freeway. the critical question the chp is trying to answer. fire on an island in the sacramento del tall. what investigators -- delta. what investigators are saying about how this fire may have started. >> reporter: the 49ers say they fixed a parking problem at the new levi stadium in sacramento. how the team was able to secure more spaces and how this may mean more nationally televised games. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." there's still crime scene tape up in one part of a san francisco neighborhood. that's after a suspicious device was blown up. ktvu's tara moriarty has been out there since 4:30 this morning. she'll have more on this investigation coming up. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. let's talk about the weather and traffic. steve is right over there. >> we have clear skies and pretty good breeze coming off the oakland/berkeley hills. it will be very warm. record hfd setting warm.

we had that tuesday. looks like more of the same today. oakland, the record is 75, 2005. we're going 74. it will be close for san francisco as well and many other locations. the big news, the tremendous spread between the 20, 30s, 40s, 50s, even 60s. along the embarcadero we had 61 to 63. it's been really warm for some. red flag warning continues, as you might expect. some inland temperatures are very, very cole. everything goes up and over the big dome of high pressure. windy. some of the higher elevations. that red flag takes us until thursday. that means warm temperatures. 60s and 70s. we still have a couple problems for this morning's commute. one of them being in the caldecott. another one in san jose. we have slow traffic along northbound 101. we don't see any new crashes but we see slow traffic along the way. by the way, 280 is a better bet in case you are looking for an

alternate route. 87 has cleared under after earlier problems. let's talk about the commute at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's about a 15-minute wait. another 10 on the bridge. the drive time is about 25 minutes. just a little bit under a half- hour to make the drive. i want to show a trouble spot here in the bay area commute. that would be westbound 24. the accident that was there. it seemed pretty minor has not been cleared. now we have a big backup getting into the caldecott tunnel out of orinda and la fayette. one of the lanes is blocked. it wasn't a major injury crash. they've issued a sig-alert for the area. this is bad news for 24 westbound. if you drive from walnut creek or that part into oakland, give yourself an extra 15 or 20 minutes if you can. this commute time has been ramped up at least 10 minutes extra. 7:02. back to the desk. thank you, sal. remnants of an explosion that rocked a san francisco neighborhood can still be seen this morning and the area

remains blocked off. tara moriarty is live with a look at the damage caused when the bomb squad blew up a suspicious device. >> reporter: you can see the crime tape up. they've blocked off the section of the street. there's glass. over on the sidewalk, you can see the debris that fell from that house from the second story, chunks of stucco are missing. that's where we believe the bomb squad detonated the device. the glass goes all the way across the street. a car had its window blown out. the people next door here found what they thought might be old explosives. the homeowner recently died. his family was clearing the place out when they stumbled upon them. around 8:45 last night, the bomb squad decided to blow up the devices. neighbors were evacuated. the blast hit the sunset market shattering windows and glass bottles, knocking items off shelves and putting a hole in

the wall. >> watching "breaking bad" with my wife. my kid was on the ipad. we heard this explosion. didn't know what it was. >> reporter: the explosion sparked a one-alarm fire which crews snuffed out. no one was hurt in the blast. the area was cordoned off while muni was rerouted for hours. this is the bus station within the tape limits here. bus 18 not running through here. you can't wait for it. you have to go across the street. it just goes kind of around the block. not too much of a hassle for folks this morning. now that the sun can coming up. investigators will be able to get a better look inside and try to piece together what this was. live from san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:04. just hours ago, a pedestrian was hit and killed while walking on interstate 580 in oakland. about 1:00 this morning, the chp got a call about a man staggering on the eastbound lanes near keller avenue. three minutes later, another report came in that the man had

been hit. police say the 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver did stop and has been cooperating with the investigation. the chp closed the road for more than an hour but it is still not clear why that man was walking on the freeway. police in pacifica searching for a hit-and-run driver who killed a pedestrian. that happened shortly before 8:00 on palmetto avenue. police say the driver want ran over a -- the driver ran over a man in his 50s crossing the street. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. police say the vehicle involve was a gray or dark-colored car. may have been a monte carlo. piedmont police are asking for the public's help finding a 72-year-old woman. they have issued a silver alert for jill reese who was last seen at her piedmont home yesterday morning. reese is described as 5'6", about 128 pounds, she was last seen driving a 2013 gray lexus

and failed to show up for an appointment she had in orinda yesterday. anyone with information on her whereabouts should call piedmont police. investigators think transients at a homeless camp may have started yesterday's big fire on an island near antioch that damaged homes. this was started on lower sherman island in the sacramento del tau. the smoke was billowing over antioch in east contra costa county. three homes were destroyed. at least 40 acres burned. no one was hurt. four people did evacuate. the fire was finally knocked down around 9:00 last night. meantime, a red flag warning still in effect this morning for parts of the bay area because of the higher-than- normal fire danger. brian flores will have more details on all of that coming up at 7:30. a man accused of setting a fire at the chinese consulate in san francisco is scheduled to appear in court today for a detention hearing.

a judge had decide to -- is scheduled to decide whether bail will be granted or not. prosecutors say feng admitted to starting a fire at the consulate. he allegedly told fbi agents he was hearing voices in chinese and that's what led him to attack the consulate. the building was damaged. no one was hurt in the fire. a court hearing is scheduled this afternoon for san francisco 49ers' linebacker alton smith. he's not expected to appear in court. a judge has combined two case, one involves three assault rifles, allegedly found in smith's santa clara home in 2012. the other involves a misdemeanor dui charge last september. the 49ers say the parking shortage problem at the new levi stadium in santa clara has been fixed. alex savidge tells us that means the 49ers won't be just playing on sundays anymore. >> reporter: good morning.

the 49ers say they've found more parking and that means monday night football games here in santa clara, the team announced last night it has secured about 10,000 extra parking spots at vary businesses near the said july -- various businesses near the stadium. that should help ease traffic. there was so much concern about a parking shortage that the team decided it would not host any weeknight games during the first season. but then at last night's city council meeting, the vice president of stadium operations said that the 49ers should be able to secure more than 31,000 parking spots within walking distance of the stadium. fans will be able to park at mission college, great america, even at a golf course across the street from the stadium. 5,000 cars were actually park on the fairways at the santa clara golf and tennis club. in turn the 49ers will pay for improvements to the course, widening the cart paths so cars

can drive on them. now the plan is to host monday night and thursday games in 2015 and possibly late in the 2014 season and, of course, all of that, dra parking space means plenty of space for tailgating as well once the stadium opens. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. the chp is investigating a case of people illegally jumping out of a hot air balloon near santa rosa early yesterday morning. officers were at highway 12 and fulton road when they saw a parachutist floating toward the ground. then they spotted a hot air balloon and watched three other people jump out. jumping out of a hot air balloon is not necessarily illegal but these jumpers violated faa rules because they did not have the proper safety equipment. the chp is trying to find out the name of the hot air balloon owner who could face charges. the city of oakley may cancel its contract with the

contra costa county sheriff's department. the contra costa times reports the cost per deputy has gone up 22% over the last five years, mostly because of rising pension costs. the council is proposing to create their own police force or contract with another city for police services. it is 7:09. we've been following that big brush fire in the sacramento delta. coming up, live coverage on the rare winter-time fire danger facing many people in the bay area. a 14-year-old little leaguer near sacramento is being sued by his own coach all because of how he celebrated scoring a game-winning run. good morning. right now, we have slow traffic in some of the key commutes. northbound 280 will be slow in san jose as it is beginning to pick up there in the south bay. 24 in la fayette is slowing down. we'll tell you why. well, we have a cloud up there.

the richmond city council is considering three proposals that would give that city the highest minimum wage in the region. one plan is to raise it to 11 an hour. the other two proposals would make it $12.30 an hour or $15 an hour. one of those proposals may end up on the november ballot. right now, san francisco has the region's highest minimum wage at 10.74. in july the minimum wage goes up to $9 for the state.

the chairman of the high speed rail authority is testifying before a congressional committee. kyla campbell is joining us live on capitol hill to explain his plan for foreign funding the project. >> reporter: we've obtained a copy of dan richards's testimony. we're taking a live look at that hearing right now where richards is expected to tell them that building more roads and adding more roads in california is not an uption. he says high speed rail travels at speeds that exceed 200 miles an hour. it would attract drivers and frequent flyers who face delays between los angeles and the bay area. officials say high speed rail construction will create 100,000 jobs over the next five years. and former transportation secretary ray lahood says high- speed rail is a win-win for california. >> the connectivity across the whole state will be a boom. it will be an economic corridor. >> reporter: the trillion-

computers around the world to conduct surveillance. the targets reportedly include police and drug cartels in mexico and the russian military. some exuters are not connected -- computers are not expected to the internet. president obama is expected to announce new limitations on the nsa coming this friday, including limits on surveillance on phone records. a father from roseville is crying foul after his 14-year- old little leaguer was hit with a lawsuit for celebrating a win. during a game last spring, joe paris says his son was racing toward home plate to score the scoring run when he threw off his helmet. the man's achille's tendon was hit. he wants money for lost wages and medical bills and joe paris is stunned. >> i actually thought it was a joke at first. >> you didn't think he was

serious? >> no. >> and now? >> and now i think it's absurd. >> the former coach is not responding because of the pending lawsuit. paris says he can't keep fighting his legal action much longer. he said he's already spent $4,000 and has not even stepped into a courtroom. trial starts in march. 7:16. well, you are about to meet one parent that has definitely earned her keep. this is pearly. she's making headlines because her family in fort lauderdale, florida claims she saved their lives. turns out her squawking alerted family members to a laundry room that was on fire. >> sounded as if it was in fear for his its life. it was a really desperate scream. i thought it was tangled up in the cage and injured. i think it knew something was really wrong. >> emergency crews arrived a short time later and put out

the fire. damage was contained to one room. it was pretty badly damaged. amazingly no one was hurt and you hear about dogs kind of alerting people but a parent, that's -- >> that's amazing. >> i have a new way to look at the dogs howling. 7:17. we have to go to sal. highway 24 problems. >> very slow. yeah. we had a minor accident but what caused the delay was them trying to -- they have to get the car out of there and they block the right lane to do it for a long time. in fact, i'm looking at the list here, the chp is not telling us whether the accident is gone or not. let me just look at it again make sure i'm not messing something up here. it looks like it finally may be gone. but the damage is done, westbound 24 getting up to the tunnel. we had an earlier crash, a much earlier crash where a car hit the wall. it was okay because it was off to the side. then we had to get the car out of there. it was not easily moveable. you can see what it's done for the morning commute. i want to point out the drive

time here between pleasant hill road and the caldecott tunnel. it's about ten minutes. it's more than double that at about 22 minutes here with speeds at about 20 miles an hour. not a very good deal here for commuters. on 880 from 238 to fremont is 30 miles an hour and about 21 minutes. that's more normal. the drive time there. let's take a look at a live picture of the bay bridge toll plaza. that's about a 20-minute delay at the toll, ten minutes on the bridge. you are looking at just above a half-hour to get in the city. 7:19. let's go to steve. clear skies. there is a cloud up there. no big deal. really mild parts of the coast, san francisco. i mean, it should be about 57 on the high this time of year. the low was around 57. sunny, warm, record highs. cooler by the weekend but continued dry. these were the records yesterday. san jose, 76. mountain view, 74. oakland, 74. oakland downtown 73. sfo, 72. those were all records.

welcome back. 7:23. a big volcano in independent neesh show -- indonesia keeps erupting forcing thousands to leave their home. more than 20,000 people have left. it started to send hot lava and ash into the air back in september. there was another big eruption today. seismologists expect them to continue to happen for a few more weeks. no one has been hurt so far. the united states will send $300 million extra aid of victims of syria's war. secretary of state john kerry announced it during a conference today in kuwait, one that focused on international fund-raising for those affected by the war in syria.

about half of that money will help the victims of the war still in syria while the rest, it will go to refugee camps in neighboring countries. secretary kerry says the refugees are struggling without basic necessities especially in really cold weather. >> our contributions today, we're providing fuel for heating and cooking, we're providing thermal blankets and other critical winter supplies for tens of thousands of people. in addition, we're also investing in meeting the longer- term needs of syria's neighbors. >> according to the united states, more than 9 million siriance need a-- syrians need assistance. the supreme court is hearing arguments over regulating protests at abortion clinics. the case comes from massachusetts, where protesters must be at least 35 feet from

the entrance of the clinic. plaintiffs include a 77-year- old activist who says the buffer zones violate her first amendment rights. the clinics say incidents of violence are down in states or cities that have a buffer. clean water is starting to return to communities in west virginia. originally about 300,000 people were not able to turn on their faucets since last week's contamination. about half the residents now have access to clean water. businesses and restaurants in downtown charleston have reopened but schools in four counties remain closed. a chemical used to clean coal leaked from a storage tank and ended up in a river contaminating the local water service. searching for the arsonist terrorizing the south bay. the video we just obtained that shows the suspect moments before one of those fires. we're live in mills where

southbound in hayward. but here as we focus in, we've had some slow traffic through that area. off the altamont pass. the bay bridge toll plaza is backed under for a 30-minute -- backed up for a 30-minute delay. let's go back to the desk. police in milpitas are investigating the first homicide of the year. ktvu's janine de la vega is live at the executive inn where police are looking into whether a party at the hotel played a role in a deadly shooting in the parking lot. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. a lieutenant told me they are still looking into that. they are unsure if it's related to the homicide that happened here. you can see police have the executive inn roped off with crime tape. it's been that way for the past nine hours. officers have been taking america urements and collecting evidence. taking -- measurements and collecting their evidence, taking their time. they were called at 10:30 last night after people in the area

heard gunshots. officers say they found a lot of hysterical people and a man on the ground in the parking lot unresponsive. police say the victim was shot at least once. he died at the scene. the victim says it appears there was an argument that occurred. they don't know what it was about. they also discovered that a party occurred on the third floor. it's unknown if the victim attended it. officers have been collecting evidence there in case there's a connection. this is the city's first homicide of the year. >> this is a relatively safe city. we make the findings we can and come to a conclusion if we can. >> reporter: a group of women who police say were relatives of the victim showed up looking for information. they were distraught and didn't want to talk on camera. police described the victim as a latino man who is between 20 to 25 years old. they don't know if he was a registered guest at the hotel. police do not have a motive and

no arrests have been made. they believe though that there's more than one suspect. they also say that a dark- colored sedan was seen leaving the hotel. investigators plan on interviewing anyone who is staying at the hotel so that's why this investigation is gonna take some time. we're trying to get a guest count of who was here. but we're still waiting on that. but we know that the coroner was just called to the scene. so it appears that it may be wrapping up soon. reporting live from milpitas, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:34. ktvu has obtained surveillance video of a man setting a fire in a neighborhood that's been plagued by arson fires. the video shows a man setting a front porch on fire, then coming back three different times until the fire spreads. in another video, we see the suspect walking near one of the homes that later caught fire. he's holding clothing in his hands. then comes back to the scene just minutes before the fire

starts. >> the cats didn't get out. we were hoping they would come out. they are probably hide i would hide if i was a cat. >> san jose police are taking the lead in a joint fire and police investigation. there have been 13 arson fires but none the past couple of days. 7:34. well, the dry conditions here in the bay area have made it especially dangerous for fires to pop up. brian flores is live in the oakland hills where many residents are keeping a close eye on the conditions there. >> reporter: no question about that, tori. good morning. we've been here in the oakland hills for quite sometime. the wind peer podically -- periodically picks up. they are keeping an eye on things outside their windows and also keeping an eye on the sign that says very high fire danger today. the dry conditions, it could make it potentially very dangerous today. a red flag warning remains in effect until tomorrow morning in the north bay mountains and

east bay hills. firefighters say a lack of rain has lead to extreme i -- extremely dry bush. they say it's rare to have a red flag warning issued in january. these are conditions we see in september and october. this is what concerns firefighters a lot during the fire danger. it seems like we saw it off kimble island off antioch. apparently this grass fire started at a homeless camp yesterday afternoon. several fire crews patelled the -- battled the fire. a helicopter was brought in for air support. overall, three homes were destroyed and about 40 acres burned. >> we lost a lawnmower, generator. our generator shed, our water power tank. >> reporter: luckily, nobody was hurt and the fire was eventually put out sometime around 9:00 last night. want to take you back out here live. the wind picks up periodically here in the oakland hills. it's starting to pick up as we speak. you see the bushes and the trees there blowing in the wind

there according to the national weather service wind gusts in the oakland hills could potentially reach 20, 40 miles an hour. obviously firefighters and residents keep an eye here in the oakland hills. we're live, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:36. bay area health officials now confirming two more deaths from the h1n1 flu. yesterday's solano county reported its first flu death of the season. an unidentified man in his 40s from vallejo. san mateo county reported the third flu death but gave us no information about that person. there have been 17 deaths from the flu here in the bay area. meantime, el amwood directional -- elmwood correctional facility is limiting the movement of its inmates after three confirmed h1n1 cases. there are 11 more suspected cases. no visitors are being allowed into the affected areas except for the lawyers of the inmates. inmates are required to stay in

their housing area but they will be transported to court appearances. the santa clara county sheriff's department says they are gonna re-evaluate the situation friday morning. you will see if it will lift restrictions. 7:37. nurses at alta bates summit medical center in berkeley are planning a protest today over recent layoffs and program cuts. sutter health announced last week it plans to lay off 358 employees and close a skilled nursing facility. the hospital says the cuts are necessary to return alta bates to financial health but nurses say the hospital is already short staffed and the layoffs will negatively affect patient care. the nurses are scheduled to picket today from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 in the afternoon. 7:38. happening today, david douglas, the man accused of kidnapping a 7-year-old girl from antioch, he's due back in court. here's some video from his first appearance last week. prosecutors say on january 3rd,

douglas followed the girl and her mother home from walmart and abducted the girl. they were found about four hours later at the antioch marina. he's charged with six felony, facing life in prison if convicted. so far, he's not entered a plea. three teenaged boys have reportedly admitted that they sexually assaulted a sara toe fa teenager who later -- saratoga teenager who later took her own life. two of the boys served 30 days in juvenile detention for the crime. a third boy is right now serving 45 days. the paper reports two of the boys admitted they had inappropriate photos of other girls. now, audrey pott took her life after finding out photos of her were being texted to classmates. photos were taken after she passed out at a party. criminal charges have been filed against an employee of a petsmart store in san san

carlos and her husband. the two are accused of stealing from customers while they were on vacation. we first reported the investigation back in september after police discovered the homes of at least seven customers on the peninsula were burglarized in less than a month. police say ashley kirk and her husband, juan carlos ortego raw maus, targeted the -- ramos, targeted the homes of customers, knowing those customers were out of town. >> gift cards, electronics, jewelry, anything they could steal it seems as if they took. >> kirk and her husband have pled not guilty and remain behind bars on $500,000 bail. san francisco has launched a new street safety campaign with a very ambitious goal. it's called vision zero. it's aimed at ending all pedestrian and bicyclists'

fatalities by the year 2024. now, the plan calls for police to aggressively enforce traffic laws and crack down on speeders and red light runners. vision steer row also outlines plans to make the streets of san francisco safer. on average two to three pedestrians are hit by vehicles every day in san francisco. later today, community leaders will kick off a safety campaign for the lunar new year. police say criminals use this time of celebration to take advantage of business owners through extortion and robberies. the safety campaign will include volunteers passing out small packages to the general public. they have information on how to prevent the left of electronic devices and other information. the year of the horse, by the way starts january 31st. president obama is on his way to north carolina right now. this is new video of the president boarding air force one at joint base andrews in

maryland just about a half-hour ago. in north carolina, the president will tour a factory and he will also announce new steps his administration is taking to strengthen manufacturing in the u.s. president obama is expected to nominate a former state cabinet secretary to head the small business administration when he returns from north carolina later today. the president says maria contreras-sweet has a history of working with small businesses and has been an advocate for latinos. she was born in gawd guadalajara, mexico. if confirmed, she will be the second latino to term in the cabinet. the house of reppives is expected to -- house of representatives is expected to pass a $1 trillion spending bill that restores some budget cuts. the bipartisan measure maintains the current spending levels for the affordable care act despite repeated republican efforts to cut the funding.

investors hoping the stock market continues to bounce back following monday's would worst day of the year performance. bank stocks are leading an early rise after bank of america reported a surge in earnings. b of a's stock is up 2.5% after reporting that loans on the balance sheet continue to improve. the dow is up 94. the nasdaq is up 19. the s&p up 7. thousands of americans are complaining to the federal government about their credit card companies. more than 20% of all complaints are about capital one. city bank comes in second at 18% and bank of america and chase try for third with 13% each. that means nearly two-thirds of all complaints filed are against just four credit card companies. police in roswell, new

mexico say they still don't know why a 12-year-old boy fired shots inside his middle school yesterday injuring two students. police say the 7th grader walked into the school gym, pulled a shot gun out of a bag, and started shooting at students who were waiting for school to start. a 13-year-old girl and an 11- year-old boy were shot and wounded. they are both still in the hospital. a teacher ran up to the boy and convinced him to put the gun down. police are also investigating reports a boy may have warned students don't go to school yesterday. classes are canceled today. but counselors are available to talk to students. we're also getting some new information about a former tampa police officer accused of killing a man after a texting dispute inside a movie theater. prosecutors say it's not the first time he caused trouble over texting. yesterday in court, prosecutors told the jury that the defendant, 71-year-old kirr tis reeves -- curtis reeves, was involved in another incident

three weeks ago. a woman said she was texting and that caused reeves to glare at her all throughout the movie. she said he followed her to the restroom and made her feel extremely uncomfortable. >> just upset about the whole situation and kept staring and giving us dirty looks. >> reeves is facing a charge. second-degree murder. he's accused of arguing with the victim, chad olsen, about texting in the movie theater. witnesses say olsen threw a bag of popcorn at reeves who shot him with a gun. it is 7:48. five years ago today, danville pilot sully sullenberger safely landed a disabled u.s. airways jet on new york's hudson river shortly after leaving la guardia airport on january 15th, 2009. a flock of geese damaged both the jet's engines. sullenberger's successful landing became known as the miracle on the hudson. all 155 passengers survived.

it was freezing cold that day. the plane is on display at a museum in north carolina. sullenberger now retired is in new york today to commemorate the fifth anniversary along with other members of the flight crew and some of the passengers. 7:48. the countdown goes on to sunday's showdown in seattle between the 49ers around the seahawks. ktvu's claudine wong is in the studio now with more on the 49er fans heading north. claudine? >> well, the fans are getting excited about the game. fans showing their dedication to the team already and the quest for 6. i talked to fans headed north to see the game in person. they say they should could not pass up the chance to watch the game. since seattle went sell through california, they are buying their tickets at sites like stubhub. foreman one fan i talked to said they purposely -- more than one fan i talked to said they purposely bought the tickets -- >> they late us so much.

the scene. no information on either the suspect or the victim. starting today, new restrictions on tour buses in one san francisco neighborhood are being enforced. people who live in the alamo square area say they've already seen a reduction in the number of buses that go by the famous victorian painted ladies. residents say there are still a lot of tourists who come by but they are walking rather than riding buses. san francisco tourism officials say they are still worried the decision to ban buses carrying eight or more passengers could hurt their business. in just a couple of hours, demolition is scheduled to begin on the former wild west structures at the site of the danville hotel. those buildings are located at the corner of railroad and prospect avenues in the downtown area. the project will build 35,000 feet of new restaurants, stores and residential units. it's expected to last through 2015. the danville hotel itself will be preserved and restored.

southbound, it slows to 238 all the way down in fremont. 101 packed up from 280 into mountain view. let's go back to the desk. sal, thank you. with the daylight now we're getting a belter look at the damage in san francisco where the bomb squad blew up a suspicious device last night. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live in the sunset district to show us how a nearby restaurant was affected by all of this. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. we're at 46th and judah. it appears that a nearby restaurant right there on the corner, some folks were eating. there's a lot of food on the table. they probably had to basically get out of there whenever the san francisco police department said that they were gonna be blowing up this device across the street. if you take a look over here, you can see the trajectory of all of the glass as it actually -- the explosion happened all the way on our side of the street, but you can see it blew the truck window out there and also the stucco came right off

the front of that house right there and there was a fire on that upper level. and then if you pan over here to the left, you can see that the corner store also sustained some damage. the people next door in that house found what they thought might be old explosives. the homeowner recently died. his family was clearing the place out when they stumbled upon the devices around 8:45 last night. the bomb squad decided to blow them up. neighbors were evacuated. the explosion shattered glass, windows, knocking items off shelves and put a hole in the wall. >> i had no idea what went off. i thought it was a transformer. rattled the windows a little bit. >> reporter: explosion sparked a one-alarm fire which crews quickly got out. no one was hurt in the blast. the area was cordoned off and muni was rerouted for hours. the 18 bus line is going around this scene. back here live, you can see this is the bus stop that no one is able to go to. they are jumping on across the

street and then sort of going around the street. not too much of a hassle for folks this morning if you are taking the bus. they are going to be out here for some time. we're not told exactly how long the police department will be investigating. but there's a lot of things they want to look at and maybe things that they will try to figure out exactly, you know, what they had there when they decided to blow it up. we're live in san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:05. new this morning, a pedestrian was hit and killed while walking on interstate 580 in oakland. around 1:00 this morning, the chp received a call about a man staggering on the eastbound lanes near keller avenue. three minutes later. a separate report came in that the man had been hit. police say the unidentified 35- year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver stopped and has been cooperating with investigators. the chp closed the road for more than an hour. it is still up clear why the man was walking on the freeway. another pedestrian was

killed. this was in a hit-and-run in pacifica. the deadly crash happened before 8:00 on palmetto avenue. police say the driver ran over a man in his 50s crossing the busy street. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. police say the vehicle involved was a gray or dark-colored car, possibly a monte carlo. 8:05. earlier this morning, a car smashed into a pole on eastbound 80 knocking down the pole right across several lanes of the freeway. now, the chp first got a call around 3:50 this morning that a white mercedes hit the pole near the berkeley curve. the three left lanes were blocked for a while. at least three cars were damaged by that pole and one person was taken to the hospital. other cars had flat tires because of all debris in the roads. now, the driver who hit that pole ran away. the chp is still searching for him. 8:06. happening today, a man accused of setting a fire at the

chinese consulate in san francisco is scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing. a judge is set to decide whether yan feng will be kept in custody or granted bail while awaiting trial. prosecutors say feng admitted to setting a fire at the chinese consulate this year. he allegedly told fbi agents had been hearing voices in chinese. that's what led him to attack the consulate. the building was damaged but no one was hurt. and a court hearing is scheduled this afternoon for san francisco 49ers' linebacker aldon smith. he's not expected to appear. a superior court judge has combined two cases. one involves three assault rifles allegedly found in smith's santa clara home in 2012, the other involves a misdemeanor dui charge last september. well, the 49ers say the parking shortage problem at the new levi stadium in santa clara, it's been fixed. ktvu's alex savidge joining us

live now and, alex, this means the 9ers won't be playing just on sundays anymore. >> reporter: that's right, dave. get ready for some monday need football here in santa clara. the 49ers say they have plenty of parking now for all of those fans. they -- last night they announced they secured about 10,000 extra parking spots at various businesses near the new levi stadium. it will improve the traffic and the parking situation on game day. there was huge concern about a parking shortage. the team decided they did not want to host any weeknight games during the first season but now they say they will be able to host monday night and thursday night games. last night at the santa clara city council meeting, the vice president of stadium operations said the 49ers in total should be able to secure more than 31,000 parking spots within walking distance of the new stadium. fans will be able to park at mission college, great america and they will even park at a golf course across the street. about 5,000 cars will park on

the fairways at the santa clara golf and tennis club and in turn, the 49ers will pay for improvements to the course, things like widening those cart paths so the cars can drive on them. but some golfers aren't exactly thrilled about the idea of fans parking and tailgating on their favorite course. >> it's local. it's pretty nice. silicon valley, one of the cheapest around. >> reporter: what do you think all of those cars are gonna do? what's the impact gonna be? >> it won't be good. it will probably cause some damage, i'm sure. i don't know. they have some experience, i suppose, by the rosebowl. they park them on the golf court down there. >> reporter: they do the same thing down at the rosebowl in pasadena on game days, putting cars on a neighboring golf course. here in santa clara, the 49ers do believe they have dealt with the parking shortage issue. the plan to to host -- the plan

is to host monday and thursday night games in the 2015 season and possible blib the 2014 season -- possibly the 2014 season. live this morning in zlar -- in santa clara, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. one east bay city is getting closer to raising the minimum rage. the richmond city council is considering three propose hals that would give that city the highest minimum wage in the region. one plan is to raise it to $11 an hour. the two other proposals would make the minimum wage $12.30 an hour or $15 an hour. one of those proposals may end up on the november ballot. right now, san francisco has the highest minimum wage. 10.74 an hour. san jose's rate is 10.15 an hour. the state minimum is $8 an hour but in july that goes up to $9 an hour. >> 8:10. there may finally be some good news for drivers in san

francisco. the san francisco chronicle says mayor ed lee wants to stop charging for metered parking, i should say, on sundays. the city started charging for sunday street parking last january to bring in additional funds from muni. lee plans to make the proposal on friday in his state of the city address where he will also ask voters to approve a $500 million bond to fund transportation projects. 8:10. possibly dangerous chemicals including asbestos, mercury and lead paint are being cleaned out of a building at san jose state university. they were found at the science building last week. school officials have locked the building until the toxic chemicals are clean umed. cleaned up. the cleanup should be finished before classes start on january 27th. the lock stresm of bone-dry weather has made this an anxious -- the long-stretch of

8:16. dozens of wildfires sparked by lightning are raging in australia. almost 200 homes have already been destroyed in the eastern and southern parts of australia. more than 1500 firefighters are battling these flames. gusty winds are expected today and that may make things even worse with no relief in sight. forecasters predict higherrer temperatures over the next few days. about 10,000 homes also have no power because of the hot

weather. 8:16. the nsa's controversial surveillance programs may have a broader reach than first thought. "the new york times" reports the nsa has installed software on close to 100,000 computers around the world to conduct surveillance. the targets include police and drug cartels in mexico and the russian military. some computers are not even connected to the internet. the revelation comes as president obama is expected to announce new limitation ops. nsa this come -- limitations on the nsa coming this friday, including phone records. the chairman of the high- speed rail authority is testifying before a congressional committee in washington, d.c. this morning. in testimony prepared for the hearing, dan richard, the chairman, says high-speed rail would with attract drivers and also frequent flyers who face delays between los angeles and the bay area.

however, modesto congressman jeff dennen is criticizes the cost of the project. he called this morning's hearing. he says the bullet train project is facing a possible funding shortfall in april when california has to come up with $180 million just to match the federal grants. $765 million settlement for nfl concussion claims that's not enough. that was the ruling of one federal judge yesterday. she says her money is needed to cover the 20,000 retired players and has asked for more financial analysis from both side. the proposed settlement negotiated over several months is designed to last 65 years. more than 4500 players have filed lawsuits, some of them accusing the nfl of fraud for the way its handled concussions. well, you are about to meet what some people call a feathery fire alarm.

but it's getter than it was -- benter than it was -- better than it was. i had a nice question by joel. he said if we're getting a summer time pattern in the winter, can we get a winter time pattern in the summer? yes. the jet stream if retreats too far together north and we get a bag of trough hanging over us. what the end result, you get a lot of fog, cool temperatures. and i think that's what will happen when we get to june and july. it's unseasonably strong high pressure now. off the charts. records yesterday. records probably today. these are the forecasted highs. these are the records. santa cruz, 76 is the forecasted high. that would be a record. a lot of records were set on this date in 2009. salinas, 80 yesterday. 80 degrees. monterey, 78. that would also be a record if they hit that again. there's a bunch. driest ever in california just came out sent out a graphic statewide, incredibly dry, as

the united states will send 380 million in extra aid to victims of syria's civil war. secretary of state john kerry made the announcement during a conference in kuwait that focused on international fund- raising for those affected by the war in syria. half of the money will help victims of the war still in syriale while the rest -- sir yaul, while the rest will go to neighboring countries. >> contributions today we're providing fuel for heating and cooking and we're providing thermal blankets and other critical winter supplies for tens of thousands of people. >> according to the uns, more than 9 million syrians need assistance as the war grinds on after three years. 8:26. this morning, the u.s. supreme court is hearing arguments about regulating protests at

abortion clinics. the case is from massachusetts where protesters have to be at least 35 feet away from the entrance of abortion clinics. the plaintiffs include a 77- year-old activist who says those buffer zones violate her first amendment rights. however, the abortion clinics say incidents of violence are down in the cities and states that do have a buffer zone. the federal government says taking large doses of a prescribed pain reliever may cause long-term health problems. fda is warning against taking more than 325 milligrams of acitamenaine at the time. that's often used in combination with drugs of oxycodone and coding. 8:27. police in milpitas, they are investigating the first homicide of the year in that

>> see still have a lot of slow traffic out there. first of all, let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, it's backed up for a 15, 20- minute delay before you make it on the bridge. no problems on the span but that's taken about a half-hour to complete the journey. 880 looks okay. northbound 880 is slow past the coliseum. san jose in the south bay, a lot of slow traffic all over the place. nothing really to blame just a couple of minor accidents but the peninsula, 2le 0 is recover -- 280 is recovering from an earlier crash. woodside road area. southbound 101 is very slow down. i would still use 280 but 280 is going to be slower than you i like this. let's go back to the desk. all right, sal. police in milpitas have a mystery on their hands. a man was found dead in a hotel parking lot last night. it's their first homicide of the year in milpitas. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live from milpitas. we saw just minutes ago the

police are still out there, janine. [no audio] >> all right. we obviously have minor technical problems with janine de la vega in milpitas. we'll get back to her momentarily. ktvu obtained surveillance video of a man starting a fire. it shows a man setting a porch on fire, then he comes back three different times until the fire spreads. in another video, there's this. we see you the suspect walking near one of the homes that caught fire. he's holding clothing and then comes back minutes before the fire starts. >> we lost our cats. they didn't get out with the fires. we were hoping they would come out. they are probably hiding. i would hide if i was a cat. >> san jose police are taking

the lead in a joint fire and police investigation. there have been 13 arson fires but there have been none in the past couple of days. we know it's january but it is dry. dry conditions all over the bay area. firefighters are on high alert. ktvu's brian flores joining us live. you are back out in the oakland hills where the weather today, that's not helping in the fire danger problem. >> reporter: it's dry and windy. we've been inspect oakland hills for about an hour. it's remaining calm. seconds later, the wind continues to pick up. that's a concern for residents keeping an i outside of their windows and keeping an eye on the side that says fire danger. you mentioned the dry conditions and lack of rain that could make it very dangerous. a red flag warning is in effect until tomorrow morning in the north bay mountains and east bay hills. firefighters say a lack of rain has led to extremely dry brush.

>> be aware of no open flames outside. it's very windy. when you are mowing your lawn, sparks could fly and get into the dry fuels we have. and when you are barbecuing, don't barbecue in an area that's extremely dry. >> reporter: and this is what concerns firefighters a lot during this fire danger. it seems like we saw off kimble island near antioch, a fire started at a homeless camp around 2:30 yesterday afternoon. several fire crews responded. calfire helicopter was also brought in for air support. overall, three homes were destroyed. about 40 acres burned. luckily, nobody was hurt and the fire was put out around 9:00 last night. as we take it back out here live. the wind picks up periodically

in the oakland hills. according to the national weather service, wind gusts could pick up between 20, 40 miles an hour today. we're live in the oakland hills, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. all right, brian. 8:35. we're gonna go back to milpitas now. ktvu's janine de la vega is out there right now where police still investigating that city's first homicide of the year. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. well, a lieutenant told me that the hotel does have a surveillance video. but he hadn't viewed the tape it himself. they are sending over some detectives to a nearby thrift store to see if those surveillance cameras cam churred anything. they -- captured anything. they are wrapping up things. so far, their investigation, they've been able to determine there is mere than one suspect -- more than one suspect. police say they were called here on demcy road on calaveras and 680 after people in the area heard gunshots. officers found a lot of hysterical people and a man on the ground in the parking lot

unresponsive. police say he had been shot at least once and died then at the scene. detectives say it appears there was some sort of argument that occurred. deablthive were scene on the third floor wearing masks and collecting evidence. a party occurred there, but it's unknown if the victim attended it. >> our field evidence technicians are prose something the scene on the third floor. there was a party there. we're not sure if it was related or not. we're still trying to figure that out. >> reporter: a group of women who police say were relatives of the victim showed up earlier this morning looking for information from the officers. they were very distraught and didn't want to talk on camera. police describe this victim as a latino man who is between 20 to 25 years old. they are still trying to find out if he was a registered best at the hotel. police do not -- guest at the hotel. police don't have a motive. no arrests have been made. the one piece of information, a dark-colored sedan was seen

leaving the hotel after the shooting. and whack out here live -- back out here live, this hotel is close to a neighborhood where there's been gang activity. but it's unknown if this is gang-related at all. reporting live from milpitas, jafg --jack -- janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. bay area officials confirming two more deaths from the h1n1 flu. solano county reported its first flu death of the season a man from san mateo. there have been at least 17 deaths from the flu in the bay area. el am correctional -- emwood correctional facility is limiting movement of inmates after three confirmed h1n1 cases. there are 11 more suspected cases. no visitors are being allowed into the affected areas except for the lawyers for the inmate. the inmates in the affected areas are required to stay in their housing areas but they

will be taken to court appearances. >> inmate that has any flu-like symptoms, we'll give it to them. we'll provide them medical treatment and give them a you go shot and -- flu shot and take care of them. >> the santa clara county sheriff's department says it will re-evaluate the situation friday morning to see if restrictions should be lifted. they ares had telling all visitors to call ahead. nurses at alta bates summit medical center are planning a protest today over recent layoffs and program cutbacks. suttert health announced last week it plans to lay off 358 employees and close a skilled nursing facility. the hospital says the cuts are necessary to return alta bates to financial health. but nurses say the hospital is already short staffed and the layoffs will negatively affect patient care. the nurses are scheduled to picket from 10:30 a.m.

to 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. san francisco has launched a new street safety campaign with a very ambitious ghoel. it's called vision zero. it's aimed at ending all pedestrian and bicyclists fatalities by the year 2024. the plan calls for the police to aggressively enforce traffic laws and also crack down on 1350eders and red light runners -- speeders and red line runners. vision zero outlines plans to make san francisco streets safer. on an average, two to three pedestrians are hit by vehicles every day in san francisco. today, community leaders in san francisco will kick off a safety campaign for the lunar new year. police say crooks use this time of celebration to take advantage of merchants through extortions and robberies. the safety campaign will also include volunteers passing out the small red packets to the general public. the packets contain information on how to prevent the theft of electronic devices. the year of the horse begins

stocks are rising on optimism over bank earns after bank of america reported profits surged to 3.4 billion for the fourth quarter. technology stocks also climbing fast with apple up 2%. microsoft up 1.6%. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is currently up 112. the nasdaq is up 25. s&p up 8. 8:44. let's bring you up to date son some of the other top stories we're following for you.

police in milpitas stillth investigating whether a -- still investigating whether a party at the executive inn may be connected to a deadly shooting in that hotel's parking lot. police found a man shot to death in the hotel parking lot on demcy road. so far, no arrests have been made. 12 hours ago an explosion rocked parts of san francisco's sunset district. police are still out there investigating the discovery of a suspicious device. ktvu's tara moriarty is outside the home to show us the damage after the bomb squad blew that device up. tara? >> reporter: well, 46 and judah is still blocked off. they have the mobile command unit here. somebody just pulled up from the san francisco police department with some barricade. i'm assuming they will be here quite some time. if you look over here, you can see the house where all of this happened and there are chunks of the stucco missing. they were blown off the facade and then you can see the trajectory of glass. a car had its window blown out.

if we pan over to the left, you can see the corner store here, that also sustained some damage. the people next door found what they thought might be some old explosives and the homeowner had recently died. his family was clearing the place out when they stumbled upon them. around 8:45 last night, the bomb squad detonated the devices, neighbors were evacuated but the blast hit the western sunset market shattering windows and glass bottles knocking items off shelves and putting a hole in the wall. some neighbors were a bit shocked by the damage. >> i'm surprised they did that here, too. i mean, you would think they would take it somewhere else and detonate it, but i think to do it here, i don't know. that's kind of -- i'm surprised. >> reporter: the explosion sparked a one-alarm fire. no one was hurt. the area was cordoned off. muni was rerouted for hours. now everything is back to normal with muni. but the busline, 18, you can

see that no one will be able to catch the bus here. they will jump on the bus across the street and go around. not too much of a hassle for folks. you can see there is a police officer who just arrived on scene, and they are setting up more bareky kadz here -- barricades here trying to get people out. this investigation will take quite sometime. police in roswell, new mexico are trying to determine why a 12-year-old boy fired shots inside his middle school yesterday injuring two students. police say the 7th grader walked into the school gym, pulled out a shot gun from a bag and started shooting at students waiting for school to start. a 13-year-old girl and an 11- year-old boy were shot and wounded. both are still in the hospital. a teacher then ran up to the boy and convinced him to put the gun down. there are reports that boy had been bullied at school. classes at that school are canceled today but counselors are available to talk to

students. the countdown continues to the nfc championship showdown between the 9ers and seap hawks. claudine wong -- seahawks. claudine wong joins us with more on the 9er fans heading north. >> we do know they are headed up there. it should be interesting, this rivalry, already intense. it really continues to heat up. want to talk about the billboard feud. it's picking up steam. the 9ers' billboard is right there. it's along interstate 5, about three miles south of seattle. there's actually a fund-raising campaign to keep it up there. fans have raised more than $13,000. there's the page right there. it's at 13,055 by the time -- the last time we checked. san francisco fans are raises money for ucsf and have raised $18,000. let's talk about the other side of this billboard rivalry. we should also mention that in addition to the ban on ticket sales to california residents for sunday's game, there's also

i mean, the entire state is bone-dry. 27 ukiah. pretty cold there. almost 60 already in l.a. high pressure will stick around. that means a lot of days in the sunshine and warm temperatures. cold mornings for some. mild for others. windy up in the higher elevations. it all translates into sunshine and way above average temperatures. 60s and 70s. novato 74. oakland, 74. livermore, 68. warmer temperatures, anyone who benefits from the offshore breeze. 73 half moon bay. 73 menlo park. everyone is pretty close here including 72 san francisco which would be one shy of a record high set in 2009 as well. warm through friday and then cooler but still dry on the week. it's eight minutes before 9:00. the bay area's newest olympic team member says a lot of people may be surprised by what she's already accomplished. but the 15-year-old said it's something she's dreamed up for -- dreamed of for years.

police in san jose are investigating the city's third homicide in the first two weeks of the new year. they say a map was shot and killed around 5:30 yesterday afternoon near loma verde drive and eden avenue. police say they responded to several reports of shots fired. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. no information about the suspect or the victim. in a couple of hours demolition will start in danville on the former wild west buildings at the site of

the danville hotel. buildings are at railroad and west prospect avenues in downtown danville. the developers plan to preplace them -- replace them with restaurants, stores and residential units. the hotel itself will be preserved and restored. polina edmunds is back at school after winning a spot on the u.s. olympic team that will compete in sochi next month. she jumped and spun her way to a silver medal last weekend. yesterday was the first chance for students to congratulate her in person. she said she was confident going into the competition. that's the attitude she will have going into the olympics. >> been skating for 13 years. it's a pretty long time. i thought it was definitely possible. it was always my dream. >> we'll be happy if she just goes and has a great experience and comes back. she'll be a champion in our eyes either way, i think.
