coastal fog, almost a summer pattern and a few high clouds will come around. mostly sunny today. a little warmer, cold for some under clear skies. big difference in the lows, 32 to 52. a lots of sun, although there will be patchy low clouds by the coast. san francisco starting off mostly clear. there will low clouds around the area. a high of 59. sunny to mostly sunny. 30s for fairfield. santa rosa at 54. low clouds around san mateo. sfo. livermore, walnut creek, san jose. also concord, a lot of rain in the pacific northwest, some will dive into our area giving us cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. very light rain. more drizzle than anything else. patchy low clouds. a little bit warmer number a lot. just a little bit. mainly upper 50s, close to the coast and bay. low to mid-60s inland. we have a fatal motorcycle crash on 580 westbound just before the 80 split. this crash occurred about half

hour ago now, and has 580 at a standstill. 24 is getting busy as well. coming on down the hill past college. and getting into the main part of 24980. police are looking for, they say they are looking for a blue chevy pickup truck that has front end damage that may have been responsible for this motorcycle crash. they don't know what direction it went on. it's a blue chevy silverado, we're trying to get more information. they're getting ready for it us. they want us to help the find the person who may have been responsible for the fatal motorcycle crash. let's go out and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, so far it looks good. it has been lighter than usual. we also want to mention that northbound 101 is recovering from san jose from an earlier alert at mckee. we had a crash there. that crash is gone. traffic is recovering.

7:03. let's go back to the desk: developing news now from san jose, 3 suspicious fires this morning, all within one hour and all in the same neighborhood. ktvu's janine de la vega is live in san jose to tell us what this morning's fires have in common with a string of suspicious fires over the last couple of days. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, an arson investigator was here a short time ago. he just left. he was looking for evidence into how the fire started. we know where it started, here on the outside of the home, where you can see it's burned. now, the family who lives here was too shaken up to talk on camera, but they suspect someone started it because they were sleeping when it happened. now, this fire is one of three that began within an hour of each other, all around 3:30 this morning. it all happened in a five block radius in the area of 24th 24th street and san antonio, all the way down to san fernando street. at the house in 28th vote, the family said someone knocked on the door to tell them the house was on fire.

they found an oil can in the bush that wasn't theirs. before firefighters arrived to that fire, they were on 24th 24th street, handling two other fires that started on porches. the woman who lives at one of those homes was awakened by someone telling her that her house was on fire. damage there was minimal, but firefighters immediately called in arson investigators because over the past 3 days, at least 7 fires have occurred. >> the fact that we have exterior fires abutting against homes, multiple locations is concerned. we have someone putting those citizens at risk and that's unacceptable. >> reporter: yesterday firefighters responded to three fires in the same downtown neighborhood. that included a fire that started on the outside of a home on 17th and san antonio street and caused major damage. the family inside was able to escape and there were no injuries. there was also that huge 5 alarm fire that started in a warehouse close by. fire officials aren't sure if

that warehouse fire is connected. they haven't been able to get investigators in there to find the origin just because it was so huge. but all these incidents began between 2 to 5 in the morning, all in the same neighborhood. it's raising a red flag. they are working with the san jose police department this morning. we've seen patrol cars out here. earlier they had their flashlights out here. they don't yet have a suspect description to release, but they are staying on top of this, because this is potentially dangerous, could be catastrophic, very lucky that so far nobody's been injured. reporting live from san jose. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks. 7:06. firefighters say lint in a dryer may have sparked another fire that destroyed a san jose town home and damaged two others. 8 people were displaced by the fire, which started around 6:00 last night at a townhouse on trevino terrace off trinidad

drive. a neighbor captured this cell phone video of the huge flames. >> it's scary. it's about five houses down and to think that it started from a dryer machine, and possibly like the lint or something. it's so scary. >> three people were inside the home where the fire started, but no one was hurt. time now 7:06. health officials strongly advising you to get a flu shot now that 9 deaths here in the bay area are linked to the h1n1 virus. yesterday alone, we found out about four more deadly cases of h1n1 in sonoma, san mateo, san francisco, and santa clara counties, the youngest victim, a 23-year-old man who was healthy before he came down with the flu. the flu is hitting young adults especially hard this year. what we're finding out about the latest death of a 23-year- old sonoma county man and how health officials say you can

protect yourself. it's 7:07. a new development in the target security breach, just a short time ago, we found out the full scope of the theft, and it was a lot bigger than first thought. tara moriarty is live with the information stolen and the number of victims. good morning tara. >> reporter: good morning, if you shopped at target between november 27th and december 15 december 15th, listen up again, the hackers got a lot more than you bar r gained for. the -- bargained for. it includes mailing addresses, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of the customers. the ceo says ," i know that it is frustrating for our guests to learn that this information was taken and we are sorry that they are having to endure this. our guests expect more from us and deserve better. "target initially reported in mid december that about 40 million people who used credit or debit cards at its stores over the holiday season had their information compromised. the company said the

information swiped from the systems included customer names, credit card numbers, expiration dates and verification codes. they will be reaching out to customers via e-mail soon. guests will have 0 liability for the costs of fraudulent charges arising from the breach and they are offering one yore of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection for everyone who shopped during the stores during that period. guests will have three months to enroll in the program and where does that information go. we'll let you know coming up. live from emeryville, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, just hours ago, ones person was killed in a crash near the port of oakland, another person was hurt. this happened about 1:30 this morning near 7th and maritime street. police say the driver lost control and hit a pole. the driver was killed, his passenger was hurt. the cause is under investigation. police in santa rosa are investigating the third homicide in less than three weeks. the 911 call came in about 8:40

last night. police say when they arrived at a home on marble street, they found a 19-year-old man who had been shot in the head. they also found two male teenagers at the home who were questioned then released. police say the victim has been linked to a street gang but say they don't know if this is related to his death. so far, no suspects have been arrested. it is 7:10. a high school in oakland is working to step up security after a student was shot and wounded near campus. the principal of rosedale continuation high school plans to meet with police today after an 18-year-old student was shot at a bus stop near the school on fontain street. the student was able to walk for help. no arrests have been made and the shooting has left many students on edge. >> i can't believe it's on our campus. it's hard for me to understand

why. why is this happening at school, too. >> the principal of the school says he has asked for a bigger police presence near the campus. time now 7:10. law enforcement in solano county are paying tribute to a slain police officer killed in the line of duty. a sign has been placed for fallen vallejo police officer jim caput. it's at the section of highway 37 from highway 80 to highway 29 in north vallejo. that's where the officer was shot and killed in november 2011 as he chased after after after a bank robbery suspect. that sign was paid for by donations from fellow officers and residents as well as service groups in vallejo. the suspect, henry albert smith junior was captured. he is awaiting trial. it's 7:11. two suspects have been arrested for stirring up bank robberies in the south bay. four banks were robbed in san jose, milpitas and campbell

thane. new this morning, the labor department announced worst than expected news about jobs. only 74,000 new jobs were created in december. that's the fewest in three years. economists were expecting 193,000 new jobs. the cold weather that we had, it may have slowed down hiring, also construction companies cut 16,000 jobs. now, the jobless rate did fall. however, it fell to 6.7%. that's the lowest rate since october of 2008, but that's likely because more americans actually stopped looking for a job. the president's health care law is being targeted by republican lawmakers again. the republican led house is considering a bill that would

impose new requirements on the obama administration. that bill would require the administration to notify an individual of any security breach involving personal information provided to the government during health care enrollment. that notification would have to be done within two business days. 7:15. authorities in russia are investigator six suspicious deaths in at least one car explosion near the sight of next month's winter olympics. security forces have launched an antiterrorism sweep after finding the bodies of three men, along with explosive material in a region near the city of sochi. a day earlier, a body was found in a car that exploded in the same area and two other bodies were found in other cars. no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but officials suspect officials suspect czech rebels carried out the attack. a cup was gunned down late

monday night on a roadside after two tires had been punctured. investigators say 7 people have been arrested in connection with the shooting. monica spear was crowned ms. venezuela in 2004. time 7:16. a new defense department report finds that students at the military academies often think they have to put up with sexist and offensive behavior. it's part of a continuing examination of military culture, with the goal of reducing sexual harassment and assault. the report points to scandals involving sports team at the army, navy, and air force academies, during the last school year. and it urges leaders to do more to improve training, and prevention programs. another new report from the department of veteran's affairs shows there's an increase in suicides among younger male veterans. the latest information reveals a suicide rate for male veterans between the ages of 18 and 29 has jumped almost 44%

between 2009 and 2011. one doctor from the va says too many of the younger veterans are getting care for physical wounds, but they're not getting treatment for mental health problems: 7:17. the deep freeze that sent temperatures well below 0 in much of the u.s. is still affecting mail delivery. people living in several chicago neighborhoods say they haven't received any mail since saturday. >> i called this afternoon and was given the weather excuse, of course, you know the streets have been clear for two or three days, so i don't buy that anymore. >> the postal service says many side streets are unplowed and sidewalks are icy, slowing down male carriers. some mail trucks have broken down in the bitter cold. mail service should resume in chicago by tomorrow. the arctic chill has even left niagara falls covered in ice. the falls have not completely friends over, and they are

still flowing, but -- frozen over, and they are still flowing, but it's making a sight or visitors. and there is an ice bridge across the falls and left the observation deck completely covered in ice. i would be nervous to be up there on the observation deck. hold on carefully. time now just about 7:19. let's check in with sal. so far so good, how is it going out there now. we have that motorcycle accident. >> yes we do. >> that's the big problem in the bay area. i want to put it on the map so you can see it here. it's westbound 580 just before the mcarthur maze past highway 24. this occurred an hour ago. it was a hit-and-run crash where a pickup truck, they suspect the pickup truck may have had a role in this crash, and they have put out to the media that they are looking for a blue chevy silverado pickup truck, early 2000s, pickup truck that fled the scene after this crash. the motorcycle rider was killed

and they are still doing an investigation, so two left lanes there are closed and will be for quite some time as they pick up circumstantial evidence that kind of thing. 580 is backed -- pick up evidence and that kind of thing. 580 is backed up, coming slow past the hill, and trying to make the transition is onto 580. let's along and look at westbound 24. this traffic is busy as you drive there u. no major problems but it's going to be busy on 24, getting up into oakland because of that crash. and this morning's commute on northbound 280 in san jose, the south bend commute has become much better in the last half hour or so. 7:20. let's go to steve. thank you sir and a good morning. nice sunrise here for those of you listening but not watching. there you are. not as dramatic as the last couple of mornings. we had good ones here. over all though, mostly clear, low clouds around the coast, parts of the coast, not all. not sold out or anything. a little bit over the pay, a couple reports coming in.

high pressure went out it today, and a system coming in tomorrow will give a lot of cloud cover and maybe a little rain to the north. sunshine, mostly sunny. a little warmer today, but i would favor areas that are inland more so than near the coast because of the on shore breeze. saturday does lock cloudy to mostly cloudy. i think a lot of drizzle, similar to what we had a couple times this week here, coast and bay. most of the systems were too far south and not enough support. san francisco starting off with low clouds, sunny today, high of 59 degrees. inland temps are much colder, especially because we lost the cloud cover. santa rosa. napa. half-moon bay, 50. sfo52. gives you an indication of where some of the low cloud deck might be. and overall, look for a mostly sunny day. portland and seattle, heavy rain. this system looks good, is going to drop across and get rain it to northern california. i'll tell you the rest of the country continues to be active. tropical moisture from mexico keeps rolling along.

. check that out, a wild chase in san diego ends with shoot out. it was all caught on tape. police say the pursuit began yesterday morning when an officer tried to stop a man for talking on his cell phone while driving. the driver took off, leading police on a chase for an hour. police say the man brandished a gun so they opened fire. the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

some. 50s for others. here's sal. and we still have a pretty bad accident on 580 at mcarthur maze. westbound 580 at the maze and this crash is right, let me just move it over here, okay, let's see if we can do this again. let's move the map right over here, the accident is right here. 580 westbound at the 80 split. it was a fatal motorcycle crash and 580 is backed up all the way out to fruitvale. that's a very long way. this is a look at the 580 camera. it is just not moving as you come up to the mcarthur maze. the best way to get around it is to use 880 if you can. use 880 and you can get yourself through the mcarthur maze and get to the bay bridge in much better fashion. don't get on 580. 24 by the way is also slow as you come down the hill trying to interact with 580 as well. bay bridge toll plaza, you see it's light. if you can get yourself there using 880 or not 580, you'll be

in much better shape. 7:32. let's go back to the desk. >> sal thank you. it's 7:32. we have more coverage of the spike in flu deaths here in the bay area. allieal -- alex savage joining us live to tell how coworkers of a 23-year-old man who died are reacting to his death. >> i had a chance to speak with the boss of matthew walker. he tells me this young man was a good worker and this is a sad time for his coworkers. he had spent a year or so working in the produce department at g and c super market in santa rosa. the 23-year-old was the youngest flu victim so far this season here in the bay area, and his boss did confirm to me that walker died from the flu earlier this week after being admitted to the hospital around christmas time. his boss says that walker appeared to be in good health. just yesterday, we did learn of four more deadly cases of the

hsn1 in san francisco, and santa clara counties. health officials are urging people to get a flu vaccine. so far this season there ever been nine deaths reported across the bay area as a result of the h1n1 virus. up here at san to rosa memorial hospital, they are seeing a dozen or more people showing up every shift with flu symptoms and doctors are unsure why this infection hit some harder than others. it causes pneumonia, respiratory distress and organ failure. doctors are urging you to take antiflu drugs. if they are taken early, it it can delay the symptoms and prevent tragic situations across the bay area. a 23-year-old man working here at the super market for the past year or so, we have confirmed was one of the people who died from the flu this season. live in santa rosa. alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. time now 7:34. with bay area flu cases, even

flu deaths rising. here's a big push. at uc berkeley, they are trying to stop the spread of flu as students come back to classes that begin later this month. the goal is to encourage all students to get vaccinated. >> when people come back, they bring their germs with them. students will be arriving from flu from the northeast where it's been cold and dry, and they will join a congregate housing setting where they will be hugging and shaking hands and sharing cups and influenza. >> the flu vaccine this year does cover the h1n1 strain. it takes about 2 weeks for the vaccine to become effective. the peek activity for the flu is in early february. and with the number of people getting vaccinated growing, we were wondering if there could be a vaccine shortage here in the bay area. we randomly called more than two dozen pharmacies.

two cvs stores say they ran out of flu shots. both are located near the retirement community in walnut creek. the federal government says there are enough vaccines to go around. 7:35. back to the developing news we have been following for the last hour in oakland as a motorcyclist is dead and interstate 580 is a mess after an early morning hit-and-run crash. ktvu's tara moriarty just arrived on the scene and joins us now with an update to let us know what's happening there. good morning tara. >> good morning. this is a gruesome deadly accident and if you look behind me, you can see that we have two lanes only open on 580 westbound. this is just before the 80 split. there is a body laying there and it is covered up with a yellow tarp. the tow truck is on scene, and the chp says that this is a possible hit-and-run. officers say that a truck slammed into the motorcycle around 6:20 this morning. the highway patrol now actively looking for a dark blue chevy

silverado early 2000 model with front end damage. if you spot that truck, you should call authorities immediately. we understand that traffic is backed up beyond fruitvale avenue, saying to use 880 to get to the maze. don't get onto 580 because it is an absolute nightmare, and we were doing a live shot less than a quarter mile from here at the target, and we could see all of the sirens and we could hear them, and we wondered what was going on. we found out it was a fatal accident. officers looking for the dark blue silverado, it's a late 2000 model, early 2000 model, you can see here it's going to be time with these fatal investigations, they take time to complete. definitely try to avoid 580 if at all possible this morning. live from emeryville, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >> we'll check back for an update. thank you tara. we're also following developing news out of san jose this morning. three suspicious fires were reported, all within one hour

starting about 3:30 this morning. the fires all started outside houses and all within a 5 block radius in the area of 24th 24th street and san antonio. firefighters say this morning's fires are just the latest in a string of at least 7 suspicious fires over the last 3 days. ktvu's janine de la vega has been talking with firefighters this morning and she'll join us with a live report at 8:00 to let us know what firefighters say all these fires have in common. and firefighters also spent the night monitoring hot spots from a massive warehouse fire in san jose. more than a hundred firefighters responded to the fire which broke out around 5:30 yesterday morning on east julien street near highway 101. we brought you live coverage of the fire yesterday as it burned for hours and forced people living in more than a dozen homes to evacuate. >> they thought the whole house was going to go up because the flames were so close, and by looking at the picture, you could see it just let up that

whole area, and it was pretty scary. >> the fire also forced nearby schools including rocket ship discovery prep to close yesterday. we just got off the phone with that school and have confirmed it is closed again told due to a strong smell of smoke but is expected to reopen on monday. firefighters are still investigating the cause of that fire. meanwhile, the san jose fire department may actually lose $2 million in funding because of inadequate response times to medical emergencies. santa clara county says in the past 14 months crews have responded within 8 minutes 88% of the time, and that's below the required 90% minimum. county supervisors could penalize them by pulling a $2.1 million in funding. time 7:39. disturbing details in the case of an antioch man who admitted to kill -- kidnapping a 7-year-

old girl last friday. david douglas attempted to but was unsuccessful in kidnapping three other children the day before. other records show douglas was struggling with family problems and that his stepfather asked for a restrain order against douglas two months ago. douglas told us in a jailhouse interview he did have a falling out with his family. >> my mom and i had a falling out, so i have been living out of my car in the marina. >> the restraining order request was denied. douglas says he's been trying to get psychological help. he is still in the con contra costa jail on $7 million bail. california governor jerry brown calls his budget plan a very important step forward for the state. >> for this year, there's very good news. good news in the fiscal stability and resources available for the state of

stock moving lower after a disappointing jobs report. and. the aluminum company posted a 2 billion dollars 4th 4th quarter loss due to low aluminum prices and target is down over 1% on this morning's news, the security breach for customers was much bigger than first thought. taking a live look, the dow currently down 48. the nasdaq down 3. s&p also down 3. as i mentioned, new numbers this morning are painting a dismal picture of the job market. ktvu's pam cook is in the news room with the report and the numbers that many politicians are not talking about. pam. >> that's right. you may hear that the unemployment rate dropped last month. economists warn that number is deceiving. employers added 74,000 jobs in december. that is the worst monthly job creation in nearly three years and well below what economists

forecast. the unemployment rate did drop to 6.7%, but it is due to a shrinking work force. a record 91.8 million people are not participating in the work force, meaning they have given up looking for a job. that also means they are not counted in the unemployment rate. the official jobless rate includes only those people actively searching for a new job. now economists say a broader measure of unemployment that includes discouraged and underemployed workers is more than 13%. now, weather did play a role in some of the problems for december. this morning's report says 273,000 people were not able to work because of the cold temperatures across the country in december. that is above the 5 year average. many of those jobs are in construction. now, this morning's report could also affect the plan by senate democrats to resume long- term unemployment benefits. senate majority leader harry reid pushed for a reworked version but blocked republicans

police released this sketch of the suspect described as an african-american man in his 20s. 5-7, or 5-8, weighing 180 pounds. during the attack, the suspect wore a gray hooded parka, and the victim says he smelled like cigarettes. the 19-year-old woman told investigators the suspect grabbed her as she walked on 17 17th street near jackson, not far from lake merritt and that the suspect also had a gun. but as he was dragging her, she fell to the ground, and then was able to escape. a $5000 reward is being offered in this case. in a story you'll see only on 2, two east bay police departments worked together to break up a human trafficking ring. richmond police officer amit nase says earlier this week, he saw a teenager who he had recognized from last year. they started talking and she gave him information that led to a prostitution ring in hayward. >> we went to the motel and

exception. higher clouds, but a little more sun today than yesterday. 50s by the water's edge. low to mid-50s inland. we're just about to talk at the fatal crash in oakland, but i want to mention, traffic is going to be okay on some of the other freeways trying to get to the maze. don't use 580. 80 westbound looks good as you drive to the mcarthur maze. no major problems and at the toll plaza there's a very little wait. 880, for example, you can get there. the fatal crash, put it on the map here, is westbound 580. about a half mile west of highway 24. it happened almost two hours ago. live on the scene is ktvu reporter tara moriarty who has more details on exactly what happened. tara. yeah, the chp says that this is a possible hit-and-run, a truck hitting a motorcycle with such force that it killed the motorcyclist. and behind me, you can see that traffic is an absolute nightmare. we saw the man that was from that suv over to the right hand

side there. we saw that he was just taken away in a patrol car. we believe that he was a witness to the accident. his air bags actually deployed during the accident. now, this is a particularly gruesome scene, so the chp has moved the patrol car r in front of the body, which is still lying on the freeway, and officers have been scouring the area for evidence just before 6:30 this morning. that's when the accident happened. two lanes are still shut down. we're on 580 westbound, just before the 80 split. again, this was a hit-and-run. officers say a truck slammed into a motorcycle. the highway patrol now actively looking for a dark blue chevy silverado, early 2000 model with front end damage, and again, traffic is really really backed up here. we understand that it has gone all the way back to fruitvale avenue, so very far. sal of course has been advising folks to use 880 to get through the maze. simply avoid 580 at all costs

w. these fatal investigationings they take a long time to wrap up. that is the latest live from emeryville, tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 8:03. now to another developing story in san jose. three suspicious fires this morning, all within one hour, all in the same neighborhood. firefighters say this morning fires may be connected to several suspicious fires in san jose over the past couple of days. ktvu's janine de la vega is in san's at the scene of this latest fire, and you just talked to the family who lives there. >> reporter: yes. the woman who lives inside is upset. she's shaken up. you know, here's some of the damage. let's take a look at it. you can see it right l. she says she has to take her husband now to the doctors because he inhaled a lot of smoke and is coughing. you can see the side of the house is completely blackened. let's go to the video taken early this morning. this fire is one of three that began within an hour of each

other, all within a five hour radius of 24th street and san antonio. all the way down to san fernando street. firefighters were called at 3:30 this morning. two fires that started on porches of the home. the woman inside was sleeping and woke up to someone telling her that the house was on fire. damage was minimal, but about 45 minutes later, firefighters were called to another house on 28 28th street. the family there says someone knocked on their door to tell them their house was on fire, and they found an oil can hidden behind a bush they say wasn't theirs. firefighters immediately called in arson investigators because all these fires they say appear suspicious. one of the residents who didn't want to appear on camera, the woman that i told you about, she suspects someone maliciously started it. >> put my children easterly the's -- children's life at risk. he needs to realize what he's doing is wrong. there's two other houses he lit up too. >> reporter: in the past two days, there have been seven

fires that have occurred in the same downtown neighborhood. yesterday firefighters responded to a fire that started on the outside of 17th street and san antonio. and it caused major damage. the family inside was able to escape, and fortunately, there were no injuries. there was also the huge 5 alarm fire that started in a warehouse close by. but fire officials aren't sure if that warehouse fire is connected, but in all these incidents, these fires began between 2 to 5 in the morning. they're all in a six block radius. it's raising a red flag. that's why they called out arson: they're also being assisted by police who have been doing patrols. at this point, they don't have a suspect description but again, they're working on this to try to figure out if somebody is in fact starting all these fires. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. lint in a cloths dryer may have started another fire last night that destroyed a san jose townhouse and damaged two

others. 8 people were displaced by this fire. this one started at 6:00 last night at a town trevino terrace. a cell phone video captured these huge flames. >> it's scary. it's five houses down and to think it started from a dryer machine and possibly like the lint or something. it's so scary. >> three people were inside the house when the fire started but no one was hurt. it's 8:07. health officials are strongly recommending everyone get a flu shot now that 9 deaths in the bay area are linked to the h1n1 virus. yesterday alone, we found out about 4 more deadly cases of h1n1 in sonoma, san mateo, san francisco and isn't -- santa clara county. a 23-year-old is the youngest victim, and matthew walker was healthy before coming down with the flu and dying.

coming up at 8:30. what the 23-year-old's coworkers have saying following the spike in flu deaths in the bay area. time is 8:07. new this morning, just hours ago, one person was killed in an early morning crash near the port of oakland, and another person was hurt. this happened about 1:30 this morning, near 7th and maritime street. police say the driver lost control and slammed into a pole. that driver was killed. the passenger inside was hurt. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. police in santa rosa investigating the city's third homicide in less than three weeks. 911 call came in about 8:40 last night. police say when they arrived at a home on marble vote, they found a 19-year-old man who had been shot in the head. they also found two young male teenagers there. they were questioned and later released. police say the victim has been linked to a street gang but they say don't know if this is related to his death. no suspects have been arrested

as yet. it is 8:08. a worker at an o'reilly auto parts store in sacramento county lost his life last night while trying to stop an armed robbery. witnesses say the suspect went into the shop, and ordered three workers to the ground. but one of the clerks then stabbed the suspect who in turn shot and killed him. there were two shoppers at the time in the store, but they were not hurt. moments later, the suspect was seen running away without stealing any cash, but he remains at large this morning. the clerk who died was just 22 years old. time is 8:09. law enforcement in solano county are honoring a slain police officer killed in the line of duty. a new street sign is tribute to fallen vallejo police officer jim capoot. it's on a section of highway 37 between highway 80 and highway 29 in north vallejo. that's theory the scene where capoot was shot and killed in november 2011 as he chased a bank robbery suspect.

that sign was paid for by donations from fellow officers, residents and service groups nava in -- vallejo. the suspect, henry albert smith junior was captured. he's awaiting trial. they're near the end of an investigation of a 13-year-old boy by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy. it's not clear when the report of the shooting of the andy lopez will be turned over to the district attorney's office for review. the district attorney is deciding whether to file charges in that october shooting. the 13-year-old andy lopez was killed. deputy eric gailhouse says he opened fire because the toy gun that lopez was holding looked like a real assault rifle. it is 8:10. a virginia court could be changing one of the key components of the yelp review site. yelp promises reviewers they can say what they mean because they can post anonymously. now that court is ordering yelp to release the names of 7

by that data breach. those computer hackers accessed the information between november 27th and december 15 december 15th at the height of the holiday shopping season. target also said it will close some of its stores this may because of poor sales. it is 8:15. authorities in russia are investigating 6 suspicious deaths and at least one car explosion not far from the site of next month's winter olympics. security forces have launched an antiterrorism sweep after finding the bodies of three men, along with explosive material in the region near the city of sochi. a day earlier, a body was found in a car that exploded in the same area and two other bodies were found in other cars. no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but officials suspect rebels carried them out. your time is 8:16. that cruise ship that ship wrecked off the coast of italy back in 2012 is going to be towed from the water this summer and taken apart. the announcement about the

time now 8:25. a 71-year-old, did you see this, a 71-year-old woman crashed her car through the front door of a new jersey drugstore, it was all caught on camera. you saw it. this happened wednesday at a rite aid in rutherford new jersey. police say the driver lost control of that car and you saw an 18-year-old woman, she was just walking out the door at the time and she was hit.

both she and the driver suffered minor injuries. a wild police chase in san diego ended with a shoot out and this was all caught on camera. now, this chase started yesterday morning. a san diego police officer tried to stop a man who was talking on his cell phone as he drove. the driver took off. the police chased him for an hour. as the driver stopped, police say he had a gun and they opened fired. the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. we have no word on his condition as far as this morning is concerned. it's 8:26. hard to believe, but 7 years ago, steve jobs unveiled the first prototype for the iphone and started the revolution. steve jobs took the stage at san francisco's moscowny center on january 9th 9th 2007 to introduce the first iphone: it

good morning, welcome back. it is 8:30. we're live. our cameras, you can see we're moving around, we're on interstate 580 in oakland. we have been telling you about this for hours. a deadly crash this morning has really backed up traffic. this has been happening for hours. sal will be here in a moment with some details on some alternate routes you can take to get around it. that's coming up in just about a minute. this is friday, january 10th. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. let's go to steve now. >> thank you dave. we have areas of fog or low clouds, if you will, coming in from the coast, not so much inland, but a little bit around the bay, and a few high clouds mainly favoring the north bay right now. 40s in the temps or 30s inland temps, definitely dropped about 10 degrees compared to yesterday. 40s and 50s, due to the low cloud pattern. i know it seems like a summer time pattern. as you know, it's definitely not. this system, though, a lot of

energy with this system. heavy rain in the pacific northwest, light rain to the north. i think we'll get drizzle here. clouds and cooler temps. that will be saturday. today, low clouds, fog, sun, mostly sunny. temperatures inland in the 60s. by the coast and bay, some upper 50s. here's sal. we are following that crash, a fatal crash on 580 westbound at the mcarthur maze, blocking the three left lanes or 2 1/2 lanes, really, but the traffic is really backed up into oakland. this has been out there for more than two hours. chp thinks it was a hit-and-run crash, and they are looking for a vehicle associated with this. we'll tell you more about that later on. i want to mention that 24 is backed up as well. coming onto the bottom of the hull, and 580 is to be avoided. use 880 to get to the bay bridge or use 80 westbound, but 580 is not recommended. you're going to be in a lot of stop and go traffic. let's talk about 280 in san jose. and the south bay commute has been actually doing pretty well

after an earlier crash this morning. things have cleared up and traffic is moving well. at 8:32. let's go back to the desk. >> we have continuing coverage of the spike in flu deaths here in the bay area. 9 flu deaths now reported in 7 different counties, including sonoma county. ktvu's alex savage is live in sonoma now with reaction to the death of a 23-year-old santa rosa man. alex. >> good morning, dave, this young man's coworkers, we have been talking to them this morning, they are simply devastated by his sudden death and they are surprised at how someone so young and healthy could become sick, this sick from the flu. matthew walker, they knew him as mattie, here at g and g super market. this is where he worked the last two years. he called in sick just a few days before christmas and shortly after that was admitted to the hospital. this is a photo he posted to his facebook page from his hospital room. his employer says walker died from the h1n1 virus earlier on

this week. his boss says walker didn't have any preexisting health issues and was in good health, along with working at the market, walker also worked part- time for his dad's flooring company. his coworkers are finding it hard to believe someone as young as him could die from the flu. >> very unexpected. very. you know, he's 23 years old. much too young to go. and he was a great guy. he was really friendly. everybody lovered him. everybody just absolutely adored him. he was a really nice guy and we're going to really miss him. >> walker is the youngest flu victim here in the bay area so far this season. just yesterday, we learned there were four more deadly cases of the h1n1 virus in sonoma county, san mateo county, san francisco county, and santa clara county. at santa rosa memorial hospital in sonoma county they are seeing at least a dozen or more people showing up during every shift with flu symptoms and

health officials for that reason are strongly urging people to get a flu vaccine. they have had a total of 9 deaths now reported across the bay area from the h1n1 virus. and again, the youngest victim, a 23-year-old man who was working in a produce section here at this super market, before he fell ill just before christmas. live this morning in santa rosa, alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. time is 8:34. with bay area flu cases rising, there's a really big push to encourage everybody to get flu shots. at uc berkeley, they're trying to stop the spread of the flu as students come back to campus for classes to begin later this month. the goal is to encourage all students to get vaccinated. >> when people come back, they bring their germs with them. so students will be arriving from flu from the northeast where it's been cold and dry, and they will join a congregate housing setting where they will be hugging and shaking hands and sharing cups and juice and

influenza. >> the flu vaccine does cover the h1n1 strain. it takes about 2 weeks for the vaccine to be effective. the peek activity for the flu is in early february. and with the growing number of people getting the flu shots, we wondered if there could be a vaccine shortage in the area. we randomly called 2 dozen farm sis. two cvs stores say they did run out of flu shots. both are located near a retirement community in walnut creek. the federal government says there are enough vaccines to go around. it is 8:36. we are following developing news out of san jose. three suspicious fires all reported within one hour of each other this morning, and in the same neighborhood. this morning's fires follow a similar pat attorney a string of 7 suspicious fires in san jose over the last throe days. fires happened between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. in one of the fires yesterday

morning, a historic home on south 17th street was badly damaged. the couple who live in the home did get out safely. and firefighters also spent the night monitoring hot spots from the massive warehouse fire in san jose. more than a hundred firefighters responded to the fire which broke attaint orr around 5:-- broke out around 5:30 yesterday morning on east julien street. we brought you live george yesterday as it burned for hours and forced people to evacuate. >> they thought the whole house was going to go up because the flames were so close and by looking at the picture you could see it just lit up the whole area, and it was pretty scary. >> the fire also forted nearby schools including rocket ship discovery prep to close yesterday. the school is closed again today due to a strong smell of smoke but is expected to reopen on monday. firefighters are still investigating the cause of this warehouse fire. time is now 8:37. governor jerry brown calls his

new budget plan a very important step forward for the state. >> very good news, good news in the fiscal stability and resources available for the state of california. >> but despite a small surplus, the governor is warning california's not out of the woods and he's urging restraint. republicans agree with that, but they're worried democrats in the legislature may want to increase spending. >> what worries someone like me is that the governor, you know, gets overwhelmed by his own hopplemies as i like to say. >> the governor's spending plan is $155 billion. he's going to revise it in may depending on tax revenues. the deadline for passing it is june 15th. and here's a look at inside the governor's spending plan. he wants to put $10 billion into schools. 11billion would go to help pay down an estimated 25 billion in

debt from the past decade. 815million would go towards overdue maintenance at parks, schools, on roads and other public facilities. and the governor included a $1.6 billion rainy day fund for any future economic problems. now, the budget surplus will play a by egg role in the governor's plan to prepare for earthquakes. the governor says there's a good chance someplace in the state will be hit with an earthquake. we had a quake in 1989. that's why he calling for a big increase in funding for a program to map out high risk fault lines all over california. he's asking for a million and a half dollars in new money for the next fiscal year. the state's geology budget has fallen from 9 million in 2001 to 3 million for the current foreclosure. it is 8:39. the san francisco 49ers will have just one more practice this morning before flying to charlotte for sunday's playoff game against the carolina

gold health before he caught the flu. a new report out on the data breach at a target store says it may have affected millions more customers than first thought. target now says the phone numbers and e-mails of as many as 70 million customers were stolen in the days before christmas. earlier target said 40 million customers were affected by that data breach. and just about 2 hours ago, a man was killed in a motorcycle crash on interstate 580 in oakland. the chp is now investigating whether this was a hit-and-run. ktvu's tara moriarty is near the scene. that collision has caused a major back up in the morning commute tara. what's it like out there now? >> reporter: well, you know, we just spoke to the chp and got an update from them and they don't know really if this was indeed a hit-and-run. now, we do know that the traffic has gotten worse over the past two hours. it is now backed up past keller avenue, almost all the way to

san leandro. the good news is call transis on the scene, and they are -- caltrans is on the scene, and they are getting ready to open up the freeway. a helmet lay on the freeway for 2 hours. a sad sign that the male motorcyclist lost his life. the chp says just before 6:30. the motorcyclist went down for some unknown reason, perhaps he was clipped by the another car. we're not sure. then a man driving a dark suv ran over him, killing him. the chp says the driver did stop and was pretty shaken up. he was taken in for questioning, but now the chp needs your help tracking down another car. >> it is under investigation. he was traveling for some reason went down. after he went down he was subsequently hit by another vehicle. we are looking for a blue chevy silverado to question, who may or may not be involved. it's all still under investigation! now, we again are on 580 westbound, just before the 80

split. officers say that the suv that you saw earlier crashed spot motorcycle and it could take traffic some time to get back to normal. cars backed up past keller, use 880 to get through the maze and avoid 580 at all costs, as you can see, we are in the final stages of clearing. it's just about to be completely open. it had only been open two lanes, and now looks like everything will be restored to normal. live from the emeryville oakland border, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. 8:47. as i mentioned earlier, new numbers just out this morning are painting a dismal picture of the job market. ktvu's pam cook is in our news room with today's report and the urging from one congressman. good morning pam. >> good morning, the unemployment rate dropped in december. that news may sound encouraging at first, but economists say it is misleading. employers added 74,000 jobs in december, which is the worst monthly number in nearly 3 years and well below what

economists forecast. the unemployment rate dropped to 6.7%. but again, that is due to ashing work force. now, a record 91.8 million people are not participating in the work force, meaning they have given up looking for a job. that also means they are not counted in the unemployment rate. the official jobless rate includes only those people it actively searching for a new job. now, economists say a broader measure of unemployment that includes discouraged and underemployed workers is more than 13%. now, weather did play a role in some of the problems for december. this morning's report says 273,000 people were not able to work because of the cold temperatures across the country in december. that is above the 5 year average. many of those jobs are in construction. now, the news this morning could affect the plan by senate democrats to resume long-term unemployment benefits. >> i just hope my colleagues on

both side will remember that the measure of a compassion is not how long we provide unemployment benefits but how soon we get people into good paying jobs. >> now senate majority leader harry reid pushed for a reworked version of extending benefits, but blocked republicans from making any changes. the dispute threatens to stall the legislation. that was that test vote we talked about this week. the big debate is over how to pay for the program and where to cut. another senate vote is tentative tentatively schedule for next week. now, something else that could hurt the job market going forward, disappointing holiday sales for the retailers. macy's, as we have been reporting has already announced job cuts and sears could be next, after reporting a dismal 4 4th quarter this morning. sales down nearly 7 1/2 percent. one analyst this morning says sears is in crisis mode.
