of the two officer whose were killed in the crash near fresno. officers brian law and juan gonzalez were responding to a traffic collision on highway 99 just before 6:00 a.m. as they approached the scene the california highway patrol said juan gonzalez swerved to avoid one of the people involved in the initial crash on the road. the officer's cruisers slammed into a guard rail killing both men on impact. >> they were classmates together. attended 27 weeks of training together. became good friends. >> officer juan gonzalez was just 33 years old and was not married. officer brian law was 34. he is survived by his wife and three children. and both men had ties to the bay area. ktvu's claudine wong is live where officer brian law began his law enforcement career. >> reporter: there are 90 officers here in this office

and most of them did know officer brian law, even though he was based in fresno he started his career at this office. he was an officer, husband and father and to the chp family he was their brother. >> reporter: he remembers beating brian law. he was out of the academy, the new guy and brian law welcomed him. >> he was one of the first people i met. he was on the same shift i was on. he was a great guy. always there to help you out. even as the new guy. he would help you out. >> reporter: he says brian law was just that kind of guy. warm and easy going. brian law graduated in 2008 and worked that office for 5 years before transferring to fresno. >> family man and he wanted to be closer to his family. that was why he left.

>> reporter: law was working with juan gonzalez a classmate on the grave yard shift when the accident happened. and while it may have happened miles away this hits home in oakland. >> loss to lose an officer. harder when it is someone you know, someone who is your friend. really hard. this is a wake up call and you have to remember every day we go to work we don't know if we will make it home. >> reporter: they want thupublic to -- the public to remember their service and they are asking the public to remember their loved ones and the families of the two officer whose are now forced to face the future without them. live, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> officer juan gonzalez got his start with the chp in the south bay. there are many officers at that office who knew him personally. many came into the office and put a black band across their

badges. he graduated in 2008. juan gonzalez wanted to go home to the fresno area so he jumped at the chance to transfer. officer ross lee worked with juan gonzalez in the south bay and says he looked up to him as a mentor. >> remember him walking around, you know, smile, funny guy. you know, seemed to be always smiling and jovial. it is sad. tragic. >> others described officer juan gonzalez as helpful, knowledgeable and they say he always hepthis composure in any situation he was in. governor jerry brown released a statement on the passing saying we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and call leagues as they mourn -- colleagues as they mourn their losses. we join all californians in honoring these officers for

contra costa county has a storage of water supply banked in bakersfield. ktvu's robert handa explains why it can't get the water it owns. >> reporter: we are at the water treatment plant, it will get a lot of attention during this because banked water relates to drinking water. >> reporter: they stopped releasing water to creeks in with conservation move that impacts wildlife and people. what scares her is if the drought impacts the drinking water supply. >> our every day life. that is how we survive. >> that concerns the water district as well. why they said they have reserves options to supplement the supply are drying up as reservoirs dwindle they acknowledge they have 263,000-

acre feet banked in concern county -- cencounty -- kern can'ty but they can't get the -- county but they can't get the water they own, they said it is too costly. so they need to find an agency to exchange water with but the drought and cut backs made that almost impossible. >> when the water product -- project is at zero there is less water. >> reporter: the water is needed for the water treatment plans to keep from drowning the reserves. >> we are making sure if there are reductions in treated water we can still meet the drinking water needs. >> it is strange and scary statement. not to have water -- at the same time not to have water.

called them and conexcessed to murdering fer-- confessed to murdering her. >> reporter: they gathered more evidence for a murder investigation. >> i haven't processed it all the way. it is like okay. you don't expect that. >> reporter: police say the 53- year-old called them yesterday afternoon and told them over the phone she killed her mother and wanted to turn herself in. detectives would not say how or when the mother was killed but neighbors say they had been living here for three to four years, they noticed the home had fallen into disrepair. neighbors said they weren't surprised. >> yelling. you hear the noise. you know, i didn't witness violence but you would hear,

you know, yelling. usually see her in a wheelchair. >> reporter: neighbors called police in the past to report disturbances at the home and the daughter was known to act strangely from time to time. >> used to be a -- used to be a deck over there. one time in the morning she was tearing it apart. bizarre. >> reporter: she was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder. the contra costa county curerner's office is closed today so we don't know when a autopsy will be performed but she is held in contra costa county jail on $1 million bail. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. new information about a burning body that was discovered near the entrance to a park over the weekend. flowers marked the spot where the body was found burning. police tell us personal items helped investigators identify

the victim. they believe that she was a white woman in her late 40s and she was from the bay area. >> family haven't seen or heard from her so it is kind of matching up. >> they have to confirm the body's identity and the cause of death. it is being investigated as a homicide although police haven't ruled out suicide. a fire went to two alarms before firefighters brought it under control. it started before 11:00 a.m. this morning in an apartment. it took firefighters 30 minutes to get it under control. no one was hurt and no word on the cause. alameda county can hire few firefighters. a federal grant will pay for the hiring and training of 12 new firefighters. all part of the safer grant program that stands for

run. it started a as a fight yesterday between two groups of people. police say the victim was stabbed and then hit by a car that left the scene. two other men were also injured. no arrests have been made. child was hit by a car in san francisco today. the girl was crossing the street when she was struck. the driver stayed that scene. 19-year-old man who was shot outside the powell street station is expected to recover. he is improving. the shooting happened after 7:00 p.m. last night outside the westfield mall. investigators hope surveillance video will help lead theme the shooter. no -- them to the shooter. police are wearing body cameras to enhance body safety

1:20 a.m. saturday. they checked nearby apartment complexes and found nothing. then three hours later at 4:16 a.m. someone called to report a body lying along the tracks. >> we believe there were several other people with her at the time at 1:20 a.m. and we have not heard from them and we would like them to come forward. >> reporter: the family who gathered and wept at the scene say it is time for those friends to come forward and their father had this to say. >> i like to know what she make to you to put a bullet in her head at 16 years old, little girl. >> reporter: police are waiting for a autopsy to determine exactly how many times she was shot and to determine if she might have been saved if help was called earlier.
