now at noon, the first major storm of the winter season is moving into the bay area. i'll show you how much rain you are expected to get in your area by the end of the weekend coming up. breaking news out of san francisco where one person is dead. another has been taken to the hospital after a giant slab of granite fell on them. we'll have the live report. and we're learning more details ability the attempted hijacking and bomb threat in which a passenger tried to divert an airplane to the olympic host city.

we are on storm watch as the bay area braces for a much- needed rainstorm. in some areas the umbrellas are already out and residents are filling up the bags to prevent -- sandbags to prevent flooding. drop anywhere from an inch to nearly a foot of rain and we are tracking the storm. but first, we have breaking news out of san francisco where an industrial accident has killed at least one person. ktvu's david stephenson joins us live and david what happened? >> reporter: well, good afternoon tori. it happened just past the overpass. you can see behind me over there, this is being called an industrial accident. we were told earlier one person dead and another with severe injuries at a granite company just again beyond that overpass where there were fire trucks on the scene up to about 15 minutes ago. this is the site of a company called cgi granite. it's listed as a granite wholesaler. the fire department tells me

they got the call about 10:30 this morning and when they responded they found shattered chunks of granite and at least two severely injured workers. >> seems we have an industrial accident that they were unloading some granite off the -- the trucks. and it looked like it slipped and several people were crushed underneath the granite. >> reporter: and the latest update we're hearing from the fire department is that two people were indeed killed. one of them had been transported to the hospital with severe injuries. it appears he or she may have passed away. traffic along one lane of courtland avenue was shut down in one lane for a couple of hours as the fire department worked the scene. cal osha is also investigating and we reached out to the owners of the company but they declined to speak to us a than about this accident. -- this afternoon about this accident. or noting -- reporting live in san francisco, david stephenson, ktvu channel 2 news. a football player collapsed and died this morning for uc berkeley. the athletic department says ted agu was taking part in

conditioning drills at the time. he was rushed to the hospital. agu was a 21-year-old defensive lineman from bakersfield headed for his senior season this fall. head football coach sonny dikes issued a statement saying quote -- now to storm watch. it's cloudy and gray and the rain is moving in. this is a live look towards the bay bridge from san francisco. we are on storm watch with ktvu team coverage. brian flores is in the north bay where the rain is alreadying down. we begin -- coming down. we begin with rosemary r usc o. >> yes tori generally light. least take a look and you can see from one end of the bay area to the other we are seeing some of that light rain started moving in during the early morning hours and i expect it's

going to actually become a little bit more widespread and own heavier into the afternoon. taking a look at some of the moderate raintight, you can see coming up off the -- rain at this time, you can see coming up off the coast in-between areas near half-moon bay and farther south, if i do a little shift here we have moderate rain falling over palo alto area. this tip of cell is capable of producing anywhere it looks hike .3 of an inch to a half inch per hour, now this storm is going to continue to move through. the cells will continue to move through and if not just sitting stationary. so that's what's going on over the bay area and take a look. we've got some snow in the mountains here down to about the 4500 feet. in-between areas like baxter and immigrant gap. this is going to be rising over the course of the weekend because the storm that's moving in is a relatively warm storm carrying a lot of moisture. by the end of the weekend the possibility of several inches of rain. with that said, you definitely

can count on those dangerous roadways when you're traveling. the possibility of even some mudslides near the fire burn areas and urban and small creek flooding is definitely a possibility with clogged drains, you are going to find some flooding near the parks. that to be aware of for the weekend. coming up a look at how much rain is expected for the area by sunday. coming up. now people in the north bay are getting ready for the rain. ktvu's pliant flores is -- brian flores is live in san rafael. up to a foot brian? >> reporter: no question about that tori can it's raining right now here in the north bay. they are expecting the brunt of the rain this weekend. and because it's been dry for so long, that means many people here are getting ready. now after a little break this morning it began raining here at san rafael a little bit after 8:00 this morning and across the bay area as well. according to the national weather service, they are predicting 8 to cinches of rain in the -- 10 inches of rain in the coastal mountain ranges of the north bay and that means a lot of rain in a short period

of time basically. the national weather service also saying standing water is likely and storm drains could be clogged as well. for the most part people here say the rain is a welcome sight but they are also concerned as well. >> i want to protect my garage and my basement. my basement floods terribly. so -- and i'm getting a new sump pump and i'm afraid it might not work. and getting 12 inches of water in your basement is not fun. >> i think the rain is definitely a welcome sight. especially given the situation in tahoe it's nice to actually get some snow. and yes, so -- i'm flood to see it -- glad to see it. >> reporter: now the rain also means good business for some local hardware stores that were ready for the rain. actually back in december. we stopped by jackson's hardware store in san rafael. on a typical rainy scene they would sell out of items but they're ready and already seeing a boost in rain gear sales. >> they're buying rain suits and hats and we've had a few people even who are heading up

to tahoe who are you know picking up warm weather gear. and clothing and all. but we do expect to sell more tarps and you know plastic and other you know rain related things as it keeps on coming down. >> reporter: and speaking of coming down, the rain is coming down currently right now here in san rafael. we have spoken to a lot of people who are taking more precautions especially on their automobiles this morning. we mentioned this on mornings and mornings on 2, we saw a lot of accidents yesterday. we spoke to one person who says that she's getting her tires changed because she saw way too many accidents out there. keep it easy on the roads this weekend. it's going to be a soggy one out there. we're live here in san rafael. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> new tires are a great idea. and new windshield wipers too would help also. well, b.a.r.t. says the first big rain of the season caused a leak at its civic center station in san francisco. a spokeswoman says the drain above the station on muni

property tends to get clogged during the first heavy rain and the overflow drips into the station. now the leak is not affecting service but you can see b.a.r.t. has the slippery area coned off. our team coverage continues now in the south bay where bags are being -- sandbags are being handed out in preparation for the weekend's big storm. ktvu joins us live to let us know what's happening down there. good afternoon janine. >> reporter: good afternoon tori. it's been raining on and off for the past hour. it's light, but it's enough to get these bags wet. -- sandbags wet. you can see people are here picking up sandbags, they are great for flock -- blocking the flow of water. now all morning people have been coming to the corporation yard on center road in san jose to pick up sandbags in preparation for the storm. there's a limit to 20 per vehicle and they're available at various pickup stations throughout the county. the santa clara valley water district is providing them free to anyone who's concerned about flooding. while the peninsula are

expected to get -- aren't expected to get hit as hard as the santa cruz mountains, some want to be sure they protect their homes. >> the water comes under the door. and comes in and hits -- hits the floor and the sub flooring. and you know, it's a mess. and to -- prevent further -- any damage i'm going to suck up that water outside. >> reporter: at lakewood elementary school in sunnyvale, the maintenance manager for the district picked up bags earlier and lined the campus with them. the grading on the cement walkways has been known to cause flooding in classrooms and school officials wanted to be sure the rain didn't cause a mess for staff and students. the presence pal described what it looks like in the past. >> really big puddles. some of the teachers called that lake lakewood over there. and keeping kids from getting out of it but also just -- it just gets in the way of moving from classroom to classroom. >> reporter: and physical you go to -- if you go to a sandbag station, be aware the bags are

a full court press today to get kill switches in cell phones. just in the past two hours, state and local officials announced legislation to force smart phone makers to adopt the technology. ktvu's tom vakar is live in san francisco with a riding tide of thefts prompted this proposed law. tom? >> reporter: well, as marvelous as this technology is, unfortunately it draws criminals like bees to honey -- is the same situation. as marvelous as it is, if san francisco's state senator mark leno has his way, by the end of this year, smart phone makers will be required to have kill switch degree knowledges in their phone. he citizen -- technology in their phones. he says such technology would render the phones unusable for anything but a paperweight. cell phone and tablet thefts account for up to 40% of all the crimes in the nation. more than two-thirds of the crime in san francisco and oakland and much of it involving violence. but say all the assembled

officials, cell phone carriers the people that i pay your bill to have opposed such technology saying it would make problems like hacking a problem not an issue in australia. >> this is one of the few areas in the criminal justice system where the technological solution can make a tremendous difference. there's no argument other than profit. >> i would encourage any one of the carriers to step forward to increase their own market share. to say we can do this. and we value arecas employers and we value our customer -- our customers and we value our customers' safety and we have no intention of profiting off of the consumers' vaporization. >> reporter: in other words more phone thefts and more phone sales. it's common for phone theft victims to be strong armed or beaten up. a few have even been killed because the resale market for these phones is so lucrative, a phone can fetch up to three or fume times the value here overseas -- four times the

value here overseas. we have a developing story now out of turkey. that's where special forces have taken a man into custody on board a pegasus airlines plane at istanbul airport. authorities say it was going from ukraine to istanbul when the man tried the hijack it and divert it to the site of the winter olympics. sochi, russia. by saying there was a bomb on board. the plane continued to istanbul anyway and there's no indication any explosives were found on board. protestors meanwhile are gathered right now outside the russian consulate on green street in san francisco. we're going to show you some live pictures fright now of the scene. the demonstrators want to show their support of the lgbt community in russia. it comes a day after the united nations condemned russia's laws banning what the russians call gay propaganda. many athletes said the sochi winter olympics both gay and straight have spoken out

against russia's anti-gay policies. ling and google is using its home page the speak out against russia's law restricting gay rights activities. on its opening page is a rainbow colored backdrop featuring artwork of winter olympic sports. beneath that is the section of the olympic charter that says -- usually the goodable changes at -- google doodle changes at midnight but it's keeping this one up longer. california's judicial branch is making public -- is taking public comments on a proposed rule that would ban judges from acting as boy scout leaders. in 1996, the california supreme court banned judges from belonging to groups that discriminate based on sexual orientation. but had an exemption for nonprofit youth groups. now it's proposing to remove that exception. the boy scouts accept homosexuals as members but not as leaders. organizers for last year's bottle rock festival in napa

filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. the court documents say br festivals is $4 million short of paying its bills from last year's concert. the five day event took in about $11 million. but bankruptcy documents suggest the festival paid the performers too much. and another production company has reportedly purchased the rights to the festival and will stage another one in may. the sierra is under a winter storm warning. it's in effect above 5,000 feet and scheduled to expire tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. even before dawn though. travelers along interstate 80 had to deal with the winter weather. >> put the chains on before you go through. we were in the valley. it's rain all day. and now we got snow all the way to idaho. >> the snowy weather is expected to last through the weekend bringing as much as 4 feet of snow above 7,000 feet. and here in the bay area, there could be enough rain falling to trigger mudslides on

the side of mount diablo that burned last summer. most was on state parkland on the eastern slope of the mountain. current rainfall rates are the heaviest since september and that was when flames burned vegetation on more than 3100 acres. and we are gearing up for wet brie zeh weather for the -- breezy weather for the entire weekend. back to storm tracker 2 and you can see the light rain is falling. it moved in earlier this morning and some areas already reporting a few one-hundredths, .13 in areas like santa rosa. almost imparter of afternoon inch reported in areas right around sonoma county. we've got some new moderate cells that just east of milpitas just in the last ten minutes and shifted into the hills. light to moderate rain expected for today i think it will be a little bit heavier into the evening drive. so it could be a bit messy. i've turned off the rain and showing you just the clouds

here. the water vapor. we keep talking about this relatively warm storm bringing in a lot of moisture. i'm going to get back about as far as i can. far beyond hawaii there you can see that train of moisture. so again, coming all the way from the tropics happens now and again and when it does, that moist air moving through the area going to bring us day after day after day of rain. all the way through sunday. and by the end of sunday, this is what we are expecting some of these storm totals the look like with the north -- to look like with the north bay receiving most of the rain. 7 inches and above. anywhere from 8 to 10 inches for the coastal hills and over parts of the central bay anywhere from 2 to 4 inches. and into the south bay perhaps 2 to 3 inches expected there. so quite a bit of rain with little letup. earlier in the newscast we were talking about the possibility of flooding. so now you can obviously see why there's definitely a possibility there. if we pick it up for you this morning where we're dealing with -- or afternoon, we've crossed over into afternoon light rain by 6:00 or so. still mostly wet. perhaps just a few breaks but

not much. we'll wind down a little bit into the overnight hours and by tomorrow morning we're up and roaring again. with most of the rain again falling over the north bay and you will notice over saturday as well as sunday, those possibilities of yellow -- pockets of yellow. but the entire bay area getting wet all the way down into the santa cruz mountains as well as san jose. sunday morning, we are not finished just yet. we have another round coming our way. so today, most of saturday and most of sunday going to be wet. with little break in-between. finally as we get back to work on monday morning, it looks like we'll be drying out. temperature-wise not too bad in the 50s at this hour. for the afternoon, mid- to upper 50s a few low 60s out there. temperatures will remain this way as we get through your weekend. but take a look at bay area weekend. always in view there showing you what today, tomorrow, sunday, we will be finally drying out on monday. and by then tori, we're going to need it. >> i know. yeah exactly. we kind of got whoo we were hoping for. at least for now. >> grin and bear it right?

stocks sharply higher on wall street. investors are finding bright spots in the morning's monthly employment report. including solid growth in construction and manufacturing jobs. the gains on top of yesterday's strong finish could get the market a slight gain for the

week. taking a live look at the big board -- apple is made what's being called the biggest buyback of stock on record. apple's ceo tim cook revealed yesterday that cupertino based company has repurchased $14 billion of its own stock. the buyback took place over the past two weeks. or over the two weeks after apple's stock plunged 8%. that happened after a disappointing first quarter earnings report and revenue outlook. apple shares right now are up 1.5%. it's a beer that draws in people from across the country and as of about an hour ago, younger is now available but only as long as supplies last. we were in santa rosa at russian river brewing this morning when about 300 people were waiting in line for the beer's tenth annual release. the brewery makes only around 1900 gallons of the brew every year because it's so time

consuming. it's considered one of the top rated beers though because of its hops which is what gives beer its flavor. the brewery says younger is triple hopped. >> hopped. hops. and lots of them. i mean -- you know, russian river makes the finest ipas and if you're a hop head if you're an ipa head, at least in my mind, like -- this is the holy grail. this is it. >> planet deyounger is also good for the local economy. all the crowds can generate more than $2 million in economic activity for sonoma county. a tournament director is feeling lucky this noontime. after he was saved by clint eastwood. he was attending a volunteer party on wednesday when he noticed the tournament director steve john cloaking on a piece of -- choking on a piece of food. he quickly performed the heimlich maneuver and eastwood lifted the 200-pound tournament
