game. hello again, everyone. i'm joe fonzi. >> and i'm melissa galvin. >> welcome to this special playoff edition of 49ers total access. coming up on today's show this, is obviously a special time of year for any professional football player. some of the 49ers talked about being in the post season. >> he's one of the keys to the success of the 49ers offense and had a game-changing play against carolina. vernon davis was wired for sound. >> and they have a relatively short history, but the 49ers and seattle seahawks have developed quite a rivalry. what a run it has been for the 49ers to get to the nfc championship game, with road wins over both green bay and carolina. >> in carolina, a real game- changer was the touchdown pass right before half time from colin kaepernick to vernon davis. sometimes timing is everything, and in that game, vernon davis was mic'ed up. ♪

>> and i think sometimes when you get on the road and you're in a hostile environment and people are screaming at you, that's when you play better, because you know your back's up against the wall. you know they have their fans against you. and there's nobody there to support you. myself, my brothers next to me, the guys on the sideline, that's all that matters. we're out here to win a football game. that's what makes it fun. you don't have your fans screaming for you. you have everybody else screaming on top of you and it feels like the walls are kind of coming down on you. but those are the games you love. >> think they are fired up now, let's go. ♪ >> have fun now, fellas! >> come on! >> let's go! let's go! >> got to go into the game and no matter the situation or the circumstances, you know, these are the playoffs and you got to

. welcome back to 49ers total access. when you think traditional rivals of the 49ers, you think rams, dallas cowboys, maybe even back to the old days of the nfc west, the saints and atlanta falcons. >> you probably wouldn't immediately think the seattle seahawks, but in the last few years, those two teams have developed quite a rivalry.

>> reporter: the first time the 49ers saw the seattle seahawks was 1976, when the seahawks were an expansion team in, yes, the nfc west. in that game in the newly constructed king dome, jim plunkett threw a pair of touchdown passes to gene washington. the 49ers won 37-21. at the end of the season, though, the seahawks switched to the afc west and remained there for the next 25 years. there were some memorable games along the way. in 1991, the 49ers closed the season as the hottest team in football, a 24-22 win in december, part of a six-game winning streak that left san francisco 10-6, but out of the playoffs for the first time since 1983. steve bono played quarterback that day and this one sticks in my mind, because the winning drive and eventual final score to john taylor happened right in front of john clark and me,

waiting to do the post game show. the seahawks re-joined the nfc west in 2002, a year that became known for terrell owens, a football, and a sharpie. the 49ers swept the seahawks that year, 28-21 in seattle, 31- 24 at candlestick. some less than memorable games followed 2002. one game that stood out was in december of 2006 in seattle. alex smith bootlegged his way 18 yards for a score and a 24- 14 49 erwin. >> alex smith on the bootleg on the left side. i got fooled by the fake, and there he is running to the left sideline and he scores! >> reporter: two years later, second-year player patrick willis intercepted matt hasselbeck and didn't stop until he had gone 86 yards for a score. >> ball deflected, niners pick it up off the deflection!

patrick willis back up the right sideline! beats one man, by hasselbeck, needs a block, down to the 40, the 35, can he run fast enough? 20, 15, 10, 5, touchdown 49ers! oh, what a bonanza! >> reporter: final, san francisco 33, seattle 30. in 2009, frank gore earned another entry in the 49er record book. >> 25, 30, straight through, 40, foot race, midfield, gore to the 40, 30, 20, angles right, 10, 5, dives, touchdown! niners! >> reporter: his 207-yard rushing day is san francisco's all-time single-game record. >> frank gore to the house again! 80 yards! touchdown niners! >> reporter: 2011 marked a new spin on this intensifying rivalry. jim harbaugh had been hired as san francisco's head coach, and the season began at candlestick park against the seahawks.

ted ginn made harbaugh's debut a winning effort with a kickoff return for a touchdown. >> cuts across once, gap near the far side, 30, racing, 40, ginn midfield, and ginn is gone! touchdown 49ers! >> reporter: and then a punt return produced the same result, both in the fourth quarter. >> ginn does it again! ted ginn! you talk about electrifying candlestick park! >> reporter: the last two years have proven this is one of the best current rivalries in the league. ♪ ♪
