marin county where sheriff's investigators are trying to find the person responsible for this attack. >> reporter: these are text alerts sent out by the college. they say police are investigating a kidnapping and sexual assault that began here in lot 13. we are on the southeast edge of the college. as you see, a police car driving by and this is where it all began. it was a quiet friday at college of marin in kentfield, but there was a big topic of conversation on campus. >> thinking someone got assaulted here is really nerve wracking. >> reporter: the marin county sheriff's office says it was about 8:15 last night a male student walked to his car in lot 13. as it says on warning flyers posted around campus, i got in the car and realized someone -- he got in the car and realized someone was in the back seat armed with a gun. >> that's crazy. it's kind of weird. we go to school here. >> reporter: the gunman ordered him to drive to an undisclosed location, possibly near this u-haul store in milvali and sexually assaulted

him. >> -- in mill valley and sexually assaulted him. >> completely blown away. >> reporter: after the attack he went to this liquor store and asked the owner for help. the man was shaking and said someone tried to kill him. >> we have one of the safest campuses in the state and in the nation. we're really lucky. we're not skirted around high crime neighborhoods. it's not like you walk off our campus and there's gun play. >> you have to accept these kind of things can happen anywhere. you live around more than one place besides marin, you realize that we need to stop these horrible things from happening. >> reporter: the colleges sent out two text messages warning what happened and school police would not comment, but that officer justified his way through this entire parking lot, the lot in question, which the sign here says that the parking lot is not paved or lighted. right now there are lights going here in the parking lot.

john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. continuing coverage on flu fears gripping our state, state health leaders saying the flu season is escalating to dangerous levels all due to the aggressive h1n1 virus targeting young people. we've tracked the rising death toll since the beginning of the year this flu season and today the california health department confirmed 50 flu- related deaths this week alone. that brings the state total to 95 deaths, all but one of them confirmed as the h1n1 virus. last year 106 people died from the flu. ktvu's noel walker live in san jose where health officials there confirm two new deaths. >> reporter: those two new deaths put santa clara county at the top of the list for the bay area with the most flu deaths. this year's strain is hitting middle aged and young adults particularly hard and health officials are urging vaccinations. if officials are urge -- it

takes less than -- it takes less than five seconds to fight a disease that's killing young people. today the california department of the health released a staggering update that shows the number of flu deaths doubled since the start of the season to 95 today with an additional 51 deaths that might be flu related. to put that into perspective, there were 106 flu deaths statewide all of last year. >> flu is unpredictable and the only thing we can ever say is that we're going to have an epidemic of flu of winter. >> reporter: this winter is especially bad. >> get vaccinated. >> reporter: doing a story about people needing vaccinations and not being vaccinated myself, pretty hypocritical, so tim here is going to help me out. i'm not looking. >> nice and relaxed. take a deep breath. let it out. we are done.

>> reporter: are you kidding me? i didn't feel that. you're so good. >> thank you. >> reporter: health officials say there's no vaccine shortage and no downside to protecting yourself from being a flu statistic. here's a sobering thought. the flu season has not peaked yet. so things could get worse before they get better. noel walker, ktvu channel 2 news. >> ktvu has been tracking bay area cases of flu-related deaths daily. the number of deaths has risen to 30 including the two new deaths in santa clara county. that county had the highest number of deaths in the bay area at eight. police investigate the deadly shooting of a 17-year- old girl allegedly killed by her 14-year-old brother. the property manager at the china town apartment building where the crime happened says there are more than 100 video cameras there and at least one captured the suspect mario toliver jr. and his sister

justice in the laundry room. family members say the shooting happened after the two argued over laundry. the property manager did not tell ktvu today what the video shows. mario toliver has not been seen since the shooting and today his father pleaded for his son to return home. >> son, i love you. we all love you. we care about you, son. we know that it was an accident. >> oakland police believe the younger mario toliver is armed and dangerous. cal osha is looking into a scaffolding collapse that sent three workers to the hospital, two with life threatening injuries. the three men fell 25 feet when the scaffolding collapsed at a house on clayton street in the twin peaks area of san francisco. it looks like the scaffolding was attached to the side of the house but not supported from below. the accident happened at about 9:30 in morning. police say -- this morning.

police say permits were not filed for the work. cal osha is investigating whether the homeowner will be cited. bullying and beratement, one by one state geologists said that's what they faced when raising construction concerning about the east span of the bay bridge. >> was specifically directed not to look in areas that i knew there were cracks. >> i felt like i couldn't operate that professionally and morally any longer. >> the employees say they noticed issues with concrete, if steel decks, bolts, even the -- steel decks, bolts, even the tower itself. cal strains director insists the bridge -- caltrans director insists the bridge is safe because workers were not forced to stay silent about their concerns. >> i have no evidence to believe there was niko persian or bullying to -- any coercion or bullying to make repairs.

>> nor details now in the construction problems that started cropping up this past spring on the bay bridge. in march caltrans discovered 32 of 92 of those 17-foot long earthquake bolts failed after they were tightened. the bolts were made of poor quality steel. then hydrogen infected the bolts making them brittle. since the discovery they've been replaced with another clamping device. the waves were right and the best surfers in the world were there. ktvu's robert honda live tonight where innings this couldn't have been better -- where things couldn't have been better today for the mavericks contest. >> reporter: the celebration continues at this hour. grant twiggy baker took the top prize and as you might expect, mavericks turned out to be a great ride with a few spills. >> the 2014 mavericks invitationals. >> reporter: twiggy baker took

first place and the $30,000 prize beating out 23 of the world's best surfers who arrived in the past 24 hours once they were notified conditions were good for big waves. the first hurdle organizer jeff clark got over was a strong wind that threatened to postpone the event. fortunately the gusts stayed away and so did an early morning fog. the early waves were only 20 to 30 feet, small for mavericks. >> we got some really nice sets that are going to get nothing but bigger and stronger during the day. >> reporter: and they did and with it so did the crowd of boats filled with fans. >> all spectator crowds and vessels approaching the vicinity of the mavericks invitation will join the rotational led bill -- by the coastguard. >> reporter: some coastguards had to be nudged. >> you were just talked to by coastguard, weren't you? >> took a while to get everybody in the rotation, but things are going really good. >> reporter: even great

incredible raw video from news chopper 2 flying right over the surfing competition, really get a sense how big those waves are. look for turned our hot topic section of our homepage. an elementary schoolteacher was arrested for allegedly poisoning her colleagues with marijuana laced foodful investigators say several fellow school staff attended a party last november. several reported feeling sick after eating food she brought to the party. one woman went to the hospital where blood tests show she had thc present, the active ingredient in cannabis. police say the teacher confessed her involvement to people at the party. facebook is fighting back against princeton researchers who predict the social network's demise. facebook posted this graph today showing princeton is in trouble and will probably no longer exist in less than a decade. facebook claims the graph shows what princeton's enrollment will soon look like based on

they were on their daily walk with their two dogs when without warning they say three pitbulls jumped a fence and attacked them. they were immediately forced to fight for their lives. ktvu's rob roth sat down with them as they shared their frightening story. >> reporter: the pitbulls are at the antioch animal shelter while authorities investigate what happened. we want to warn you some of the pictures may be disturbing. john wadsworth's left hand is torn up. his wife charlene has a puncture wound. their hound has several deep bite marks and worst is muffin, a poodle who had the back of her neck ripped open. >> almost like shellshock. it happened so fast. >> the last thing i expected was to have to fight for my life. >> reporter: it happened wednesday evening. the four of them went for their usual walk. when they got here to minter lane a few blocks from home, three pitbulls charged them going for the dogs. one latched onto the poodle's

neck. >> she was squealing a death cry. her face was up at me. all i could see was terror on her face. >> reporter: charlene wadsworth said she was knocked to the ground, but she held onto the dog. wadsworth hit the ground and the pitbull bit him. >> he started chewing up my hand. >> reporter: he took out this knife and stabbed the attacking dog once in the ribs. the dog retreated and by then neighbors and the owners had pulled the dog as way. the owners of the pitbulls said the dogs got out by jumping over this small fence. that the dogs have always been friendly, never aggressive, but they do not have licenses. >> i think the community awareness needs to be if you have a pet, you need to realize how strong these dogs are and the responsibility behind owning a dog. >> reporter: our calls to police went unanswered today. it appears the fates of the pitbulls remain uncertain. the wadsworths want the dogs put down. the owners want them spared.

rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. a san francisco police officer charged with molesting a teenager from concord appeared in court today. 38-year-old richard hastings made a brief appearance this morning in contra costa county superior court. he faces nine counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a 15- year-old boy and one count of possessing child pornography. he's being held on $910,000 bail. he did not enter a plea today but is expected to return to court monday for a bail hearing and arraignment. a benefit got underway in santa rosa late this afternoon for the family of andy lopez. he's the 13-year-old boy shot and killed by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy. lopez was killed last october. at the time he was carrying a replica gun that the deputy mistook for a real automatic weapon. the benefit is at the arlene francis center. organizers say there will be food and several performances by musical guests.

money raised will go toward the lopez family. police had some hi-tech help finding a pair of alleged thieves accused of stealing cell phones and ipad from a palo alto business. they used the find my phone app. when officers showed up at the location, they found the man sitting in the car with a load of stolen items. he and a woman were arrested. hundreds of community leaders met in the south bay to brainstorm ways to close the hunger gap today. the goal of the hunger action summit is to find better ways to help low income families with rising food costs and assist those people who regularly go without food. research presented today shows the average low income family missed 25% of their meals. >> the purpose of the hunger action summit today is really to bring together about 200 community leaders, share some of the most innovative practices we've been able to identify in hunger relief both locally, nationally and even internationally.

>> the cost of food is a problem in particular in the south bay. figures show food prices in santa clara county are 8% higher than the national average. another warm day. we didn't get any records, though. that's good. we've had records every day this week so far. 72 in fairfield, 69 in livermore, 72 in santa rosa, so well above average. we're getting used to these numbers and that's how they'll be this bay area weekend. the story now is that jet stream, the big detachment of the jet stream from all this moisture. southern california is getting some rain. the dynamics from the jet stream is all the way out here. if those two were linked up, we'd be getting rain right now. as you see, our radars are spinning dry. that's how it's going to go the next few days. the end of next week there will be a pattern shift and that will lead to what looks like

maybe a few weather systems getting in here late next week, into the first couple days of february, but you see things starting to move in our direction. that's a trough, not a ridge, and it's in a good spot. hopefully this all transpires. tomorrow your forecast for clouds, cloudy in the morning and afternoon, hazy sunshine, nice day, temperatures a lot like today. so yellow will be 70s. this isotherm map shows temperatures using colors, lots of upper 70s, lots of low and maybe mid-70s in the warmest spots for your bay area saturday. offshore flow continues. so twee got the spare the air day tomorrow -- we've got the state fair the air day tomorrow. no red flag warning or wind advisories, but even though the air is going offshore it's slight and sinking which gives you inversion and inversion gives you poor air quality. 71 in napa, 73 fairfield and vacaville, 70 default nut creek, 68 in oakland -- 70 in

the nfl has fined seattle seahawks cornerback richard sherman almost $8,000 for his behavior in the final minute of the nfc championship game against the 49ers last week. sherman was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct when he made a choking gesture against the 49ers bench. sherman said it was directed at quarterback colin kaepernick. sherman was the only player who was fined during that game. ktvu viewers are sounding off about the fine for richard
