coverage starts right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. we see it in our e-mail groups, we talk to our neighbors. it's happening. >> east bay residents taking matters into their own hands after a surge in crime in their neighborhoods. good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. residents of an oakland neighborhood say they've had enough of crime and are fighting back without the help of police. today they launched a door to door plea for prooeft security in their neighborhood. only on ktvu, christina spent the day and joins us now from oakland headquarters. christina. >> we can tell you there are 51 police officer positions not filled. because of that, this oakland neighborhood group is taking matters into its own hands. >> hi, i'm your neighbor. >> hello. >> a friendly visit by neighbors is the start of a new association committed to protecting residents in the lincoln highlands area of oefk

land's diamond district. the group is going door to door. >> hi. >> hi, you're about the neighborhood watch? >> i am. >> trying to get 100 people to sign up for a private security guard to patrol their neighborhood. they met saturday morning to plan their pitch before canvassing the treats. >> we've known about the crime. we've seen it on our e-mail groups. it's happening. >> the need for private patrols was spurred tuesday when an armed intruder shot and wounded an 81-year-old woman inside her home. sandy just moved to oakland from west la and wants to improve neighborhood safety. >> it's about everybody looking out for each other, protecting the neighborhood, protecting oakland. >> this group knows oakland police are short staffed, and they say they just can't wait on them anymore. >> no. we can't wait for that. >> but joeanne isn't convinced paying out of pocket is the answer. >> you're at the mercy of who those individuals are, and they can only be in one place at one time. it's our city's problem. >> daytime patrol. >> the group knows there may be

some limitations to private patrols like guards being unarmed, but they say so far it's their best bet at deterring crime. >> community in getting everyone taufking to each other so we can respond faster and watch out for each other. >> private patrols would cost residents about 30 bucks a month for a security guard five days a week and a group says they've already had an overwhelmingly positive response to this and plan to be back out next weekend canvassing the neighborhood again. reporting live in oakland, christina rendon ktvu channel 2 news. oakland's rock ridge district already has private patrols and residents will soon decide whether to keep employing guards. we told you in november about 600 residents paid $80 each for security to keep an eye on their neighborhood. the four-month trial period ends in mid march. a number of other oakland neighbors have all paid for private guards. fremont police say a security guard was the target of

a gunman every tli morning. officers responded to the el camino real bar just after 1:00 a.m.. a man who was asked to leave that bar earlier in the evening returned with a gun and opened fire at the guard. police say miraculously no one was hurt and the guard manage today chase down the suspect. safrs they arrested 31-year-old miguel similargas on suspicion of attempted murder. continuing coverage on the super bowl frenzy sweeping the country. we are just hours away now from the big game at new jersey's met life stadium, and tonight more than ever, you can feel the excitement. >> from the west coast to the east coast, we have live team coverage for you tonight. our john sasaki found people right here in the bay area shopping for televisions ahoefd the big game, but we begin with our own gasia mikaelian live in new york city's times square. >> heather and ken, things are a little bit warmer and a whole lot busier than they were when we arrived here on tuesday to cover the super bowl for you.

with just one day to go before the big game, everyone is busy packing in as much food, fun and, of course, football as they can before they head to the super bowl. 16-year-old kate have been best friends since preschool. tomorrow, they're going to the super bowl. >> people come up and they're, like, can we take pictures with you? we've been interviewed. this guy came up and interviewed us for his you tube channel. it was just so cool. >> you come to new york city, and you're the attraction? >> yes. it's so funny. >> the girls say they're having the time of their lives, and they didn't spend a dime for new outfits. all this was already theirs. >> you have to wear everything that you wear in seattle. you can't -- you have to -- it's all superstitious so same jersey, same sweatshirt, same hat, same plaque. >> the official attraction along super bowl boulevard were expected to draw soum 1 million people to times square over the past week. >> this is crazy what's going on

san francisco police arrested at least four people today at a rally for nudity less than a dozen attend -- attended the rally. the protest marked one year since the city passed the law banning nudity. organizers say, though there's growing acceptance of what it calls body freedom, and that they predict that law will be overturned. violators can -- violations, rather, can cost $100.

the ordinance makes exception for young children and bethat breakers. san francisco giants fans had their first chance of the season to meet the coaches and players on the team this afternoon at giants fan fest. as ktvu allie rasmus shows us, some people wait in line overnight. >> 5:00 this morning the entrance to at&t park looked like a campground. the first people in line got here at 11:00 last night e. >> it's fun and just to know that weir all giants fans around each other. >> by 9:00 this morning, the campers had company. the line grew and so did the anticipation. >> everyone in this line is here for giants fan fest. it's the fans' best opportunity to meet the coaches and players of their favorite team. >> our biggest goal right now is to get cain to sign my hat and romo to sign her hat. >> who do you want to see today? >> tim linscom.

>> as you heard, boos mixed with light applause. yesterday a lawyer for one of christie's former top aids says he has evidence the governor knew out of those deliberate lane closures near the george washington bridge. christie's office, though, released a statement again denying he knew anything about the closures. immigrants who won a california supreme court case to become a lawyer is officially an attorney today. >> i am the american dream. >> sergio garcia was sworn in this afternoon on the steps of the state capitol in sacramento. the supreme court's decision in january was the first to allow an undocumented immigrant in the tous practice law. garcia hopes the case inspeiers similar once still being decided. >> i'm super excited that my case inspiers, you know, across the nation. i think whether you were blessed with being born in this country or not, i think a lot of people are being inspired. >> garcia came to the united states as a child and picked

almonds with his father before studying law. a who's who of bay area women in politics celebrated a new stamp in honor of trail blazing congresswoman shirley. congresswoman barbara lee and nancy pelosi were on hand for the release of the shirley stamp. she was the first african american woman elected to congress in new york in 1968. she passed away in 2005. representative barbara lee says she first met which i sayholm for the first time in 1972 as a college student. >> i wasn't register today vote, and here at mills college, she told me, "little girl, you got to register to vote and get organized." the rest is history. she was the person who really gave me the inspiration to get involved in politics. and on this first day of black history month, google is honoring harriet tubman on its home page. in the 1850s, the former slave

helped more than 300 fugitive slaves make a perilous journey to escape. tubman later acted as a spy for the union army during the civil war. another dry day around the bay area. it was nice. it was pleasant, but we'd like to see some rain out there, mark. how is it looking? >> looks like we do have the change. not the big change you're waiting for, but at least we could be tracking rain showers for the second half of the weekend. today, though, lots of sunshine. it has been at least cooler and intriez conditions out there. here's the system i'm tracking. see the circulation up here to our north and wechlts in fact, point that out to you with this little arrow. that will be tracking down our coast over the next 24 hours. here's closer inspection right now, and the clouds already building up offshore so look for more cloud cover for tonight and here's a closer look at that system right now. loofks like that leading edge approaching kate up along the north coast. as far as live storm tracker 2, there you can see a little bit of activity in terms of rain fall, but nothing is showing up just yet. that could be changing first

thing tomorrow morning. current temperatures kind of cool out there. already showing you 40s. upper 40s for santa rosa. napa. san francisco 50 degrees, and san jose in the lower 50s. i know it's a bit of breeze out there. some of the current wind speeds from around 3 to about 12 miles an hour out toward fairfield. and some more neighborhoods a bit stronger out toward sfo and half-moon bay. san jose winds coming in out of the northwest. last check reporting ten miles an hour. super bowl forecast for tomorrow, lots been talked about other the past few weeks with the potential for heavy snow and very cold temperatures. tomorrow, lots of cloud koefr and about a 30% chance of some showers. take a look at the forecast for you coming up, and temperatures, in fact, have been up a little bit with forecast high. right around 43 degrees by kickoff, but temperatures in the afternoon before kickoff mainly in the upper 40s, and as i mentioned, chance of a shower. for tonight we do have this clouds increasing, cool out there. tomorrow mostly cloudy skies,

showers approaching the region. the extended dry weather pattern and partly cloudy skies. overnight lows will be starting out sunday in the mid 30s. widespread 40s, though, for san francisco, oakland, and mountain view in the upper 30s. so here's the track of this weather system, this area of low pressure offshore. at least the main impacts for us you can count on more cloud cover out there. mostly cloudy skies and shower chances have been going up. we could be talking about heavier amounts in the coastal hills, but in general, potentially a few hundredths of an inch to possibly half an inch of rain near the coastal hills. here's forecast model tomorrow morning. this forecast model increasing the probability throughout the day as you can see it 1:00 and even at the 5:00 moing in from the south. so we'll keep an eye on that. might need the umbrella, in fact, increasing chances for your sunday. temperatures for tomorrow mainly in the mid 20 upper 50s. san jose 58. half-moon bay 55. and a look ahead your five-day forecast. looks like a sun cloud mix.
