♪ things are dry this morning but a whole lot of rain is heading toward the bay area for the this weekend. how much is expected to fall and how people are preparing. a lot is expected. nothing yet. but it's on its way. it's starting to move into the north. >> a black student allegedly tour tormented by white students. we'll tell you about the concerns raised. >> plus supporters say it's a smart idea to prevent smart phone thefts. the proposal that goes before state lawmakers today.

ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning. we are live in san rafael this morning where steve just mentioned up in the north bay already starting to get some rain this morning and it's fortunate but it is also unfortunate. some of the areas could get too much rain all attaps. especially since the ground has been pretty dry. we will take you back out to san rafael. alex savidge is out there this morning to see how they are preparing. thank you for joining us on friday. go red for women. i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk about your weather and traffic. steve, we are ready for it. >> you better be because it's on the way. 50 to 60 degrees. snow levels will go way up over

the weekend. things are beginning to show themselves if you will in the rain department. already from fort bragg point aye that-- arena north. and the rainfall is almost too much here. it will really stack up. i've seen some projections from the russian river north. so cazadero will pick up a foot. but you can see everybody is in on this. there will be very impressive totals. especially santa cruz mountains. 40s to 50s right now. temperatures will start off mild and they will end up mild and the rain will really pick up. evening commute looks like it will be a tough one. maybe you will want to leave early. why not? cloudy rain. rain picks up. temperatures in the 50 to near 60 degrees. here is sal. good morning. right now traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving in many areas. and it's much better than it was yesterday. i do want to show you that

traffic is going to be a little bit slower at the bay bridge toll plaza. we do have a stalled vehicle there westbound bay bridge here at one of the toll lanes. it is already slow. this is a two or three minute delay for the cash customers. and no delays so far for fast track users. moving along and taking a look at the commute heroon interstate 8 -- commute here on interstate 880. traffic is moving along pretty nice here. 580 in livermore looks good and in dublin but we have slow traffic on the altamont pass coming through. just a little bit of slow traffic over the hill into 580. let's go back to the desk. it is coming. more rain is coming here to the bay area and a lot of it. the next storm should get here later today. and on top of that there is a threat of flooding. alex savidge is live until ann ray fell right -- is live until san rafael right now. that city is preparing for it.

>> reporter: they are preparing. things are dry right now but everything is about to change in a big way. and people are preparing for a downpour this weekend. here at the downtown san rafael fire station they are offering up sand and sandbaggings sandbaggings -- sand and sandbags to people. the storm that hit the bay area yesterday is just a preview of what is to come. most areas picked up less than an inch of rain. the rain will return later today and continue through the weekend with big-time numbers. the forecast calls for several inches of rain in most areas. really a soaker compared to yesterday's storm. some areas will get more rain in just two days than during all of last year. down in the south bay preparations are being made to try to avoid flooding with this storm. the santal clara valley water district is looking to clear away debris from water ways to make sure all of that rain can flee flowly.

while we may be dry this morning, things are about to change. it could be a dry commute. but by this afternoon you can expect the rain to begin moving in and a whole lot more of it on the way throughout the weekend. live this morning in san rafael alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. the city of oakland has decided to cancel today's first friday outdoor event because of the rain. organizers say they made the decision to cancel the street party because many of the outdoor vendors don't have tents to shield them or thrummier chance dice from the rain. the art murmur walk will still take place. now remember you can get weather updates on the go any time of day. you can post the very latest storm updates on our ktvu app and on our mobile website. an alleged hate crime add san jose state university and the way it was handled by administrators that was a topic last night on campus. the crime involved the alleged bullying of an african american student in the fall.

janine de la vega is joining us live from san jose top tell us what happened in that meeting. good morning, j nope. >> reporter: good morning, dave. it was a packed meeting last night of people wanting to hear how the university handled this alleged hate crime and wanting to know what could be done to prevent any student from being terrorized or discriminated against. last night was the first time a special task force met. and how to improve the racial climate on campus. the discussion is focused on the findings of this university report which stated four white students targeted their black roommate with written and verbal racial slurs, hung up a confederate flag and put a bicycle lock around the black student's neck. many questioned why the dorm advisors did not notice these flags over a five week period

and investigate authorities more quickly. >> there definitely needs to be more improvement. because a lot of students feel like it is not enough being done for them. not just african american students, all students. >> reporter: some students say they feel there is a campus culture that allows racial discrimination to go underaged. others want changing in housing. more sensitivity in diversity. students also express concerns about not feeling comfortable, reporting controversial incidents. the task force will meet again on friday, february 21st to hear concerns and bring some solutions. in the meantime, the four students charged with misdemeanor hate crime and assault are awaiting their next hearing and they are also suspended from the university. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:07. the napa county coroner released the body of three-year- old homicide victim kailey.

it's believed that kailey's paternal grandparents were called to claim her body. the girl's mother and boyfriend beat the child to death and hid her body in a freezer for three days. mark leno will introduce a bill to mandate kill switches on cell phones to prevent theft. the new legislation would make it so that all cell phones sold in california would have kill switch technology installed. it allows people to remotely lock their phone or even erase their data. in 2012 it cost $30 billion to replace lost or stolen cell phones. a website has been set up to help a marin county family dealing with a lot of pain and sadness. four-year-old boy has a rare form of cancer. it has spread from his spine to

his lungs. he came home from the hospital on saturday and on sunday his father died from a massive heart attack. friends and family have organized several fundraisers to help pay for the little boy's chemo therapy. we will set up a news link to tell you how you can help out as well. the homeless who sleep in their cars now have a safe place to park in sonoma county. people living in their cars can now park in this quarantined off lot in the southern tip of the city noyau county fairgrounds. they can also get food and have access to showers and bathrooms. however, not everyone is happy about this. the people that live near the parking area say they were blind sided by the county. >> could have drugs, could have alcohol. >> i woke up monday morning and there was tractor work going on. >> i apologized four times last

night that we did not have the time to reach out to them. >> it cost them $170,000. it is being run by catholic charities. it was set in response to the recent cold weather. the oakland a's plan to meet with fans this weekend before heading off to spring training in arizona. the annual fan fest being held tomorrow at the oakland coliseum. if you do not have you're ticket yet, you are out of luck. the event is sold out. 20,000 people are expected to attend this year's event. about 20 current players will all be there signing autographs. the event kicks off 10:00 tomorrow morning. the parking lot opens at 7:00 a.m.. we will check in with steve to find out how rainy the fans will be dealing with. but it will be fun. buyers are being warned to beware especially if you are buying a car in california. >> the first thing that goes through your mind i'm in the middle of the highway and my truck is not running. >> falling victim to those

now a 2 invests special report. it is a scam that could cost you thousands of dollars opinion. the california dmv is cautioning car buyers about odometers being rolled back. you might think digital odometers might be harder to pull off but state investigators say they are easier and it's happening more frequently in california than anywhere else. a recent car fax study found there were more than 295,000 rolled back vehicles in california last year. that is the most in the country. >> potentially around 100-150 plus. >> in previous years we would get just a few cases trickling in and now it seems like the flood gates a opened. >> the dmv recently helped arrest three men on charges of selling more than 200 cars with

rolled back odometers. investigators accused the suspect of moving the cars between the bay area and central valley to try to hide the operation. many rolled back cars are advertised on craigs list. the cars are often 14-15 years old. on our website at ktvu.com we have posted researches for avoiding odometer fraud. time is 6:15. happening today the opening ceremonies for the winter olympics in sochi, russia starts in just about two hours from now. we have a reporter there in sochi who is checking out everything for us. he will be back with us in a couple minutes. stay tuned for a live report. time is 6:15. back here at home a man is fighting for his life after being stabbed overnight. this happened about 3:00 this morning on south market street. when the police arrived, they found a man who had been stabbed at least once. he is being treated now for life threatening injuries.

so far no arrests have been made but police say that victim knows the attacker. prosecutors in the south bay hope an unusual piece of evidence will help solve a cold case murder. they are trying to find out who killed kathy zimmer back in 1989. she was found strangled in the backseat of her car. now what is unusual in this case is the quilt that was covering her body wrapped around her. investigators hope someone will see that quilt or even recognize some of the material used to make the quilt. >> take a look at all the panels. see if you recognize maybe a set of curtains that was made from some of the material or a pair of funky pants. >> investigators say zimmer was a devoted mother of two who was taking classes at san jose state when she left early for a doctors appointment and disappeared. if you recognize any part of that quilt, call the santa clara county authorities.

6:16 is the time. let's check in with sal. right now the morning commute. we might get some rain for the evening commute. >> yeah. and you know you might want to make a decision based on what steve has been saying for this afternoon and evening commute. we might get heavy rain. and that will make for terrible driving. let's take a look at some of the pictures 80 westbound. that looks pretty good getting down to the mccarthur maze and getting into san francisco. it certainly is better than it was yesterday at this time. there are no major problems on the actual span. however, there is a backup building. the metering lights are not on but there is still a stalled vehicle or a small accident here. causing a little bit of a backup. the backup or the drive time to san francisco is now about 15 minutes or so. this morning's commute on westbound 580 we had an earlier accident at 205. we are looking at 880 and 92 and 84 things are still looking

good although the slow downs are beginning to build. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. before we get started here, the best observer for information in san francisco is mike polanski. he always e-mails. me i've been e-mailing you back, but it's bouncing back. i've been getting your information. he just sent me the rain dance scheduled for dolores park has been canceled because of rain. [ laughter ] cloudy skies. you can see some of that beginning to enhance. most of this will be pam asked me steve will the evening commute be a mess? yes, it will be. look where this moisture is coming from. you and i know this is a warm source. we've already had a couple systems come in and set the stage. cloudy, light rain, heavier to the north today. and picking up by tonight and

over the weekend. we haven't had hardly any rain at all. the wind will pick up. this will be a lot of rain in a very short period of time. some of the projected rainfall amounts not too much today but watch what happens especially north bay and santa cruz mountains saturday into sunday. i've seen ten inches around russian river. even down to santa cruz mountains. there will be a very rainy pattern. 50s. it is very mild because we are getting a southeast wind. things are beginning to really show themselves on the radar. nothing too heavy yet. i haven't had any reports of man, it's pouring here. that doesn't mean it's not up on the north coast. all of this is sliding our way. 33 in tahoe. i know there is snow at the y. saw that on a twitter picture. the sierra nevada is dealing with a winter storm warning. starts at 10:00 a.m. and goes until 4:00 p.m. on saturday. blue canyon is reporting freezing rain. the snow level is going up. they are getting a south wind and temperatures in the 30s.

it might be rain below the passes by sunday. just so you know that. there will be measured feet and snow. wet snow. maybe above 7,000. 50s to 60s on these temps. again very, very mild because of the nature of where they are coming from. so the extended outlook if you are not feeing well and have a little bug, you picked a good time to hunker down. time is 6:20. happening today as we told you the opening ceremonies for the winter olympics start in just two hours from now. reporter ian lee is live in sochi where he is asking u.s. athletes if they worry about security. ian. >> reporter: pam and dave that has been a big question here is security and as russian officials prepare for the 22nd winter olympics, that is one thing they have been addressing. they've also been addressing

construction problems. hotels that are not quite ready. venues that are not ready and suspicious looking water. but everything will be ready for tonight's opening ceremony which starts at 8:00 p.m. local time. that is 8:00 a.m. your tile. it is supposed to be quite the spect call because it is the most expensive winter games. yesterday i was talking to some of the u.s. athletes and they are excited to be here. ready for their event. despite some security concerns. team usa arrives for the winter olympics, tired but excited. they now enter sochi and inside what is being described as a ring of steel. a russian warship looms on the black sea. military helicopters patrol the sky. all part of the 37,000 strong security force. last december two suicide bombings killed dozen. the big etc. fear is it could happen here but they insist it is safe.

>> sochi likely to be the most safe place in the world. >> reporter: when you talk to the various teams arriving here in sochi about security, they say they are not worried and just focusing on their events. >> when we were here in november and before then, there is always guards everywhere. i'm sure this place will be very secure. >> before we got to munich, i think it was a concern, but i feel like now we are here and everyone is wearing all their team usa stuff, i don't think it will be a problem. >> i just watched captain phillips on the plane on the way over, if terrorist takes me, i pity them. [ laughter ] >> reporter: the games are estimated to cost russia a whopping $51 billion. the president vladimir putin is placing the country's reputation on the line and the last thing he wants is another munich. even though the opening ceremony is tonight yesterday we saw some events kick off.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:25. we are taking you up to oregon right now. they are still digging out from ten inches of snow and another storm heading for portland. it is expected to hipt this afternoon. schools, businesses, and roads are already closed. this is only the second time in five years that oregon has had two large storms within a few days. time is 6:26. facebook promising to help the family of a young musician in missouri who died unexpectedly. >> my son passed away january 28th, 2012. and we can't access his

facebook account. >> john and lisa berlin's 21- year-old son jesse died in his sleep more than a year ago. the family wanted to see the new facebook look back feature video associated with jesse's account. they couldn't get an answer from facebook until john made a video, posted it on youtube, and a tv station in new york told facebook about it. >> we just want a little piece of everything. when he accessed his account, the most popular post. just littlelings like that would mean a lot to us. >> facebook introduced the 62 second look back videos this week celebrating its tenth anniversary. facebook is making jesse's available to his family and the parents say they will use it to help memorialize him. facebook knows they will probably get more requests. they are look into that possibility. a controversy in concord that is getting national attention and it all involves a

know. it's 6:30. thank you for joining us. >> we'll smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here. friday, february 7th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. time -- time is 6:30. good for people to know the evening commute will be tough. >> yes. the rain is picking up on the north coast and spread over the entire area. probably early afternoon. things are beginning to show on the radar here. this is very light. it is a sign of things to come here. when you see the dark green that is heavier. again this is pretty far north. there is a lot of moisture taking aim at us. the cloud and rain forecast does juice things up. it looks like wide spread rain begins to move in. especially around 5:00 and 6:00. and then it keeps going and going. 50s and well upper 40s and 50s. it is a mild air mass southeast winds. moisture source coming up

through the hawaiian islands. overall cloudy morning. and then more clouds and more rain on the way. you can see that. right there you start to get that back there. cloudy with rain. rain picks up later. it will really pick up very mild temps with a southeast wind. 50 to 60 degrees. here is sal. all right, steve, we are looking at a commute that is better than it was yesterday. we have a couple slow downs to report now. and we're also looking at drive times that are beginning to get a little bit busier starting in contra costa county looking at highway 24 westbound. you can see traffic here is moderate. the drive time between the walnut creek interchange is 12 minutes now. which is pretty enough normal and the roads are pretty much slick. i saw a bart train move through. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights have not been switched on but they should be soon. you can see the traffic through the fast track lane moving

along pretty well. it looks like they clear whatever was in the lanes out to the parking lot there. that traffic does look good over to the peninsula. 6:32 let's go back to the desk. it may not be raining where you are right now, baa lot of rain is on the way. parts of sonoma county could get more than six inches of rain by sunday morning. ktvu alex savidge is live in san rafael right now. i know they are getting ready for possible flooding. >> reporter: they are. they are gearing up for a huge downpour. here at the downtown san rafael fire station the sand is ready to go. they have sandbags available for people. if anyone has concerns for flooding near where their live. a huge amount of rain will move in later on today. the storm that hit the bay area yesterday is just a preview of what is to come. most areas picked up less than an inch of rain yesterday but the rain returns later today and continues throughout the weekend and you can expect some

big numbers here. the forecast is calling for several inches of rain to fall in most areas. that is a lot rain obviously compared to yesterday's storm. there are some areas that will get more rain just in a couple days than they did during all of last year. now down in the south bay preparations are being made to avoid flooding with this storm. the santa clara valley water district is working to clear debris from waterways to make sure all of that rain can flow freely. and again the morning commute may be dry, but by this afternoon, the rain begins to move in. live this morning in san rafael alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. time 16:34 -- time is 6:34. water con serration has increased the -- conservation has increased the effort of rainwater tanks. jefferson elementary school has a 3,000-gallon water tank.

they collect rainwater and use it for the student's vegetable guard opinion that aalso encouraged homeowners to install backyard cisterns. the national weather service says there could be enough rain over this weekend to cause mud slides on the side of mt. diablo. that side burned last summer as you know. most of the fire damage was on the state parkland on the eastern slope. the current rainfall rates are the heaviest since september when the flames burned vegetation on more than 3100 acres. rain for us in the bay area means snow up there in the sierra. it may be dangerous driving up to the mountains though but skiers and snow borders like what they see. coming up in ten minutes, the weather warning and the advisory you need to know about if you plan ahead for tahoe this weekend. the principal of an all girl's catholic high school is apologizing for a lunch menu that has created a nation-wide

uproar. the moan ewe was -- the menu was intended to celebrate black history month. it included fried chicken, corn bread, and watermelon. >> i thought this was a very clever way in their own way of celebrating black history month. it was as simple and naive as that. >> the school sent a letter to parents saying quote at no time do we wish to perpetuate stereotypes. there will be a special school assembly later on this morning. >> a funeral will be held in oakland for 17-year-old justice tolliver. she is the oakland teenager who was shot and killed by her 14- year-old brother last month. juvenile court judge will allow the 14-year-old boy top leave his jail cell to go to his

sister's funeral today. however a probation officer will be at his side at all times. the funeral today is open to the public, however, the family has asked the news media not to come. people in berkeley are taking to the streets to show they are fed up with violence and crime. last night was the third time the church based group organized a march to pass out safely leaflets. they marched through the -- >> i wish they would have just built this up a little bit more. i didn't see a sign for anything like this in our area. but if students knew about this, they would come out. >> crime in berkeley has been declining until 2012. crime is now up. police also investigating a report that a male graduate student instructor sexually assaulted a 22-year-old female student. according to a crime alert released by campus police, the

female student says she was sexually assaulted by the student instructor. no arrests have been made because the case is still under investigation. time is 6:37. google says it hasn't decided if it will keep offering a free private ferry for its employees in san francisco and the east bay. google started testing the idea on ferry's similar to this one last month. the final day of the experiment is today. they will pull together all the information before they decide if this becomes a permanent idea. that could happen as soon as next week. san francisco is asking the public for help in deciding which muni bus stop google buses should be allowed to use. from now until february 23rd the public can use this interactive online map to suggest which stops should knot be used by the private buses and say why. you can also suggest alternative stops that should be used instead. there will be public hearings where you will get a chance to

comment. right now it is 6:38. there is a bizarre incident at a bay area shop. >> has your cell phone ever been stolen? new legislation unvailed in san francisco may help put a stop to that. >> right now traffic is getting busier at the bay bridge toll plaza because they have turned the metering lights on. we'll let you know more about the drive times where you are coming up. >> cloudy skies over us. rain beginning to pick up to the north but it's really going to pick up later on. we'll take a closer look at timing and amounts which are really off the chart.

happening today an announcement in san francisco this morning about new legislation to mandate kill switches on cell phones. ktvu tara moriarty is in san francisco with why there is such a push for this new technology. >> reporter: having your cell phone lost or stolen is not only unnerving but it can be a hassle. that is why state senator mark leno is proposing this new legislation that would put a stop to that. it would require all smart phones sold in california or shipped to the state to have kill switch technology installed. the kill switch would allow

people to remotely lock their phone or erase information rendering it inoperatable. >> in the long run i think it would be a good thing to have. you know. and that way thieves know once they have it, it is useless. >> reporter: the wireless association says a permanent kill switch does have serious risk including vulnerabilities to hackers. experts estimate that in 2012, it cost consumers $30 billion to replace lost or stolen phones. senator leno and district attorney george gascon as well as several law enforcement officials will talk about the bill at 10:00 this morning at the state building and then it will billion officially introduced come this spring. live from san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:43. oakland police officer may possibly lose this job after a bizarre incident that happened

at a san francisco restaurant. it happened early sunday morning at this ihop restaurant. ktvu news has been told 24-year- old kevin kelly was off duty when he allegedly pulled out a gun inside the restaurant to impress a waitress. >> my understanding from the victim is that the firearm was brandished at her and toward the sky. toward the ceiling of the restaurant. both oakland and san francisco police are promising a full investigation. a fresno man is in jail facing felony charges in a frightening incident involving a palo alto police officer. police say 34-year-old ryan goodson tried to grab the police officer's gun during a violent struggle on lighten avenue yesterday afternoon. the gun stayed in the officer's holster and the suspect could not pull the trigger. two other police officers came to the scene moments lighter.

they used a stater to subdue -- they used a taser to subdue the suspect. malfunctioning sign may be to blame for an overnight fire in san rafael. it started just after midnight at an empty two story office building. firefighter's say they had a tough time fighting the flames since it was burning in a remote area. president obama will announce a new effort to help american farmers sell more of their products abroad. the president is traveling to michigan state university later today. while he is there he will sign the farm bill recently passed by congress. and he will unvail new details in the made in rural america initiative. it's designed to connect farmers and rural businesses to help sell their products and services abroad. time is is 6:45. a couple weather alerts if you plan to head to the sierra this weekend a winter storm warning

something is happening in mountain view. >> that is right we do have breaking news. police search under way near 85 and highway 101 in a neighborhood just south of highway 101. i put the little blue arrow on it here. this police search is going on on month see toe avenue at an apartment complex. police are looking parented -- are looking for a wanted suspect. two people are in custody already. the third one was outstanding. ktvu janine de la vega is arriving on the scene. she is getting briefed by police. the pio is on the way out there as well. we'll let you know what is going on in this neighborhood in mountain view coming up. let's go to the toll plaza. it has cleared out. they turned the metering lights on at 6:30. there was a backup and now it is gone. i think people may have been a little shy after steve's forecast. steve said it will be raining a

little hard. this is a look at interstate 880 north and southbound the traffic here does look good. the man with the forecast is steve paulson. could you work from home, sal? >> i would if i could. >> i would too. we have a lot of cloud cover over us. rain is beginning to pick up on the north coast. as we head toward even late morning or early afternoon, things are definitely on the way. things are already beginning to show up on radar. i know in the north coast it is beginning. this is very light. you see the light green that is not much. but it's coming up from the hawaiian islands. so it is a warm source. we've had pretty good rain as you know yesterday. and everything now is set for what looks to billion too much rain. cloudy, light rain heaviest to the north. saturday looks like an all day rainer with another impulse coming in on sunday.

steady to heavy rain. i'm sure there will be urban and small stream flood advisories by the national weather service in monterey. rainfall projections are not that big today and they get almost too much as we head into the weekend. we are looking five to six inches of rain in santa rosa by sunday afternoon. you know and i know if you live up there, you can almost double that. cazadero for some. five to ten inches of rain look possible over the weekend to the north. a lot of rain for all of us here. this is your cloud, rain forecast. things pick up by this afternoon. i do think it will be a wet commute. if you want to leave early, it makes sense to me. here comes the heavier rain on saturday morning when you start to see that. watch how it plows into the north bay and keeps going and going. there is saturday night and continues all the way into sunday so it's almost impossible to time these. if i was to say it's a broad brush forecast cloudy with rain. some of that will be really

heavy. a break maybe late sunday early monday. but there is a lot of moisture coming across the pacific. 50s on the temps or 40s. there is a mild system. there is a warm system. nothing too far yet but you can see it is getting closer and closer. that almost give us a cloudy pattern. here's where the rain line right back there. that will start to move back in. 33 in tahoe. it is very mild. there has been freezing rain at blue canyon. that is the worst weather. winter storm warning starts at 10:00 a.m.. the snow level will go up, up way up. they will measure it in feet. it will be wet snow. wind advisory starts tonight over the passes. snow level will be on the warm side. rain picks up later. by tonight it will really pick up. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. it will be warmer to the south. antioch, brentwood, oakley. walnut creek 56.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:55 is the time. checking in on the numbers. boy the future is fluctuated quite a bit. now that the markets are open live look at the dow jones. up almost 50 points. still a lot of concern about the global economy though and some analysts coming out saying the tech sector is over valued. we are keeping an eye on some of those stocks. for the second month in a row the monthly jobless report has disappointed economists. this morning the labor department announced 113,000 new jobs were added in january. that is sharply lower thans average for last year. the unemployment rate did decline a bit to 6.6% but that

is because many discouraged job seekers have stopped actively looking for work and they are not counted in those numbers. all right we are checking in on linked in stock as we mentioned. that stock this morning one to watch. it is down $20 a share right now. or close to 9%. that is after the mountain view based company surprised investors with the fourth quarter reports. it also is cutting the first quarter in full year guidance. time is 6:56. power outages are a big problem. huge in parts of the u.s.. and east coast ice storm knocked out electricity to a half a million homes and businesses in pennsylvania and maryland. these allergies were worse than during super storm sandy. they hope to get the power back on by the end of today but some people may not get their power back until next week. here in california we may have more flex alerts in the future.

cal issued a state-wide alert yesterday because there is a shortage of natural gas. the alert was prompted by all the freezing weather back east and also in canada. cal ice manages the state's power grid. they are urging everybody to save electricity and natural gas meaning turn off any lights you don't need or heaters and if you don't have to use a large appliance, don't use it. a credit card offer to a bay area woman is generating a lot of attention on social media. this litter was addressed to quote and i'm coating -- offered her apologies. they say the offensive language was probably added to her name in a data base sometime between 2004 and 2008. she says she is still not sure
