flu related deaths today. four in the bay area. they are the latest in a string of casualties this flu season. a look at where the deaths are occurring and the ages of the victims. this afternoon we learned a person died in san francisco but their age hasn't been released. a 40-year-old woman died of the flu. officials are also confirming the death of a 23-year-old. the death of a 61-year-old brings the death toll oo it two in -- to two in santa clara county. these deaths have been added to the list we have been reporting on. and we have coverage, team coverage tonight. ktvu's tom vacar found place wheres the vaccine is running low but first john sasaki joins us with a look at why some of the victims were young, healthy adults. >> reporter: a growing list of deaths across the bay area and

it is still early in the flu season. >> awful. terrible. i have been in bed for four days. >> reporter: she is one of residents who come down with the flu. >> six flu related cases that are hospitalized. >> the death confirmed here today was that of a woman in her 4th 40s. >> there is a 200% increase in the number of flu tests that are positive as compared to at the same time in 2012. it is an earlier peak. >> reporter: it could mean it may be a longer or severe flu season. she was 23 years old and healthy. >> most people don't seek care

with flu-like illnesses till late. >> reporter: he is an er doctor where he says they have seen a lot of flu like systems but not only confirmed flu cases. this could be a bad flu season. >> the problem is, if you have preexisting conditions the flu can put you over the edge. if you don't have the capacity to fight it off, that is when you get into trouble. >> reporter: this is the third flu story i have done and experts say the best way to protect yourself is by getting the flu shot and by washing your hands frequently. john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. the number one thing you should do to protect yourself from the flu is get vaccinated. new at 6:00 p.m. ktvu's tom vacar worked on that part of the story and found a few shortages of the flu shot. tom? >> reporter: this pharmacy here and one up the street may be

the tip of the ice burg, the size which we don't know yet. >> reporter: he got his flu shot today. he still has more than a thousand doses on hand. >> because we had deaths people say i better get it and so i think there has been a surge. >> reporter: he says a few shortages have arisen. >> we called around, some have it, some don't. >> reporter: government health supplies are in good shape. >> contra costa county has no shortages. >> reporter: we called 2 dozen pharmacies as well as big box stores, we found only two cvs stores that didn't have shots available and both are close to

the retirement community. many people choose to go without. >> there is a number of deaths every year and i would assume the local health department would push more of a flu shot if there was a concern out there. >> if you get one of those shots, you got to go to the hospital afterwards. >> most places can get resupplied in a few days but if more deaths occur that could cause a rush. flu kills enough americans to fill 75 jumbo jets every year. tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. researchers found hormones may play a role in how effective the vaccine is. men with high testosterone get low benefit. and women getting a better

money these two kept. >> the lodge, a small spot where police say two rooms were used as headquarters for a sex trafficking ring. >> recovered a fire arm and two females acting as prostitutes. >> the rests were -- the arrests were a result of a police officer. he recognized a 14-year-old run away. she pulled over and started a conversation. >> talked to her about the good rapport and got her to come forward with information. >> reporter: police said the girl led them to the lodge and as they pulled up, out in front were the two. the girl immediately identified the two men who kidnapped her and forced her into prostitution. >> these guys are committing sex acts on the girls who they

were also sending out on to the streets. >> yes. >> reporter: he expects both nene be charged tomorrow. -- men to be marged tomorrow. -- charged tomorrow. the 14-year-old girl is in custody of social services. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. happening now, police, a swat team and u.s. marshals searching for a man. police were told a armed robbery suspect was spotted. they surrounded a motel 6 earlier today. they have taken four people into custody but are searching for a fifth person. they are doing a room to room search. this afternoon oakland police released a sketch of a man who attacked a woman on new year's day. he was wearing a gray parka and

smelled like cigarettes. police say he approached a 19- year-old woman about 8:30 p.m. on new year's day. he grabbed her, said he had a gun and began dragging her but she was able to escape. >> governor jerry brown said despite an improving economy now is time to show caution when it comes to spending. ktvu's ken pritchett reports, the government's budget includes billions in new spending, aimed at education. >> reporter: governor jerry brown talked responsibility in the face of billions of dollars of surplus. >> when the money is in, people want to go for it. and we have tried to keep it very measured. >> when it comes to k-12 education increased revenues means a big boost, $10 billion. >> after years of drought and cut backs and pink slips for

teachers, we are being able to provide a substantial amount of new money. >> reporter: spending will increase to $13,000 per student. up $2,200 over 2012. and will climb in 2017. >> funding is still below other states but it is a strong step in the right direction. >> reporter: she says the $10 billion goes only part of the way to make up for past cuts. missing, money targeted for transitional kindergarten. >> i didn't expect that it would be in his budget but he now knows it is a priority. >> reporter: they must craft their own budget plan which will include this kindergarten for all. republicans question where the

sister, david douglas was ubset. -- up set. he expressed the cries for help publicly when he kidnapped a 7- year-old girl. >> she said i am scared. i said i am scared. >> reporter: david douglas is charged for the kidnapping. it states he did -- david douglas is charged for trying to kidnap three other girls the day before. david douglas says he did have a falling out with his family. >> my mom and i had a falling out. >> the judge decided to deny this restraining order request. david douglas remains in jail on a $7.1 million bond. cristina rendon, ktvu channel 2 news. fire investigators are trying to figure out what

sparked a 5 alarm fire at a warehouse in san jose this morning. news chopper 2 flew over the building this afternoon. the started around 5:30 a.m. at the warehouse near 101. it took 100 firefighters to knock down the flames and get the fire under control. for a time the fire moved dangerously close to homes. >> when i came looking at it right now, there is a lot of damage but i thought the house would have went too. >> smoke forced the closure of highway 101. the parents of a 16-year- old girl who died after being struck by two san francisco firefighter trucks at sfo have filed a legal claim against the city. it is the first step towards a formal lawsuit. it said firefighters abandon her after the crash. her family says the department

failed to properly train firefighters to assess victims, mark their locations and avoid hitting them. two other people were also killed. governor jerry brown met with members of his drought task force as the state is facing a water shortage. news chopper 2 flew over the reservoir and captured these pictures. you can see land in some spots. we have seen one of the driest years on record. they have requested state drought assistance and several other communities imposed water reductions. the governor will do everything possible to allow flexible use of the state's water. the folks at the brewing company are aware of the water supply. they are analyzing the situation and in the process of conducting a water audit.

theater in san jose that some say on prime land for development. the theater is considered for historic land mark status at city hall. the structure was built in 1964. the structure was a tribute to the high tech industry. now property owners want to demolish it but a group gathered 4,000 signatures to the save it. >> gives san jose an opportunity do they want to look like every other city. >> if nominated as a land mark, hearings will be held to decide on the fate. a new head coach with a familiar last name in the nfl and one of the key players on the 49ers defense talks about what he consider as advantage over carolina. >> gasia mikaelian live with what we are working on for bay area news at 7:00 on tv 36.
