the time being. they have to wait for an electrician to go out there and neutralize those wires. you see one of the paramedic vehicles is leaving with someone who was injured. this is east 80 at the mccarthur maze. all the lanes are closed and we don't know when it will be opened. let's go out and take a look at interstate 80 westbound the bay bridge. westbound traffic here looks good. and westbound 580 from livermore to pleasanton that traffic is off to a good start. let's go back to the desk. police remain at a home in san francisco where the bomb squad detonated a suspicious device. >> reporter: the explosion could be heard for blocks. they still have a police presence out here on 46th

avenue. part of it is blocked off here at judah. there is a lot of glass in the roadway there. the store that we will be showing you to the left, this is one that sustained some damage when the devices were blown up. what happened was some people living next door thought they found some old explosives next door and the homeowner had recently died. so the family was clearing the place out. so around 8:45 last night the bomb squad decided its best option was to blow up the devices. the neighbors were evacuated but the blast did damage one place. >> an explosion. like a heard fire work. the explosion and then we heard the echo. we didn't know what it was. >> so i'm going to guess you walked outside snap >> yeah. >> reporter: the explosion sparked a one-alarm fire crews

quickly snuffed out and no one hurt in the blast. now muni is back to normal but again 46th avenue right at judah still blocked off here. we don't know how long police will be here. we've been asking but no one is asking any questions just yet. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning milpitas police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. it happened around 10:30 last night at the executive inn hotel. police found the victim in the parking lot of that hotel suffering from gunshot wounds. >> there was some kind of altercation but we are not sure who the players are or what the argument was about. >> police have not made any arrests but are interviewing guests. a pedestrian was struck and killed. just after 1:00 a.m. police got a call about a man staggering on the eastbound lanes of keller avenue.

a few hours later they got a call that the man was hit. the driver did stop and is cooperating with investigators. bay area health officials are identifying two more deaths from the h1n1. san mateo county reported its third flu death but gave no information about that death there. there have been a total of 17 deaths from the flu in the bay area. meantime elm wood correctional facility in milpitas is limiting the movement of his inmates after three confirmed h1n1 flu cases there. there are also 11 more suspected cases. no visitors are being allowed into the effected areas expect for inmate attorneys. inmates in the effected areas are required to stay in their housing area but they will be

transported to court appearances. >> inmate that has any flu like symptoms that wants a flu shot, we will give it to them. >> the santa clara county sheriffs department says they will reevaluate the situation friday morning to see if it will lift its restrictions. it is asking all visitors to call ahead of time. a fire that burned homes on an island in antioch. three homes were destroyed and at least 40 acres burned. no one was hurt but four people did have to be evacuated. neighbors fought those flames until firefighters arrived. >> this one pretty good until one of the neighbors had a big i don't know how many gallon propane tank. as you can see there coast

guard helicopter was brought in to fight that fire. and fire danger was remain high in the bay area thanks to the warmer than normal temperatures. a red flag warning is in effect until tomorrow morning in the north bay mountains and east bay hills. it is very rare for a red flag warning to be issued in the middle of january but firefighters say lack of rain has led to very dry brush and conditions we usually see in september and october. ktvu has obtained surveillance video of a man setting fire in a neighborhood plagued by arsons. it shows a man setting fire to the front porch. and then he comes back three different times until that fire spreads. and then a suspect walking near one of the homes that catches fire. >> we lost our cat. they didn't get out. they were probably hiding. i would hide if i was a cat. >> san jose police now taking

the lead in this joint fire and police investigation. there have been 13 arsons. none in the past couple days. a plea hearing is scheduled in alameda county for former junior golf coach accused of molesting three male students. andrew was arrested last month. police say the 31-year-old livermore resident admitted he committed lewd acts on his students. he now faces more than 60 child molestation charges. meantime david douglas the man accused of kidnapping a seven- year-old girl from her antioch home is due back in court today. this is videofrom his first appearance last week. prosecutors say on january 3rd douglas followed the girl and her mother home from a walmart and then abducted the girl. they were found about four hours laters at the antioch marina. he is currently being charged with six felonies and facing life in prison if convicted. this morning nurses at the

summit medical center will walk a picket line to protest recent layoffs and program cut backs. they announced if plans to lay off 358 employees and close a skilled nursing facility. the hospital says the cuts are necessary to return all debates to financial health. nurses say the hospital is already short staffed and the layoffs will negatively effect patient care. the nurses are scheduled to picket today from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. they still don't know why a 12-year-old boy opened fire at his middle school injuring two students. he shot and injured a 13-year- old girl and 11-year-old boy. both are still in the hospital. a teacher ran up to the boy and convinced him to put down the gun. >> it breaks your heart to see these kids have to witness this. >> a vigil was held last night

for the two students that were shot. there are reports that the student that carried out the shooting was being bullied at the school. and he may have warned some students not to go to school yesterday. classes at the school have been canceled today but counselors are available to talk to students. buyer beware. officials from both camps warn the purchases -- the products you purchase may be fake. some contain dangerous substances like arsonist and urine. monster beverage corporation is in the cross hairs of a new joint investigation. herrera filed a lawsuit saying

the company misbranded their drink and targeted minors. time is 4:39. it was five years ago today danville pilot sully sullenberger landed on the water. a flock of geese damaged the jets engines. sullenberger successful emergency landing became known as the miracle on the hudson. all 155 passengers survived and the plane is on display at a museum in north carolina. sullenberger now retired as a pilot is in new york today to commemorate the fifth anniversary along with other members on the flight crew and some of the passengers. american idol premiers tonight. jennifer lopez, keith urban,

we are learning more information about a tam pam police officer accused of killing a man over a texting dispute at a movie. she was texting in a theater when the 71-year-old suspect started glaring at her and continued to throughout the film. when she went to the restroom she says he followed her and made her extremely uncomfortable. >> just upset about the whole situation and kept staring and giving us dirty looks. >> he faces a charge of second degree murder. he is accused of arguing with

the victim chad olson about texting in the theater. olson threw a bag of popcorn at the thief and shot him. 4:45. police in san jose are investigating the city's third homicide in the first two weeks of the new year. a man was shot and killed around 5:30 yesterday afternoon. police say they responded to several reports of shots fired. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. so far police have not released any information about the suspects of the victim. potentially dangerous chemicals including asbestos and led are being cleaned out of a building. the chemicals were detected at the science building. school officials have locked that building until the toxins are cleaned up. the cleanup should be complete before classes start back up on january 27th. as the 49ers prepare to face off with the sea hawks, fans are prepared to show their

who boarded their dogs at pet smart knowing they would be out of town. >> gift cards, electronics, jewelry. ultimately anything they could steal it seems they took. >> kirk and her husband have pled not guilty. they remain behind bars on $500,000 bail. police are looking for the man who exposed himself to high school cheerleaders. it happened monday night. investigators say a man wearing no clothes walked into a locker room and exposed himself to several girls who were changing after cheer leading practice. >> made some gestures to us and we just got scared. >> he didn't say anything. he was just standing there staring at us. >> i didn't yell because i thought maybe he would come at us. >> the girls say the naked man left without saying anything. he is described as a white man around 40 years old. 5'10" with an average build.

he is balding with short brown hair and has a pot belly. a stanford graduate has sued -- she is from malaysia and attended stanford on a student visa. her case is the first to go to trial over the no fly list. the case began in 2005. she was arrested after san francisco international airport while on her way home to malaysia. she was told she could not return. the judge ruled that the government made a mistake and allowed her to reapply for reentry. target may not be the only company who pays for the huge data breach. companies that process credit card payments may also be sued and fined. that may include mastercard and visa. anxious winter season in
