good morning. we are live in west oakland where a bart union vote is scheduled to take place a couple hours from now. what it means for bart riders and other hearing that could end future bart strikes all together. residents still nervous this morning. what they are doing to help catch a suspected arsonist. and 49er fans excited about moving forward in the playoffs but not about what the sea hawks are doing to keep them from watching the game in person. ktvu morning news continues. thank you for joining us. monday morning january 13th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve knows all object our forecast. good morning. >> i hope so. it looks very mild to warm. we are starting with an offshore breeze. that will take us through tonight and even tomorrow and possibility of record highs. there could be a few today. kentfield and st. helena definitely flirting. north to east breeze and that means windy conditions. higher elevations mainly taking the brunt of it. that will take us through tonight. probably tonight and maybe tomorrow. oakland though when you get that pattern starting off 45 downtown oakland will be close to 70 degrees today. 52 walnut creek. 53 in oakland. there are temps that are pretty mild to warm. it wouldn't take much. you can see that offshore breeze. 16 miles an hour. it will be clear and sunny and nice and breezy. warming up here pretty fast. back to a dry forecast. maybe for awhile. maybe for the rest of the month. 60s to 70 degrees. here is tara. thanks. in san jose we have a two-car crash on 101 northbound at the

allen rock avenue off ramp. the chp said it was a three-car crash but it is just a two. now at the bay bridge we have a large cargo van blocking the flow lane on 80 eastbound at treasure island. so hopefully this won't cause too many problems. it looks like its pretty clear as you make your way into san francisco. finally highway 4 traffic flowing very nicely. the headlights westbound toward concord. let's head back to the desk. right now san jose fire crews at the scene of a house fire this morning. this one started 30 minutes ago at peacock gap drive. its not clear yet if this was related to the recent arson in san jose but this fire is seven miles from the area where fires have been section intentionally set. ktvu news has a crew on the way. we'll bring you the latest information on this. this fire comes as the neighborhood just miles away is

still on high alert this monday morning. during the night people started -- people being targeted by an arsonist was working in shifts. we're also hitting the local fire stations picking up smoke detectors. there have been 13 fires set during the middle of the night. most have been small fires. no one has been hurt. downtown people have been alarmed enough to stay awake and keep their eyes peeled for the arsonist to strike again. >> we certainly don't want anyone to apprehend this individual. it could be mentally unstable. so we want people to be safe but vigilant. >> now you are looking add surveillance videos here for the past five days showing a young dark haired man in the vicinity of some of the fires. there is now a sketch of a person of interest. take a look at this. and a $10,000 reward offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist. 49ers back home in the bay area getting ready for the big

nfc championship game. our ktvu cameras were there with a lot of fans when the team arifed back at 49ers headquarters last night. the niners arrived by charter buses after flying into san jose from charlotte north carolina. now the 49ers home coming came after another exciting victory on the road. the niners now heading to the nfc championship for the third season in a row after their victory in north carolina. collincap ere nick ran for one touchdown. throw for another. the niners are now looking ahead to sunday and their championship game show down with the seattle sea hawks. >> good thing is its not our first rodeo. we have all experienced it up there. we are excited about the opportunity. this will be the old river match. what a better team to go

against. >> the sea hawks getting there after beating the new orleans saints. the sea hawks are making it hard for the 49ers fans to buy tickets for the game. the sea hawks announced they won't be selling tickets for the champion shape game for anyone with a california address. many 49ers fans we talked to are not happy about it. in fact, this attempt to keep them out of seattle's century link field. >> what kind of offense is that? are they afraid of the niners nation? >> the sea hawks say they are excluding california fans to prevent tickets scalping. but many 49ers fans don't buy that story. the stub hub website have more than 6600 tickets for next sunday's game. last time we checked the cheapest ticket was $464. they ran as high as $122,000

for a seat near the ends zone. stub hub is where fans sell tickets to other fans. you can watch sunday's big game right here on channel 2 ktvu. kickoff for the nfc championship 3:30 p.m.. winner of sunday's 49ers sea hawks game heads to new jersey for the super bowl. the long and bitter battle between bart and its unions expected to end today. starting at 8:00 this morning workers are scheduled to ratify the contract that should keep trains running for a few years. ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores in oakland this morning with more on what is expected today. brian. >> reporter: it took two strikes and nine months to get to this point. as you mentioned union workers are expected to vote on this and approve this latest contract and stay away from strikes that cripple thed the tran -- crippled the transit system. this is for service employees

international. the other union in this endorsed the contract last week. the unions i.eed to drop the controversial mistake of paid family leave clause. but the new contract will -- and up to $500 in bonuses. now the other calf yacht to this is whether workers should be allowed to strike at all. also happening today state lawmakers will take up that issue. the bill would prop hit such strikes to happen in the future. transit workers should be compared to firefighters and police and they provide an essential service. now the two bart strikes in july and october forced some 400,000 daily coming up we hope

to talk to bart riders to see what they think about when this contract will be approved. brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. investigators try to determine the cause of a deadly house fire in palo alto. yesterday they arrived back at the home on embarcadero road. the investigation into friday's fire was delayed because the structure was considered unstable. two bodies were discovered inside that home. think names not -- their names have not been released. a fire in walnut creek destroyed a carport and came dangerously close to a row of townhouses. it started at 7:00 last night. firefighters say when they arrived it was committeely engulfed into flame completely engulfed into flames. time is 6:08.

state health officials say more people have died from the flu. the latest death is reported yesterday. now the state's total is more than 30 deaths. here in the bay area 11 people have died from the flu so far this season. the most concerning strain this year is the h1n1 virus. doctors say they don't believe the flu will match the 2009 pandemic. it killed more than 600,000 people in california. and as the number of deaths related to the flu keeps rising. more people are rushing out trying to get vaccinated. but a lot of bay area 4079s and pharmacies are reporting a temporary shortage. well this weekend flu shot clinics were packed with people. some even had lines going out the door. many hospitals and businesses are hoping to get more flu shots arriving either today or sometime this week. target's chief executive officer promises there will be big changes after last month's massive cyber attack. the company is responsible for the problem and he adds an

investigation reveals mall ware was installed. he says no one will rest until target knows exactly how that happened. he also says he is personally sorry for the data theft that may effect as many as 110 million customers. we've been talking about this story for awhile. the commuter buss have been using muni bus stops free of charge. but a proposed new 18 month plan would charge the shuttle buses $1 per stop every day. a spokesperson for the commission says they like the idea of people riding public transportation but are still debating if this idea is the best one. san francisco voters may decide if anuses arena for the warriors could be built on the city's waterfront. critics of the arena plan are collecting signatures aimed at blocking the project. the proposed measure would require voter approval for

waterfront development that exceeds height limits. three major projects. time is 6:10. there is another recall of chicken products. this time people who could be effected may have never seen the packaging the chicken came in and may not know they are at risk. also a southwest airlines plane lands on the wrong runway. we'll hear what happened. we do have an incident out in the livermore area to tell you about coming up in traffic. and right now we will take a live look here at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see kind of a mess. a dry forecast is back. but not only that maybe a very warm forecast. possibility of record highs this week. we'll show you those coming up.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. at least one person is dead after a 21-year-old woman fell into the icy chicago river early this morning. after she went in two men went in to find her. divers did pull both men out of the hospital. one of them died at the hospital. time is 6:14. funeral services today for

former israeli prime minister ariel sharon. you are looking at new video we got in from sharon's burial next to the grave of his wife. hundreds of world leaders were there and also at a state memorial ceremony earlier in the day. ariel sharon died saturdays at the age of 85. he was in a coma for eight years following a stroke. vice president joe biden was there representing the united states. in his eulogy vice president biden said he known sharon for 30 years. called him a complex man who lived in complex times in a very complex neighborhood. foster farms has shut down the processing plant again. the u.s. department of agricultural gave up -- but foster farms closed it down yesterday. saying its continuing to work on safety procedures. the company says the voluntary

shutdowns expected to last several days. will is a recall at tyson foods. some of its chicken may be contaminated by salmonella. tyson products have been linked to salmonella outbreaks at the tennessee correction gnat facility that made at least seven people sick. the faa looking into why a southwest airlines jet landed at the wrong airport. the runway there is about half as long as the one at branson. passengers say the pilot seemed to stop that plane quickly. passengers heard the pilot on the public address system explain where they were. >> the plane has landed at an airport nearby. with that we were thinking okay there is only one other airport and it was the sea of o

airport. and we're thinking surely not a jet plane could land there. >> it did. the passengers were put on buses and driven to branson. the world's airlines had one of their safest years in 2013. there were 29 airline accidents last year with a record low 265 deaths. that compares to 475 deaths from airline accidents in 2012 which was also considered a safe year. both years represented a dramatic drop from the ten year average of 720 airline deaths every year. that is out of an average 31 million commercial flights around the world every year. two u.s. senators say a federal rail safety agency wants a new rule about the installation of video cameras on trains. senators charles schumer of new york say they have been told by the federal railroad administration they will begin the process of establishing the rule sometime this year. it would cover cameras installed in the train cabs to

record the behavior by drivers and outward facing cameras that can scan the tracks. the two senators have been urging the railroad administration to act after a deadly commuter train derailment in new york city. traffic problem in livermore. >> yeah across the altamont pass we had a car stuck in park in the number three lane. it looks like the chp just cleared it. if you take a look at our maps you can see this is 580 eastbound. you can see it has created quite a backup. give yourself extra time. and on 238 near 580 on north castro valley boulevard we have a crash as well that has been moved over to the shoulder. in milpitas highway 237 not looking too bad at this hour. taillights are westbound. and finally at the bay bridge toll plaza the metering lights

are on. 6:18 let's head to steve. good morning. we have record highs possible this week. keptfield san rafael probably -- kentfield, san rafael probable the only ones that will be closed today. little system on saturday is long gone. it looks really quiet for the rest of the month. unless something really changes fast. we have lots of sunshine on the menu today. red flag warning is out which means the breeze is north, north east. tomorrow could be really warm. there is possibility of mid to upper 70s. on wednesday a dry breezy forecast. warmer monday. temperatures 60s low 70s. mainly 60s today. i think there will be a couple low 70s as the pattern looks very dry. unseasonally warm. we will go 70 in downtown

oakland. 40s and 50s on the techs. 51 redwood city. some areas are already in the mid 50s and low 50s. offshore breeze to 16 miles an hour at the oakland airport. seattle is getting rain. it looks things will calm down. storm track is up north and stay north. if it is quiet here active weather continues great lakes. all the way down to the deep south and northeast. it has been nonstop for them. 30s for some. but sunshine and warm temps. it might be a little cool now. its not that bad. sunny and breezy. 60s and 70s. now few areas low 70s will put st. helena in there. clearlake, novato at 70. antioch is 67. only 64 livermore and 70 downtown. they usually benefit from this pattern. and santa cruz could be close

to 80. mid 60s on the coast. on the peninsula. sunny side up all the way into thursday. slight little cool down with high clouds coming in friday and saturday. and sunday looks back to dry. >> thank you, steve. 6:20 is the time. the detroit auto show gets under way today. one of the most talked about new cars is a truck. ford will unvail its newest version of the f-150 pickup. its expected to be a game changer for the entire truck market. the 2015 model will be the first pickup made of aluminum. it will make it 700 pounds lighter which will cut fuel cost. ford says it will also be harder to dent than the steel used in current models. drivers across the country paying a little more to fill their gas tanks. nationally prices average $3.35. that is up 8-cents a gallon. here in the bay area we have seen prices drop 3 cents in the last week. san francisco drivers paying

welcome back. time is 6:24. at the golden globe awards there was excitement, fun, fashion along with the awards but the night did not go exactly without a hitch. in fact, the show got off to a soggy start. look at this. a water pipe burst. damaged part of the red carpet at the beverly hilton hotel. this happened a couple hours before the stars were set to arrive. even the red carpet got wet. a sprinkler malfunctioned. the fire department was called in. they were able to cut off the water. and parts of the red carpet that got wet had to be replaced. and later on in the show the stars faced some technical problems. >> i'm not going to lie to you right now they put up the wrong stuff on the teleprompter. >> you tell them jonah hill. they were announcing clips from their movie the wolf of wall

street when the prompter went crazy. went to the wrong spot. robbie who was a first time presenter thought that was something they did only to rookies. luckily somebody came in and fixed it. some of last night's biggest winners included matthew mcconaughey for best actor. leonardo dicaprio took home his second golden globe award. one of my favorite ray may adams one for american hustle. today warriors super star steph curry will be pumping up bay area kids encouraging them to stay fit. >> this is stefan curry. i'm looking for teammates to come play ball. meet me in the gym. >> some excited kids. he is visiting oakland's recreation center this morning

to encourage 200 elementary students to stay active and eat healthy this year. they will practice basketball drills and learn about healthy snacks. the new season of american idol is back. the show almost feature a high school student from the east bay. 17-year-old rachel is a student at month vista high school. she performed an acoustic version of stay by sugar land. american idol premiers this wednesday night add 8:00. you can watch rachel's performance in part two of the two night season premier to see if she is moving on to hollywood. 6:27. more concerns over the bolts on the new bay bridge. how much cal tran says it expects to spend on just keeping an eye on the bolts and why that number could grow. the 49ers are headed to the nfc championship game in seattle this sunday. but fans that want to watch

on camino. the witnesses say the water is rising. its already flooded the parking lot and several cars. ktvu brian flores is on the way there. brian will have a live report for you coming up on mornings on 2. the 49ers one big step closer to the super bowl. they are heading to the championship for the third season in a row after their victory in north carolina. collin kaepernick ran for one touchdown, threw for another. the niners are now looking ahead to sunday and their championship game show down with the seattle sea hawks. but 49er fans hoping to see the game in person may be out of luck. ktvu alex savidge is joining us now with the red blocks set up by the sea hawks. surprised this could happen. >> yeah very surprising. the sea hawks seem to be making 49ers fans jump through hoops to attend this sunday's big game in seattle. the sea hawks are limiting

ticket sales to fans in just six states. and naturally california is not on that list. the sea hawks will begin selling face value tickets to the nfc title game. in order to buy one of the tickets the team says the credit card billing address must be in oregon, montana, idaho, alaska, hawaii, or canada. it is to give preference to sea hawk fans. and they are excluding california fans to prevent ticket scalping. some niners fans think the sea hawks are trying to improve upon that home field advantage. >> are they that afraid of the niners nation? >> so niners fans that want to head up to seattle may be forced to buy their tickets on the secondary market. that will cost them quite a bit of money. stub hub is offering more than

6,000 tickets for next sunday's nfc title game in seattle. the cheapest we saw was $460 while on the other end of the spectrum seats near the end zone are going for $122,000. of course niners fans are known for traveling to the away games. and this one obviously a big game. the nfc title game this sunday. lye this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:35. yesterday 49er fans got up early to watch that big game. starting off the day screaming. fans packed into the kizar pub in san francisco. many wearing the red and gold. some still in pajamas. they were there to enjoy what they call a breakfast of champions. as the 49ers won another big game. and bay area bars are expected to be packed again for next

fans showing off the team spirit. and don't forget you can watch sunday's big game right here on ktvu channel 2. kickoff for the nfc championship game 3:30 p.m. sunday. and the winner of sunday's 49ers sea hawk game heads to new jersey for the super bowl. should transit strikes be banned? state lawmakers will debate that today. 400,000 bart commuters were effected by strikes in july and october. republican leader bob huff has already introduced a bill banning transit strikes. comparing transit workers to police and firefighters who are banned from striking. now it took two strikes and nine months to settle bart's latest dispute. that bitter battle is finally ended today. voting begins at 8:00 this morning. barts union workers already ratified a deal in november but the bart board rejected the contract after discovering a

costly family leave provision had been mistakenly included. a man in his 70s escaped without injury after jumping in front of a bart train. it happened yesterday afternoon at the downtown berkeley station. witnesses say he jumped right in front of the train and was able to crawl out from underneath it. the incident closed the station for about 40 minutes. time is 6:37. problems with bolts on the bay bridge racking up big bills. the san francisco chronicle says cal tran will spend $10 million this year to keep an eye on those bolts and that number is expected to grow. the bolt problem first started in march when a third of the 96 rods used on the new span of the bay bridge cracked when they were tightened. cal tran says they still need to assess whether bolts on the bridge are defective and may be in danger of failing. police in east palo alto are investigating a shooting that left a man recovering from being a shot in the head. this happened about 1:45 yesterday afternoon on pahl low

verdie avenue. the victim was an 1-year-old man from east palo alto. police describe the wound as super official if you have any information get in contact with east palo alto police. so far no arrests have been made. today a community task force is set to meet in sonoma county to discuss the use of deadly force by police. it was put together after the fatal shooting of andy lopez by a sheriffs deputy. the task force will meet once a week and come up with recommendations. they include procedures for reviewing officer involved shooting. suggestions for community policing. z this morning the two men blamed for the shooting death of an oakland girl are due back in court. she was at a friends house last summer in july when someone knocked on the front door and started shooting. darnell williams and joseph

carroll were arrested. prosecutors say they were targeting the father of her friend 25-year-old york. prosecutors say earlier that day york shot and killed a friend of williams. time 16:39. a national program credited with helping to bring hundreds of missing children home safely is being recognized today. today is national amber alert awareness day. when a child goes missing the emergency system notifies the public through highway message lines, wireless alert systems, and the social media. the california highway patrol says the state system has been activated 218 times and helped in the recory of 255 children since it started 12 years ago. the program was named for nine- year-old amber. she was kidnapped in texas in 1996 she was later found murdered. a 15-year-old from san jose is heading to sochi. she won the silver medal at the

figure skating national championships. if she had been born six weeks later she would not have been eligible. she is a sophomore at san jose high school. she has trained at shark heist in san jose since she was four years old. >> way to go. >> congratulations. time is 6:40. praying for rain. the reason a group of people from northern california say they felt the need to get down on their hands and knees. a south bay neighborhood taking action. what they are doing in hopes of catching a suspected arsonist who is accused of setting more than a dozen fires. traffic is a nightmare at the bay bridge toll plaza. but we do have good news for you. i've been talking to mother nature and she is mad at me. i said we need rain. she said you will get record highs and like it.

over night people in san jose took action against an arsonist. janine de la vega has been talking with people who took action as lookouts to protect their homes. j nine. >> reporter: pam us this is nerve rack for those that live in this neighborhood. they want to protect and end. so do the police department and fire department. they are on the lookout for this man that you see in this sketch that was released over the weekend. they have been staying up in

the overnight hours looking for him. let's go to video we have earlier. a neighborhood watch has been set up in the downtown area that has experienced 13 fires in the past five days. 11 have been confirmed arson. two are suspicious. this has frightened people here in the area. no one has been injured so far but homes, business, and church they have been damaged and these actions this person setting the fire has prompted the neighborhood to mobilize. people have signed up to stay awake in two hour shifts to be on the lookout for the suspects. one of the fire victims has spoken to us this morning. an he actually told us he is staying up all night. >> the whole neighborhood is terrified. the fact they are hitting they hit our house and the house across the street a day or two later. it sames to be pretty brazen.

they last paid dividends on may 2008. the american car maker has been showing signs of financial strengths since 2009 when it i americaed from bankruptcy. but also says its not saying when it will start paying shareholders again. a mall in milpitas could soon have a new look. the city council is being asked to approve plans near interstate 880. the new project would have an asian theme and as many as 300 small shops. store owners would be encouraged to buy their individual shops rather than rent them. time is 6:56. pg&e warning about a nation- wide scam. people around the country saute are getting suspicious calls and e-mails that look like they are coming from pg&e. they look like bills and they ask for account information. but its not just pg&e customers that are targeted. this is also targeting people outside of the service area. >> i have had issues with it even on business account.

i have to be really diligent and watch for -- i've had false charges. people trying to scam our account. >> pg&e says don't respond to those e-mails and avoid opening any lengths attached to the e- mails. pg&e is working with law enforcement trying to get to the bottom of that situation. postcard program in san francisco is trying to combat the city's stereotypes and tell positive stories. the postcard project was created last spring. participants in some of san francisco's toughest neighborhoods fill out a postcard and share a positive story about their neighborhood. the postcard is mailed at random to another san francisco resident who may live in somewhat more affluent area. >> people are much more similar than they realize if they take the time to actually listen to each others stories. >> frank created the project while working in the mayor's office of innovation. since last spring 334 postcards have been sent in san
