. good morning, everyone. it's saturday february 15th. i'm mike. >> and i'm claudine wong. we'll check with rosemary, could it be that rain is coming. >> we're off to a dry start, a cloudy start this morning. a little patchy fog out there. the afternoon is going to be dry, we have rain approaching, it's going to be moving in during the evening hours. it will start in the north bay first and slide its way south. we'll have a look at the numbers, what we can expect for the afternoon and we'll timeline that rain, its arrival and how long i expect it to be around and seattle snow, more on that coming up. >> we have more information about a car chase that we first reported on the news. they tried to pull over a stolen van. the pursuit ended at 98th avenue. the van slammed into several vehicles and caught fire. it was the driver of the stolen van who died at the scene,

drivers in the other vehicles were also injured. an officer suffered a cut on his wrist during the afternoon. police are investigating a deadly stubbing. this he found the first victim, he died at the scene. two more calls came in, one about a car crash and another telling them that other stabbing victims had been dropped off at the hospital. all the incidents they believe are connected. they're trying to figure out exactly what happened. motorcyclist fell 30 feet to his death after going off the side of an onramp in san francisco. it happened on tenth street. he fell out to southbound highway 101. it doesn't appear other vehicles were involved, but it's unclear whether speed or alcohol were a factor. the onramp was shut down for an hour and a half while

the crash was cleared. police plan to expect to release his identity after they notify his family. an event that dates back 100 years will take place in the heart of the city. we'll look at the chinese parade and the rush to get everything done. >> reporter: there are crews doing last minute work on the bleachers. there are drills going, the count down is on for 5:00 tonight. hundreds of thousands of spectators will be watching the parade. it will kick off at market and second street. we're in union square right now. that's where a lot of the bleachers have been set up. this is the broadcast center for ktvu. this is a cherry picker radio right here that has a camera. the giant lights will be flooding the street once the

parade begins. there are 22 floats in this year's parade. most of them will feature a horse. it's the year of the horse in the chinese zodiac, they're quick to learn independence, active energetic, they have a positive attitude towards life. they have put 6200 hours of work to make it all happen. >> we've been working so hard, since december, the shops have been open 7 days a week. a lot of us are here seven days a week. a lot of it is seeing the closure happen. >> they spent 1,000 hours of work preparing the floats compared to last year. several floats had to be rebuilt because of the warehouse being flooded by rain earlier this month. 650,000 people are expected to watch it as it passes by on the streets of it san francisco and

severe, california is our biggest economy, california is our biggest agricultural producer, what happens here matters to every working american. >> he suggested climate change and the link to severe weather of hurricanes in the atlantic ocean. here's the break down of federal aid, he pledged $183 million for drought relief. the package includes $100 million for a livestock disaster program. and to help families that suffered from the drought and there's $5 million for water conservation. >> much of the northeast and south are digging out of this latest winter storm. the storm has killed 25 people and about 400,000 homes and businesses are without electricity. major cities including new york boston and st. louis have gotten two to three times more

into several vehicles and caught fire on the ten o'clock news last night. someone had died we, now, know that it was the driver of the stolen van who was pronounced dead at the scene. drivers in the other vehicles were injured and the officer suffered a cut on his wrist during the incident. 61-year-old michael served more than 3 decade in the sheriff's position. he died last week snorkeling in maui. he was caught in a current. he collapsed and died. the service is set for 10:00 a.m. at the hillside christian center on anderson road in napa. it will include a honor guard. there were 3 flu deaths related deaths this season. it's more than double, this year for the entire flu season

last year. another 41 cases still being investigated. here's a look at the most flu deaths so far. los angeles tops the list, sacramento county 23 and san bern and do you know owe 18, fresno county next with 17. we've counted 43 flu related deaths so far and that includes the death of one person in san mateo county that was just confirmed this week. they still have the most deaths with 14. >> a san jose firefighter is custody accused of child molestation with. he's sending shock waves through the fire department and the community. he served as an outreach officer after an injury limited his field work. he was arrested on sex related and drug charges. he seized his computer and other offices at home. >> charges as we understand

indicate that there would have been victims in these crimes, i think everyone feels a heavy heart right, now, for anybody who may have been hurt in the situation. investigators say their concern has community outreach officer involve children. prosecutors have not finished reviewing the case but he could appear in the court as soon as tuesday. >> they've been cleared in a denver officer involved shooting, they chased the car and reached speeds up to 20 miles per hour. one day they cornered that driver, they ran and fired that weapon 15 times. the driver ronald, a three- strike fell on died at the scene. the officers in coolly and adam jenkins lawfully killed them. several members are celebrating promotions, in the police department. they were given their new badges yesterday afternoon. the officers are part of the administration of the new

police chief, the police chief says it's important to encourage the officers to serve the city as best they can. >> use good judgment and commonsense. be decisive, responsive and empathetic. the chief says the department is facing problem with recruitment and staff shortages. the promotions are his plan to solve the problem. in oakland they're trying to find recruits for an understaffed police force. the enrollment remains low. it's far fewer than the home grown academies in san francisco. hiring more oakland residents would help where officers have the hardest times solving crimes. an elementary school teacher is free on charge.

she pleaded not guilty of furnishing marijuana and one count of poisoning. at least 8 people said they became sick after eating the tainted food. she's due back in court in april. concern is rising after a series of car break-ins in the school parking lot. she is one of four victims that have been targeted about i the break-ins. someone broke no her car and stole her registration and insurance papers. someone broke into her family's home and took jewelry and the keys to ore their other cars. >> the first few days were frightening for us to spend the night there. and we had to make special arrangements to sleep somewhere else. >> she believes her house being burglarized is related to the car break in. the school principle is allowing one person to

continuously patrol the parking lot. traffic to tahoe was what mess as people from the bay area headed to the they-day holiday weekend. they're looking at interstate 80. they can see a lot of traffic, the traffic is moving along just fine right now. yesterday they did see a steady flow of cars, the president's holiday weekend is typically the last big weekend for ski resorts of the year. for the first first time all of them are open for the holiday weekend. that's thanks to the storm on resorts last week. we've been watching for the forecast for months and dreading and getting excited. >> are you regretting not going to colorado instead. my first time snowboarding was here, it wasn't as close a fact as it is right now. prior to the storm, symptom tahoe ski resorts reported a total of 06 inches of january, more snow is expected to fall

been working hard for weeks now. that crew led by dave thomas who has been building floats nor so many years he lost count. he's been talking about retiring for a while, but it's been talking about how hard it is to get a replacement. stephanie has been working for thomas for the last six years. >> i'm doing a little well, she's doing very well. i'm worried that he's going to fire me before i want to go. >> i'm the exactly the person for this job. i'm the kind of crawley nor this job. >> the schedule is crazy. ten parades 150 floats around and a constant turnover in employees. this parade is the biggest for this crew. you can hang around for a couple of more, but taking a back seat in the process. we're counting down for the celebration. it begins in 9.5 hours.

the crew hit the streets as final preparations began for the facebook page raid. >> an anticipation starting to build. >> reporter: if you are planning to watch the new year parade you can see dancers, dragons and glittering floats. right here you can see part of the street, they are getting ready to close it off a few hours from now. they are putting the finishing touches on. this is a 120 year tradition. that's how long the parade has been going on. it starts at five. it starts market and second. by the time the floats arrive to this section it'll be around six and they will pause in front of the bleachers and the cameras because we will be broadcasting this parade live. we got a behind the scenes look at some of the 22 floats in

this parade. many of them feature the horse because it's the year of the horse. the people working on these floats, the artists and builders have put a ton of work into it just to give you the idea of the amount of materials they have been doing. nine hundred extension cords used. some of the floats will be interactive. people in the crowd will be able to text commands to one electronic float and that horse on the float will then do things like jump, run and bow depending on what type of texts come in. some of the people said what they are looking forward to seeing most. >> the dragons. >> i like the dragon. >> reporter: this is video of last year's parade. this year the crowds are expected to be just as big if

that total includes a death of a person in san mateo that was confirmed earlier this week. santa clara has been hit the hardest in the bay area with 14 people there dying from the flu. >> the lieutenant governor is no longer supporting california's high speed rail project. he made the announcement yesterday during a radio interview. the lieutenant governor said that he would rather redirect the nine billion dollars in voter improved bonds to more pressing needs. he said he is one of only a few willing to speak publicly against it. yosemite is dropping its plan to ban bike and raft rentals. the decision after a year long battle which sparked comments from more than 30,000 people. park officials say that the goal is to restore natural conditions along the valley's river but many say that the proposal went to far. now there is a new plan that saves the rentals and the swimming pools and the historic sugar pine stone bridge. >> asked to pay up or be

volunteers spending the next few hours finishing up the floats in this year's parade in san francisco. street around union square will be shut down for the event. rosemary said there is a chance it'll rain. if you want to stay home and watch we will have live coverage of the parade on ktvu starting at six tonight. the driver of a stolen van on the run from chp crashed in to several vehicles in east oakland. theunidentified suspect died at the scene. there were injuries among the drivers of the other cars as well as an officer who hurt his wrist during the chase. haywood police are investigating a deadly stabbing. police got a call about a fight on b street. when they arrived they say they found the first victim dead. over the next 15 minutes two more calls came in. one about a car crash, the other about two stabbing victims dropped off at the hospital. police say they believe that all the incidents are connected. >> a 21,000-dollar reward is being offered for information leading to the person who shot and killed three california sea

otters. the shootings happened in september near monterey. two of the sea otters were shot in the head, one in the back. california sea otters threatened protected. killing one of them is a crime punishable by fines and possibly jail time. state attorney general is working to extradite a man accused of using a revenge porn website as a means of extortion. he is under arrest. >> it's about pure profit, about lining his pockets off the embarrassment and the exposure of people who are victims. >> the website is called win by state. it lets people post pictures of their victims in com compromising compromising positions. >> deborah has more on a scam

being reported all round the bay area. >> they took $900. >> reporter: the call to jamal sounded official. pg&e claiming there was a snag with his online payment and he had to pay now or loose power at his cafe in just two hours. all he could imagine was his food spoiling. >> i rushed to like save the place. didn't think about it. >> reporter: rushed to a store, callers instructions and loaded $900 on this prepaid card. >> once you load it they ask you to give them the number on the back and they get the number off it. >> our ability to catch them -- are pretty much low to zero when i try tracking them you usually end up running into a dead end in a foreign country. >> makes you want to find them. really and catch them. >> reporter: cafe customers have sympathy and suspicious. >> how did they get the account information? how did they know so much.

>> reporter: pg&e down plays hacking orrin side hacking or inside involvement. >> we safe guard information. they said they never solicit payment by phone and doesn't disconnect power suddenly. >> we would have documentation, we would have follow up. there would be more information than just a on the spot i need it now payment. >> reporter: jamill learned he had been duped when he came to pay the rest of his balance. >> i couldn't even breathe. i -- felt like [inaudible]. >> reporter: his business is only three months old. it's a tough lesson but one he is sharing to warn others. >> if you receive any calls, do not dot. it's to late for me. don't do it. >> reporter: deborah reporting there. police say another restaurant owner in the city was scammed the same way. people in san francisco, san jose and pacifica have also been targeted. traffic is again moving
