gunfire outside of one of the bay area's busiest shopping small sends a crowd fleeing. tonight the search for the shooter. i'm heather holmes. >> and i'm ken wayne. shots were fired and sent people rushing. that's right outside the west field shopping mall. the gunman is still out there on the lose and the victim may not make it. a b.a.r.t. stairwell is where the wounded man tried to escape. this all happened around 25:00 after 7:00 tonight.

police made the decision to block that entrance to protect the crime scene from getting trampled. the gunman ran away and the wounded man tried to get down into the b.a.r.t. station. you see officers right now but collapsed at the bottom of those stairs. he was taken to san francisco general hospital with life threatening injuries. >> what i do know is that it appears at this point that the victim was targeted. and this was not a random act. so there's no threat to public safety. there's a number of people in that area at the mall, on that block. at this point it appears this is an isolated incident. >> the powell street was closed but is back to normal. a police source tells us there is ample surveillance video from the mall and store fronts. but the first video they looked at shows the victim fell down but not the gunman.

they did not see the gunman on the video at least not with the clarity they would need for this investigation. his victim has critical injuries and considering the congested location it is very fortunate that more people were not hurt. now to the south bay where a man was hit and killed in a hit-and-run crash. this happened not far from capital expressway in san jose. patti lee joins u -- us where police are still sifting through the information. >> reporter: police are interviewing who they believe were involved in today's homicide but it's not clear

how. >> when officers arrived they realized it was a little bit more. >> reporter: police tell us the victim might have been stabbed by one or more assailants before he was run over. the attackers that may have been injured during the process. >> there was an altercation in the middle of the roadway. prior to the victim being struck by a vehicle. >> but the fight that ended here likely started about a mile away with an argument at a flea market. >> it was a fight between a boyfriend and a girl friend. she's pregnant. and the other guys didn't like it so they chased him out of here. >> reporter: a vendor said that he could in the believe that an argument ended in gunfire. >> it was murder. it was intentional. they went after him with a car and hit him. >> reporter: they've heard various accounts from witnesses but they still need to sift

through witness testimony and surveillance video. we learned at least one other person was hurt during that hit- and-run accident. including a potential suspect injured while conducting a horrific crime. live from san jose, patti lee, ktvu news. investigators say they arrived on scene and found a man and woman each suffering from at least one gunshot wound. they were rushed to the hospital. both are expected to survive. it's unclear what the motive is for that shooting. the man struck and killed by a munni train yet has been identified as 55-year-old michael mendez. he was homes and reportedly kept his backpack under the munni train. it might have fallen as he was

trying to retrieve it. in florida angry protesters are demanding that the state attorney resign following the second of two murder cases in which a white man gunned down a black teenager. late yesterday a jury convicted michael dunn of multiple counts of murder but dead locked over a count of attempted murder. protesters in oakland are also angry over the failure to convict dunn on that murder charge. they demonstrated on 14th and broadway. saying the situation is too similar to the shooting of trayvon martin. in that case zimmerman was cleared. >> black and white are painted with a big bulls eye where any

vigilante can shoot them down. >> reporter: dunn is expected to face a retrial on that first degree murder charge. his convictions yesterday mean he will likely spend decades in prison. by a sonoma county sheriff deputy. release the findings of their investigations into the shooting death of lopez. the march is set to take place at the old courthouse. the district attorney says she has not completed her investigation. as california continues to deal with the drought the state has been quietly developing more than a dozen desalination plant including one that will serve the bay area.

authorities in redding burned a mobile home to the ground today to get rid of more than 60 pounds of explosive materials. sheriff deputies say the situation was just so dangerous they didn't even want to walk on the property. 46 neighboring homes were evacuated during the operation. the explosives were discovered when authorities responded to a blast at this home that injured the man living there.

it may take days before the identity of a person found badly burned in the oakland hills is known. noelle walker tells us that body was discovered last night near the entrance of the national park. >> the road leads straight to the winding trails of redwood regional park. it springs to life on a warm sunny day. >> lots of people, lots of dogs. >> reporter: the serenity of the wide open space is a stark contrast. >> i saw a lot of police cars out here. >> reporter: so what brought police out here on a thick fog last night. >> as they described it a badly burned body. >> reporter: a burning body in a parking lot and few clues except a victim is believed to be a woman. police call the death suspicious. >> it's one of the worse.

after another vehicle hit their car. her husband was driving right behind her and watched the vehicle burst into flames. he suffered burns to his hand. the 49-year-old driver of that mini van was injured. the death of three young people in anti government demonstrations in caracas drew neighbors of the area to the streets today. they called for liberty in venezuela. locally venezuelans say they want people to denounce the recent violence in that country. last wednesday, three students were killed at least two were shot by gunmen following what had been a peaceful rally. in san francisco, demonstrators said the killing was carried out by government forces. >> the venezuelan media have

the search for two missing skiers in colorado ended when their bodies were discovered. the two were caught in an avalanche in lake county. record snowfall has created unstable conditions. yesterday's avalanche is the latest in a string of deadly snow slides. just last week six people were killed two each in colorado.

utah and oregon. there are reports of a stunning jailhouse interview from a young pennsylvania mother accused of killing a man she met on craigslist. she is now quoted as saying she has killed many times before. according to the daily item newspaper, 19-year-old miranda barber confessed that she and her husband killed the 42-year- old man last november and she says she's killed at least 22 other people in a number of states including california. she reportedly said the killings started after she became involved in a satanic cult at the age of 13. according to the paper, barber said of the victims quote, i can pinpoint on a map where you can find them when i hit 22 i stopped counting. president obama used some harsh words today as he condemned new actions in uganda to criminalize gays. the african country is poised to punish some homo sexual acts with as much as a life prison.

america is one of the largest donors of foreign aid to uganda. in south africa, a rescue operation came to an end after 19 miners refused to leave worried about arrest. the miners who were brought up earlier were arrested. some of free miners said a rival group dropped boulders to trap them. they were rescued after officers heard their yells for help. a traffic nightmare along the 405 freeway has so far turned out to be much to do about something. crews are putting down new concrete about 6 miles of the freeway. the construction project was expected to cause so much traffic locals starts to refer

report on. enough to generate wet roadways. as far as the saturday system we can't call it a storm but just a cloud producer and light shower producer. you see ken field picked up .21 and a few hadn't one of an inch for -- and a few .1 of an inch for napa and san francisco. if you can see the wide doppler sweeps trying to detect some rainfalls. just a few high clouds out there paying us a visit. the fog will continue to develop in parts of north bay and the inland valleys. watch out for a drop off visibility. a few patches. we do have some development up here and we are tracking a system that could produce once again a few sprinkles. a few light showers and that will be by midweek. current temperatures cooler than last time this time. right now we're talking about mid-40s in santa rosa, napa.
