bridge toll plaza this morning where as you can see, it is quite wet. you can see the rain drops there on the camera. rain is pouring down across much of the bay area. causing problems on the roadways. we'll have more on what you can expect if you're getting ready to head out the door. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday february 8 i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. and lots of green behind you. >> you said it. wet and breezy for the entire weekend. heaviest over the north base. parts of the east bay and south bay getting a break. let's head to the north bay first, where we have moderate pockets in and around santa rosa. you can see moderate rain falling in between windsor and highway 28. perhaps shifting just a little bit east over the next 10 to 15 minutes. if i get into and along the peninsula, we have steady rain falling here. san jose, light showers, but some areas along the east bay,

again, actually seeing a bit of a break. we'll continue with this rain on and off and on through the entire day. antioch, as well. we continue today and into tomorrow and with all this rain, especially focused over the north bay, the national weather service had issued an urban small stream flood advisory. it will go until 7:45 this morning. i'll scoot in closer and show you the areas. san rafael. you can see sausalito. the possibility of minor flooding here. and a possibility for the entire weekend. we'll be tracking that. i'll track the rain, how to look at your temperatures and the snow in the sierra coming up. we are right now, watching the biggest storm to hit the bay area in more than a year. by the end of tomorrow, some places will get 6 to 9 inches of rain. it's already causing scattered problems this morning. allie rasmus is in one of the

areas receiving rain. the north bay, and alex savage is live in oakland with concerns about flooding and crashes. hi alex. >> reporter: good morning to you, and our location has shifted a little bit. we're in emersville, right here at the maze and just behind me is 80 westbound. you can see cars with the wipers going, of course this morning. heading in the westbound direction toward the maze and many folks headed to the city this morning right now. do you see a lot of water on the roadway, but the rain at this point where we are at this location is fairly light so we have seen it heavy at times as we have been driving around for the past hour or so, and of course this rain is creating hazardous driving conditions and triggering quite a few crashes around the bay area already this morning. if we have some video, i want to show video that we took some time ago after a big rig and box truck crashed into each other. that was 80 westbound, a couple hours ago near the university, between university and gillman. we saw quite a bit of standing

water in a lot of locations this morning. there were some off ramps we saw that were flooded with a lot of standing water. you have to be careful according to the chp. it's so easy to hydroplane if you're to quickly in rainy slick conditions. the chp talked to ktvu. we talked to them about how dangerous it is to drove, and some of the common mistakes people make when they're driving in the rain, such as braking too hard. >> the rear of the car will slide out behind you and cause you to spin. >> reporter: that's the word from the chp. you can't brake too hard, and you need to give yourself plenty of extra time and space between you and the car that's in front of you when the roles are wet like they are right now. a lot of standing water on the freeways and freeway off ramps this morning. the caltrans crews are going to be busy. here in emeryville, keeping an eye on the freeway station.

live this morning in emeriesville, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. thanks alex. the well, the rain has been coming down hard in the north bay. that's where allie rasmus joins us live this morning to continue our team coverage. allie what's the latest there. >> reporter: looks like we're having problems getting allie. we'll try and get her up here in a few minutes. that happens when you have weather and live television. people are stocking up on sandbags. i want to show you one of several sandbag stations set up for the santa clara water district. most counties offer sandbags already filled or the kind you fill yourself. you can also find pickup locations where you live on our web site at ktvu.com. just look under web links. well, city leaders in napa

are taking precautions because of the storm. the main street boat ramp is closed for the weekend, along with the oxboro preserve, and the crossing park. they are closed to the fa pa river and city leaders say they are worried there about the runoff. well, the drive from the bay area to the sierra is going to talk much longer than normal this weekend. chains are required for vehicles from kingvale and placer county to the donor lake interchange in nevada county. you are looking at a live picture on the caltrans camera on interstate 88. it's tough to see the roadway. it's hard to tell if it's snowing right now. but you can tell when it's tough to see the roadway, even in this camera, it's tough on the roadways there. last night, let's talk about that because look at this mess on interstate 880. it looked more like a parking lot. one family going from sacramento to reno was on the road for three plus hours. that is a drive that should only have taken about 45 minutes.

>> we made reservations three weeks ago before the rain and everything. so everybody prayed for the rain and here it is, and we're like, oh, we didn't expect all this. >> chain controls normally cause traffic jams. last night's back up stretched for about 3 miles. that can be painful, but those roads are pretty dangerous. >> dangerous, especially right now. what's happening right now, let's turn it over to rosemary and see how we're looking across the bay area. >> where yes, quite a bit of rain. mount town picked up 7 inches. a considerable amount for our hills. it's a very warm and moist storm and it's going to continue to bring us rain through today, through tomorrow. so giving you a live lock -- look there at san jose. san jose, only picking up 1 to 2/10 of an inch. same with livermore. but then you get into the north bay, and more than an inch even 2 inches in some cases and as i

told you, mount t a, m picking up 7 inches. that's why it's easy to understand they have an urban and small street flood advisory. the next half hour or 45 minutes, we have covered in green, areas like mill valley, san rafael, stretching out toward the coast down into sausalito. tiburon not involved in the green area. again, this is an area we could see minor flooding over the next half hour. national weather service is picking up on radar returns that were adding up to half inch of rain per hour. the storm continues to push through. we're seeing moderate rain over parts of the north bay. it will be favored for today. showed you this a few moments ago. the communities in between, seeing light to moderate rain at times. meanwhile, parts of the south bay sewing a few light scattered showers. san jose light rain. peninsula a steady light rain for you, into the east bay, even a few breaks here in and

around concord, livermore, perhaps, mostly cloudy, but mostly dry at the moment, i want to get to the sierra, though. take a look at this, the last 24 hours, the snow levels have been rising. take a lock at lake toe. elevation -- lake tahoe. elevation at 3600 feet. the snow levels are rising above 6000 feet for today. by tonight, up to 8000 feet. yesterday they were at 3500 feet. a warmer storm. winter storm warning until 4:00 this afternoon for a treacherous driving conditions. here at home, expect dangerous road travel as well, the possibility of maybe mud slides in the burn areas, and the minor flooding is definitely anticipated for today and tomorrow. take a look at rainfall totals over the last 24 hours. san rafael picking up almost 2 inches. but you get down into mountain view and we're talking 1/of an inch. .s 10 in livermore, and temperature wise, starting in the 50s this morning and be in the 50s all day. upper 50s to near 60 for your

afternoon. a near repeat for tomorrow. monday morning we wake up with the possibility of a few scattered showers for drying out. destroy on monday, dry on tuesday. wednesday a mix of sun and clouds with the slightest possibility of a few scattered showers. i'll have a time line on the rain with the future cast model coming up. new this morning, the chp is investigating the discovery of a body on highway 101 in san jose. several people called police after 11 to report a body lying on southbound highway 101, north of broke law road. the body had been hit by several vehicles and they're still investigating whether the person was ejected from a car or was a pedestrian who was walking there on the highway. several lanes were closed for about two hours. and ktvu cameras were rolling during a police chase that started in oakland and ended in berkeley. around 10 last night, our cameras spotted several police cars getting off toward university avenue. they were chasing after a car suspected of being involved in

a robbery in west oakland. that chase ended a short time later on 6th street. police arrested three men and a women and are still investigating whether they were involved in a robbery. the uc berkeley family is in morning. 21-year-old defensive loinman, ted agu was an accomplished person on and off the field. yesterday morning, he collapsed and died after a supervise training run with teammates near memorial stadium. he would have been a 5th year teammates next year. teammates called him premed ted. >> we talk about a lot of difficult material and that smile makes me and the other professors feel like we're connecting and bringing it home. >> teammates have posted numerous messages on social media, calling him a brother and a valuable member of the cal family. the cal women's basketball team honored him in their game against the university of washington. they wore black bands with his

delays as well. and we want to get you to the north bay where the rain is starting to pick up. we tried to get you to allie rasmus just a few minutes ago. we have her live in marin county. what's happening? >> reporter: >> reporter: well, this storm is not only bringing rain but also wind. we have been watching the storm wind blow the trees here back and forth, also the flag posts in front of the fire station. the flags there have been waving back and forth in the wind since we have been here. when we drove over the richmond bridge, the rain was coming sideways and we could feel the wind hitting the side of the van. keep both hands on the wheel. meanwhile here in the north bay, people are keeping a close eye on the creeks and seems like this one. -- streams like this. keeping an eye on the water levels. the national weather service has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory, in

effect for san rafael. marin county cities and nova toe. the north bay is expected to get 6 to 9 inches of rain. 101 south in marin, there are reports of minor flooding in the offer ramp that typically happens every time we have a big rain event. further north in sonoma county, emergency officials are keeping an eye on the streams and culverts, warning drivers about driving through standing water and the hazards of doing that. and anytime we talk about rain, there's always a concern for landslides and mud slides. caltrans plans to have crews on 12 hour shifts on standby in case hillsides on roads giver way near this weekend's storms and out-to-put it -- and to put it in perspective about 7 inches of rain over the weekend. the small flood advisory is in effect until 7:45 this morning. we'll have an update shortly after that at 8:00. for now, live in san ansalmo o

, allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news news. why health officials say the flu has claimed so many lives this season. rob roth takes a look. >> reporter: as this medical clinic in san francisco, doctors say they have definitely seen more influenza cases this year than last, and the case says it's seeing more deaths. the california department of public health says 202 people have died so far this yore from the flu. the vast majority from the h1n1 virus. that doesn't include 41 cases still under investigation, but it's still almost double the 106 flu death cases reported last year. >> that's a lot compared to, especially compared to last year. >> reporter: an epidemiologist for the san francisco health department believes fewer people died last year because the predominant strain of flu was the h3n2 virus which people have built up immunities to,

unlike the newer h1n1 strain more prevalent this year. >> you have a large pool of people who are completely susceptible, and that's probably one of the reasons we're seeing a lot of cases now. >> reporter: the death toll includes 39 people from the bay area and 4 children under 4 years old. scientists will look into whether the current strain of h1n1 has become more common. >> it looks like it's plateaued off for us a little bit. january was the big up swing for us. >> reporter: doctors say vaccination is the best medicine, but some resist. >> never had a problem, and i don't think i will get one. >> reporter: we're not out of the woods yet. flu season has at least another 7 weeks to go. in san francisco, rob roth ktvu channel 2 news. health officials have confirmed california's first death from whooping cough since the 2010 open 2010 --

simon cowell announced he would not return to the u.s. show. he plans to focus on the british version. the x factor aired here on ktvu channel 2 news. it's a star studded event but the clint east wood stole the spotlight. he was at a volunteer party on wednesday night when tournament director started choking. eastwood swung into action and started performing the heimlich maneuver. >> he recognized it immediately. i was trying to tell him i was choking. i didn't need to. he's a very strong man, i can tell you that. >> eastwood told the newspaper, the pine cone that he gave john three good jolts to get the food out. i looked in his eyes and saw that look of panic people have when they see their life passing before their very eyes. it looked bad. third round of tournament begins in 30 minutes. we'll see how much they get to play today with the weather lingering in monterey. >> tough down there but good for clint eastwood, exciting.

7:24. let's go to rosemary we are watching this storm that's right on top of us. >> you're right. coming down over parts of the north bay, heavier directlies near the -- cells near the coastline. we'll take a look. a slide in along the peninsula. you can see we have moderate rain moving in over areas, right around montara. half-moon bay, sliding in and over the peninsula, in the next 10 to 15 minutes, and over parts of the north bay, moderate to heavy rain reports at times, and santa rosa, and petaluma, and the north bay is favored for the heavier rain for today, and if you are just joining us, parts of marin under a small stream and urban flood advisory until 7:45. showing you here over the course of the day, i'll shop at every 2 hours. not a lot of change going on. light to moderate rain over the north bay. light rain over san jose and into the east bay. as we get into 3:00, could taper off just a little bit.

. it is coming down all across the bay area this morning. and those heavy rains are prompting mornings of flooding and hazardous driving conditions. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. we are on storm watch this morning. there is a flood advisory in effect for parts of the north bay. the rain will hopefully ease our concerns a bit, the storm is raising concerns about minor flooding and traffic collisions. we have live team coverage. rosemary orozco in the weather center with how much rain has fallen and how much more we're going to get. first let's take you to alex savage who is live in emeryville. >> reporter: good morning to you. the rain is picking up and we're seeing gusty conditions. if you're heading on the bay area bridges this morning, be extra careful. here's the scene behind us. this is 80 westbound. the traffic you're looking at here is approaching the maze this morning, and you can see a

lot of standing water on the roadway and folks have the wipers going this morning, and hopefully a lot of people are slowing down. that's what the chp would like everyone to do. already these slick conditions on the roads are causing a lot of crashes around the bay area. let me show you some video we shot you in berkeley this morning, a big rig and a box truck, crashed into each other on these wet roads. that was near the gillman exit there, and that has since been cleared out of all the lanes. another situation we're seeing this morning, a lot of standing water in a lot of spots around the bay area. we shot some video this morning at the central avenue off ramp from 580 in richmond, and a big concern according to chp is this kind of standing water on a lot of off ramps and the roadways as well, and the concern is hydroplaning, you need to take it slow out there. don't brake too hard. if you come in contact with a heavy amount of water, like what we're seeing on the bay area freeways this morning, the advice from the chp, don't brake too hard, don't drive too

fast and don't follow too closely to the car in front of you. another word of advice, anytime it's raining and you have your windshield wipers going, state law actually says you need to have your headlights on as well. doesn't matter if it's daytime or not. the chp asking everybody, take it slow out there. this rain is only going to pick up as we move throughout the day. we'll keep tabs on the traffic situation in the east bay and be back later on the morning news. live in emeryville, alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. a flood advisory has been issued for cities in marin county. it was issued before 9:00 a.m. for a number of spots, sausalito, san anselmo. emergency managers say storm runoff is causing creeks to fill rapidly. by monday, parts of the russian river will be flowing with more water than it has been. we will still be well below flood stage. water managers say the latest storms aren't enough to end the drought, but they are a

good start. for example, stafford lake in novato is a third flow, and normally creeks and tributaries would be filled with water. despite the rain, as you can see there, they're still dry, but engineers say that's because the ground is busy soaking up all the moisture. >> we would need to have a lot of these storms back to back to back, and this one storm is a great start, but we recognize we need a lot more. >> the north marin water district serves about 51,000 customers living in novato and west marin. the drought has taken its toll on bay area trees and one boulder creek family say the wind and rain is making things worse. their home is surrounded by 100 foot trees. when the first storm came in, many of the trees started to sway, and they say it didn't take long for large branches to start falling off. >> you can hear the branches and stuff starting to get they've and creeing and stuff like that.

so, yeah, you know, definitely other than just pitter patter on the roof. >> well, the family called travis tree professionals to help try to prevent further damage. the owner of the company is warning other bay area residents to keep an eye on fir trees located around the homes, especially during the week's rainfall. slippery roads may have caused a propane truck to crash. the tanker r slid off the road, over turned and hit a tree. the propane truck was empty so no hazardous materials spilled out. a driver was not hurt, but the firefighter was injured trying to cut the tree off the truck. officers say he may have suffered a couple broken ribs. your time now 7:34. the rain's coming down. how long is it going to last. rosemary orozco watching all of that for us, and are we seeing the worst of it right now. >> you know, it's coming in waves. we are definitely seeing more of the moderate rain falling this morning. by the afternoon, it will lighten up just a bit. it will taper off some, but

it's not going to go away. this is going to be with us through sunday evening. we may wake up with lingering showers on monday morning. a live look at the oakland estuary, very wet. breezy in many areas. winds gust to go 30 miles per hour. in general, our winds are anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per hour in the bay area. it is coming down in some areas. moderate to light rain. i have the radar stopped here so you can see exactly where some areas in the east bay, actually seeing a few breaks. right along the peninsula, this is where the moderate rain falling. the yellow directlies anywhere from a 1/2 inch or so. we are going to continue to see this along the coast, if i shift inland just a little bit. perhaps near san mateo, crossing over the san mateo bridge, quite messy at this hour, in addition to the wet weather, again, it's going to be breezy. sfo reporting delays for 3 hours, for some arriving flights, just so you could

beware of that. if we head to the north bay, pretty steady and heavy at times, from santa rosa to petaluma and novato. talked about the advisory for parts of marin, i put a circle around those areas from novato, to san rafael, to the coast, this lasting another 10 minutes or so for urban and small stream flooding. we're going to see plenty of advisories pop up over the next 24 to 36 hours. i'm going to take away the rain and show you the plume of moisture we keep talking about. i'm going to step out of the way, take a look to the left hand of your screen, down there at the bottom. those are the hawaiian islands there, and this is how far this train of moisture is coming from. so every once in a while, we are able to tap into this very moist, relatively warm system or i should actually say a pattern and when that happens, we get quite a bit of rain, and it's going to be last for the next couple of days. over the hill, we are expecting

anywhere from 6 to 8 inches. mount tam reporting 7 inches. and in and around san jose could pick up an inch to 2- inches and the central bay anywhere from 2 to 3 inches. and the north bay, 4 inches when all is said and done. the last 24 hours, you can see the north bay definitely getting the brunt of this so far. nearly 2 inches in san rafael reported. the further south, the less we get. 15/100 in san jose. tenth of an inch in mountain valley. and we expect that with the storms, definitely those storms coming from the south. your extended forecast with your bay area weekend always in view. a near repeat for your sunday, it's going to be wet. it's going to be breezy. we will dry out on monday. we're dry on tuesday, and then there's another chance of rain coming our way on wednesday. if you're headed to the sierra or thinking about it, i'll have a look at what's happening out there, included an advisory coming up. and you can get the forecast anytime on the go with our new weather app.

live radar, tweets from the weather team downloaded for your apple or android device. it's free in the app store. oakland police say an elderly woman is dead after an apparent home invasion robbery. officers were called to her home in the fruitvale district to check on her welfare and they spotted signs that someone forced their way inside. they found 77-year-old susan fong and a male relative in his 40s or 50s. >> medical personnel pronounced the female deceased at the scene. there are no visible signs of injury. it's unknown the cause of death for the female. >> the male relative was taken to the hospital, and he does appear to be okay. a $10,000 reward is being offered in the case case. a an industrial accident that killed two men is being investigated by cal osha. that incident happened at 10:00 in the morning at the galaxy granite on portland avenue.

the workers were moving giant slabsover granite out of the shipping container when one fell on them. one died at the scene. the other died at the hospital. ktvu has learned that one of the suspects accused of killing a 3-year-old napa girl was accused of threatening the life of former girlfriend pregnant with his child. in 2008, the ex-girlfriend filed a restraining order in solano county against ryan warner. he told her, ," if i find out you're cheating on me, i'll bust your teeth out with a pipe ." warner and a current girlfriend, sarah kruger r are charged with killing her 3-year- old daughter. the pair have admitted to stuffing the child's body in a suitcase and later into a freezer. tv personality and former prosecutor nancy grace is coming under fire for a twitter hash tag. she used the hash tag freezer tot to describe the toddler. it prompted a backlash from

by a fellow officer, sergeant tom smith asked superiors to assign the department's s.w.a.t team in arisk searches. according to the paper, his requests were rejected. he was shot and killed by mike maze when they searched the suspect's home in dublin last month. smith had asked for s.w.a.t officers during that particular operation is unclosure. all officers are qualified to perform probation searches. san jose police are looking for a man who they say pretended to be a police officer to sexually assault a woman. it happened on monterey road. the man told the woman he was an officer and threatened to arrest her if she did not obey his orders. police say he took the victim to a parking lot where he sexually assaulted her. the man is described as latino. between 30 and 40 years old with a muscular build. police say this is a surveillance photo of the suspect's car. it is a white, mid 1990s, dodge durango. we're learning that no

the possibility of urban flooding and small stream flooding for parts of marin and sonoma. that's definitely where we're seeing the moderate, heavy rain at times. let's look at storm tracker 2, lit up pretty good, if we zoom in closer. areas along the east bay reporting light rain. this is where we're definitely seeing heavier cells. you can see over santa rosa, reporting heavy rain at times, and that's what we have out right now, down through petaluma, the possibility with the rates anywhere from 2 to 3/10-inch per hour for some of these yellow cells that if we slide in over closer to the coast, we have some heavier orange cells, those orange cells indicating that they have the potential of dropping anywhere from 6 to 9/10 of an inch of rain per hour. sliding into san mateo, you have pretty good rain falling over san bruno. across the san mateo bridges it's going to be a messy one. the rain is expected over the course of your saturday. it's really not going to end we

are taking a live look at the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza this morning. you can see the rain drops there on the camera lens. rain pouring down across much of the bay area. flood advisories are in effect. we'll have more on what you can expect as you get ready to head out the door. good morning everyone, welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday february 8th. i'm mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. weather our big story today. it's over us right now. let's go straight to mary mary for a look at what's in store -- rosemary orozco for a look at what's in store today. we have steady rain over the bay area with the exception parts of the south and east bay. you get in the peninsula, and north bay, it's not only falling but really coming down in some areas. we have moderate rain falling in areas, santa rosa, san rafael, a little bit closer, it has let up just a little bit. it has shifted off to the east. this area now under an advisory in addition to parts of marin county. i'll look at that in just a moment. we're seeing pretty good rain along the coastline and

stretching in across the bay. these cells capable of producing anywhere from 3/10 to half inch of rain per hour. they aren't sitting stationary, they're moving through, but moderate rain heading through the east bay in the next 10 to 15 minutes, and the advisory exes to 10:45. it includes parts of marin, and stretches into sonoma. we'll take a details look at what's happening here, how much rain is falling, what we can expect to get by the end of the weekend, coming up. we are watching the biggest storm hit the bay area. by the end of tomorrow, some places are going to get 6 to 9 inches of rain, and while we certainly need the water, it is already causing some scattered problems this morning. we have live team coverage for you, allie rasmus is in one of the areas receiving the most rain so far. that's the north bay. we're going to begin with alex savage live for us at emeryville with the threat to drivers this morning. alex. >> reporter: good morning to

you. the rain is heavy out here in the east bay this morning, and it is leading to treacherous driving conditions all across the bay area. we'll show you the scene here behind us this morning. just a ton of water. this is 80 westbound, the roadway just covered in water, and we're seeing most drivers taking it slow this morning. the widespread wipers are working extra hard here. all of the o water approaching the -- all of the water approaching the maze, and this storm is starting a lot of spin outs and crashes across the bay area. one situation we ran into this morning at about 5:00 5:00 or so, a box truck and a big rig got into an accident. they were off to the side. a tow truck came in and both of those trucks. the accident didn't seem to be too severe. that was near the gillman exit off of 80 and that was in berkeley. the chp is ordering everybody in order to avoid the crashes, take it extra slow and make sure you don't follow the car in front of you, too closely.

they say it every time it rains. it's important advice. can't follow too closely. giver yourself plenty of time to brake, just in case you have to. another issue on the roadways this morning to keep in mind. along with the heavy rain is the winds. they are also a factor this morning. gusty conditions creating hazardous conditions, especially on those bridges. we talked to one driver this morning as she got off the freeway here in emeryville, she says a lot of other people are taking it slow. >> driving pretty good, not too bad. a little fast, we'll see how it goes. >> you're taking it slow. >> yeah. >> another issue is a lot of standing water, on many of the freeways. we shot this video early this morning. this is the central avenue off ramp. from westbound 580 in richmond, and it was quite a bit of standing water right there, just as people were coming a off the freeway, drivers either had to go around the giant pool of water or take it slow as they went through the water, and we experienced firsthand as

we came off the freeway, just how deep that water is. beware, a lot of freeway off ramps are going to be experiencing similar situations and the chp says again, if you take it slow, you can avoid hydro planing with all the standing water on the roadways this morning. we're live this morning in emeryville, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. we heard rosemary talk about the flood advisory underway in parts of marin county. that's where allie rasmus is live for us this morning as we continue our team coverage. allie >> reporter: that's right, that urban and small stream flood advisory for the north bay has been extended until 10:45. that means people in north bay communities are keeping a close eye on the creeks, the streams, the water ways out here. you can see the water here is flowing at a brisk pace. we have seen some debris. a short time ago, there was a tree stump we saw floating by.

here in san anselmo, they are used to dealing with flooding problems in the past. they are used to putting out sandbags in front of the shops and restaurants as a precaution. if you look around the downtown area, there are no sandbags hoar. you can chalk that up to the fact, that people this year aren't as concerned about the possibility of flooding as they have in years past. now, the culverts and storm drains are gushing this morning, though, providing this area with some much needed rain. the north bay is expected to get anywhere from 6 to 9 inches of rain this weekend. we ran into one resident who also happens to work for the marin municipal water district, and she says this rain is a very welcome site. last year, 2013, we had in this marin area, we had 10

inches of rain in the whole year. normally we have 52 inches, which is like up to here on my chin, so this weekend, i hear we might get almost 10 inches of rain, which is what we got in the whole entire year. >> now, of course anytime we talk about a lot of rain, there's always a concern and a possibility for landslides and mud slides. caltrans plans to have crews on 12 hour shifts on standby in case hillsides give away to this weekend's storms and we're checking with chp, heard of a report of a minor rock slide on 101 northeast and there's also reports of flooding near the madera creek near sir francis drake boulevard. we're going to check on those things and will have another live update later in the show. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. city leaders are taking precautions because of the storm. the main street boat ramp is

closed and those areas are close to the napa river and city leaders say they are worried about the runoff. the drive from the bay area to the sierra is taking much longer than normal this weekend. chains are required for vehicles on interstate 80 and here's a live look at why. those chain requirements are from kingvale to placer county. this is interstate 80, and you can barely see the roadway there, so obviously going to need to slow down a bit if you are headed up there. not a lot of traffic looks like it's going through the area. it is snowing there, and you can see visibility still okay. but those conditions can be pretty treacherous. last fight, interstate 80 looked for like a parking lot than an interstate. some people took about 6 hours to drive from the east bay to tahoe, and one family that was trying to get from sacramento to reno was on the road for three plus hours. it's a drive that sometimes takes about 45 minutes. we made reservations three weeks ago before everybody, the

rain, everything, so everybody prayed for the rain and here it is, and we're like, oh, we didn't expect all this. >> chain controls normally cause traffic jams, but last night's back up stretched for about 3 miles, that could be a very very long 3 miles. right now chains are required on highway 50 from twin bridges to myers and we were talking about that from sacramento to reno. that's a little bit longer. if you're hauling, i guess, i mean, it could be 45 minutes but on a nice sunny day. finally though, starting to look like winter. it's nice to see the snow and the rain. let's turn to rosemary. i asked you about the wind. is it going to be windy. >> it is breezy. at times, the rain may be coming at you from the side. we do not have any advisories in place for the wind. in general, we typically get wind, and i'm seeing the gusts at 30 miles per hour in some areas this morning. it's definitely a gloomy, soggy start to the day. giving you a live look over bay point and some areas definitely seeing more rain than other areas. the north bay favored for today, and mount tam has

already recorded 7 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. our coastal hills definitely going to see the most out of this weekend storm, but you can see, it is enough to go around. we've got some light to moderate rain falling over parts of the bay area, shifting in and along the peninsula. we have heavier cells from the coast, crossing over the peninsula a little bit earlier. let's head east and see what's happening here. moderate rain falling over areas like san leandro. on the east side near hayward and into oakland. these yellow cell, the possibility of 1 to 2 tenths per hour. moderate rain. over the north bay, moderate, even heavy at times. if you are joining us, there is an advisory for parts of north bay, parts of marin until 10:45. the possibility of urban and small stream flooding, which means it could cover roadways. take it easy if you're going to be out there. shifting just a little bit closer, some of the areas

include forest mills, san rafael yell, we have novato, shift to the north and show you it stretches into areas luke santa rosa, pet luna -- petaluma. don't try to go through flooded waters. we get into the sierra, the snow levels have been rising the last 12 to 24 hours. yesterday, the snow levels at 5000 feet. they'll be shifting and will be near 7 to 8000 feet. i'd like to point out lake tahoe, right about 6200 feet. we have rain falling over lake tahoe, a sure fire sign that the snow level is moving its way up. an advisory still in place. a winter storm warning above 5000 photo. if you are going to be driving in direction, very busy and blowing snow. gusts are expected at 50 miles per hour, heading toward the west slope and higher along the ridges. the last 24 hours, we have seen quite a bit overran in some areas. not so much in others.

by several vehicles. they're investigating whether that person was ejected from the vehicle or a pedestrian on the highway. several lanes were closed for two hours. ktvu cameras were rolling during a police chase that started in oakland and ended in berkeley. around 10:00 our cameras spotted several police cars getting off interstate 80 toward university avenue. police say they were chasing after a car suspected of being involved in a rob in west oakland. the chase ended just a short time later on 6th street. police arrested three men and a woman. officers are still investigating whether the four individuals were actually involved in that robbery. students in shock at uc berkeley, how the school's honoring a football player who collapsed and died during training. and oakland a's fans getting ready this morning to brave the rain and cold r for fan fest. who is expected to attend the sold out event that gets underway in a few hours. first, some problems on the road this morning, but look at the skies, this is a look at san francisco international. sfo is on a ground delay for

parts of oregon. the city of yes valois, the home of oregon state campus received a foot and a half of snow in the past few days. elsewhere, several hundred thousands people are without power. major outages in states ranging from arkansas to pennsylvania to maryland. utility crews say the storms knocked down power poles. the uc berkeley community this morning is mourning the death of one of its football players. friends, faculty, coaches and teammates say the 21-year-old defensive lineman, ted agu was an accomplished person on and off the field. yesterday morning, he collapsed and died after a supervised training run with teammates nearly memorial stadium. he would have been a # 5th 5th year senior next year, and teammates referred to him as premed ted. >> we talk about a lot of difficult material and the smile makes me and the other professors feel like we're connecting and bringing it home. >> teammates have posted

most areas, getting a break just off the coast there. sliding into the east bay, we have pretty good rain falling in between, it looks like oakland through san leandro, and into hayward with some of the heavier cells now there in areas right around hayward. about, looks like rainfall rates, anywhere from 5 to 6/10 per hour with the orange cells. the yellow cells indicating the possibility of a quarter inch or so with each hour. if we get into the north bay, it has been moderate to heavy all morning long. santa rosa, down to petaluma and we find an advisory for the possibility of minor flooding stream as well as some of those roadways, so just take it easy out there. that lasts until about 10:45. for the weekend, the possibility of that rain on and off the entire weekends. breezy conditions at times. a little breezy out there this morning. inland, we'll see anywhere from 2 to 7 inches of rain. the further south you go, the less you are expected to get. areas over the north bay could pick up 4 to 6 inches and the

the north bay could get 6 to 9 inches of rain this weekend. everyone though the community is used to flooding, the shops and businesses each winter have the sandbags out, everyone is just glad to see the rain after a dry 2013. >> i'm very happy that it's raining. i just hope we don't get flooding. but i think because it's been so dry, the ground will soak it up probably, and it will end up being okay. we're really excited. >> reporter: now, of course anytime we talk about rain, there's always a concern for landslides and mud slides. caltrans has crews on 12 hour shifts on standby in case the hillsides give way during the weekend's storms. doing a quick check with chp, we have a minor rock slide on highway 101 north, east of sir francis are drake and reports of flooding near sir francis

drake. coming up on mornings on 2, we'll check those out for you. in the meantime, the small stream flood advisory is in effect until 10:45 this morning. line in san san anselmo, allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. the steady rain is causing dangerous conditions on bay area highways. officers say the first rain of the season creates slick roadways, which can easily cause a driver to lose control and the chp is warning drivers to slow on down. >> a common mistake during the rainy season, apply the brakes really hard. >> it's scary. it's wet, and there have been a lot of accidents going on. i just try to go careful. >> the highway patrol says there was a spike in accidents yesterday due to the wet weather with almost triple the number of incidents officer normally see. alex savage is out there, we'll check with him in a moment. slippery roads may have caused this propane truck to crash. it over turned and hit a tree.

the propane truck was empty. no hazardous materials spilled. the driver also wasn't hurt but a firefighter was injured while trying to cut the tree off the truck. officers say he may have suffered broken ribs. the drought has taken its toll on bay area trees and one boulder creek family is saying the wind and rain is making things worse. the home is surrounded by 100 foot trees: many trees started to sway, and it did not take long for large branches to start falling off. >> you can hear the branches and stuff starting to like get heavy and creeing and stuff like that. so, yeah, you know, definitely other than just pitter patter on the roof. >> the family called travis tree professionals to help prevent further damage. the owner of the company is warning other bay area residents to keep an eye on fir trees, located around the homes. president obama will be making a stop in the central valley to talk about the drought. this week, the republican controlled house pass add bill

cells, indicating rates at a half inch or so an hour. let's start in the east bay because we're seeing light to moderate rain. it was over the oakland, hayward, san leandro area. it's shifting in closer to pleasanton, livermore, the next few minutes. we have moderate rain, the case all morning long from santa rosa, to petaluma, light to moderate rain cells for the most of the morning. the rain will taper off just a little bit in the afternoon, but it's not going to go away all together. this is going to be the case through the entire weekend with the waves moving through. this is the advisory we're talking about. minor flooding a possibility near the small creeks, could quickly see those flood and move over the roadways. definitely something to consider. areas near mill valley stretch all the way down to sausalito, off the coastline, you can see forest knolls, novato, san rafael, shift towards santa rosa and show you how widespread it is from petaluma

death for the female. >> the male relative was transported to the hospital. he appears to be okay. $10,000 reward is being offered in this case. san jose police are looking for a man who they say pretended to be a police officer to sexually assault a woman. it happened last saturday on monterey road. he told the woman he was an officer and threatened to arrest her if she did not obey his orders. he took the victim to a parking lot where he sexually assaulted her. the man is being described as a latino man between 30 and 40 years old with a muscular build. police say this is a surveillance photo of the suspect's car. it is a white mid 1990 dodge durango. an industrial accident that killed two men at a san francisco granite company is being investigated by osha. the incident happened yesterday about 10:00 in the morning at portland aver. the workers were moving giant slabs of granite out of a shipping container when one

load fell on them. one worker died at the scene, and the other at the hospital. this is the company's first serious accident. there are new questions in the case of a b.a.r.t. police sergeant who was shot and killed by a fellow transit officer. sergeant tom smith asked superiors to assign the s.w.a.t team in high risk searches. smith was shot and killed by michael mayes while they searched a suspect's home in dublin's month. it's unknown if he asked for officers during this particular operation. he insists all officers are qualified to perform probation searches. no criminal files will be charged in the beating of a man outside his home. david lamont was attacked in december after confronting young people making noise. he's recovering from a serious head injury. several persons of interest were identified in this case but yesterday the alameda district attorney announced no criminal charges would be filed

the city of oakland. people in japan dealing with heavy snow, since early this morning, about 4 inches has fallen, this is the first heavy snow to fall, and to hit central tokyo in about 13 years. and more bad weather is expected through the night before it begins to finally clear up tomorrow. that snow is causing traffic problems, grounding flights and delaying trains. well, kenneth bay is the longest serving u.s. detainee in north korea has been touchdown a labor camp. he was arrested in 2012 and sentenced to 15 years hard labor for hostile acts. after losing 50 pounds, he was moved to a hospital, and yesterday his family learned that on january 20th, he was taken back to a prison camp and that's the same day he did hold that news conference pleading for his release. smart phones may soon be required to have a kill switch installed under a new bill proposed in california. for months, bay area officials have been pushing for technology to deter theft by making a stolen phone unusable. at a news conference yesterday

the estimated cost of california's high speed rail line has been slightly lowered. the california high speed rail authority says the project is expected to cost about $67 billion. instead of $68 billion. the rail authority is required to update its business plan every two years, and the new plan is going to be presented to the rail authority board on tuesday. the rail agency will begin construction later this year, despite recent court battles. a regional commission has turned down a request from the city college of san francisco to review the decision that revoked the school asset accreditation. the next step is filing a formal appeal. last july, the schools accreditation was revoked because of its finances and structure. it has 17% fewer students enrolled for the spring semester. today is 104th anniversary of the boy scouts of america.

you a look at 80 westbound. the cars you're looking at there, are headed toward the maze this morning. and you can see the conditions that people are up against. a lot of water pooling on the freeway, all over the bay area. chp officer told me a short time ago that the wet roads have led to quite a few spin outs and crashes on bay area freeways. thankfully no one has been seriously hurt in any of the accidents. just after 5 this morning, though, in berkeley, a big rig and a box truck got into a crash during this morning's downpour. that accident was on 80 near the gillman exit. the chp says when the rain is coming down this harold, you just have to drive a little bit slower and avoid following other cars too closely. give yourself plenty of time to stop, and also a word of advice, if it's raining and you have the windshield wipers on, you must also have your headlights on. that's according to state law. drivers this morning seem to be taking it slow during this

and that's where we fine find ktvu's allie rasmus this morning as we continue our team coverage. allie? >> reporter: , well, earlier this morning we were live near san an sal san anselmo, and -- san anselmo, you can see branches and tree trunks being cared along. there's no flooding to report. as we have heard rosemary tell us all morning, there's an urban and small stream flood advisories for communities in the north bay, and that's in effect until 10:45 this morning. and you can see the rain is coming down hard as we speak. people slowing down as they break and hit the stop signs and stoplights, further down the road here. there's some puddles and splashing. no flooding, though, to tell you about. that could change, though, the north bay could get anywhere from 6 to 9 inches of rain. this morning we ran into a

resident who happens to work for the marin municipal water district. she says the rain is a welcome sight after this dry 2013. >> last year, 2013, we had in this marin area, we had 10 inches of rain in the whole year. and normally we have 52 inches, which is like up to here on my chin, to this weekend, i hear we might get almost 10 inches of rain which is what we got in the whole entire year. >> reporter: the culverts and storm drains are gushes but in the downtown san anselmo area, used to seeing heavy flooding in the past, this year, what's noticeable is that there aren't nee sandbags in front of the shops and businesses, people just aren't as concerned of the possibility of flooding as they have been in years past. but, again, the storm is bringing not just rain but also wind. we have seen plenty of tree branches down on the roadways and again, drivers taking it slow as they get to their

we're into monday morning, and finally going to be drying out. wet and breezy for the entire weekend. that means dangerous road travel a possibility. even a few mud slides out near the fire burned areas and we're talking about small creek and urban flooding, and we'll be talking about it all day long. the extended forecast with your bay area weekend always in view. temperatures in the 50s and will remain in the 50s for most of the day. a few low 60s expected by 3, 4:00 this afternoon, under gray skies. breezy conditions. wet conditions, sunday a near repeat, we finally dry out by monday morning, and then we're dry for a couple days. monday, tuesday, a chance for rain will move back in on wednesday. that's good news that we'll get a break with more rain on the way. i'll have a look at how much rain we're expected by the end of the weekend coming up. uc berkeley community is mourning the shocking death of one of its football players, friends, and faculty, say 21- year-old defensive lineman ted agu was an accomplished person

until the last 24 hours, downtown oakland has picked up a little more than a 1/2 inch of rain. the bay area is not alone in experiencing winter weather. that winter storm warning extended for parts of oregon. the city of corvallis, which is home to the oregon state university campus received a foot and a half of snow in just the past two days. elsewhere, several hundred thousands people are still without power. major outages in states from arkansas, pennsylvania and maryland. utility crews say the storms knocked down power poles poles poles poles and coat cables with ice. four more deaths are being reported in santa clara county from the flu. why health officials say the flu has claimed so many lives this season. >> this is the vaccine that's ideal for most people. >> reporter: at this medical chen in san francisco, doctors say they have seen more influenza cases this year than last, and the state says it's

it's over the north bay, we could use a break and not seeing any at this point. let's look into the east bay over areas along highway 24. light scattered showers falling over walnut creek, lafayette. if we get into the north bay, this is where we have the advisory for minor flooding and the possibility of those small stream and creek flooding. so the advisory goes for another hour, almost hour and a half or so until 10:45. this is where we're seeing the moderate to heavy rain, and it just hasn't let up. if you have a drive along highway 101, take a look at that, it could be a little messy, breezy, winds are through santa rosa. areas near calastoga picking up winds: we sure could use the brakes as well. we're going to be with the rain on and off through saturday, even through sunday and these are storm totals expected by the end of the weekend. 2 to 7, maybe 8 inches. what does that mean.

80 westbound in emeryville, where we are this morning. let me show you the scene earlier this morning. we came across this crash that happened just after 5:00. a big rig and a box truck crashed into each other. that accident was on 80 in berkeley near the gillman accident. tow trucks removed both of the trucks from the lane. when you're getting this kind of rain, you have to slow down, and you cannot foul other cars too closely. that's what leads to accidents. if it's rain, and you have your wipers, on make sure to turn your headlights on. that's what the state law says. drivers do seem to be slowing down, and using extra caution this morning. >> people are being good. often not so much. >> reporter: quite a bit of rain coming down. >> a lot, and we're grateful for it. >> reporter: and we have seen hazardous conditions in terms of flooding on the roadways this morning. we saw standing water, quite a bit of it at the central aver

we'll show you what the water levels look like. the creek is higher than it's been in the last several months. no flooding to tell you about. this is an urban and small stream flood advisory in effect for the north bay until 10:45 this morning. we can see debris. water is moving at a brisk pace and we can see the debris being carried along, and the north bay community affected by the advisory are san rafael, novato, and other cities in the north e but a. now, the ground is already soaked and so with this storm that's also brewers some heavy wind gusts, this is video of firefighters in kentfield responding to a fallen tree on hillsdale, they had to get out their saws to brech it apart and clear the roadway. even though the rain can lead to inconveniences, we've talked to plenty of people saying they are welcoming the wet weather. >> i'm happy it's rain the. i hope we don't get flooding.

though the rain can be a bit messy and bit inconvenience, people say they are happy to see us, because we know we definitely need it. live in ross, allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. slippery roads may have caused a propane truck to crash in concord, it happened about 6:30 off highway 242. the tanker slid off the road, overturned and hit a tree. the propane truck was empty. no hazardous materials spilled out. the driver was not hurt, a firefighter was injured while trying to substitute cut the tree -- to cut the tree off the truck. he may have suffered broken ribs. the wind and rain is causing problems for one family. the family's home is surrounded by 100 foot trees. they say when the first storm came in this week, many of their trees started to sway. they say it did not take long for large branches to start falling off. >> we hear the branches starting to get heavy and creeing and stuff like that. so yeah, you know, definitely other than just like pitter patter on the roof.

>> the family had called the tree company to come in and prevent further damage. the owner of that tree company is now warning other bay area residents to keep an eye on fir trees located around their homes, especially during the weekend's rainfall. starting out with a live look there, mount diablo, you can see the gray skies, soggy conditions and you can see the tree on the left side of the screen, blowing in the wind as alex and allie have been mentioning this morning, it's not only wet but a little breezy. take note, if you need to be outdoors this morning. alex mentioned getting a bit of a break, and that's what we're seeing for portions of the central and south bay. you can see the cut offline, right about here. but with all the moisture in place, i believe we're getting a little bit of drizzle, perhaps a few light rain amounts moving across the area, although the radar not picking up on it at the moment. where are we not seeing a break, over parts or the north bay, and this has been the case

returning on wednesday for rain. oakland police say an elderly woman died after an apparent home invasion robbery. officers were called to her home in the fruitvale district to check on her welfare and spotted signs someone had forced their way inside. officers found 77-year-old susan fong and a male relative in his 40s or 50s. >> medical personnel pronounced the female deceased at the scene. there are no visible signs of injury. it is unknown the cause of death for the female. >> the male relative was taken to the hospital and it does appear he's going to be okay. a $10,000 reward is being offered in the case. an industrial accident that killed two men at a san francisco granite company is now being in facted by cal osha. that -- investigated by cal osha. that happened at 10:00 yesterday morning. investigators say the workers were moving giant slabs of began it out of a shipping container when one of the loads fell on them. one worker died at the scene. the other died at the hospital.

this is the company's first serious accident. ktvu has learned that one of the suspects accused of kill ago 3-year-old napa girl was accused of threatening the life of a former girlfriend pregnant with his child. in 2008, the ex-girlfriend filed a restraining order against ryan warner r. she claimed he told her "if i find out you're cheating on me, i'll bust your teeth out with a pipe ." warner and current girlfriend, sarah krueger are charged killing krueger daughters kayleigh slusher, they have admitted to putting the body in a suitcase and later a freezer. nancy grace is coming under fire about a twitter hash tag about kayleigh slusher, using the hash tag freezer tot. it prompted a backlash from users who called it insensitive. grace has not reacted publicly, but the hash tag has been changed to justice for caylee. there are new questions in the

caused a deadly accident last november killing a santa cruz bicyclist. police say when he fell asleep at the wheel, he and killed a librarian biker. he had just bought the car ten days before and the new car scent caused him to fall asleep. he's charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. the retired police officer accused of killing another man at a movie theater in florida has been denied bail. the video captures the deadly incident. investigators say 71-year-old curtis reeves shot chad olson after arguing with him about his cell phone use. police say reeves claims he shot olson because he was afraid of gating beatingen up. nicole olson, chad's widow was wounded by shot. the death of actor philip seymour hoffman has left film producers scramble to go figure out how to finish the hunger
