accused of targeting innocent children with their parents in the parking lot of the walmart. he is facing six felony counts for kidnapping a 7-year-old outside her home. he talks about the incident in a interview on tuesday. >> she looked at me and said i am scared. and i said i am scared and we laugh cried. >> david douglas instilled fear with the intent to commit lewd act dissteal, take, hold, arrest and carry away jane doe 1 by use of force, violence and threat of great bodily harm. he did commit a lewd and lascivious act upon the girl. david douglas tried to steal three other girls from their

the man accused of kidnapping and killing sierra lamar was in court today. he did not enter a plea. he was arrested in may 2012, two months after she was reported missing. today the defense attorney requested a delay till march to study the large amount of evidence in the case. for supporters of the family, it was another frustrating delay. >> we are not getting the information that we need to go out and have better searches. these people here, they search every thursday and saturday. >> the volunteers and the family have been holding out hope that he will provide details on where the body might be once the proceedings get underway. man who killed another man in a mall pleaded not guilty be reason of insanity.

lights up the early morning sky in san jose as crews work to contain it before homes go up in flames. right now the fire is still smoldering as they pour water on hot spots. the fire was reported just after 5:30 a.m. this morning. news chopper 2 flew over the building at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon and you can still see smoke coming from the ruins. ktvu's robert handa has been on the scene. he is live with why it will take a while for firefighters to pinpoint the cause. >> reporter: firefighters are going to be here at the scene for a while. checking for hot spots. and trying to determine what caused the fire that burned for hours. >> reporter: the massive 5 alarm fire started around 5:30

a.m. this morning and the building had plenty of fuel to keep burning. >> reporter: more than 100 firefighters from san jose and other agents attacked the flames. more than a muzzin domes -- dozen homes were evacuated. she showed me a picture. a scary sight of flames. >> they thought the house was going to go up. the flames were so close. you can you could see -- you could see it lit up the area. >> reporter: some schools canceled class for the day. >> what would have happened if we had school? that would have been a worse situation. good thing is, the school is fine and people are fine. everyone got out safe. >> reporter: firefighters worked hard to keep the fire from spreading. >> split the lines into smaller diameters and running from

detector and that was it. got us out of the house. >> firefighters say the house presented a challenge. it was built in 1907 and the walls were made of wood and plaster. the cause is under investigation. the sheriff's department says it hasn't made an arrest for a 911 hoax last night. the s.w.a.t. team with san jose police and fire all responded in force to a home in the 2200 block of fruitdale avenue at 8:45 p.m. last night. a caller claimed two people were shot and there water explosives on the property. the sheriff's department said it was clear this was a hoax because the house was vacant. two people are recovering from burn injuries as the investigation continues. the explosion happened about 3:30 p.m.

yesterday afternoon in a laboratory. officials say one worker suffered serious burns to the face and the other was burned on the hand. in may there was another incident where a worker was burned. a san francisco man was sited for flashing a badge so he could ride muni for free. they detained him after he pulled out a sergeants badge. while they waited for police he asked to use the bath room and flushed the badge down the toilet. he confessed to buying the badge on the street. a teenager is recovering in oakland after being shot while he was on his way to school. the shooting happened before 10:00 a.m. this morning at a bus stop. mice say the victim -- police say the victim ran to the high school. ktvu's paul chambers is live outside the school with what measures are being taken to keep students safe.

forced to stop funding the project. >> reporter: support is dwindling. he tells me it is time for california to walk away. >> we have an obligation to make sure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely. >> reporter: he says congress needs to support high-speed rail. he says it is a pipe dream to think the private sector will build the infrastructure. he says if america commits to rail the private asector and money -- sector and money will follow. >> they want to know the country is making a investment over a period of years. >> reporter: california high- speed rail authority officials are confident they can weather the set backs and move the project forward. he will question the chairman about state funding, private investors and delays.

flu related deaths today. four in the bay area. they are the latest in a string of casualties this flu season. a look at where the deaths are occurring and the ages of the victims. this afternoon we learned a person died in san francisco but their age hasn't been released. a 40-year-old woman died of the flu. officials are also confirming the death of a 23-year-old. the death of a 61-year-old brings the death toll oo it two in -- to two in santa clara county. these deaths have been added to the list we have been reporting on. and we have coverage, team coverage tonight. ktvu's tom vacar found place wheres the vaccine is running low but first john sasaki joins us with a look at why some of the victims were young, healthy adults. >> reporter: a growing list of
