steve, good morning to you. we are still looking at pretty good conditions. especially compared to what we had yesterday. what steve just mentioned and the rain moving through coming through the bay area you should plan for another day or period the next few days of brad driving. slow driving. and unfortunately more collisions. let's go out and see what we have with the bay bridge toll plaza. it is light. until major problems. about a ten minute drive time getting into san francisco. as you drive on interstate 880 north and south traffic looks good. this is a little bit of a lull. and the driving is good. but just in case you didn't hear all the warnings from chp yesterday slow your speeds when it is raining. allow extra stopping time. and westbound 580 as you drive up to the livermore valley, it looks pretty good so far. the time is 4:31. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you. there are a few sprinkles in some areas this morning, but overall it is the calm before another larger storm as steve

mentioned. the rainwater causing some concerns this morning. ktvu alex savidge is live in san rafael with concerns some residents are having over some flooding. >> reporter: good morning to you. a lot more rain heading our way. across the bay area people are getting ready. let me show you what we have here. they have sand and sandbags available for people. worried about the possibility of flooding as this next round of rain moves in this weekend. the storm that blew through during the commute yesterday morning just a preview of what is to come. most spots picked up less than an inch of rain. but the rain will return full force beginning later on today and continuing throughout the weekend. the forecast calling for several inches of rain to fall in most areas. a true soaker compared to yesterday's storm. some areas will get more rain in two days then they did during all of last year. down in the south bay, preparations are being made to avoid flooding with this storm. the santa claire real county valley water district is

looking to clear debris from water ways to make room for for all of that water to flow through the area. as we bring you back out here to live picture. sand and sandbags ready to go for people. free of charge. in case people are concerned about flooding at their homes with so much rain expected to fall in this area. again a dry commute into work this morning. in all likelihood in most spots. it could be if a wet commute on the way home today. live this morning at san rafael. the national weather service says there could be enough rain over the weekend to trigger mud slides on the side of mt. diablo. that is because of the big fire that burned the eastern side of the slope last summer. winter storm warning takes effect at 10:00 this morning in the sierra. right now chains are required on interstate 80 from king vail to the donor lake interchange.

reported yesterday. both were connected to the h1n1 strain as well. that marks the 37th death so far in the bay area and santa cruz county. santa clara county is reporting ten flu related deaths. contra costa county has seen five while others are reporting less than five deaths. state health officials will give another update later today. doctors are also encouraging people to get flu shots. funeral services will be held in oakland this morning for 17-year-old justice tolliver. she is the oakland teenager that was shot and killed by her younger brother at the china town district apartment. a juvenile court judge is allowing the 14-year-old boy top leave his jail cell to attend his sister's funeral. but a probation officer must be at his side at all times. this morning's funeral is open to the public. however the family has asked the news media not to attend. the opening ceremonies for

make it so that all cell phones sold in california would have kill switch technology installed in the devices. experts estimate in san francisco in 2012 it cost $30 billion to replace lost or stolen devices. the principal of an all girl's catholic high school in the east bay is apologizing for a lunch menu that has created a nation-wide uproar. the menu was supposedly intended to celebrate black history month. it included fried chicken, corn bread, and watermelon. the principal says black student club members helped plan the menu without staff approval or permission. >> we thought this was a very clever way in their own way of celebrating black history month. it was as simple and naive as that. >> the school sent a letter to parents saying quote at no time do we wish to perpetuate

i've seen five to ten through sunday. this is through -- what time is it? 8:00 p.m. sunday. there will be lesser amounts to the south. santa cruz mountains will get in on this as well. 40s on the temps or low to mid 50s. a lot of cloud cover. some light rain popping up. nothing too heavy yet. still looking downstream. it will take awhile. the air mass is very saturated. so a little bit of fog and once this moves in, you get what is called a little lift there. that will definitely enhance along the coastal hills. i would not be surprised for a foot of rain. now the sierra nevada is a little tough here. this is a warm system so the snow levels start off around 5,000 feet. blue canyon seeing light snow. the snow level will go up to 6500 and maybe even 7,000 feet. wind advisories start tonight

water conservation efforts in san francisco have increased interest in rainwater tanks. the city is encouraging people to hold on to some of the water from this week's storms and reuse them for plants. jefferson elementary has a 3,000-gallon tank there. >> we harvest and store rainwater on sight for growing crops and vegetables in the garden. and we also use it for educational purposes. >> it's a great idea. san francisco public utilities commission says in the past five years hundreds of homeowners took part in a program in a do it yourself video. the puc headquarters also acts as a 14 story rain catcher with drainage pools routing water from the roof to the basement where it is treated from uv light and piped out to drought resistant plants. a private funeral will be

held at the church of st. e.g. neighbor yows in manhattan. hoffman died sunday from an apparent heroin overdose. a larger memorial service is being planned for later this month. a fedex plane had to make an unexpected landing. the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in a field in tracy after suffering engine problems. the pilot tried to make it to the tracy municipal airport but landed in a field a half a mile away. the pilot was the only person on board and was not hurt. a two-year-old child is expected to recover but that is after being hit by a car in oakland. that accident happened on 11th avenue near east 18th street at about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. the child suffered a head injury and a cut above the eye. the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. time is 4:55.

apple has pulled a popular bit coin app out of its itune store. it is the most popular way to transfer bit coins to each other. it has been down loaded 127,000 times during the two years it was in the itunes app store. apple isn't saying why it removed the blocked chain is still unavailable in the google play store. there are reports apple is developing its own mobile pay system that could be a rival for bit coins. nasa is sharing the first view of earth as it appears from the surface of mars. it is hard to see without the arrow nasa added but earth is the tine gnu blue speck. nasa says greatly enlarge views show a glimmer of the moon behind the earth. the oakland a's plan to meet with fans this weekend before heading off to spring training in arizona. the annual fan fest being held
