now at 5:00 it's the biggest chinese new year parade outside of asia. here is a live picture. we'll show you how san francisco is celebrating the year of the horse. it could rain on that parade. i'm mark tamayo in the ktvu weather center. rain is expected across the bay area tonight. i will tell you when the wet weather will come to your neighborhood. broken glass lining a bay area street after several cars are broken into. >> everything was pulled out of my glove compartment. >> why some say this problem actually comes from a nearby park.

♪ >> music and color filling the streets of san francisco as the big chinese new year's celebration gets underway. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. it's all happening in union square. we're live from the parade staging there on market street. debbie, how is it looking out there now? >> reporter: we're in the middle of market street, just minutes away from the parade start. take a look down one block at second and market. you can see the color guard is poised and ready. the first gloat of the parade is -- float of the parade is ready to launch the year of the horse. there's so much anticipation, along with a hint of rain. hundreds of thousands turned out for this parade that goes back to the gold rush era. 150-year tradition in san francisco. in the final minutes of

preparation, we found a dance crew practicing on the sidewalk, beating their drums, preparing for the long procession ahead through union square and into chinatown. more than 100 floats, marching bands, acrobattists will be entertaining the crowd along with ms. china usa and her court. you ready for it? it will be tough. >> it will be challenging. it will be a long time of walking and i'm ready. >> reporter: the culmination is the golden dragon, 200 feet long. a spectacular puppet carried by 100 martial artists. so the parade starts at 5:15. we are here to watch it go off. it ends about 8:00. of the course, during that time, streets in this vicinity are closed. everyone just standing by waiting to watch the parade

start gal galloping our way. back to you. >> thank you. >> bart has been operating longer trains all day long to try to get people to the parade. they will be running extra rains after the parade. san francisco muni will provide extra service after the parade. many bus lines will be rerouted until the streets are reopen and light rail and cable car service is affected in the area. expect some delays. if you can't make it to the parade in person, you can watch it right here on ktvu. our coverage begins right after this newscast at 6:00 with julie haner and ben fong torres. you can follow along on twitter. as you saw, a lot of clouds in san francisco as the wet weather system is expected to bring the thirsty bay area some much-needed rain. >> we want to go to mark tamayo tracking the system. the system is moving in on the north bay. >> so far, in fact, santa rosa reporting light rain this afternoon since about the 2:00 hour. that rain line will gradually

spread to the south throughout the evening, especially for late tonight. take a look out towards san francisco, union square, live camera. it's 57 degrees. winds right around 7 miles an hour. of course, the forecast for tracking the rain chances, i will tell you the beginning of the parade will be dry. but after 7:00 we have to bring in the chance for a few scattered showers. it looks like the bulk of the steady rainfall holds off until after the parade. you can see the time line throughout the evening hours, mainly in the 50s. around 52, 55 degrees. here is a look at the system on live stormtracker2, the one that will bring in the cloud cover and rain showers over the next three to six hours. not a lot of coverage to show you, the bulk of the action is up approaching mendocino county just to the north of ukiah. i suspect the radar will be covering between 6:00 and 9:00 this evening. here's the forecast model at 7:00. a few scattered showers moving in to parts of sonoma county.

we'll take this forecast model into the overnight hours with our next forecast update. also let you know if we have any more rain chances in your five-day forecast. you can follow mark and the rest of the ktvu meteorologists online for the very latest on bay area weather. they are posting updates even when we're not on the air. we're following some developing news right now near the parade site. the muni station is shut down after a man was struck by a train and killed. it happened around 2:40, the man fell from the platform. no estimate on when the station will be reopened. with the parade going on, many streets are shut down including that park of market street. hun muni advising people to use b.a.r.t. as an alternative. the northeast and mid- atlantic states are bracing for another winter storm. it's already been a season of stuck cars and canceled school

days. now, new york, new jersey and pennsylvania, as well as massachusetts, are expecting more snow, slush and slow travel. massachusetts in fact may get socked with as much as 15 inches tonight and tomorrow. >> under these conditions, it really isn't possible for us to keep the road clear and safe given the rate of snowfall. >> it's crazy. i wish the winter would stop. we keep getting hit over and over. >> and the east is still recovering from thursday after more than a thousand flights were canceled. sfo tells ktvu that flights from the east coast are running 30 to 40 minutes late due to the bad weather. that's after 15, 20-minute delays earlier. boston's logan airport is warning that flights may be canceled. as always best to check with your airline before heading to the airport. new at 5:00 an alarming trend across the area. an uptick in mail thefts

putting residents on alert. patti lee joins us live from marin county where residents are tackling the problem by going shopping. >> reporter: they are buying peace of mind in the form of heavy-duty anti-theft mailboxes. expecting a new credit card, a woman found her mail half open including her w-2. >> one side was ripped off so somebody could have looked inside and seen my social security number. >> reporter: the visa, nowhere to be found. >> they sent it weeks ago and i never got it. at that point, i thought i better file a fraud alert. >> reporter: she's one of dozens of victims posting warnings in the neighborhood. but marin county sheriff's department said the only way to protect yourself, a locked mailbox. we went to gold goodman's -- we

went with goldman to goodman's hardware. peace the mind does not come cheap. >> really crazy. people are buying a lot. >> reporter: the manager says locking mailboxes have been the hottest item for weeks. >> daily we've been selling 10, 12. >> reporter: this is a problem that can affect neighborhoods across the bay area. just a few weeks ago, police grappled with the same issue in belmont. we've heard of more isolated incidents in montclair. the best way to protect yourself is vig lens and a locked mailbox. more details on how to keep your mail and tax information safe. getting a locked mailbox can help a lot. people can rent a post-office box. you can choose to have your documents sent to you electronically. if you think your tax documents have been stolen, the irs says to contact them immediately

along with the postal service. hayward police say three stabbings in the city that left one man dad seem to be related. officers responded to a fight in a parking lot on b street near foothill boulevard outside of buffalo bills brewery after midnight. the man was found with a stab wound. he died there at the scene. about five minutes later, police were called to a car crash at a street and south garden avenue. the car was empty. officers learned two more stabbing victims have been dropped off at the local hospital. police are still trying to put together the chain of events. we have new information on a gruesome discovery in mendocino county. sheriff's officials said it appears a man found being mauled by dogs was already dead when the victim lapped. the victim was found -- hatch happened -- when the incident happened. the victim was found and the victim has not been identified.

speed or alcohol were factors but it does not appear that any other vehicles were involved. a warning tonight about car safety after a series of vehicle break-ins in san francisco. we've reported on the dramatic increase in the crime. new at 5:00, another hot spot. christien kafton is live to tell us about the large number of cars targeted on fulton between 17th and 24th avenue right next to golden gate park. >> reporter: if you have ever spotted broken glass by your car, you know how frustrating and expensive a car burglary can be. police say they are stepping up patrols to crack down on the burglars. this week neighbors broke up to pile after pile of broken glass on fulton street running along golden gate park. this man said the burglars struck wednesday night smashing the windows on nearly 20 cars, his was one of them. >> i walked out of the house in the morning. i noticed a whole -- a whole bunch of papers by my car.

i went over there. the window was broken into. everything was pulled out of the glove compartment. >> reporter: swenson says his car has been targeted before and estimates he's out between $2,000 and $3,000 in stolen items and repeated window repairs. he suspects the thieves live in golden gate park and wants the police to clear out the homeless camps. >> they are coming out in the middle of the night, coming across the street and taking whatever they can and going back. >> reporter: san francisco police are stepping up patrols in the area around the park. >> we have officers that are aware of it. they are looking for suspicious behavior related to auto burglaries and we're doing everything we can do to address the problem. >> reporter: police officers say thieves are looking for small valuable items like phones, music players and say to clear valuables out of your car any time you get out. >> another option, leave the glove compartment box open in view so if someone is looking to break in just to look in the glove box, they can see it's

empty. >> reporter: police say often cases like these are the work of one person or just a small group of people who commit the same crime over and over again. if they can catch the one person or the few people responsible, they say auto burglary rates usually drop off dramatically. we're live in san francisco, back to you. berkeley police are looking for a man who robbed a uc berkeley student at gunpoint. police say a 25-year-old woman was walking near dana and carlton when a man with a gun came up and grabbed her purse. it happened after 12:30 this morning. the robber ran away and got into a gray four-door car and drove off. president obama today called on congress to finish passing a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. >> it would lift millions of americans out of poverty and help millions more work their way out of poverty without requiring a single dollar in new taxes or spending. it will give more businesses more customers with more money no spend. that means growing the economy

for everyone. >> this week. president signed an order raising the minimum wage to federal california contractors. california's minimum wage is set to rise to $10 in 2016. >> those who work for a living -- >> students want oakland to boost the minimum wage to the highest in the bay area. the group lift up oakland rallied to collect signatures to raise the minimum page to $12.25. currently oakland's minimum wage is $8 an hour. supporters need 35,000 signatures to qualify for the november ballot. >> we don't want to find out and we're not victims -- we don't want a hand out and we're not victims. we want to provide for our kids and be better parents. >> this year san francisco's minimum wage went up to 10.74

an hour. in 2012, voters approved a wage hike in san jose to $10. woulder's learning more about a san francisco business where wildlife agents say they seized more than 2,000 pounds of illegal shark fins. they made the bust at the shop on huard street in san francisco. the humane society says the owner is part of a group that had challenged the legality of the state ban, the late saw that banned the sale of shark fins. that law went into effect last july. shark fins will also seized at an emeryville restaurant. the chinese new year's parade is underway. that parade celebrating the year of the horse. it features dozens of community groups and performers and those colorful floats. it's getting started. hundred of thousands of people are packing the streets. our live coverage starts after the newscast. >> you won't miss a thing.

you can see the streets are dry. but the smark spectators brought their umbrellas. mark said it's gonna rain. at least right now, it's dry. the last hour, there could be a few light rain showers approaching san francisco, especially after 7:00. right now, on live stormtracker2, a lot of cloud cover out there. the main rain is still up to the north of the bay area up towards eureka, cape mendocino. this was approaching the region. this will be the source of steady rainfall. as you can see, we do have a few returns approaching parts of the north bay. santa rosa reporting light rain. even if you are not covered, you can have the mist or drizzle out there. a little bit more in the way of coverage as you can see in northern portions of sonoma county. to the north of bodega bay, cloverdale, hirm 101 right now -- highway 101 right now. as far as the forecast, mostly cloudy skies. rain develops especially after the 8:00 hour. of course, we're looking out towards san francisco for the parade and looking out towards union square right now.

just some cloud. you can see some dry pavement at least in the short term. tomorrow morning overcast but clearing out into the afternoon hours. the storm we're talking about for tonight, the system is a short deal. late tonight, early tomorrow morning and then the sun/cloud mix in the five-day forecast. overnight lows in the morning will be cooler than this morning. low to mid-40s for santa rosa, napa. san francisco, 50 degrees. san jose to start out your sunday in the upper 40s. here's the system we're watching, dropping into northern california already. this will be the source of rainfall for tonight, especially as i mentioned after 8:00. definitely some more clouds in the short term rainfall develops for tonight. as far as forecast expectations, remember a week ago, we're talking about several inches of rainfall tonight and into tomorrow morning. a fraction of that. a few hundredths to possibly .5 for north bay hills. central portions of the bay dropping to about .25 in the

south bay. about .500 or .10 with the system moving into the region late tonight and into tomorrow morning. here's the forecast model. at 7:00, not a lot of cltion. but mist and drizzle. tonight at 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, increase in coverage across the region and in intensity as well for san francisco, possibly san mateo, oakland and concord. and then overnight, this might wake you up with the rain pushing into the south bay early sunday morning at 3:00, 4:00. and the rest of the day we're dry and sunday with mostly sunny skies. and really no more strong storms to talk about, at least yet with the slight chance late tuesday and into wednesday. but no significant rainfall. as far as forecast highs for tomorrow, we're thinking upper 50s to lower 60s. santa rosa, 62. hayward, 61. antioch the forecast high of 64. some more neighborhoods, more 60s out there for san jose. morgan hill and gilroy. here is a look ahead at your five-day forecast with your

weekend always in view. clearing skies for your sunday, partly cloudy into monday. and then our next hope of a few light showers and it's not much that will be by tuesday night up in the north bay. a slight chance of a shower wednesday morning and then partly cloudy skies by thursday. but after tonight, really no -- not much in the way of heavy rain in the forecast. we're talking about more snow in the sierra. we'll have that coming up in about 25 minutes. >> thank you, mark. traffic in northern california could go from bad to worse this weekend as a repaving project forces closure of the 405. that's the san diego freeway. the project has been dubbed jam- zilla, meaning a monster traffic jam is expected. crews will be improving six miles of northbound lanes over the sem sem sepelveda pass. the plan is to finish the project tuesday. a twist to tell you about in the case compared to the killing of trayvon martin. what a florida jury failed to

a startling discovery at dullus airport outside of washington, d.c. today. a dead body was found in the landing gear of a south african airways plane. the aircraft was parked at a remote area of the airport when

grounds crews noticed a man's body inside the plane's wheel well. the investigation into the death has not disrupted flights in or out of the very busy airport. in a case compared to the trayvon martin trial, a florida jury failed to reach a verdict today on the most serious kauent of first-degree murder -- count of first-degree murder. michael dunn was convicted of four other cluents, including attempted second-degree murder for shooting into a van filled with african-american teenagers after he asked them to turn down their music. 17-year-old jordan davis was killed. the prosecution will have to retry dunn on the primary charge. with the convictions today, dunn faces up to 16 years in prison. billie jean king said today that she will be heading to sochi for the closing ceremony of the winter olympics. she missed the opening ceremony because her mother was ill. she was chosen by the white house as a member of president obama's official dellagation.

kaitlyn is another member of the delegation. king said she's concerned with the lbgt community in russia and hopes the olympics within a watershed moment for the universal acceptance of all people. south bay figure skater polina edmunds is in sochi. she tweeted this photo of herself on the plane on the way to russia. the sophomore from mitty high school is at her first olympic game. she will compete in ladies figure stating starting wednesday. there's within outpouring of support for el listen paige who came out as a lesbian. >> i suffered for years because i was scared to be out. my spirit suffered. my mental health suffered. and my relationships suffered. i'm standing here today with all of you on the other side of that pain. >> the 26-year-old juno star made the speech at a human

rights conference in las vegas last night. a number of hollywood celebrities took to social media in support of page's decision. kevin bacon tweeted i'm so moved by this. a decision to save the flappy bird fell short of the goal. they asked to bring back the bird but didn't get enough signatures. the celebration is underway in san francisco right now as thousands -- hundreds of thousands of people turn out for the big chinese parade. debra is there and we'll go live to her after the break. the family of a northern california flu victim is hoping for a miracle. the emotional plea to the public to do what they did not. and a new effort to prevent

square a few minutes ago with thousands of people to watch. >> debora villalon is one of those people watching the parade and joins us live with more. debora? >> reporter: the year of the horse is in full gallop now. take a look. this parade is underway making its way past us here on market street. we're on the start line. so the crowds are so excited to be the first ones to see the spectacular floats and marching bands as they wind their way to union square and into chinatown. there are more than 100 entries. they are staged on the side streets now just waiting for their chance to enter the procession. marching bands from cal policy and uc davis warmed up at justin herman plaza before. that gave the crowd an impromptu concert as they worked out the preparade jitters. what about this parade makes it an honor? >> this parade, of course, in san francisco, which is a very beautiful, big city for us to

cnyparade. dozens of people came out to support a man today as he faces the toughest fight of his life. >> gonna be fine. >> he was cosm for thed by his son and -- he was comforted by his son and daughter at a fund- raiser. he was recently diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer. he's been with the fire department for almost three decades. today's fund-raiser was held at his former firehouse, station 74. that station was closed due to budget cuts. but he's worked tirelessly to try to have it reopened. >> my dad, anyone who knows him, he's the most generous, loving guy. he will give to anyone. it was so nice to see how many people know what kind of person he is and they want to do the same for him. >> his family just learned yesterday the city accepted his workers' compensation claim. that means they will have additional financial help to pay for specialized treatment.

the family of a northern california woman is praying for a miracle as she battles the deadly h1n1 flu virus. 61-year-old leslie bunning is one of hundreds of people who contracted the virus during a particularly difficult flu season. kevin oliver reports bunning's family is urging others to get vaccinated. >> reporter: a wife, mother, and grandmother. leslie bunning's children say she never got ill until the strain hit their family around christmas. in january, they admitted her to kaiser medical center in roseville. >> pretty much couldn't walk when we brought her in. >> reporter: her husband and children said their family never considered getting a flu shot before this. >> kids got it, old people got it. but not healthy people who, you know, it wasn't -- we weren't at risk. i didn't think my parents were at risk. i didn't think i was or my sister. >> reporter: now they fear it may cost the 61-year-old her life. she's been in the icu unit for more than a month. they've personally witnessed

the pain and suffering grow as relatives of other flu victims have joined them in the icu. >> we've seen a lot of misery. every one of these people and their families up here are very brave. >> yeah. >> every single one of these people are afraid. >> reporter: now the family has become advocates for flu vaccination, encouraging everyone to get a potentially life-saving shot. >> this is senseless. makes no sense. >> reporter: and they also get a glimmer of hope from prayers besaid on their behalf from around the world. >> every time that we have organized these groups of people, something positive has happened. >> reporter: kevin oliver, ktvu channel 2 news. >> state health officials announced that 41 new flu- related death have been confirmed in california during the past week. that makes for 243 flu-related deaths sea for this season. that's more than double the 106 deaths during the entire flu season last year. another 41 deaths are still

being investigated. here in the bay area, we've counted 43 flu-related deaths, including one new death in san mateo county confirmed thissing with. santa clara still has the most deaths of the bay area counties with 14. fears over possible salmonella contamination have caused a washington state company to issue a recall. they are recalling more than 100 tons of dried egg products. the products were shaped nationwide. usda officials say the recall was class one, meaning it carries a high risk. a state senator introduced a bill that would allow people living in the country illegally to buy health insurance in the state. the bill calls for the setup of an exchange to be run by dovered california that -- coved california that would

cater to illegal immigrants. after president obama's visit to the drought-ridden central valley there is a new effort to prevent climate disaster. john kerry toured a manufacturing plant in beijing. the u.s. and china pledge to work together. >> in order to meet the global and the economic climate change, undeniably all of us will have to do more. >> you can see the bottom, see the rocks, see the dirt. there's nothing. >> central valley farmers are grappling with the worst drought in decades. president obama yesterday pledged $183 million in drought relief funds and said he will ask congress for a billion dollars to address the climate change. the crowd funding site kickstarter.com announced it fell victim to hackers. no credit card information was compromised but hackers got phone numbers, e-mail and

mailing addresses as well as password. kickstarter said it was informed about the hack by police aides wednesday night and took action immediately. a reward is being offered to try to track down peculiars who stole laptops from a napa middle school. the school district says someone stole laptops and other items from rivers school on old sonoma road sometime last weekend. the district also says there was vandalism involved. a $500 reward is being offered for information leading to the burglar. valentine's day tradition in san francisco took all night to clean up. table a look at this photo. it was tweeted by the city's department of public works. they say crews were up until 4:00 this morning cleaning up mountains of feathers from justin herman plaza. hundreds took part in the annual valentine's day pillow fight. people hit each other with pillows over and over. you can see the feathers were flying. i'm not quite sure why people enjoy doing this. the public works department estimated the cost of the

happening now -- hundreds of thousands of people are lining the streets of san francisco for the chinese new year parade. the spectacle marks the beginning of the year of the horse. there are floats, marching bands and a lot of performers.

this is market street as the people make their way up the street and you can see the pavement is dry. a lot of people lining the parade route behind the barricades there waiting for the next float to come by and the big, long dragon procession and all of the fireworks at the end which us is -- which is always a lot of fun. a lot of noise out there. that's when robert handa puts the earplugs on and the goggles. >> that -- that's the moment right there. but obviously, something that we're keeping a close eye on is rain clouds. let's check in with mark tamayo soto find out -- to find out if it will be dry. >> off to a nice start. bill martin is in the route. he will text me when he sees the raindrop out there. right now, it's dry. cloudy skies. current temperature, 57 degrees. winds right around 10 miles an hour. here is the forecast -- at least in the short term, more cloud cover. but after 7:00 or -- well, after 7:00, we have to bring in

the chance for a few scattered light showers. but it looks like all of the activity, the main organized moves in as the rainfall picks up late tonight and early tomorrow morning. you can see what's happening on live stormtracker2, a lot of cloud cover over the bay area. not all of the green reaching the ground but things are beginning to change especially up in the north bay. santa rosa reporting some light rain since about 3:00 this afternoon. you can see the coverage picking up a little bit here up toward parts of -- right around marin county out towards mount tam as well. you can pick up the coverage for santa rosa. this is the change from parts of sonoma county. we'll move the maps to southern marin out as well. out towards the marin headlunds, the cloud will be out there. as far as the forecast tonight, more clouds and rainfall developing. it's going to be a short-term deal with the rainfall late tonight into early tomorrow morning. and then tomorrow some morning clouds, a bit of a breeze. the extended forecast, sun/cloud mix with no real strong storms showing up in the five-day forecast. in the short term, you can see

the cold front moving into northern california. for tonight we have the rainfall picking up with more clouds out there. saturday clouds, mostly cloudy skies. rainfall develops for tonight. forecast expectations, a few hundreds of an inch to possibly .5 of rainfall. for the coast at hills, we could have .5 right around the central portions of the bay, .25. the south bay, the system tapers off in san jose, possibly .10 with this system. this will be a quick mover and sunday. no threat after sunrise and a lot of clear skies with mostly sunny skies. here is our forecast model -- put it into motion at 7:00 tonight. you can see the clouds and possibly a few light rain showers out there. the rainfall picks up in coverage and intensity between 9:00 and 11:00 tonight, especially for late tonight with this moving to -- moving to the south and then possibly scattered shower at 5:00 or 6:00 and then clearing skies for the rest of the day on

sunday. wind pick up. could have winds around 10, 20 miles an hour. as far as the sierra, this is sugar bowl. a lot of cloud cover out there. no snowflakes. that will be changing late tonight. basically, the same timing as the bay area for the sierra as well. they will have some snowfall. snow levels initially at 7,000 feet. tomorrow coming down to around 5500 feet and expectations around 3 to 6 inches. no winter storm watchings or warnings in place. for tomorrow, starting out the day with partly to mostly cloudy skies. 55 to 60 degrees and then mostly sunny skies. should replace the clouds with the sunshine. temperatures will be in the upper 50s to the mid-60s for the afternoon. morning overcast. skies becoming partly to mostly sunny. temperatures will be in the low to mid-60s. san jose, 64 and morgan hill 66 degrees. here is a look ahead to your five-day forecast, with weekend always in view. partly sunny skies on monday. we had high hopes for more rainfall with this

been written yet. the pipers and catchers showed up to their respective camps yesterday. today, the giants and as had their first workout. fred englis is enjoying february in arizona. said it was about perfect for baseball yesterday. i imagine that's still the case today, fred? >> reporter: it was another picture-perfect day here in the valley of the sun. it was the warmest february 15th in phoenix history. 86 degrees. just as warm right here next door in scottsdale. but luckily, the giants' pitchers and catchers had all of their work in before the real heat settled in. all of those giants pitchers and catchers took the field at scottsdale stadium about 10:07 a.m. local time. that included 38-year-old pitcher tim hudson. tim hudson, who is now replacing barry zito,well, he's just looking good as usual.

didn't have the drama of the 1960 or 1980 meetings but the u.s. and russia played today in olympic hockey. when that happens, you can expect intensity. in today's case, a very unusual ending after a 2-2 tie they went to the 8th round of a shootout with the u.s. pulling out a 3-2 win. tj oshy scored four times in the shootout including the winter in olympic hockey, the same player can take multiple shots after the first three rounds of the shootout. cam fowler and joe pavelski scored the two u.s. goals in regulation. this was group play. the u.s. is 2-0 with one game
