trips to seattle from the bay area. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. right now, san francisco police are working with the fbi to investigate a bomb detonated by police that set off a powerful explosion inside a home in the outer snut. alex savidge is live with what we're learning about this investigation. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon. san francisco police are working with the fbi trying to figure out what caused this huge blast last night. it's a very active investigation here as we show you. this is 46th avenue near judah. all of this blocked off by crime scene tape right now. you can see investigators going through the house trying to figure out what cause the this explosion -- caused this explosion last night. it was a suspicious device detonated by the bomb squad inside a house and the explosion rocked this neighborhood, blowing out windows at this corner market we're gonna show you. let me show you what it looked

like inside the western sunset market after the blast last night. the force knocked merchandise off the shelves and sent plaster from the walls falling to the floor. the explosion was 8:45 after police came to this house to look at a suspicious device. a neighbor tells us the home's owner had died recently. his place was being cleared out. that's when this unusual discovery was made. no one was hurt last night but people all over the neighborhood heard and felt the blast. >> so close, i felt it was right outside my house. and it wasn't. it was down the block. that's how big it was. it went off so fast it startled me. that's all i can tell you. it bothered my ears and that's pretty good. >> reporter: the fbi was called in to investigate san francisco police. this is not considered a federal issue because it does

not involve terrorism. the fbi is simply providing a couple of bomb technicians to hip analyze the device. it will likely be a lengthy investigation to figure out exactly what this device was and who built it. live this afternoon in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the will. thank you, alex -- all right. thank you, alex. police in pacifica are looking for a driver who hit and killed a pedestrian last night and drove away. the deadly crash happened shortly before 8:00 on palmetta avenue. police say the driver ran over a man in his 50s who was crossing the busy streets. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. police say the vehicle involved was a gray or dark colored car, possibly a monte carlo. milpitas police are investigating their first homicide of the year. that's after just one homicide in all of last year. the 911 call came in around 10:30 last from the executive inn hotel on demcy road. police say they arrived with one -- within one minute and found the victim in the parking

lot suffering from a gunshot wound. he died at the scene. investigators have been interviewing all of the people in the hotel and looking into reports of an argument. >> field evidence technicians are processing the third floor. there was a party there. we are not sure if it's related. we don't know if the argument was related to the party or not. >> they believe the gunman fled in a dark-colored sedan and was not alone. the victim was described as a nan in his early -- man in his early 20s. the coroner has not released his name. a well-known bay area youth coach could face more child molestation charges. 31-year-old andrew nizbitt is charged with 65 felony founds of child molestation. two boys at the grip junior academy have accused him of sexual abuse. prosecutors say more charges are possible after a third alleged victim came forward. he's being held without bail.

according to reports, three teenaged boys have reportedly admitted sexually assaulting a teenager who was passed out at a party and took her own life. three boys served time in juvenile detention. one boy is serving 45 days. the boys admitted to having inappropriate photos of the girl. audrey pott took her life after learning the pictures were being text to classmates. another beautiful day around the bay area. we're expecting some record temperatures around the bay area. but as mark tamayo is here to explain, that means heightened concern for firefighters. right, mark? >> that's right. it's january 15th. we're still talking about fire danger here in the bay area at least for me unheard of. this weather pattern is expected to surge. the humidity level is really dry out there, right around 10%, at least during the

afternoon hours, possibly as low as 5%. the red flag warning in place right now extended until 8:00 thursday morning. winds gusting over 30 miles an hour. that's in place for the north bay hills and east bay hills but still elevated fire danger bay area wide because there's not a lot of moisture out there. temperatures have been trending up. temperatures in the 60s. mid-60s for san francisco and oakland. hayward, 63. san jose currently checking in. 64 degrees. coming up in ten minutes we'll take a look at this, the impossible records we could be breaking -- the possible records we could be breaking and a few changes developing for the weekend. that's all coming up in ten minutes. >> thank you, mark. investigators still looking for the cause of a fire in eastern contra costa county yesterday that destroyed three homes and burned at least 40 acres on lower sherman island. they think people at a homeless camp might have started the fire. no one was injured. four people had to evacuate. the bay area's long stretch of bone-dry weather is making this an anxious time in the

wipe country. so far this winter -- wine country. so far this winter, less than 3 inches of rain have fallen in sonoma county compared to 30 inches last year. that's cause for concern among grape growers as vineyard reservoirs run low. vines are dormant right now but water is needed to spray crops threatened by frost. without rain, there may be early budding. sacramento's city council voted unanimously last night to impose strict limits on water use. that's in response to the lack of rainfall this past year and low water levels in the american river. sacramento wants homes and businesses to cut water use by 20% to 30% and they also plan to step up enforcements of rules that limit outdoor watering. happening now -- nurses at alta bates are picketing in protest over recently announced cuts. brian flores talked to patients to see hoey they are impacted -- to see how they are impacted

by this and has more. >> reporter: more than 100 nurses are out here pickets from a lack of patient care and needs. but speaking with the nurses themselves, they say they don't know if they will have a job in the next few days. >> who has the power! >> we got the power! >> what kind of power! >> reporter: recently sutter health, the parent company of hospitals, announced they will be cutting an estimated 3 a -- 358 positions. they say they are working to quickly reassign nurses to critical nursing vacancies. they claim the money is being mismanaged and going towards high executive pay, high patient charges while cutting patient care. >> short staffing every night, every day in every unit of this hospital where we are many times short, three, four to cover, the mandated number of

nurses required by the state. this is an ongoing problem. >> reporter: some patients we spoke with are feeling the effects as well. we spoke with lindsay karr, a 350-year-old woman going to the infusion clinic for the past three years for a lupus condition and said she will be highly effected if it closes. >> terrifying to think about having to find a new place to go. and, you know, not knowing any of the people there or what the conditions will be like. >> reporter: lindsey also says she doesn't know where to make her next appointment for treatment next month. as for the hospital, we're expecting comment from them ba we've not heard back. as for the nurses, they don't know about future talks but they will be picketing out here until at least 1:30.

brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. bay area health officials have confirmed two more deaths from the h1n1 flu. yesterday, solano county reported its first flu death of the season. the victim was a man in his 40s from vallejo and san mateo county reported its third flu death but no other details were provided. the recent deaths bring the bay area total to 17. at least three confirmed flu cases at the elmwood correctional facility in milpitas have forced movement of inmates. no visitors are being allowed into the affected areas except for attorneys. inmates in the affected areas are required to stay in their housing area but they will be transported to court appearances. coming up -- we have lots of news about the 49ers, including all-star lineback aldon smith's court appearance and how fans are gearing up for the game. and a proposal to save drivers in san francisco a

judge is expected to discuss smith's 2013 misdemeanor dui case and a 2012 felony possession of assault weapons charges. smith has already pleaded not guilty to the gun charges. he's not expected to attend the hearing and that will not affect his play against the seahawks. and the 49ers have come up with a problem to handle parking problems at the new stadium. there had been so much concern about this. the team said they lined up 10,000 parking spots including mission college, great america and the golf course, for a total of 31,000 parking spots. >> probably cause some damage, i'm sure.

they have some experience i'm sure by the rosebowl. they park them by the golf course down there. they might engage some experience from that. >> in exchange, the 49ers will pay for improvements to the golf cures, the team said it will schedule monday and thursday night games in 2015 and possibly late in 2014. >> and excitement is building with the 49ers heading to the nfc championship game against the seahawks. people are scrambling to find tickets and book travel. janine de la vega joins us live from san jose where you've been talking to people about some of the challenges you've been facing. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're here at the san jose airport, where southwest airlines and alaska airlines will be busy over the next few days taking people to seattle. now, the game is on sunday, and finding a seat on an airline is lige illed. inside the san jose airport, they are getting into the spirit and they have "go 9er" signs displayed.

fans will have limited options they are still trying to buy tickets. travel agents told us many departing flights are sold out or there's only availability on the waiting list. those airline tickets available are going for double the price. normally you could fly to seattle for under $300. now the tickets have jumped to near the $600 range. >> return not looking good. it looks like most of the flights are wait listed. depending upon how many seats you are looking for will make a difference. if you are looking for a bunch of seats together on a flight, that's where you will run into trouble. >> if you are still trying to get a plane ticket, travel agents say you need to be flexible with flight times that are convenient and, of course, you have to be willing to pay more. some of the money is not an

option. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. and in concord, a tattoo artist is offering 49er fans a way to show off team spirit. silver needle studios is offering a 49ers tattoo for $49. the shop owner says the deal will be good through the super bowl because he's confident the 49ers will make it there and win. there's good news coming out of the rivalry between the 9ers and sea hawks. now the -- seahawks. now the 49ers say they will match fans' donations for two children hospitals. this is after extra money was raised for a billboard for children's hospital. the 9ers organization says it's getting in on the kind act by matching donations up to $100,000. of course, don't forget you can watch the nfc championship between the 9ers and seahawks right here on ktvu. kickoff is at 3:30 on sunday

afternoon after the game. stay with us for "the point after." there may be good news for drivers in san francisco. mayor ed lee wants to stop charging for metered parking in the city on sundays. this is according to the san francisco chronicle. the city started to charge to bring in funds for muni. lee plans to make the proposal on friday in his state of the city address, where he will also ask voters to approve a $500 million bond to fund transportation projects. today marks five years since danville pilot sully sullenberger safely landed a disabled jet on the new york hudson river. it happened january 15th, 2009 when a flock of geese damaged both of the plane's engines after taking off from la guardia airport. sullenberger's successful landing became known as the miracle on the hudson. today, he's in new york to commemorate the fifth anniversary along with other

throughout the afternoon hours, lower 70s. by 6:00, still in the lower 60s and then back down in the mid- 50s by 9:00 tonight. weekend forecast, a few changes, not the change we're waiting for. but a little bit of a dropoff in temperatures especially by sunday. once again, the storm track heading way up to the north. in fact, most of the west rain free over the next few days as this area of high pressure. we know it's strong. remains in place. that sinking air it's warming air. we already know the results from the warmup yesterday. we're talking about some 60s in the warmest locations, will be approaching the mid-70s. forecast highs this afternoon, look at all of the 70s as january 15th. we're talking about 70 in santa rosa. 72 in san francisco. oakland at 74 and some more neighborhoods, a few more 60s and 70s showing up in san jose. morgan hill and gilroy. there's that santa cruz. look at that 78 degrees getting very close to 80. 80 degrees later on, at least if not today possibly tomorrow.

the nasdaq, up 29. s&p is up 8. bay area home sales fell to a six-year low last month due to fewer homes on the market. the research firm data quick says that people purchased 6,714 new and previously owned homes and condos in december. that's the lowest level since december of 2007 and almost 13% below the sale rate in december of 2012. apple will be refunding millions of dollars to parents whose kids purchased apps without their knowledge. the federal trade commission announced a 32.5 million settlement to the case today. apple is accused of not adequately notifying parents about a feature that allows kids to buy apps without patental consent. the company has received 37,000 claims from parents wanting a refund. san jose figure skater polina edmunds is back in school after winning a spot on the u.s. olympic team that will
