up quietly. he was spotted or caught on tape at various times between january 8 through the 12th. the most incrim nate incrim nateing was him setting it on fire. he became the person of interest after a midnight duty sergeant went through databases. >> reporter: when we are investigating arsons and we're able to find something on the arson registry that lives in the area, it's a good lead. >> reporter: he's charged with two counts of arson but they feel that number will go up. he's a suspect in a huge san jose warehouse fire last week that, because of its size, hadn't been included in an

arson fire. >> i'm a nice person, but somebody with problems who need help. >> reporter: that was the suspect himself from a jailhouse interview during a string of arsons 15 years ago. we're putting together the coverage at that time to show at 6:00 so we can hear what he said then for what he said now as a suspect. we continue the team coverage tonight. he spoke with eighth beers who have been terrorized by the fire and they have to be breathing a sigh of relief. >> reporter: yes. this is a home that was destroyed over the weekend. you can see how damaged the building is and how everything

is boarded up. the good news is that the alleged arsonist is behind bars. >> the flames were going out of control. my dad and my brother, we actually knocked on the door several times trying to get them out. >> reporter: they got out safety but are homeless now. >> it's shocking somebody would do that. i'm glad they caught them. >> reporter: a trailer at this church was set on fire twice and the church pastor was at the press conference with the police and fire officials. >> i feel good because i thought he would come back again especially after seeing the interview and this on television. but i was relieved by not getting any more phone calls at 5:00 in the morning saying there's another fire.

jose a great place to live and raise a family. continuing coverage of the warm and dry conditions lingering tonight. a red flag warning expired this morning, but the fire danger is still a serious concern right now. firefighters are battling a wildfire in southern california tonight near glendora. two homes have been destroyed and some 2,000 people are evacuated. we have received an update and we know the wildfire has stopped spreading and there's less of a threat to nearby communities. here in the bay area, a frightening fire on the san mateo cost is keeping fire cruise on alert. we are live with what could be good news for fire crews who are stretched thin this evening. >> reporter: right now it's crazy dry on the san mateo coast and a key measure of fire danger is something called fuel

moisture. right now it's at 3%, a number not seen since late last year. >> reporter: they are trying to put out this hill side, unprecedented low humidity. late last night and into the morning cal fire called crews with this fast-moving 4-acre brush fire. >> it was frighteening because i live right here. >> it's hard to burn things on the coast because it's always so moist. it's a basituation. we need rain. >> reporter: crews are stretched thin. seasonal crews were released this last november and they have emergency staffing for five

extra engines today. >> we're prepared hire roughly 128 additional firefighters hopefully in the next couple of weeks. >> reporter: firefighters say what they are really hoping is for a change in the weather. even extra crews may not be enough if the never-before-seen conditions continue. our chief meteorologist is tracking more. >> the fourth day in a row we have had records in the bay area. it's dry out there. we'll look at some of the numbers, just unusual weather. san francisco, downtown, a big one, because those records go back to the 1850s, the oldest records in the state. 72 was the record there. oakland, 78 degrees downtown. there's a record at gilroy and

at the oakland airport. i'll talk about a cool-down coming, and we'll talk about the specifics of those. and an updated draught monitor. we've been upgraded to severe in the bay area. i'll let you know what that means a little bit later. a live report from l. a. county where three people have been arrested in connection with the wild fair that has already burned two homes. a flu vaccination clinic is wrapping up in alameda county, and we didn't hear of new deaths in the valley today, the recent string of deaths has people coming in to get a flu shot. last checked, 20 flu-related deaths confirmed in the bay area. there have been deaths recorded now in all nine bay area counties. >> reporter: a lot of folks who thought that they didn't

need a flu shot are ending up in places like this, emergency rooms, really in trouble, and that's why the next building over, what's going on is a very brisk business in $10 flu shots because as more and more people hear about more deaths, then they take the flu shots very seriously, and i mean very seriously. there have been spot shortages of flu shots over the last few weeks. supplies still seem to be available but make no mistake, this is a very big flu season. >> this one has been very early and intense. we have had early mortalities, which is unusual for california because we usually don't get it until the end of january, beginning of february. >> reporter: today we randomly called 10 bay area pharmacies asking about the availability of flu shots, as

well as the early-stage treatment drug, tamiflu. the shortage of it is so acute that the creator has send i instructions to pharmacies on how to make it. get a flu shot and... >> wash your hands. >> reporter: the h1n1 strain which only appeared five years ago has been responsible for the growing number of bay area deaths. this year's bay area flu shot was made to help with that. target continues to send out e-mails tonight offering a free year of credit monitoring to customers who may have been

affected by a recent security breach at the stores. they say the brief happened between november 27 and december 15 and involved 10s of thousands of names and addresses and phone numbers and debit and credit card information. the customers have until april 23rd to register for the free credit monitoring and theft protection. the ceo said, quote, i'm truly sorry this incident occurred and regret any inconvenience this may cause you. some people who use this device say it's giving them a rash. this is a picture of the article. the man says the readness that you see there came from his high-tech exercise device made by a company in an stran, tracking how much exercise the wearer down throughout the day and sends data, fitbit.

a drug task force is

announcing one of the biggest drug raids in county history. the narcotics team said today operation crystal lens resulted in the seizure of more than $18 million worth of drugs and the arrest of 17 people connected with a street gang. they took cash and firearms and vehicles. special other agencies were involved in the two-year operation. three adults and a baby are safe tonight after a two-alarm fire in the home. it was reported this morning in concord. a young couple and their infant boy, along with a roommate, were in the house. this is cell phone video of smoke pouring from the home. the baby's father said it was a frightening moment when he realized his young son was in danger. >> i grabbed the baby and

almost fell and ran out. >> crews put out the fire quickly. nobody was injured although the father says the baby was a little frightened. no word yet on what caused the fire. developing news known l. a. county, some 2,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes because of a wildfire there. three people already have been arrested for starting it. in just the past half hour we learned the fire chief says the crews are getting the upper hand and that lefts to the community are not as bad. we have the latest on the fire. >> reporter: gasia, firefighters say they have gotten the upper hand although they are not releasing official containment numbers. it's clear there's no active fire lines going on right now, nothing like what we saw earlier

today when we arrived in this area earlier this morning. you can see the homes over here, the fire getting within about 150 yards of the home. firefighters were concerned about high temperatures and low humidity and the forecast of winds as high as 25 to 35 mph. they were very worried about all of this brush coming down to these neighborhoods and causing devastation to the homes. what has happened though is that the winds have remained relatively calm. they were able to save thousands of homes, they say, five homes completely damaged and 17 other structures partially damaged. no injuries other than one injury to a firefighter. so considering how bad this looked this morning, they really have done a good job with air assault on this fire, fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, seeing them dropping water and fire

retardant. >> can you talk about the three people who were arrested and how this fire may have started? >> reporter: it's really kind of a crazy situation. down here in south this area these three started a camp fire up in the foothills. they saw the fire get out of control and ran away. they were seen by a police officer who took them into custody. one of them actually admitted that, yes, it was their fire that got out of control. they were very scared and appall and apologizeed. they face potential felony charges for letting this fire get out of control that could result in three years in jail.

they are being held in jail on $20,000-bale. bill has been keeping on top of the situation there in southern california and here at home. when we saw those conditions and heard the numbers, we thought, wow. >> the red flag warning is still in effect for southern california. here is the maps. we have lost our red flag warning. it went away this morning. a high fire danger here. we took our live reporter down there and there wasn't a lot of wind and that's the key and why they are getting a handle on the fires. the draught monitor, this came out today. they had us as a severe draught a few days earlier. as we go into today, this index came up to extreme draught for the bay area and parts of

central california. so it's just another index. this index is one we're paying attention to, associated with the national weather service, and that's a big deal. sunny and warm tomorrow. the weekend, a dry forecast, and then slightly cooler as we go go to the beginning of the week. maybe a record tomorrow, but i think we're done with the records. tomorrow, very nice, temperatures around 70 again. this little guy, which earlier the models suggested could bring us some rain, it stops, cools us off a touch on the weekend and presents more of an on-shore flow. up in seattle with the game, this is the forecast. green is rain. it looks like the 49ers game

refinery fire in richmond in '012, but that wasn't enough for them to change some refinery rules. regulators from the u.s. chemicals safety board rejected a proposal on new rules for refineries. they would have changed the way they are monitored and forced them to fix potential problems. the proposal was made to prevent incidents like that fire at the chevron refinery. the oil industry opposed the new rules. concerns about the safety of personal information on the healthcare.gov website was the topic today. the hearing comes as millions of americans are concerned about data breaches by private businesses. >> reporter: like a lot of people i received this letter from target saying my personal information could have been stolen. the question in congress, if it's happening with big businesses, is it also happening with healthcare.gov.

by a surveillance camera. police and prosecutors say 37-year-old henrique had a vendor bender and pulled into the station. police say the video captures him appearing to punch the sergeant. the sergeant draws her weapon and fires. >> it's early to tell what this case would actually go for, what the punishment will be. all i can say as of right now it's serious and the consequences are also very serious. >> reporter: he entered a not guilty plea to four charges and faces a miss de misdemeanor.

>> whenever you have video in any case it's useful in the prosecution of the case. >> reporter: he returns to court on february 19. the officer who fired the shot is on paid administrative leave while the shooting remains under investigation. it's been a few days since a naked man walked right into the girl's rocker room at a cool in south san francisco. coming up in about 90 minutes concerned parents will have an opportunity to face their outrage over what happened. there's been about a half dozen reports of a naked man on or near school campussings around the city. the most recent was monday at south city high. a naked man went right into the girl's locker room room and exposed himself to five cheerleaders. >> our children need to be protected. to find out that a naked person came on campus exposing himself

is unacceptable to me. >> the school board meeting is set for 7:00. anybody with information about the naked man is asked to call police. a teenage boy is recovering today after his clothes got on fire last night. it happened about 11:00 when the teen was being dropped off at the bart station. because the teen has been working on cars all day and had gasoline on him, when the other lit a cigarette, he caught on fire. a teen accused of setting another teen on fire will remain in court. the individual suffered second and third degree burns. the judge denied a request to try the case in juvenile court. new at 5:00, learning from

tragedy. federal crash experts in canadian today talked about the bart incident three months ago that killed two workers. new safety recommendations to help bart trains operate more safely. >> reporter: rail accidents have leveled the national transportation safety board to call for increased safety. they say they should take steps to reduce human errors by crashes over the past decade. >> we see home accidents that are preventible every year. the most-wanted list, 10 safety recommendations. this is the first time it was included. the chairman said the board looked at the october crash where a bart train struck and killed two workers. >> we're already seeing change take place as far as procedures to protect those workers on the track. >> reporter: they renewed the call for the automatic

emergency braking system. if installed it could prevent train to train collisions and derailment. more details now. that accident that killed two bart track inspectors in the east bay happening last october during the second bart strike, and shepherd and daniels were checking on a dip in the tracks between the walnut creek and pleasant hill station when they were struck and killed instantly. a company has expanded its recall of beef products because the meat didn't undergo proper inspection. they recalled more than 41,000 pounds of beef parts,
