it's just one of many of the problems that cleanup crews around the bay area are facing after the weekend's heavy and much-needed rainfall. good morning. i'm tori campbell. >> how did you handle the rain? >> enjoyed it. >> so did i. good morning. i'm dave clark. steve, are we done for now? >> in this pattern, except for drizzle and light rain. everything is heading north. a lot of cloud cover here is taking aim at us. might have issues. we do have a little bit of lingering fog, also some of that drizzle around. that should end by 9:00. still, partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. mount tam over 20 inches. these are three -- some of these are four-day totals. mill valley, 11.75. sausalito, 9.5. ben lomond had 9.5. kentfield almost a foot of rain. cobb mt., 11. kentfield, oakmont, 11.

napa almost 9 inches. that was one location. it was really mild. this was not a cold system. the south bay got more clouds than anyone else. a winter weather advisory up in the sierra. there's a lot more rain up there than snow. cloud cover will still kind of race across, i might get rain in mendocino county, lake county wednesday. fog, sun, morning drizzle will give way to morning temperatures which will be in the mid-60s. here's sal. we have problems related to the wet weather. steve has mentioned, it's kind of mist now and drizzle. but still wet roads. let's take a look at the tree that's down on la honda road at near 35 near alice's restaurant. alex savidge is there and will have a report from the scene. you cannot get through. alternate route would be highway 29 to get over to 280 instead of la honda road. westbound 24, the drive time here is about 8 to 10 minutes. not too bad from walnut creek

over to oakland. and the traffic is just a little bit slow. bay bridge, that's about a 15- minute wait at the toll plaza. and then we do have about a ten- minute drive onto the bridge. still wet. but the visibility is getting better. a little bit of gusty wind on some of the spans. alex savidge joins us live from woodside where a big tree has come crashing down. alex, when do you think the tree will be picked up? >> reporter: we're on highway 84 in the woodside area of san mateo county. you can see this roadway blocked in both directions because of this large tree that came crashing down early this morning. it took down power lines in the process here. this is one of several trees that apparently fell overnight in this vicinity up in the hillsides of san mateo county according to the sheriff's department. in fact, just about 15 minutes ago, let me show you some video, we heard what sounded like another tree fall in this area. you can see the power lines here moving after that

happened. a pg&e worker was out here at the time. he heard the sale ing this. he told -- he heard the same thing and said he was gonna check it out. this is on skyline. about a quarter mile from alice's restaurant. the sheriff's department got the call about this around 3:30. because of several days of drenching rain, the ground up here in the hills is saturated. and that's obviously what is leading to some of these trees toppling. pg&e says a handful of homes have lost power because they've had to cut the power line while they come in here and workin' on the best way to remove the tree. it will be at least another couple of hours before they can clear the tree out of the roadway. skyline boulevard, shut down in both directions. keep that in mind if this is

your route to route. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. firefighters had to rescue two men stranded on a small piece of land. fire crews say a jogger on the san mateo creek trail heard the men calling for hemp around 6:00 p.m. -- help around 6:00 p.m. firefighters had to secure them with life jackets and pull them. neither of the men were hurt. the power is back on this morning after yesterday's storm knocked out the lights to more than 5,000 customers. one of our photographers caught this video yesterday morning of a transformer shorting out in the rain. it happened in san francisco at fulton near golden gate park. this morning pg&e is reporting two minor outages in the bay area. 117 customers in oakland were without power and 219 in berkeley. you can get weather updates even away from your tv,

download the ktvu weather app and follow us on facebook and twitter. we are we'll post the latest weather information to ktvu.com. the rain exposed another possibly big problem with the new eastern span of the bay bridge. the new $6.4 billion bridge is leaking. caltrans says rain water is dripping into the steel structure on the suspension part of the inbridge which is supposed to be water tight. they are trying to pinpoint where the leaks are and that's raising concerns about corrosion. >> the concern is that water is getting into the rail and that is kind of then dripping down some of the bolts that connect the barrier rail to the deck. >> the engineers say they can solve the problem. this morning at 10:00, caltrans will hold a news conference. they will explain how they will fix the problem. new this morning, san jose police took a man into custody just about 5:30 this morning

after surrounding a house where he was holed up for hours. it started last night at 6:00 after an anonymous caller told police that a wanted man was in the home. police were able to make contact with the man and said he -- he said he was stuck. officers entered the house and found the man stuck in the crawlspace underneath the house. they took him into custody. it's not clear what the man was wanted for. 7:0 p. this morning police in hayward trying to he piece together what led up to a home- invasion robbery that left an intruder dead. brian flores is live to tell us what we know so far. >> reporter: a lot of still unanswered questions when this comes to this incident that happened yesterday afternoon. police say one person, maybe two tried to rob a home on the 21000 block of western. police say that homeowner was able to defend himself and shot and killed one of the

intruders. as we go to the video, this was from yesterday shortly after 5:30. this was raining at that time as well. police say of a they received a call of this attempted home invasion robbery, when they arrived, that's when they found one man dead inside. that man was one of the suspects. he had been shot to death. the victim told police ear robbers fled the -- other robbers fled the scene. police got another call of someone dropping off a woman at the hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. it's believed she's part of the robbery. its u.n. clear this morning of her condition. it's also unclear how the victim is doing this morning, whether the robbers were able to get anything and whether the suspects knew the victim. one person is dead. we have several cars intoly ward police department. we've not heard from them. but hopefully becan get in touch with a -- we can get in touch with a sergeant involved

in this case. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:08. a stockton man has died from his injuries after being shot by police and attacked by a police dog. it all started on saturday night when officers responded to a domestic dispute. police say they found 45-year- old donald hanes assaulting a woman inside a home on carpenter road. hanes was able to break free from police and run away. the next day, police say he attacked officers with a bannette during a routine traffic stop. >> we're trained to make split- second decisions. when you are confronted with a large knife, you only have the second to make up your mind what you are gonna do and the officer shot the suspect. >> they released the dog on him. when that didn't work, they fired. this is a picture of the weapon

police say he used to attack the officers, it's 19 inches with a 15 and a half-inch blade. a san diego police officer is being investigated on suspicion of false imprinsment and sexual battery. he surrendered yesterday. six women accuse him of inappropriately touching them during patdown searches. he's married. his father-in-law is the assistant police chief of san diego. last week's death of a 78- year-old pedestrian now has one traffic safety group calling -- calling for a drastic change on san francisco's sunset boulevard. police have identified the street in the sunset district as one of the most dangerous in the city. critics say there are very few stop signs and traffic lights on the busy six-lane roadway. now one safety group is proposing eliminating the third

welcome back. the man who said he spent 13 months stranded on the open ocean, he's headed back home. during the night, he flew from the marshall islands to hawaii. now, you will remember last week, he washed ashore on the marshall islands. at first, a lot of people doubted his story that he survived on birds and sea turtles and somehow stayed alive. rescuers say they have no reason to doubt him. he's expected to be home in el salvador sometime tomorrow. 7:14. president obama welcomes the president of france to the white house on a two-day state visit today. president obama and the french president are traveling to charlottesville, virginia to tour the former residence of thomas jefferson. jefferson was one of the united states's earliest envoys to

france. there will be a state dinner at the white house for the french president who is traveling solo who recently separated from his recent girlfriend. after that, he heads for the silicon valley where he's going to visit high-tech firms. ghana issuing a warning about an unconfirmed flights for flights on caribbean islands taking off from that country heading here to the south. americans are being advised not to fly on caribbean airlines and make other plans until wednesday. information about security threats targeting the winter olympics in russia. adam schiff on the house intelligence committee says he believes the olympic venues in sochi are safe but he wishes the russians would share more information. a reported 40,000 russian security forces are patrolling the winter olympic games.

to host the big games eight years from now. the city beijing hosted the 2008 summer olympics but it does face challenges in getting these games because of a lack of winter sports facilities. if selected, it would be the first city to host both the summer and winter games. 7:16. oklahoma state basketball star marcus smart will not be playing for the next couple of weeks. the big 12 suspended him for three games because of what's gonna happen in just a minute here. he shoved a fan saturday closing seconds of the game. a fan was heckling him. it was a really heated game. smart later apologized to the fan, to his family and to hayes family for his actions. he says his emotions got the best of him. it is 7:17. hopefully everyone is staying calm on the roads. it's mostly dry. let's check in with sal.

two members of congress will send a letter to the nfl commissioner urging the redskins to change their names. the letter warns they may consider ending the tax exempt status if the league does not push for a name change. the reap sent attacks on retailers could be the beginning of a cybercrime wave.

the fbi says more than 20 companies have been hacked in cases similar to the target breach. the names of all of the compromised companies have not been revealed and it's not clear yet how many shoppers have had credit card numbers and other personal information stolen. hackers have penetrated the databases of three large medical devicemakers. according to the "chronicle" the attack truck medtronic, operations in santa rosa, st. jude medical with manufacturing plants in sunnyvale and boston scientific with offices in fremont, san jose and santa clara. it's not clear what the hackers were after or what they took. 7:25. now we're talking about this -- it looks like a starbucks right down to the logo and the menu but the real starbucks says it has nothing to do with the coffeehouse in southern california. if you look close, you can see it's called "dumb starbucks." people are standing in line for

an hour or more to get a free cup of its coffee. no one is saying who is behind dumb starbucks. the ba reese taus say they -- ba reese saws -- barristas say it's about the coffee. some of the people who have tasted the coffee say it's really not good. a flier says despite the taste, dumb starbucks is legitimate. but they say is a parrydy coffeehouse so this doesn't violate trademark laws. a report released by the government analysis of national health survey claims most caffeine is from soda, coffee and tea. researchers say the rate of consumption did not budge much over the ten-year study. it's the first study to examine recent national trends in caffeine use among children and

when you get there, you will see some usual slow traffic. nothing bad. as you look at the maps, you can see a lot of slow traffic from the altamont pass. it continues all the way out to the main part of dublin. we get to contra costa county, 680 looks okay. just heard of a new crash in oakland. this is westbound 24. motorcycle crash at telegraph. it's supposedly off to the right-hand side. but oakland fire is on the way. someone apparently is injured in that crash. let's go to 7:-- 7:33. back to the desk. the four-day storm that hit the bay area is over, at least for now. tara moriarty is in marin county. they got most of the rain and tara there is a lot to clean up out there. >> reporter: corte-madera is still rushing. that's where all of the water went. it hit the bottom of the bridge there.

got that hit. a woman who works nearby shot some video off her cell phone which shows the creek lapping up against the bridge. mill valley saw about 12 inches of rain over the past four days. 20 inches fell on top of mount tam. there's still some street flooding. yesterday, a 60-food landslide collapsed into the back of a home and crashed into a newly- built studio. >> it was very, very scary. it was almost like it was going to flood. we have our soil bags out in front of the stores. and we almost had to close yesterday. >> reporter: in downtown mill valley, owners at the 2 a.m. club brought out sandbags. it happens every year. storm drains were pushed past their limits. the storm may have contributed to a deadly car crash. the driver was killed when his jeep plungeged 50 -- plunged 50 feet down the ravine. the chp wants to remind you to drive slowly. now, again, this is the creek

back out here live. you can see it's gone down a lot. if we pan to the left, these are the stores that are threatened by the high waters and they have their soil bag from the garden centers that are out to make sure they didn't get flooded. it looks like they are in the clear. they are happy to get the rain. they wish there was a little bit left next time. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:35. this morning, bay area crews are busy cleaning up after the big storm. a lot of crews worked all night removing mud, rock and other debris from the roads. our ktvu craw saw one oakland crew working in a downpour at a winding stretch of fish ranch road near grisly peak. those workers are watching the soaked hillslides which often slaps after a lot of heavy rain. sfo is still reporting canceled flights after the big storm over the weekend. this comes after a ground delay program was put into effect at sfo yesterday. that reduced the landing

pattern to just one plane at a time. it also canceled or delayed hundreds of flights. this morning, oakland, san jose airports, they are not reporting any problems. 7:35. the russian river is really flowing after the weekend storm. the river, in fact, is expected to crest later today as water makes its way to the river from the hills. yesterday, it was gushing at 9,000 cubic feet per second. the sonoma county water agency says the water will be enough to sustain farmers and ratch -- ranchers for the next few months. >> we mope this is the beginning of a phenomenal february. unfortunately, the drought is still on. >> the sonoma county water agency says about six more inches of water is needed just to reach the reservoir levels scene during the 1977 drought. that means water conservation

efforts are shil necessary despite the recent storm. less than two weeks ago, this is what the run river looked like. you can see quite a difference. in fact, the water level was so low, at some point you could walk across it without getting your shoes wet. at that time the river was at the lowest level in january for more than 50 years. you can get weather information any time on your smartphone or tablet and follow steve and our other meteorologists on twitter and facebook. new reports reveal that commercial airlinessers are landing -- ailers are land -- airliners are landing at the wrong airport a lot more than we think. janine de la vega is live at san jose airport to tell us -- well, has it happened there? >> reporter: according to the associated press, an air traffic control person reported that it happened several times during the winter every time there's bad weather on runway

12. now, the airport controller describes the incident in late 2012 of an airliner that was supposed to land in san jose but instead headed to moffett field. the associated press says that's happened six times at san jose. it used nasa's aviation safety reporting system and reports sent to federal agencies and found that 35 landings or aborted landing attempts at wrong airports by commercial and car go planes over the last two decades across the nation. the most recent incident was a southwest airlines plane that landed in hollister, missouri when the pilots were supposed to touch down at branson. the associated press said in most cases, the pilots were cleared by controllers to guide the planes, based on what they could see. and most of these dents happen

-- incidents happen at night. we're in the process of reaching out to the faa to see if they have any comment on this. back to you. almost 9 million pounds of meat recalled by a company based in petaluma. this is a second recall by rancho feeding corporation in less than a month. the agricultural department's food safety says the meat may have been processed from diseased animals. the meat is recalled for meat produced between january 2013 and january 2014. new legislation could affect the future of city college of san francisco. mayor ed lee and mark leno will make the announcement at san francisco city hall. last year a commission threatened to revoke city college accreditation. and then on friday, the school's request to reverse the decision it was denied.

city college officials say their next step is to file a formal appeal. 7:39. happening today, the federal government will extend several marriages to same-sex couples even if they live in states that do not recognize gay marriage. eric holder announced the policy change saturday night at a human rights campaign in new york. under the new ruling, same-sex couples have the right to refuse to testify against a spouse, to file for bankruptcy together and to visit a spouse in prison. >> it appears to be another example of the obama administration imposing its will on the states. >> the attorney general is saying we're gonna apply the same rules as we do for other married couples for the same- sex couples when it comes to our courts. >> currently 33 states do not recognize same-sex marriage. under the new policy, same-sex couples who live in those states but who get legally married elsewhere would be treated the same as

heterosexual couples in all federal, legal matters. well, a month before the nfl draft, a college football star just announced he's gay. >> i came to tell that i'm an openly proud gay man. >> that's michael sam, an all- american for the university of missouri tigers. he came out to his teammates last season. now, while he says coming out publicly was not an eyetion decision, he says -- easy decision, he said revealing this to his teammates helped encourage him. >> they rallied around me and supported me. >> last year, he was voted the most valuable player and defensive player of the year in the southeastern conference. if he's drafted, he would become the first openly guy player in the nfl -- gay player in the nfl. the nfl released this statement "we admire michael sam's honesty and courage.

the stock market is kind of mixed right now. three weeks of dechains. investors hoping the rally continues today. investors are really focused on janet yellen's first comments before congress. that comes tomorrow and it will be her first time appearing as the new federal reserve chair. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is down 35. the nasdaq is up 4. s&p is down 2. time is 7:45, the big storm over the weekend, it's now causing big problems on the bay bridge. pam cook is in the newsroom with the latest construction issue for the new span. good morning, pam. >> good morning. the rain a welcomed site for most of us.

not for caltrans. the weather has exposed another problem with the new eastern span of the bay bridge. caltrans says the bridge is leaking . engineers are working to pinpoint the exact source of the leaks but they are raising concerns of corrosion. >> the concern is that water is getting into the rail and is kind of then dripping down some of the bolts that connect the barrier rail to the road deck. >> now, the project engineer said they knew rain was getting in the brink within months of the september opening but it took a big storm for inspectors to get a good look at the problem. more details now on the new span's other problems we've been talking about. the bad bolts were discovered and repaired. a few weeks ago, several engineers testified to state lawmakers that they also had issues with concrete, steel

decks and even the tower. they say that they were pressured to finish the bridge on time. now, caltrans insists the bridge is safe for driving. caltrans also is going to outline its repair plans during a news conference at 10:00 this morning. we'll have more on what engineers have to say on our ktvu channel 2 news at noon. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, pam. 7:47. the governor of georgia declared a state of emergency for 14 counties, another winter storm is on the way there. this round of snow and ice comes two weeks after another winter storm paralyzed the atlanta area. state and local officials say they've since created an emergency weather task force. the national guard is warning and the department of transportation will be putting up signs along the interstates. >> we're getting ready. trucks can coming here. workers are coming here right now. we're ready for tomorrow. >> now, the governor of georgia

asks residents avoid going out on the roads and telecommute if possible. officials say they want traffic to be light so trucks can get out there on the roads and put salt out and sand necessary to pretreat those roads. 7:47. closer to home, our weekend storm brought a lot of rain and snow to the sierra. now people in truckee are gathering sandbags and preparing for the chance of a flood. some business owners say there's nothing to worry about because it was only one big storm. one woman said she lived in truckee for 15 years and has never experienced a flood. of course all of the snow is exactly what ski resorts have been waiting for. many resorts have received several feet of new storm. other resorts also saw an increase in the number of people visiting their slopes. squaw valley had to shut down yesterday because the dangerous

it's pouring. concord, hardly anything. other areas, sonoma, marin, napa it was coming down to beat the band. for other areas we need the rain. february has been pretty good so far. it's been really good for some. kentfield almost a foot of rain. we talked about that on the weekend. the forecast models on the pro projection right on -- projection right on the money. santa rosa, 6.50. they came in 6.56. more rain fell in february than -- in the last 13 months. it's one of those kind of patterns where you are seeing more rain in the weekend over a year. san jose, not that much. mount tam almost 21 inches.

10 on the bridge. interstate 880 is beginning to fet filled in. cloudy weather here in oakland. 880 is slower than 580. the south bay commute continues to get slow. a lot of red on the map. 101 is the slowest way back from the capitol expressway all the way up into sunnyvale. drive times, highway 4 has cleared out. lone tree to lodge loveridge four minutes. 242 to highway 24 that's the slowest. there are problems to the san jose hills that could be tied to the weekend storm. alex savidge joins us live from the wood side area where a big tree came crashing down on skyline boulevard. when will they have the road back hope? >> reporter: well, the latest estimate is that crews won't -- won't have it opened back up until 10:00 this morning at the

earliest. you can see a large tree blocking both lanes. it came down early this morning right on top of some power lines. this is -- this is one of several trees that came down because of all of the rain. just before 7:00 this morning while we were getting video, we heard what sounded like another tree or a branch fall in the area. you can see some power lines moving. a pg&e worker told us he was gonna check out the situation and see what happened. this tree blocking highway 84 is near sky line boulevard. about a quarter mile or so frommal list's restaurant. the sheriff's department -- from alice's restaurant. the sheriff's department got the call around 3:30 a.m. pg&e told me that just a handful of homes are without power because they had to cut power to the line to remove the

tree. you can see the tree-removal crew has just arrived. they will begin to get the tree out of the lanes. it will be a lock, slow pro set. it will likely take a couple of more hours. the latest estimate it will be 10:00 at the earliest before highway 84 is reopened in this area. we're live in san mateo county, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 8:05. two men were rescued after being stranded in santa rosa creek. it took a small boat out into the dangerous waters but then they couldn't get out. a jogger jogger heard them screaming for. they used life jackets. neither man was hurt. we have an update on the power outages people are experiencing this morning. this comes after yesterday's storm knocked out the lights to more than 5,000 customers. one of our photographers caught

involved in this home-invasion robbery yesterday afternoon off the 21,000 block of western boulevard. talking with rayward police say they say there is a third suspect involved. but the homeowner was able to defend himself, shooting and killing at least one of those suspects. another one in the hospital. as we mentioned, a third suspect remains on the loose this morning. as we go to video from yesterday afternoon. again this happened around 5:30 yesterday. it was raining during that time. but police say they received a call of this attempted home- invasion robbery and when they arrived, they found at least one man dead inside. that man according to police was one of the suspects and he had been shot to death by the victim who we understand this morning had a registered handgun. the victim apparently told police that other robbers had fled the scene. now, about 20 minutes after that, police got another call of somebody drops off a woman at a -- dropping off a woman at a nearby hospital also suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. it's believed that the woman was part of the robbery. the new information this morning that we're learning is

that she's in stable condition at a nearby hospital and when she she's awake she will be questioned by police. >> home-invasion robberies in hayward are rare. in this particular case, neighbors in the area keep their eyes out. if they see suspicious behavior, we would like to receive a call. >> police are looking for a third suspect believed to be a woman. they did not provide any clear information but police say they are close to liking down an identity within the -- locking down an identity within the next few days. they also say the victim and suspect knew each other. they say this home was hit up in a similar robbery last year. the victim we understand is doing okay. no items were taken from the home as well. we're live in hayward, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, police in san jose finally have a wanted man in custody after spending

more than 11 hours trying to get him to surrender. last night at about 6:00 an anonymous caller told police a wanted man was staying in a house on verneese avenue. when police got there, the man refused to come out. later, he said he was stuck. well, finally, at about 5:30 this morning, and you were watching it here on ktvu, police got into the house and took the man into custody. >> they did find him in the crawlspace. whether he was actually stuck or not, we don't know. but they convinced him to come out. as of five minutes ago, he was taken into custody. police have not told us yet what the man was wanted for. they would only say he was known to carry weapons and has a violent past. a stockton man has died from his injuries after being shot by police and attacked by a police dog. it all started on saturday night when officers responded to a domestic dispute. police say they found 45-year- old donald haynes a woman inside the home on carpenter

road. haynes was able to break free and run away. the next day, police spotted his car. that's when he threatened officers with a bayonet. >> we're trained to make split second decisions. when you are confronted with a large knife, you only have that split second to make up your mind what you are gonna do. so our officer had to fire his weapon. >> after police shot haynes, they released a police dog on him. when that didn't work, police say they had to hit haynes with their baton and he died at the hospital. this is a picture of the weapon used to attack the officers. it's 19 inches with a 15 1/2- inch blade. last week's death in san francisco of a 78-year-old pedestrian now has one traffic safety group calling for a drastic change on sunset boulevard. police have already identified sunset boulevard as one of the most dangerous in the city.

president obama is heading back to california. he will be in fresno this friday. he plans to talk about the doubt and what the federal government might do to help. republicans in congress are backing a plan to override state laws that allow water to be diverted to the delta to save endangered fish. house speaker john boehner was in bakersfield last month to see the impact of california's drought. and president obama welcomes the president of france to the white house today. this afternoon, president obama and france's president will tour the former residence of thomas jefferson. jefferson was one of the earliest envoys to france. tomorrow there will be an official state dinner at the white house for the french president. he's solo after recently splitting from his long-time girlfriend who had been considered france's first lady. after washington, the president heads for the silicon valley to visit several high-tech firms.

the u.s. embassy in guyana, americans are being advised not to fly on caribbean airlines until at least wednesday. russian authorities are holding back information about security threats targeting the winter olympics in russia. adam schiff, who is on the house intelligence committee says he believes the olympic venues in sochi are safe but he wishes the russians would share more information. a reported 40,000 russian security forces are patrolling the games. 8:16. jamie anderson from south lake tahoe is celebrating a winter olympic victory in the women's slope style snowboarding. just to warn you, we'll be announcing the running medal count later in the story.

we are still recovering from the first big storm of the year. it soaked the bay area and left behind flooding and landslides in some areas. tara moriarty is in marin county. officials there are closely watching the rivers and creeks. >> reporter: about a half-hour ago, we noticed a fire official come through the parking lot we are. we know that this -- parking lot. we know that last night, they were trying to keep the banks from overflows. they are down significantly. you can see the brown brush. that's how high the water got. if we pan to the right, you can see where the white is. donna shot video off her cell phone which shows the creek. mill valley saw 12 inches of rain over the last few days. 20 inches over mount tam. there's still street flooding and yesterday a 60-foot landslide collapsed into the backyard of a home and crashed

into a newly-built studio. she used soil bags from the garden center where she works to . in downtown mill valley, owners of the 2 a.m. club brought out sandbags. the storm may have contributed to a deadly car crash yesterday morning. a driver was killed when his jeep plunged 50 feet down a ravine. the chp wants to remind you to take it easy on the roadways. even though the rain had stopped. there's puddles out there and the roads are quite slick. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:33. the russian river is filling up after the weekend storm. that's a very important gauge of the north bay's water

supply. look at it move. the russian river is expected to crest later today as water heads down the hills. yesterday, it was moving along, gushing at 9,000 cubic feet per second. the sonoma county water agency says water in the river will be enough to sustain farmers for the next few months. >> this is what we hope is the beginning of a phenomenal february. unfortunately, the drought is still on. >> they say about 6 more inches of water is needed to reach the reservoir levels seen during the 1977 drought. that means conservation efforts

the associated press, it has. reportedly, they are saying that pilots have confused moffett field for mineta san jose and nearly landed there. the associated press says that they did research going as far back as the 1990s and found that there's been six reports of pilots preparing to land at moffett field when they went to touch down in san jose. in a report from 2012 an airport traffic controller witnessed that happening and says these landing mistakes happen several times every winter in bad weather. they used nasa's aviation safety reporting system, and news accounts sent to federal agencies and found there's been 35 landings in 135 approaches or aborted attempts at wrong airports over two decades. we spoke to to -- we spoke to a traveler out of san jose who is also a private pilot. >> you have many runways in the same bay area in the close

proximity within eight to ten miles. if it's at nighttime and you are coming in for a landing and up look down and you see another one, you are gonna look at it and think that's the runway of choice. but it could be off a little bit. >> reporter: the most recent incident happened in missouri when the pilot was supposed to touch down at branson. i've contacted the federal aviation admin says but they still have not -- administration but they still haven't gotten back to me. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:37. a petaluma-based company is recalling about 8.7 million pounds of meat. it's the second recall for rancho feeding corporation in

less than a month. the u.s. department of agriculture food an safety and inspection service says the meat may have been processed from diseased and unsound animals. the recall applies to meat produced between january 2013 and january 2014. so far, there have be been no report -- have been no reported cases of people getting sick from eating the meat. some ran ralph fell police officers testing body cameras. it's part of a pilot program. the camera, about the size of a pager records video and audio. a police department spokesperson says wearing these cameras not only records an encounter but it may keep some suspects from becoming hostile if they understand that they are being recorded. if the police department likes the camera, it will spend 60,000 to get them. 8:38. hundreds of people from the world of politics and entertainment will gather on treasure island tomorrow for the ceremony officially renaming the western portion of

the bay bridge after willie brown. brown is the former mayor of san francisco and the former speakers of the california assembly. those attending tomorrow's ceremony include lieutenant- governor gavinsome, ka ma law harris -- kamala harris, ed lee and jean quan. quincey jones will also attend. are -- 8:39. state legislation will be announced that could affect the future of city college of san francisco. mayor lee and leno will make the announcement. last year a commission theyened to -- threatened to revoke the accreditation. city college officials say their next step is to file a formal appeal. the federal government will extend several marriage rights to same-sex couples even if those couples live in states that do not recognize guy marriage -- gay marriage.

him to surrender. police went to a house on vernees avenue about 6:00 last night after getting a tip that a wanted man was inside. finally, around 5:30 this morning, police went into that house, they found the man in a crawlspace beneath the house. and there are big problems, big traffic problems this morning, in the san mateo county hills that could be tied to the weekend storm we had. look at that. tree bending down those power lines there. ktvu's alex savidge is there in the woodside area. you've been out there for hours. the tree crashed down on skyline boulevard. when will the road reopen? >> reporter: they don't expect to have it reopened until about 10:00 this morning. it could be later at this point because crews haven't even begun the process of cutting apart this large tree that, as you can see, is blocking both of the lanes here and it is resting on tom tom -- son top of the power lines -- on top of

the power lines. just before 6:00 while question were out here shooting video of the story, we heard a cracking sound. it sounded like another tree or branch. you could see the power lines moving. the pg&e worker went to check out the situation. this is near skyline boulevard. it's about a quarter mile or so from alice's restaurant. the sheriff's department got the call around 3:30 this morning. all of those days of pouring rain had left the soul in this area soggy increasing the likelihood of trees toppling. pg&e says a handful of homes are without power in this area. but it could be a couple of hours before crews clear this tree out of the way and get highway 84 back open. we're live this morning in san mateo county, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:46. an important meeting today to discuss new problems on the new span of the bay bridge. pam cook is in the newsroom to

explain. good morning, pam. >> reporter: good morning. it took a big rain storm to get a good look at the latest problem for the bay bridge. that's what caltrans is saying about leaks. now, caltrans plans a new conference at 10:00 this morning to give more deal tails about how rain water is dripping into the steel structure on the suspension stretch of the eastern span. engineers say you do your best and it's supposed to be water tight but water finds its way in. the concern, water is getting into the rail and is kind of dripping down some of the bolts that connect the bay area rail to the deck. >> the project engineer said they knew rain was getting into the bridge within months of the september opening. it took a big storm for inspectors to get a really good look at the problem. independent engineers say this could cause the bridge to corrode and significantly shoateen its life span. with more details on the problems, the bad bolts were

discovered and repaired but a few weeks ago, several engineers testified to state lawmakers that they also had issues with concrete, steel decks and even the tower. they were say they were pressured to finish on time. caltrans insists the bridge is safe. caltrans holds a news conference at 10:00 this morning. it is already said this is not unexpected and that engineers are confident that they will be able to fix the problem. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. all right. 8:48. let's check in with -- this leads us right to sal. you are watching the toll plaza and everything else. >> we're watching the toll plaza. b.a.r.t. just tweeted they have a ten to 15-minute delay into and out of san francisco. that's according to s fb.a.r.t. 10 to 15-minute delay due to equipment problem on the track. they are working to resolve the problem. i will get on the phone and verify it with a human being.

a group protesting the deadly shooting of andy lopez is santa rosa is appealing now to california's top law enforcement officers. a sonoma county sheriff's deputy shot and killed the 13- year-old in santa rosa back in october. now protesters are urging state attorney general kamala harris to get involved and intervene. they say the controversial shooting has become far too politicized in sonoma county and say the state attorney general needs to step in, make sure the incident is handled fairly. so far, no response from harris. a campaign against child sex abuse has been launched by ten chimed abuse prevention centerrers. organizers say the goal is to

empower communities to speak south against it. the san francisco child abuse prevention center reports one in four girls and one in six boys suffer from sexual abuse before they turn 18. last year, there were more than 600 reports of sexual abuse in san francisco. the experts estimate about 87% of those incidents are not reported. 8:54. california's health exchange has announced it is setting aside nearly $200 million to fight off any projected budget shortfalls. the agency has enrolled 625,000 people through midjanuary which is the most of any state. federal grants had been the sole property. a state audit said the eangs is at high risk because of the difficulty in projecting future enrollment. more an more children are entering the school system without first getting vaccinated. in the past ten years, that number of children has more than doubled. parents are able to get away with this because filling out what's called a pbe or personal
