. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. want for questioning, investigators released a sketch of a person of interest in a troubling arson case that now includes ten suspicious fires. >> good evening, i'm ken pritchett in for ken wayne. >> i'm heather holmes. the fires have roared through variation locations in downtown san josi. the latest fire in this unsettling string was set just this morning. so far only property has been damaged, but some fear that this will change if this brazen arsonist strikes again. this is a sketch of the suspected firebug that

officials are hoping to catch the suspect. and talking about the similars between the fire. >> reporter: the arsonist has struck a church, commercial building and several residences like this overnight. authorities think he is sticking to an area he knows well, striking in the overnight hours and using ordinary debrises to start the fire. they released this sketch. he has been spotted on surveillance video near several of the scenes and investigators say he looks familiar to the video obtained by ktvu. >> just hope he is going to be contained quickly. >> reporter: until then neighbors are taking action, clearing debris and anything that might burn. >> we're going to be vigilant and watching. >> it makes you stay up at night and wondering if it could be me? >> reporter: there have been ten fires from downtown san josi, eight

confirmed arson, the most recent a home on east st. john. this man rescued the two people trapped inside. >> i feel good, because they are my neighbors. >> reporter: with more fires between 2:00 6:00 a.m., authorities fear others may not be so lucky. this arson investigator asked we not show his face, but say the fires are similar, started with ordinary debris and without accelerants. >> we have had newspapers put in through a mail slot or inside of a building and set on fire. >> reporter: he says the arsonist seems to be evolving. last night venturing outside of his normal area, but with each fire they hope for more clues and a better understanding of what makes him tick. >> like revenge and spite, there are people that do it for economic reasons. some people have mental illness. i don't know what is causing this person to want to light fires. >> reporter: authorities want the public's help and now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading

to an arrest and conviction in this case. live in san josi, ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. here again is a sketch of the person investigators want to question. he is described as white or latinor, 25-40 years old between 6'and 6'2". he has a thin build and weighs about 160-180 pounds, but investigators say he may be wearing baggy clothing and glasses to conceal his identity. in san josi, police continue to look for a suspect and the motive in the city's second homicide of the year. investigators say a man was reported lying on the sidewalk at willow glen way near the al medin expressway with stab wounds. police say the victim's identity won't be released his his family is notified. staying in san josi, the highway patrol is investigating the death of a pedestrian on interstate 60. the chairperson says it's not

clear why, but the victim was was hit by a driver who left the scene. the victim was then struck by a taxi, the cabdriver stopped and called for help. the man's name has not been released. well, now to our very dry bay area winter that today finally, finally included a little rain. drizzle is probably a little more accurate. >> right. this is what it looks like in downtown san francisco this afternoon. while a little more than a mist or drizzle, the umbrellas came out and the windshield wipers were turned on. >> that same weather system brought snow to the sierras. skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes during the first measurable snowfall for the tahoe area in several areas. >> ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo is here with the small rain totals, but, you know what? we'll take it. >> we have been talking about the front over the past couple of days. really not generous are the rainfall total and, in fact, some neighborhoods not even

measurable amounts. here is the latest on live stormtracker 2. going back in time, you can see basically just a cloud-producer and even a few scattered very light showers across the region. the latest right now as you notice the main cloud bed to the south and east. the live doppler sweeps trying to pick up additional rainfall, but that is not the case. just a few clouds developing to the north. we were advertising the system to be mostly a rainfall producer in the north bay and that verified nicely. san francisco only picking up mt. 01". targeting parts of the north bay, you can see most of the amounts toward oxi dental, .3 erin and all of that activity shifting to the south and east. we have a changing weather pattern. coming up, timing the gusty winds in the hills and we'll have that latest in the newscast. a reminder you can follow mark and the rest of our ktvu weather team on-line for the latest on the conditions

outside. they are posting updates to twitter and facebook even when we are not on the air. concerns about the flu led to crowded bay area clinics today. health overtimes are trying to provide a flu shot to everyone who wants it after the flu was declared widespread here in california. across the country, people ages 18 to 64 account for more than 60% of reported hospitalized cases. coming up a little bitter later at 10:30, the changes being made here in the bay area to meet growing demand. a cousin of oscar grant will reportedly receive $125,000 as a settlement from the city of oakland after being shot by an oakland police officer. tony jones was shot in the back trying to run away from police who said they saw his vehicle at an armed robbery. jones was convicted of the robbery, but he sued the city for $10 million claiming police used unreasonable force. the chronicle reports that the settlement is expected to be approved later this month. people gathered in san

francisco today to honor lives lost to violence in the past year. the second annual prayer walk for peace wound through the city's mission district this morning. the memorial is organized by the archdiocese of san francisco. marchers carried 50 crosses to remember those killed in 2013. speakers told the crowd that the time to take action is now. >> don't wait until violence comes to our house, because it could be a bullet that hits you in the middle of a street when you are driving. it could be anybody, anywhere. >> throughout the year the archdiocese's restorative justice ministry organizes the prayer service at the site of a homicide. hopes for a playoff game at candlestick park well they died tonight when the seahawks won. so it's so long to the stick.

their neighbor's place is burning. >> i really didn't think that sort of thing would happen. >> reporter: two people died in the small one story home built 65 years ago. a fire station is right down the street, but arriving crews found the house already engulfed. a fire that started suddenly and moved swiftly. >> this kitchen window blew out, flames shooting high. it appears that the kitchen was where the fire started. >> i talked to them maybe a month or two ago. >> reporter: the resident was a man in his 50s with health problems of he didn't go out much. >> heard he was a vietnam vet. >> reporter: a caregiver apparently lived with him, but the neighbor himself was quiet, reclusive. >> i think the family owned the house for decades. i don't know, but i would have assumed he grew up there. >> reporter: neighbors are shocked and saddened at the lives lost, but also very relieved that the fire didn't spread. >> i was pretty worried, yeah, yeah. i have never seen a fire that

close. >> reporter: police and fire investigators are holding off on examining the house until tomorrow, because it is safer to be in and to breathe in after it has settled for a bit. reporting live in palo alto, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. today we learned the name of a man who died in a house fire last night in unincorporated walnut creek. he has been identified as 62- year-old charles mcdonald. crews responded to the fire on hilltop cressent near spring side road at about 9:30 p.m. mcdonald's body was found on the second floor of the home. a woman inside was able to escape. it took firefighters about half an hour to get the fire under control. investigators searching for an armed bank robber on the peninsula are hoping a distinctive piece of clothing might give him away. they released this surveillance photo of the suspected robber,

wearing a cap with a zebra print trim. sheriff's deputies say he pointed a gulp at teller at chase bank on south el camino in millbrae yesterday afternoon. he is described as a thin black man, about 5'6" tall. bad weather heavennered efforts to recover the body of a bay area man and his family who died in a plane crash last month in the mountains of idaho. software engineer dale smith and his son and daughter-in-law were killed. yesterday a private search team including smith's brother found the plan of local authorities plan to meet monday to consider ways to recover the wreckage. an online petition calling on contra costa prosecutors to drop a battery charge against a transgender teen now has more than 20 arson semiconductors. ,000 signatures. 16-year-old jewlyes gutierrez

who identifies as female says she was being harassed by other students. the school suspected all of the students involved, but the district attorney charged om jewlyes with battery. the da would not explain his decision because jewlyes is a minor. but jewlyes told cnn today that she was "forced to fight back." >> i was only protecting myself, because i feel like i was getting provoked, harassed and bullied to the buoyant where i had a breaking point and i just snapped. >> her sister setup the petition on change.org asking the district attorney to drop the charge. a southern california legislator wants to provide affordable healthcare insurance to undocumented people. saying that if the goal is universal health care, immigration status should be irrelevant. the los angeles times reported

flat rate, but that rate would also rise. the cpuc is expected to vote on the plan later this year. it could take full effect by 2018. luxury retailer neiman marcus is sending letters to customers that the store believes were affected by a security breach. the dallas-based company confirmed the breach today saying thieves stole credit card and debit card data during the holiday season. so far the breach appears to have only affected in-store sales. neiman marcus is the second major retailer hit by holiday identity theft folding target's data loss in december. hayward recruited employees during a job fair. hundreds attended the event this morning at hayward city hall. the human resources ct. says after a hiring freeze during the recession, the city is finally looking to fill critical jobs, such as fire, police and water service. >> revenues are getting better, expenditures are still there and outpacing the revenues, but we now we need to serve the community. >> hiring can take up to 90 days and although the city

. now to our continuing coverage of the deadly flu season. 11 people have died in the bay area of flu-related illnesses. as ktvu's john sasaki reports, as word is spreading of the deaths in some cases of otherwise young, healthy people, the number of those seeking vaccinations is rapidly increasing. >> reporter: this is marian community clingics in san rafael, crowded today because many people wanted the flu shot to battle h1-n1. >> concerned of what they are hearing and that the flu -- everybody is seeing it in the schools. >> reporter: had was a weekly flu shot clinic for kids, but with this wee's report of deaths, including the death of a 23- year-old healthy man, parents have now asked for the shots. so the clinic is now open to adults. >> they were concerned about

their children and now that they are seeing it's affecting that age, they are getting them themselves. >> reporter: the entire gonzalez family got their flu shots because of a new addition, a baby girl three weeks ago. 11-year-old francisco said it was a breeze. at the whistle stop center, another flu clinic for families. >> the flu season got off to an ominous start and we're encouraging people to get vaccinated because the season will be more virulent than ever. >> i would like to say, your flu shot is not jut for you, but your loved ones. >> reporter: conscience brought his two kids and all three were vaccinated. >> they are saying it's a bad epidemic in the east coast and midwest, where we have family and just trying to stay ahead of it and get the flu shot. >> reporter: at whistle stop locations 70 people got their flu shots

today, but health officials say smoking-related illnesses still kill more than 440,000 americans every year. tempters continue to flare in west virginia where a while leak has kept 300,000 people from using water for the past three days. interest has been a run on bottled water and water from fema is being handed out as an emergency measure. at least five people have now been hospitalized. a chemical used to process coal spilled into the river, could be tam nateing the water supply. there is no time estimate on how long it will take to flush the water system of that contaminant. san pablo police say 2013 was the city's first year without a single homicide in 27 years. the east bay city says other violent crime also drained, rape down 57%, robberies were down 30% and aggravated assault fell 1% last year. police credit the use of

technology, such as surveillance cameras, also along with the community involvement for helping to reduce violent crime in the city. there were seven homicides in 2012. nationally park officials have extended deadline for comment on a controversial plan for dogs at recreational areas; notre including crissy field and muir beach. the recreation area requires leashes in some areas where dogs run free now. congresswoman nancy pelosi worked with dog owners to get the deadline extended to february 18th. >> the first major retailer to accept a virtual currency called bitcoin says it racked up more than $125,000 in sales in just the first 24 hours. interstate retailer over stock.com said it took in sales.

. we've been talking about today's weak system in a moved into the bay area. not much a productive rain producer and not a rain producer for the south bay, just lots of cloud conch for san josi. we're looking for more rain, but that is not the case right now with partly cloudy skies. some patchy fog developing in santa rosa, reporting three-quarters of a mile visibility. showing you the marine map because we have a building swell offshore. can you see some of the estimated wave highlights and this energy will be approaching our coachline. shoreline. so just be extra careful. the niners in charlotte and no rain clouds and, in fact, mostly sunny for the forecast as you can see for tomorrow. temperatures mainly in the 50s, remember last week in green bay, with the wind chills below zero? that is not the case for

tomorrow. lots of 50s. back in the bay area, some fog developing, that will be a factor for tomorrow; here is your live camera looking out towards city hall. you can see the niners' colors and at 7:00 tomorrow morning, 46 degrees in san francisco. by 3:00, on track to reach the lower 60s. monday, tuesday and wednesday, we'll clear out the clouds and temperatures do warm up. in fact, we're talking about low 70s for that timeframe. low 70s. overnight lows tomorrow morning will be in the mid-30s for santa rosa, napa, patchy low clouds across the bay. and some of the forecast models hinting at clearing in the afternoon hours. our rain was a snow producer in the sierra. you can see the accumulations, snowfall amounts on the order of 3-4" with even chain controls on 80 and 50. in snow advisories in the
