her this afternoon. good afternoon, everybody. i'm brian flores in for tori campbell. breaking news from stanford university where part of the campus has been evacuated due to a suspicious backpack. robert handa is on the scene. joins us live now with an update. robert? >> reporter: hello, brian. we're at stanford university on the outskirts of the union area, generally known as the student union area here on campus. you can see down the street here that police have cordoned off the area and the santa clara county sheriff's bomb squad is on the scene. now, around 9:00 this morning, university officials say there was a report of a suspicious package as you heard, a backpack, found outside of the union area near the auditorium. now, campus police evacuated the area after an abundance of

caution. a bomb squad arrived here a little over an hour and a half ago. we've been told they are approaching very cautiously. we do not know whether they've gotten to the package. i know that they were surrounding it and using all sorts of ways to monitor it before they actually physically examined it. university officials emphasized that safety is their top priority and are asking people to stay away and nearby buildings have been put in a shelter in place mode. university officials also point out that the union area is the only area impacted by this and that the rest of the campus is operating normally. we will give you an update if we get one here and we will have complete updates on ktvu.com. reporting live at stanford university, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you for that update. after more than seven decades of being known as the bay bridge, the san francisco side of it is getting a name change. a ceremony is underway as the bridge is being rae named in honor of willie brown.

sal castanedo is live there at the ceremony. >> reporter: i'm gonna try to keep my voice down because the mayor is still speaking. he's on the podium right now addressing the 500 or so people who are here. we spoke to the mayor and he said he's glad he got to see this in his lifetime. >> as a matter of fact, i want to be the example of how you should say thank you to people who have done things, to say thank you after they are dead, is a little bizarre. if you say thank you before they expire, it's like being in the hall of fame. why would you be happy to be in the hall of fame after death? >> reporter: the bridge signs will not be paid for by the tax payers. but the cost about $6500 is being funded by the naacp. many in the african-american community say this is a proud moment. brune says this a milestone not only for him but for all in the

african-american community to see something of such significance named after him. many echoed that. >> the word means a lot. it means we get to cross over. i think this is why it has caught fire in the african- american community and we're all having our own personal visions of what this means in our lives. it's a sense of ownership of belonging and not to say that this was done without some -- [inaudible [ [for me to be able to say to my grandchildren, remember, i told you about willie brown. >> reporter: and there's kamala harris, quincey jones, we have the chief of police, the chief of the fire department, larry bair, from the giants. a lot of dignitaries here. the mayor has a knack for

speaking. he's being classic willie brown. coming up later tonight, we'll hear more of his remarks on tonight's newscast. live on treasure island, sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you for that update. well, pg&e is stepping up security at a substation near south san jose. that was attacked by a sniper last year. the utility plans to install opaque fencing around the perimeter of that substation and several others so no one can see inside. a sniper fired 150 rounds at the metcalf substation and caused $15 million in damage. the fbi won't comment on the investigation but some believe it was an act of domestic terrorism. >> work on the fence is scheduled to start or should start sometime in the next few months and metcalf will be the first substation we're working on. >> he also says alarms will also be added along with other measures. the project will cost $86 million over a three-year period.

that could lead to higher rates for customers but it's too early to tell if that will happen. three students in alameda were sent to the hospital this morning because of a gas leak in a classroom. it happened at the high school on central avenue in the west end. about a dozen students were inside the classroom at the time. it's not clear what caused the leak but school officials say it has been contained. they say the three hospitalized students were sent in for observation. five other students were sent home. the rest of the school was not affected. despite the recent rainfall, east bay residents may be asked to cut the amount of water they use. at the meeting this afternoon, east bay m.u.d. is expected to decide whether to ask rate payers to you voluntary a reduce water usage by 010%. some -- by 10%. some residents say even though a 10% cut may not sound like a lot, for those conserving already, it is. >> we can't already cut back 10%. we already don't use water.

we take short showers and -- but i think it's a good idea because i think people are -- i see people wasting water all of the time. >> 's cording to east bay m.u.d., the recent rain brought the levels to about 63% of capacity but the district has only received under half of the runoff it normally gets during the rainy season. oakland police are looking for whoever shot and killed a woman on an east oakland street. police responded to shots fired around 9:45 last night on the 1400 block of 88th avenue near international boulevard. officers found the woman outside an apartment building there suffering from gunshot wounds. she was pronounced dead at the scene. witnesses reported hearing at arrest a dozen gunshots. potential suspects or a motive for the shooting are not yet known. oakland police are searching for four men they say robbed eight construction workers at gunpoint. it happened yesterday afternoon on 23rd street in west oakland. they stole wallets, cash and cell phones.

police say this is the latest in the spike of construction rob ribs in oakland. police are searching for two men involving thefts of gift cards. thousand they stole thousands of dollars that weren't even in the register. here's more. >> reporter: surveillance cameras captured photos of these two men who held up the 7- eleven on springs road. it wasn't cash te were after. they overtook the clerk, loaded thousands of dollars onto prepaid gift cards. police say one of the men kept the clerk here in this back storage room while the other man was busy up at the register quickly load upping those cards. police say the pair managed to get away with more than $7,000 and it's clear they have some background experience. >> you have to know what you are doing. i mean, opening the register is one thing, to load cards is another. >> i would assume one of them

has worked in retail. >> reporter: this lieutenant says it makes sense these suspected robbers are opting for gift cards. first off, they are untraceable. on top of that, you can get a whole lot more money than you could by emptying the register. >> at 4:00 a.m., they have a very limited amount of cash in the car register. it's generally less than $100. >> reporter: during both robberies, the same woman was on duty and her coworker said she was shaken up by the back- to-back holdups. this fellow clerk is frustrated by the crimes. >> i'm doing what i have to could to earn a dollar. i feel that other people can, too. don't have to do what they are doing. >> reporter: investigators don't think the men were armed as they carried out this gift card scheme. a unique crime that vallejo police have never seen before. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. the redwood city police department is using a popular social media site to help people find stolen property. it's using the photo sharing website pinterest to find

stolen property recovered by officers. police have posted photos of bicycles, watches and jewelry. >> in the past, we would have to bring victims in to physically look at property. by using this social media site, it gives us the ability to show it to a lot of people and they can do it from their home or office. >> the police posts have helped reunite three victims with their stolen property. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a roof collapse at a vacant san jose warehouse. firefighters were checking reports of water flowing down the street near mayberry and north king roads. crews used sonar to make sure no one was trapped inside. they say it's possible the weight of the recent rain caused the collapse. the cute little girl who stole the hearts of millions has passed. a look back at the life of shirley temple and how her woodside neighbors are remembering her. fog is clearing out and

the news. >> she liked her privacy. ♪ i'm the good ship lollipop ♪ >> reporter: she starred in 30 featured films. she brought joy to an america slowly coming out of the great depression. temple is often credited with saving 20th century fox from bankruptcy but her film career slowly fizzled when she got older. mgm wanted her to play the lead in the wizard of oz but fox wouldn't let her. she's still the youngest person to win an academy award at the age of 6. she had a nonalcoholic drink named after her and had all kinds of merchandise after her. despite becoming an ambassador to ghana and czechoslovakia as an adult, this was her childhood she was always known for. >> over the years when you talk to her about that, she would say she had a hard time relating to that child because

warning for companies considering doing business in iran. >> i can tell you that they do so at their own peril right now because we will come down on them like a ton of bricks. you know, with respect to the sanctions that we control and we expect full compliance. >> reporter: tonight, the white house plans to host the state dinner for the french president and tomorrow president hollande is set to visit the bay area where he's scheduled to meet with leaders in silicon valley. california is ranking near the top when it comes to the number of students in advance placement classes. the number of students who took at least one a.p. exam during their high school years in -- inceebsed by 77% over the past decade. about two in ten members in the class of 2013 took the a.p. test which is the 6th highest participation in the u.s. police at the university of southern california and ucla are looking for whoever

distributed propane, racist and sexist fliers around the campuses. the leaflets were mailed anonymously to asian-american student centers at both schools and contain language about asian women dating white men. the fliers triggered a pro-- protest rally yesterday at ucla. the recent rain is being blamed for causing a big branch for a tree to break off and seriously damaging cars in the north beach neighborhood. neighbors say they heard and felt the branch break off the large ficus tree around 8:30 this morning on lombard street near mason. they said they felt the street shake. nobody was injured but the branch fell on and damaged three cars. mainly dry out there for today. we do have a lot of leftover moisture from the weekend system and that's why we continue to see those clouds out there. at times, the sunshine and then more cloud cover. give you a look at the east bay hills where they are looking a

whole lot more green than last week. you can see the clouds mixed in with blue sky. we have low level clouds, high level clouds. i are ex -- i will explain why. the low level clouds still inside the bay in and around the bay. napa, mostly cloudy skies. santa rosa, mostly sunny skies. we have conditions in between. for today, a mix of sun and clouds. partly sunny to partly cloudy at sometimes. drifting south into areas like fremont, mountain view, from the peninsula into the east bay, we have partly to mostly cloudy skies. some of these clouds are high clouds drifting in up over the ridge of high pressure. that's begun to strengthen over other area. the sinking air associated with that ridge of high pressure mixed with that low level moisture remaining from the weekend and that's why we ended up with the patchy dense fog. even a fog advisory over part rts of the bay area -- parts of the bay area early this morning. we'll continue to see the clouds pour into the area. get going tomorrow morning, you can see we're mostly clear. a few high clouds in the forecast but we'll continue

with the low level moisture. i think we'll wake up, once again, with dense fog in many areas of the bay area as we get going wednesday morning. take a look at what's happening here by wednesday mowning. we -- morning. we have rain showers over northern california. these will slip into this area by wednesday. not a huge deal. we're looking at the possibility of a few scattered showers moving into the north bay on wednesday. we'll be tracking that. could see anywhere from one to -- let than .10. most of us will remain dry. at this hour, temperatures remain in the upper 40s to upper 50s. napa, chilly one with a mostly cloudy condition. 49 right now. 57 in san francisco. for the afternoon, low and mid- 60s with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies. high clouds for your afternoon and the extended forecast showing you again temperatures will remain generally mild. overnight lows will be on the cool side but not too bad.

singles is changing. they are removing artificial preservatives from their single wrapped slices. the changes will affect the full and light fat recipe. a slaughterhouse in petaluma has voluntary seized operations after more than 8 billion pounds of beef was recalled. the meat was not fully inspected. thele includes all of the -- the meat include all of the meat processed at the rancho feeding last year. the usda says they processed is diseased and unsound animals without inspection. rancho is the last house serving in the north bay. jamie anderson is showing her appreciation for the support she's getting from a young fan from the bay area. anderson tweeted this picture of the letter she received from a san jose second grader named lee ann. she starts the letter by saying, dear jamie anderson, i'm so proud you made the team. i've been reading about you.
