everything is moving out pretty fast although taking a beeline toward southern california. you can see how everything is coming down to the northwest. if you are heading up to the sierra nevada, things will be much quieter. fairfield 38. there is one. i think we will see a couple more. look for lots of sunshine today. there goes one system moving out really fast. if you are going to the tahoe, truckee area, everything is looking nice. sunshine and temperatures in the 50s and also 60s. things are calming down here but they will stay clear. sunny and breezy. clearing cooler. northwest breeze. upper 50s or low 60s on these temps here will take us into today and tomorrow. here is sal. we have a crash on the bay bridge westbound inside the tunnel. reported in the left lanes. three vehicles including an suv. and traffic is slowing down on the bridge. the bridge commute had been pretty good but what happens in

this situation is the metering lights at the toll plaza get slowed down and we will see a backup a little earlier than we might. the trip across the bridge that drive time has doubled and might even triple before this is over with. we might be looking at double that time because of that crash now blocking the left lane. i also have a problem in contra costa county that i want to show you on the maps. it is a pretty serious accident at the corner of deer valley road. medical helicopter on the way. very serious injuries in this route. a lot of people use it as a side road. this morning it is not a good option. and also getting breaking news in san francisco about a crash. a vehicle into a building. i just got this. this is a truck into the dpw center in san francisco. we'll get more on that coming up. 6:03 let's go back to the desk.

sal, thank you. new this morning frightening moments for people in a santa clara home. just a couple blocks away from the 49ers new stadium. janine de la vega is joining us live to tell us about their quick thinking neighbors who may have prevented a tragedy. good morning. >> reporter: those neighbors also have questions. the fire is obviously out here but firefighters are keeping their eyes on it. making sure nothing sparks up. as you can see it is completely gutted. there are alsofire investigators here interviewing neighbors. they were the first to call 911 to report the fire and they watched it spread. when firefighters arrived to the house around 1:20 this morning, flames were shooting from the garage. four people live in the home and were told they managed to get out before fire crews arrived. the fire grew to two alarms. neighbors say they threw rocks to wake up those inside but later realized a woman who lives in the house was in a car

parked down the street honking her horn. later they learned she had suffered burns. >> she is sitting in her car down the street. >> the fire was -- it was maybe about five feet. pretty small. few would have gotten my fire extinguisher, i could have put it out. between that here you are having this lady in the camry that is laying on the horn. and i'm like what is going on here? >> those neighbors had mentioned they thought that was strange because they were the first ones to call 911 and were wondering why the woman honking the horn hadn't called in the house was on fire. they say she had burns on her. the fire department is conducting their own investigation into what started the fire. firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading to

other homes. they say an elderly couple lives in the home. the woman who suffers the burns rents from the home. we were told by fire officials that right now the red cross isn't here helping but instead they are getting a lot of support. as far as the cause of the fire, again everything is under investigation. we're live from santa clara, janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. just hours ago the highway patrol arrested a man suspected of causing a deadly crash on highway 85 in san jose. the man was driving a nissan max ma and rear ended a volkswagen beetle. it flipped over. the driver of the beetle was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries. intoxication as well as speed appear to be a factor in that

crash. ktvu tara moriarty is at the vta station to show us the evidence. tara. >> reporter: the sheriffs office tweeted a photo yesterday of the man they believe is responsible for steeling all of this copper wiring. we put a call into detectives but we still haven't heard back. we do want to say here at the station there are surveillance cameras. that is where they pulled video. they believe this man wearing a blue jacket, khaki pants, and a black shirt stole more than $10,000 worth of copper wiring. if you have any information that might lead to this man's arrest, you are asked to contact the santa clara county

sheriffs office. this morning we have new information on an officer involved shooting in vacaville. our ktvu news camera was on the scene just moments after this morning's gunfire on leisure town road. investigators say the driver had a silver honda. tried to ram officers with his car. police opened fire. that passenger is expected to survive. the driver and the police officers were not hurt. that happened last night at the turn ever tore answer public housing project. it appears the two victims suffered several gunshot wounds. they were taken to san francisco general hospital and there is no word at this point on their condition. it's still unclear what led up to that gunfire. also this morning the search continues for a patient who walked out of san francisco

general hospital. police say 34-year-old valley gates was wearing a bandage around her neck. she was wearing a green jacket and burgundy pants. gates is homeless and spends a lot of time in san francisco's tenderloin area. the latest incident comes after another high profile case involving a missing woman at sf general. lynn spalding was found dead in a hospital stairwell. 17 days after she was reported missing. that tragedy led to a security overall of sf general. there were a few drops of rain in the south bay overnight. there is a chance of snow in the sierra. take a look at what it was like driving on highway 50. this is yesterday afternoon. this is at one of the chain control stops. there could be as much as two feet of new snow at the higher elevations. skiers love it. snow borders love it.

they've been trying to keep the slopes covered with man-made snow. sierra has only had 68 inches of snow. that compares to 480 inches in a normal year. despite all the new snow, the states snow pack is at at the lowest level since 1960 for this time of year. there is very little chance that melting snow this spring will help get rid of our drought. yesterday's snow survey shows california's snow pack is just 12% of average. >> 1977 is statewide the driest on record. we are quite a bit below that level. >> now the snow survey measures the amount of water that is in all of that snow. one area shows the water content was just 1.4%. we need it to be 18 inches. i said percent but i mean inches. with the mountain snow levels dangerously low but little rain

in the valley, the governor is pleading with all of us to save water. governor brown is asking all of us to turn off the water when you brush your teeth and don't flush the toilet any more than necessary. he called for a 20% cut back in water usage. last year was california's driest calendar year since the records have been kept. a trivalley water company is asking 200,000 customers to cut back on water use because of the drought. east bay mud wants its customers in the pleasanton, dublin, and san ramon to watch the governors request to cut back by 20%. east bay mud is due to announce its water saving goals on february 11th. wildlife officials may move to close the russian river to fishing. if it's approved, that would

welcome back. time is 6:15. the atlanta georgia area still slowly recovering from that winter storm but there is still a state of emergency in effect through sunday night. a lot of school districts still closed. meantime hundreds of drivers are digging out, getting their abandoned cars back. now that emergency declaration let the state of georgia continue using resources to help local governments clear the roads and deal with storm related issues. and also helping the recovery

effort is the weather. it is getting warmer. temperatures should climb into the mid 50s today. governor brown's wife says she was moved to get a flu shot following the death of a woman in sacramento. after reading the heartbreaking story of nancy pinnella went to cvs and got my first flu shot ever. doctors still encouraging people to get vaccinated. february is the peak of the flu season and it is not unusual for a second wave to hit in march or april. by our count there have been 32 flu related deaths in the bay area so far. 95 in all of california. updated numbers though are scheduled to be released at 10:30 this morning. time is 6:16. toyota issued an order to stop

selling toyota's top brand. that is as they try to work out a way to replace seats that are not up to the standard. toyota says there have been no reports of fires or injuries and toyota customers still say they are confident their vehicles are safe. >> i think it is great. as long as they rectify the situation and they do what they need to do to take care of the customers. i think it is fine. >> at this point nothing has been recalled. there is no word on how long the stop sell order will remain in place. yahoo says some of the customers e-mail accounts have been hit by hackers. yahoo has 81 million u.s. e- mail users. but it's not saying how many are effected by the cyber attack. 9:does say it is resetting the pass words of the accounts that were broken into.

yahoo says the attackers used a third party data base to get customer user names and pass words. jakes bay oyster company is suing the california coastal commission again. the company is demanding the state issue it a development permit. the state rejected the appointment. the oyster company is asking the u.s. supreme court to allow it to stay in business at its current location. sal, i really need you to fix what is wrong on the bay bridge. >> well, we are working on that. that crash has been cleared off the bridge. however, the damage is done. but i can see that just that crash being cleared out of the lanes has really helped. the traffic is beginning to get a little bit better on the span. but the metering lights had to come on a little early. let's check out the toll plaza. it is backed up for a 25-30

truckee rapidly. san francisco rainfall for january the driest ever. .06. 164 years of recordkeeping. not only was it the driest, but it was also the average maximum temperature was 64.2. that is a record. in the meantime tied the warmest at 56 .6. by the way there was a thunderstorm last night out toward fairfield, vacaville. maybe you saw it. around 11:00 last night to midnight. here we are setting the driest. the warmest. the drought monitor has gone from extreme to exceptional. this is really bad. as bad as it gets. things do not look better for any rain any time soon. 30 east side and 40s on the -- 30s and 40s on the temps. temperatures up in the

with that move. most of the cuts will come from its management and administrative staff at the san francisco headquarters. zynga also announced it is buying natural motion for $527 million. starting next month city group will require its junior bankers to use up all of their vacation time. it will also require them to take saturdays off but they are encouraged to check their e- mail. it is part of a financial industry move to improve working conditions. limiting work hours will help retain staff and improve productivity. a bay area high school is giving a big send off to one of their under classmen. under class woman. oakland police with a big change in policy. how this change focuses on car chases. sunday. today and tomorrow look pretty good. overall upper 50s and low 60s today. as one system moves out cooler but still nice and sunny. here is sal. we have a couple of different things going on right now that should grab your attention. first of all we will go to news chopper 2. this building this truck ran into the building here in san francisco along caesar chavez at the department of public works maintenance yard. the truck ran into the building here. the medics are on the scene. san francisco police are blocking one lane of caesar chavez. this is just east of highway 101 in san francisco and the traffic may be effected there as you can see one lane is closed. the fire department and the police are on the scene. i also want to move and take a look at the bay bridge. it is busier than it was. the drive times have doubled because of an earlier crash. now removed from the upper deck. but they will be waiting at the toll plaza from 20 to 30 minutes and another ten into

parked down the street honking her horn. she had suffered burns. here is a video we obtained of the fire taken this was taken around 1:20 this morning. that is when the fire broke out. it was taken before firefighters arrived. flames were just shooting from the garage and the second floor of this house. four people live in the home and escaped before the fire crews arrived. firefighters were to knock it down but after 40 minutes they were able to get it under control. neighbors say they flew rocks at the house at the windows to wake up those inside but later realized those people were already out of the house. they describe what it looked like when it first started. >> when i first looked outside, the fire was in the driveway. in front of the car. but it quickly spread to the house. >> i kept saying do something, do something. so he was throwing rocks. the fire was moving so fast i

the girls captive since she was 12 and sexually assaulted her two to three times a week. >> the psychological abuse and the physical abuse. the sexual abuse kept her in a mentality that she is still considered to be a child. >> police say the victim like jaycee dugard never attended school and was imprisoned in the backyard shed. ochoa has pleaded guilty and under the plea deal he will spend 22 years in prison. sentencing is set for february 11th. time is 6:36. san francisco police arrested man accused of leading police on a high speed chase through san francisco. the pursuit ended when the suspects car hit an suv in the bay view neighborhood. and that suv flipped over on to its side. drugs were found in the suspects car. both drivers were treated for

nonlife threatening injuries. uc berkeley place say a spill of hydrochloric acid will not effect any classes on campus this morning. it happened on the sixth floor of tan hall. investigators say two liters of hydrochloric acid spilled on to the floor. we're just a couple days away from super bowl xlviii. all eyes are on the new york area leading up to the super bowl, but in just two years the super bowl will be here in the bay area. as ktvu alex savidge tells us a group of organizers went back east and wanted to take some notes on the big game to get a feel for it. >> reporter: that is right. members of the super bowl host committee here in the bay area are in new york right now. they are getting a crash course on how to host america's biggest sporting event and they are trying to learn from their

counter parts. to see how new york and new jersey have planned for the big game and all of the events and festivities. the goal is to be all ready to go for 2016 here in the bay area. that is when super bowl l will be held at the new levi stadium. san francisco will host the nfl experience and most of the major events connected to the game. the head of the host committee says that is a similar situation in new york where the game is being played in new jersey but all of the parties are in manhattan. one major focus for local organizers, the logistics of moving hundreds of thousands of visitors around the region. >> watching how the nfl and the new jersey host committee handles the transportation component f will billion huge -- component, that will be hugely helpful for us. >> reporter: and another big component security which has

been beefed up around new york city. members of the bay area host committee are scheduled to do a four hour walk through with their counter parts in new york to learn more about what goes into planning and preparation for the super bowl. super bowl l here in the bay area will be a milestone moment. live in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. first lady michelle obama is waking up in san francisco this morning where she has one more event in her fundraising swing through california. no public sightings of the first lady but we did see the motorcade and a lot of tight security. michelle obama appeared at two fundraisers in san francisco yesterday. she told supporters who already paid a minimum of $500 to attend to write a big fat check to help democratic candidates in the upcoming midterm selection. >> she said i guess you are tired of you ask -- of us

asking but we need you to write a big check and max out. now. >> the first lady told supporters the midterm elections are crucial with democrats 17 seats away from winning back the house of representatives and six seats away from losing the senate. the first lady's last event is here in san francisco. it is a woman's lunch with nancy pelosi. tickets are sold out. they did go from $500 to $32,000. san jose mayor chuck reid's push to get pension reform on the ballot suffers a cult back. they are pushing pension reform as a solution top soring retirement cost. but now the group says they are going to court. they will challenge the wording on the ballot pressure written by kamala harris. but with that legal challenge the group may not have enough

time to collect the required signatures to get the measure on the november ballot. a couple hours this morning san jose will hold a send off assembly and celebration for one of its star sophomores. 15-year-old poe lee nap edmonds is the youngest fig -- polina edmonds is one of the youngest ever figure skaters on the u.s. team. her friends and training partners wished her good luck. they also watched as she put in a few more hours out on the ice getting ready to compete in the 2014 winter games. >> i'm just training as i always have been. just like it's for any other competition. but it just so happens to be for the olympics. yeah it is pretty cool. once i get there i'm really excited to experience everything the olympics has to

vandalizing a muni bus last december. antonioive vas has been charged with felony vandalism. the bus was surrounded by a crowd. this surveillance camera on the bus shows them spraying graffiti and shattering windows. they are still out there searching for more of the vandalism suspects. the obama administration wants the death penalty for that lone surviving suspect in the boston marathon bombings. the justice department says dzhokhar tsarnaev and his brother planted bombs near the finish line. three were killed in the bombings and 260 were hurt. they plan to seek the death penalty. one of those that were hurt in the boston marathon was 12- year-old aaron hern of

martinez. he was right near the finish line waiting for his mother who was running in the marathon. kathryn says she has no energy left to feel anything about tsarnaev. instead she is focusing all of her attention an her family. the chinese community celebrating the year of the horse. a lot of sound of that in the next month. last night business owners in oakland's china town set off fire crackers in front of their stores. it is a symbol of chasing off evil spirits before the new year arrives. people were buying up the red and gold decorations to adorn their homes and red envelopes to place money in. most of the time they are given to children and single adults. >> usually the year of the horse means strength and stamina. the first day of the new year

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. if you haven't been watching the dow pretty big hit this morning. it would drop. the dow jones now live look at the big board down 186 points right now. more than 1%. abouts same picture percentage wise for the -- still some concern. a lot of concern about the emerging markets. also a drop in the euro zone inflation showing recovery still weak there. that certainly effecting our markets. and walmart lowering its fourth quarter and four-year profit

expectation. people in the east bay got a chance to hear about a proposal to turn a section of interstate 680 into a toll road. the plan calls for lanes to be turned into a combination hov and toll lanes called express lanes. at a presentation in san ramon, transportation officials announced the era of building freeways is over. and it is now the time to make the roads that are already in place operate more efficiently. the express lanes would be free for the same cars currently allowed in hov lanes but solo drivers would be charged. a similar express lane is in use. plans call for the new express lanes to start opening next year. 6:56. a bay area company goldy blocks will be in the spot during the super bowl. a 30 second commercial almost air in the third quarter of the commercial. they make toys for girls encouraging them to pursue careers in math and engineering

and science. into it is paying for the ad time. it's costing about $4 million. of course the 49er fans wish the 49ers were playing on sunday. losing to the sea hawks is still a sore subject for the fans. colin kaepernick is on a promotional tour in new york. the pass he threw to crabtree was intercepted it was the right play to call. while he gives create to richard sherman for making a great play, kaepernick is not impressed with what sherman said after the game. >> to me it was ridiculous but if that's what you need to do to make you feel like a better player, you have to tell everyone i'm the best corner in the league, go ahead and tell them. people forget he went for 100 on sherman the year before. if that is something you need to do, go right ahead. we will come out and play football against you next year.
