dublin and he leaves behind a wife who was also a police officer and daughter. he gains our -- begins our coverage where the deadly shooting happened alex? >> we are live in dublin, this is where that veteran officer was shot to death by one of his own partners and it all happened yesterday. it is a group of officers and all of them were searching a unit here in connection with a robbery case. and after they entered the apartment, one officer mistakenly fired that shot. tom smith was hit by the bullet and died a short time later art the hospital. the san francisco chronicle identified the officer who shot him. michael maze, a 10 year

shooting death of a police officer is the first time in history that an officer was killed in the line of duty. live outside bart headquarters, telling us how they remember their friend. >> it is going to be a difficult day, we are here near headquarters and we are just did see the police chief arrive just a short time ago and they asked the media to give them some time to grieve. we have detective sergeant thomas smith from early last year talking about an investigation he was involved in and smith's brother tells us he was 42 years old and has a young daughter. he was a great father and great officer and he is married to kelly smith, another bart officer and colleagues are in disbelief. smith was the nicest person and
