the couple says they did with the little girl's body. claudine. >> sarah and ryan's appearance before a judge lasted only minutes up there on the second floor of the napa county courthouse. and while they didn't say much in court, it is an interview they did with police that is providing chilling new details about what may have happened to three-year-old caylee. >> according to court documents obtained by ktvu, we know at least in part what they have already told police. according to court documents, under miranda, they admitted that the child was found dead by unknown circumstances. and for three days, they stored her body in a suitcase and then placed the body in a freezer. but they didn't say why. >> i would say they were both cooperative to a point. but beyond that, again, they've told their story to a point individually. >> documents confirm that when police found her, she was in bed and say she had been beaten

to death. but despite initial reports from police that there was evidence of sexual assault, that charge was not filed today. and without that charge, the death penalty is off the table. >> they are required to be special circumstances and based on the evidence that we have in front of us at this point in time, there is not sufficient evidence to support charges of special circums. >> they were given public defenders today. both will be in court later this month. this investigation, this process could take months. he was visibly emotional today. as he asked everyone to hold their children closer tonight. live in napa, ktvu channel 2 news. >> child abuse prevention experts say this case is a reminder that physical and sexual abuse are all too common. the family center in napa says one in four girls and one in six boys will experience some

see the police officer who 30 seconds ago began using a device to monitor traffic on sunset boulevard below us. that's where 78-year-old man was killed and all day, people have been telling us stories about the close calls they see on this boulevard. >> neighbors in san francisco's park side district call it an unsafe intersection. >> it's very busy always busy and dangerous. >> and today, police say 78- year-old, psi sack was killed as he crossed sunset boulevard. struck by a toyota se dan. >> we do not know whether or not alcohol or drugs played a factor in this. was it speed? it's all under investigation. >> it's san francisco's second pedestrian fatality this year. yellow flashing lights are activated at the push of a button, warning cars to yield to pedestrians. we saw many of them didn't do that or did so reluctantly. >> you know what is amazing. here with this investigation with several police cars,

people still are not paying attention to the roadway. >> pedestrian advocates say it's a notorious crossing. >> sunset is one of our high injury corridors. so this is one of our most dangerous streets in the city. >> neighbors here say drivers often exceed the 35-mile per hour speed limit. >> i don't think it really necessarily needs an entire stoplight, but something needs to be done. >> san francisco's transit agency tells us it received federal money to add new traffic signals, along this boulevard, with the design work to begin next month. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> police have fanned out in a san francisco neighborhood searching for a suspect who was shot at by police. investigators say the incident began when officers spotted a stolen sob and tried to pull over the driver. the driver took off leading officers on a chase. police say at 3rd and 19th, the driver tried to force his way

through traffic and damage several vehicles and even injured another driver. an officer tried to stop him and investigators say that's when the suspect droves at the officer who then opened fire. police say it's not clear whether the man was hit by the gunfire, but he managed to drive away. he eventually abandoned the sob near the housing projects on petrero hill. >> abundance of caution, we got the area secured so we can find this guy and find out why such a violent resisting for what was just presumably a stolen car. >> at this point, police have not found the man, but they did recover his jacket and hope to find more in the evidence in the car he abandon. >> rush is on to get californians to conservative most water agencies are asking for voluntary cutbacks. we started asking, how anything changed since the threat of a drought became a reality? ann ruben is live where she spoke with water agencies and

found out peer pressure may be the strongest incentive to save water. ann. >> people seem to be interested not just in their own water conservation efforts, but in their neighbors and as a result, concerned calls to the water agencies are on the rise. >> hal mack collects rainwater and saves you shower water for his garden. >> i have a little garden right here. >> while he is big on conservation, he's not big on snitching. still, there's this one neighbor. >> he doesn't really talk very much, but he washes his car almost every other day. >> a little peer pressure goes a long way according to the san francisco public utilities commission. >> everyone has a heightened sense of awareness. so we definitely encourage people if they see something that they feel may be a waste of water, to talk to their neighbors. >> good afternoon, this is lynn. >> they also seen a 300% increase in january.

with people calling into their line, either with complaints about water wasters or concerns about conservation. they are not alone. the municipal utility district say they have seen complaint e- mails on the rise. they have gone up from 20 to 71 per month. >> water is running all night long. >> and companies like water smart which work with municipalities to show how their water usage stacks up. >> they are creating a social comparison to each individual person. that motivates them to save water. they are going to take some action and change their behavior. >> san francisco resident can see why a little neighborly nudge might work. >> more people are telling people to conserve water the better. if you see more people doing it, then more than likely, you're going to follow suit. >> in san francisco, those

to respond to medical emergencies. it will put its next quarterly payment, about $600,000 into a trust fund. if the department can hit the goal for three months in a row, it can get the money back. >> right now, we're insent vising failure. we are rewarding poor performance. we keep doing what we're doing, we keep getting what we get. putting people's lives at risk unnecessarily. >> county officials say they don't blame the firefighters who have lost five engine companies over the last couple years. >> a soda tax is before the board of supervisors. several supervisors introduced that measure to impose a tax on sugary drinks. that would include sodas, and sports drinks. supporters say the tax would raise millions of dollars for fitness and nutritious programs. opponents say it will make an expensive city more affordable. >> it won't change anybody's habits, so why bother? other than it's an easy way to

make money. it seems like the people who can't afford it the most will be the ones most affected. >> that's fine. i don't drink soda. more water. >> just today, harvard released a study say people who get 25% of their calories from sugar have three times the chance to die from heart disease. $750 million to help wire more classrooms with high speed internet. it's all part of the president's connected initiative which aims to bring high speed internet to 99% of students within five years. contributions to the program include $100 million in ipads and other tools from apple, sprint, and at at&t are pledging wire lesser vis through their networks. accused of luring two girls into his home and molesting them. ktvu talks to the wife of the molester. the moment the mother started

she learned she will no longer have health insurance by the end of the month. ktvu explains why the fire district says there's nothing they can do about it. >> driving east on highway 24. >> pretty scary. >> makes kelly morris panic. >> on this stretch of highway where the veteran firefighter nearly lost her life. >> it was raining really hard. >> she and two other firefighters were responding to a fender bender on the side of the highway. one of the drivers tried to move his car out of the right lane. >> i went after him telling him, don't go out there, you'll get hit, before i even finished saying anything, you see the suv coming. >> the vehicle crashed into the crash scene striking morris, two other firefighters and a civilian. >> i was 10 weeks pregnant and that's all i was thinking. i was terrifying i was going to lose my baby. >> her healthy baby daughter was born, but morris' road to recovery was far from over.

she broke her leg and had to have the bones fused. >> this is the day of the accident. >> last week, a letter from her employer dealt her another blow. >> they can no longer contribute. >> the fire department won't pay for health insurance. >> it's a feeling of betrayal. >> the chefs declined to talk on camera, but he told me the change in morris' insurance has nothing to do with the district financial problems. he says the district is simply following the rules outlined in the firefighter's contract. >> and in state labor code, following all rules and laws. employees have the right to continue to purchase private medical insurance through cobra. >> it's unfortunate. >> cost morris $2,000 a month. with no pay, it's not an option. and worker's compensation only covers her injury. >> i don't know what's going to happen. >> she is left struggling to understand how an injury on the

job through no fault of her own could cause such professional and financial hardship. ali, ktvu channel 2 news. >> more details now, the fire district chief says injury rates have been dropping in recent years for his crews. in 2012, there were ten firefighter injuries that resulted in a firefighter being off work. in 2013, that number was six. in 2012, firefighters were out 271 days due to injury. in 2013, that figure dropped to 180 days. >> only on 2 tonight, ktvu spoke with the wife of the santa cruz man who is accused of molesting two young girls. we also heard from the mother of one of those girls. 67-year-old, richard lester pleaded not guilty today to charges of lewd conduct with a child, false imprisonment and assault with an attempt to commit rape. police found child pornography at his house. his wife insists her husband is innocent. >> i'm behind him 100%. i don't believe any of this.

he's a good man and this will come out. this will get straightened out. >> the mother of one of the alleged victims says she trusted brody enough to let him play with her daughter and another girl inside his home. >> he just went out of his way to be nice. different stuff started making me feel uncomfortable. he would wrestle with the girls and at first, i didn't know it was in the dark. >> brody is set to return to court on february 19. palo alto police are hoping neighborhood watch groups can become an effective tool. a community meeting will get underway in 45 minutes. police released the latest statistics for crime and car burglaries and home invasions. they are expected to discuss a home invasion where a man and woman in their 80s were tied up while three men ransacked their house. >> a state senator is pushing for undocumented immigrants who are eligible for citizenship.

senator ron was joined by a group of immigration rights groups pushing for action from the federal government. the resolution calls for changes to the current system which deports parents even if their children are u.s. citizens. supporters are asking for a more humanitarian policy that would keep families together. it's a nonbinding measure, but supporters believe california can influence the federal government. >> the opinion of the senate, but it's the delegation from california, which in the past has always been the bell weather for the rest of the nation and been influential state since we are the fifth largest economy in the world. >> the senate will have to take a vote on the resolution. after that, supporters plan to present it to president obama. >> the state of missouri filed a federal lawsuit claiming a new california law about eggs violates interstate commerce rules. starting next year, the california law requires hens that lay eggs be kept in cages large enough for them to stand

beautiful sunset. more clouds tomorrow. and i suspect tomorrow mostly cloudy all day as this pattern shifted south, the low pressure center is moving in and we have moisture of plenty that will last into the weekend and beyond. so here's the computer model. here we are wednesday at 8:00. so there's your 8:00. wednesday night into thursday morning showers. and there you are. that wednesday evening looks good. a half inch. and then 1:00 in the morning, more scattered showers, snow in the mountains and wet roadways, maybe a little bit of wet coming from the sky. so thursday morning's commute, you'll have wet on the ground and maybe a few sprinkles. and as you get into 1:00, more scattered showers. more stuff in the mountains. and watch this. friday, cloudy, a few sprinkles around. but remember those arrows i drew? it's just moisture streaming in. it's hard to pick out a weather system. it's just a ton of subtropical moisture and that's the best way to go for us.
