pattern with above average temperatures. so watch the cloud cover. current numbers outside 42 in santa rosa. 48 in concord and 53 in hayward. as we head into tomorrow. we have a lot of clouds again. temperatures are going to come down just a couple of degrees. look for numbers tomorrow to be mostly in the upper 50s and low 60s. these are highs from today. highs tomorrow are coming down. concord got to 59. 69 in napa. slightly cooler tomorrow. plenty of clouds. as that system as clouds begin to move in. there's a system. there is a chance for sprinkles

elsa casillas posts a new picture. >> when he was like that, not even two months or something. >> reporter: from infancy to childhood. >> he's a very good all star goalie. >> reporter: she's memorializing her son's life. hosting what she calls a vigil. she hopes the vigil will humanize her son showing people this was somebody's child not just a victim. alberto casillas and a friend were driving home from a nightclub. someone shot and killed him and drove off. >> i need the person that did this to be responsible and do his time and be put away. >> reporter: police think the suspect may have gotten into an argument with casillas and followed him here to this intersection where he was shot

and killed. witnesses helped investigators create these sketches of the suspects. there's also a reward for information leading to an arrest. but seven years later all leads in the case have dried up. >> we're hoping that someone in the public who might know something about this homicide, witnessed something, heard something to please contact san francisco police department. >> reporter: police say generating publicity on social media could help the investigation but for now it's a way for a grieving mom to feel a little less helpless and more hopeful about an arrest. >> sometimes you know, i get very disappointed and that it's taken so long. i just keep the hope and the faith that some day it will come. >> reporter: in san francisco, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. very disappointing that was the reaction from a newlywed gay man after learning that the u.s. supreme court today blocked same-sex marriage in utah. the high court ruled same-sex marriages cannot continue while the state appeals a lower court

we knew it had a lot of local interests but it turns out the 49ers game against green bay yesterday afternoon was the most watched wild card game in nhl history. 47million people watched the niners beat packers as time ran out. the game seen right here on ktvu channel 2 was also the second most watched event on bay area television in the past year. only the super bowl also featuring the giants had a larger audience. the dream of one more game at the stick is now just two steps away from reality. ken wayne has the story. >> reporter: there is a scenario where the 49ers could play one more on core performance here at the stick.

misrepresenting the initiative's true purpose. a grim tradition is under way in san jose. our lady of guadalupe children at san antonio street has erected a cross for the first homicide victim of the year. church officials say they plan to put up one cross for every homicide in san jose this year. last year san jose saw 44 homicides. the man suspected of killing a priest in eureka was arraigned today for murder with a special allegation of torture. gary lee bullock pled not guilty and bail was set at $1.2 million. he's also charged with burglary, arson and auto theft. an autopsy shows that reverend aaron freed was beaten to death with a metal stake and wooden pipe. the suspect had just been released from jail a few hours earlier. state assemblyman mark

levine is offering to pay for the rebuilding of a memorial for andy lopez. investigators say it was started by candles. lopez is the 13-year-old boy who was shot and killed by a sheriff deputy. investigators say lopez was carrying a replica gun which looked like a real assault weapon. 13-year-old jahi mcmath is being cared for at an undisclosed location after being released from oakland children's hospital. her family still believes she can recover. john fowler tonight on the potential legal fall out from this case. >> reporter: the news crews are now gone from oakland children's hospital and so is

jahi mcmath. a so called evacuation team showed up with an ambulance just before 8:00 p.m. last night. >> i gave jahi a kiss on the forehead and told her i loved her and i'll see you soon. >> reporter: the family contacted five different facilities finally one agreed to accept jahi they won't say where. >> people who made this happen. they were a catholic organization that believes in the right to life. >> reporter: three doctors agreed jahi is dead. the family went to court and lost. though the judge did order her body remain on a ventilator. that samely gave the family more time -- that simply gave the family more time and sets

no precedence says david faigman. a legal expert. sanford university has received $90 million for a cancer study. sanford is one of the six institutions sharing half a million dollars from a fund to study cancer stem cells. the goal is to figure out if hidden cancer stem cells are the reason some cancers keep coming back even after treatment. if so the implications for cancer therapy could be enormous. her family says she killed herself after being sexually assaulted by three teenage boys. how one of the accused teens is trying to fight a wrongful death lawsuit. the specifics on a chance of light showers in the extended forecast. and a police officer recovering after a serious motorcycle accident. the controversial policy that has him returning to work with a pay cut. >> do they even care?

now to our continuing coverage of extreme weather. a system called a polar vortex is creating some of the coldest creations in years. even people that are used to frigid conditions say this is some of the coldest weather they've ever experienced. in minneapolis temperatures fell to 15 below zero. record lows also were experienced in texas. >> i spent a lot of time driving 15 to 20 miles per hour over the last couple of day, so pretty tough. >> reporter: over the last week there's been 14 weather related deaths. tonight the arctic blast is moving east where it's expected to bring more record low temperatures. more details, the extreme weather has stranded hundreds

of air travelers. noelle walker is one of them. she sent us this picture from chicago o'hare airport. it shows a very crowded the rebooking line. noelle has been trying to make her way back since yesterday. according to the website flight aware, we checked bay area airports, sfo had at least 57 flights flights cancelled. delays of any where between 30 minutes to three hours. oakland international had 15 cancellations and it had several flights delayed up to an hour and a half. a no plea today. he is facing battery and hate crime charges for allegedly torments an african american dorm mate. along with three other white freshman, allegedly he made

racial slurs. the alleged abuse included forcing a u shaped bike lot around the victim's neck. a new twist tonight in the case of saratoga teenager audrey pot. she committed suicide after police say she was sexually assaulted by three teenage boys at a party. now one of those teenage's fathers have sued. an attorney for the pot family says the legal maneuver demonstrates the extent to which this defendant has been coddled by his parents who refuse to hold him responsible for his actions. pot was just 15 years old when she died. the attitudes of americans about legalizing marijuana have made a major turn around at a new cnn poll. the poll finds 54% of americans now say marijuana should be legal. 44% disagree. but many still have

a san jose police officer who was injured on the job is facing a long recovery and a pay cut. the city says it has no choice but to reduce his pay. as ktvu's anne rubin shows us the officer is now fighting back. >> reporter: this was the scene

november 15th, a car collided with san jose officer mark hernandez' police motorcycle. he suffered 10 broken ribs, a fractures scapula and a concussion. >> i am absolutely happy that this is all that happened. >> reporter: this is a photo of herds -- photo of hernandez who was wearing his new helmet. still hernandez is facing a long road to recovery and he'll do it without the extra 5% hazard pay he's used to receiving. it's been cut while he's on leave. >> it doesn't seem to fit where they pay you for a hazard if and when the hazard happens, now they stopped paying you. >> this is going a little bit too far. especially in light of the fact that we're losing 70 plus officers a year. this is not the time to nickel and dime people. >> if we had dozens and dozens

of employees who are receiving premium pay that they're not actually earning while they're on duty that becomes a problem for us. half a million dollars a year for our city is a lot of money. >> reporter: while his focus is on resting and rehabbing, this change to his paycheck feels like a flub. >> do they even care of how they treat us. >> reporter: hernandez doesn't know how long the injuries from this accident will keep him from work. but disability checks are not taxed so the amount that hernandez is taking home may actually be higher. ann rubin. californians who are rushing to pay their first health insurance premium under the affordable care act now have a little more time to do so. the state's health insurance exchange is extending its deadline until january 15th. the extension is for customers who's coverage takes effect on january 1st. covered california says this is a one time payment extension. payment for coverage is due at the beginning of each month.

open enrollment continues through march 31st. a good day on wall street today for oakland based pandora. the stock price surged 14% and closed at $32.45. shares are up 200% in just the past year. men's warehouse upped the ante today in its attempt to buy joseph a. bank. it delivered a $1.6 billion offer directly to shareholders. that's 4-1/2% more than the previous offer but it comes with a catch. accept the offer by march 31st or it goes away. and the bankrupt mi pueblo grocery store filed for bankruptcy. it wants to maximize the assets by its sales, financing or other transactions. one of the small ski resorts in the sierra has decided to close down due to a

lack of snow. donner ski ranch could reopen if it gets snow. other ski resorts are dependent on manmade snow. a lot of people who dependent on snow for their income are hoping that it starts snowing soon. well how dry has it been. certainly a very dry december. take a look at the rainy days in december. we had one that showed up on the sixth of december. mostly dry throughout the month of december and now as we move into january, we've been dry. we got a little chance for something around here. as you get into the eighth and the ninth we have a chance for clouds. i'll show you that it could bring some precipitation but really lightning. it wouldn't be enough to break what's going on here. look at all the clouds streaming. these clouds would be good fuel for heavy rains if they were attached to the jet stream. jet stream is way up here.

these clouds are scooting in underneath it and scooting over us. a few showers showing up in eureka. but for the most part we're just missing it. things are phasing together. you get rain as you typically would in the winter. but this isn't a typical winter at all. these are the current numbers or those were the current numbers. tonight's cloudy and cool out there. the clouds will be around tomorrow for a time. still plenty of clouds and temperatures tomorrow just like today but slightly cooler. so low 60s. overnight lows you'll find freezing spots like napa and santa rosa. 32 in fairfield. 33 in antioch. so kind of cool spots but nothing like we saw a few weeks ago when we were looking at 20s. this low pressure center sets up. the winds are still going offshore but the clouds are coming in over the top of that. they filter sunshine and drop our temperatures as we go into the middle of the week toward wednesday and thursday. now on thursday, that system

gets a little closer to us. the computer model is going to illustrate that. tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. there's plenty of clouds. there's the rain out there. there's that clearing and fog at the coast by tomorrow morning. so the winds have shifted. they're coming on shore now. you see now on shore push. the moisture starts to move in. that's wednesday morning. still no rain. maybe some drizzle. and then there we are wednesday afternoon, maybe some drizzle on the coast. but no big deal. then here's what we're tracking. there. thursday morning you see that system kind of move in. and there's a little bit of green associated with it. so that's it. i mean that's the best i can offer you right now. 62 in fairfield. 63 in brentwood. these are forecast highs. welcome back to the workweek. that's the best i can do. there's the five day forecast with the bay area weekend in view. it's spooky now because we need the rain. look at all those clouds. and there's rain all around us. north of us. but it's not hitting here. >> everywhere but here. >> everywhere but here. >> thank you bill. mark is here now.

you told me a minute ago and i'm just shocked by the way this turned out. one of the most thrilling finishes for a college football game in a long time. >> the biggest come back in a bcs championship game. to the last second you kept thinking, maybe another miracle for auburn. maybe most miraculous is that they didn't win. because they led all game until the end. nick marshal deep, they led. did auburn. 7-10 at halftime. this is whitfield the kick off return. he is gone. 100yards and fsu's first lead of the game comes deep into the fourth quarter. but auburn, to the credit retaliating right away.
