bay area as we look at some of these commutes. the east shore freeway looks good. you're taking about ten minutes to get into san francisco with no major problems. also the morning commute is looking good if you are driving on northbound 880 past the coliseum. if you are driving from the altamont pass to 680 right now, it will probably be the best you will do 19 minutes. it's pretty much a straight shot from 580 grant line to 580 at 680. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you. we begin with breaking news from the east bay. right now crews are battling a fast moving fire until san leandro. it was first reported a short time ago at a two-story home near castro. ktvu alex savidge is heading to the scene and we'll have a live report in a few minutes. police are investigating a deadly shooting where a

homeowner says he fired his gun in self-defense. it happened in the east san jose foothills. police are still on the scene. janine de la vega is joining us live on the scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, brian. crime scene technicians are here on the scene. police here are investigating. they say this is where a man says someone tried to break into his home. he was just trying to defend himself and that is why he grabbed his gun. just before 8:00 last night they received phone calls that shots were fired. when officers arrived they say a man told them an intruder tried to enter his home and fired shots in his direction. that resident said he got his gun and shot in the direction of the intruder to defend himself. two suspects got into a vehicle and sped off. police were unable to locate the suspect or their vehicle but soon after a man was dropped off at a nearby hospital with at least one got

shot wound. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. police believe that man is connected to the break in on pine ridge. homicide detectives have been conducting interviews and collecting evidence to help with their investigation. the identity of the man who died is not being released yet. but again police have a lot to sort through to sort of piece this all together to make sure that the residents count really matches up with what happened and try top find out who you know the other man was with the other apparent intruder. we will stay here on the scene and try to give you updates as soon as possible. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. one oakland elementary school will be on lock down today due top security -- due to security concerns. it alerts parents to an unspecified threat against a student that has prompted extra security measures. the gates outside the school will be locked all day while the students are in class.

the school says it's taking several other steps to make sure the students are safe. the fbi is trying to track down a man they describe as a violent fugitive. kevin anthony briggs was seen in san francisco, berkeley, and oakland last week. authorities say he's a convicted felon and registered sex offender. he is wanted in connections to assault of a woman and impurse nation of a police officer. he has a tattoo on his chest and piercing on his bottom lip. construction site will be closed today as investigators search for answers in a very serious accident. two workers still fighting for their lives after falling from a scaffolding at a skyscraper under construction. it happened yesterday afternoon. one worker fell 40 feet, the other fell about 30 feet. investigators from the states workplace safety agency will be

there on the site today trying to determine the cause of the accident. happening today an oakland raiders fan will be honored for saving a woman's life after she jumped from the third level of the oakland coliseum last november. he is a marine corp veteran and among the zone people pleading with the woman not to jump when she plunged 45 feet from the upper deck. both of them hit the concrete hard and hospitalized. both are okay. ceremony to honor his actions will be held at 8:30 this morning. a woman is fighting for her life after being hit in a busy pacific heights neighborhood in san francisco. it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. this cement truck hit the woman while she was crossing the street. the driver tells police he never saw her. another driver saw the woman walk in front of the truck and yelled for the driver to stop. >> she was pinned under the

first wheel. >> the pedestrian was described as being an asian woman in her 90s with gray spikey hair wearing a blue flannel shirt, jeans, and clogs. she under went surgery and is in critical condition. the driver was not cited because the pedestrian was walking outside the crosswalk. an ac transit butt with passengers inside was caught in the middle of a deadly gun battle in oakland. it happened just after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. an argument between two passengers on board the bus escalated after they got out. they shot at each on the street with several bullets hitting the bus. one of the gunmens were killed, the other escaped. in sonoma county the chp is looking for someone who threw water bottles at the cars. it happened on highway 12th for the past week. so far there has been four reported cases. the latest was a school bus

that had its side mirror blown out yesterday. another driver we spoke to says it scared him when a water bottle flew at his car. >> i said what is that? i looked back and that is when i saw the pickup truck that was heading the other way. >> the chp says the water battles are traveling so fast and the cars are fast but the impact is similar to a fast pitch softball coming at you at 100 miles an hour. the dalai lama will meet with president obama. china has warned that if the president does not -- it would seriously damage ties between the two companies. the meeting between the president and the spiritual

leader. a girl scout selling cookies in san francisco came up with what some are calling a shrewd way to boost sales. on monday they set up a table in front of the green cross medical marijuana dispensary in the city's excelsior district. green cross posted a photo on their facebook site. she sold out of all of her cookies in 45 minutes. the girl scouts issued this response. the decision of the mom to allow her daughter to have a booth at this location is not intended to be an endorsement or statement of any kind. the story has generated major social media buzz. in the 12 hours we posted it, it has received more than 16,000 likes, 1600 comments and shared 5700 times. we want you to join the conversation just log on to our facebook page and tell us what you think about this very unique story.

a racial discrimination task force will meet again at san jose state university tonight to discuss how the university might make improvements following an alleged hate crime on campus. they held a meeting earlier this month. the room was packed. some students say the university is not doing enough to address student concerns. the two men who viciously beat giants fan bryan stow outside of dodgers stadium nearly three years ago have learned their fate. marvin norwood appeared in a los angeles courtroom yesterday when they pled guilty to a plea deal. judge sentenced sanchez to eight years in prison. norwood to four years. bryan stow's family spoke in court and told the two men they are getting off easy. >> because of your actions bryan can't go to the bathroom by himself. he can't shower by himself. he has to wear adult diapers

and i hate having to even say that outloud. but it shows the severity of what you did. >> the time you serve is insignificant compared to what bryan must endure. however the years you spend in prison is what you deserve. >> now with time served, norwood could actually be released in a matter of days. however, both men still face federal gun possession charges that could lead to more time behind bars. seattle sea hawks running back march chon lynch is scheduled to appear in a courtroom today in connection to his 2012 dui case. he was arrested in july of 2012 by a chp officer who says he was driving north on interstate 880 in oakland weaving in and out of lanes nearly hitting two cars. lynch will also receive two years of probation and have to

and minnesota. the wild weather is expected to continue throughout the weekend. 90 minutes ago the ukraine president announced early elections and promised a coalition government but despite a peace accord this morning, opposing politicians in parliament screamed at each other during a decision. however he is refusing to step down. civic protests began three months ago after he dumped an agreement with the european union for closer ties with russia. >> we want to be free. >> a video featuring ukrainian protestors has gone viral. it is part of the campaign to sway support. unfiltered images of war zones have circulated through essential media but there are some who are leery that biased sources of information will be perceived as absolute truth.

her home. she opened fire and when she ran out of bullets she grabbed a butchers knife and stabbed one of the victims as well. they are now looking for emergency medical technicians to repace the 24 emergency responders it fired earlier this week. rural metro ambulance says 13 paramedics and 11 emt's failed to take a required cpr course. others will work overtime to make up the shortage. rural metro has quote a solid record for emergency response and believes public safety needs will be met. >> provisions in the contract for overtime. make sure that people don't work too much over time. >> rural metro says some of the fired workers are now under state and county investigations and could face criminal charges. time 4:47. new video just into our newsroom of the breaking news we told you about at 4:30 this morning.

welcome back to ktvu channel 2 morning news. 4:53 is the time right now. a deadly intersection just yards from a popular farmers market in san rafael is about to get a new look. plans to construct a roundabout just north of the marin civic center has been given the green light. a 79-year-old man was killed after being hit by a van while

trying to cross that intersection. engineers say the plan is all about safety. >> it results in the traffic calming effect because vehicles have to slow down in advance of coming from any direction into the roundabout to negotiate through the roundabout itself. >> he says the roundabout will cost an estimated $1-1.5 million. crews could break grounds by winter. the project will take nine months to complete. it could be easier to fight a parking ticket in san francisco. a new app called fix is getting ready to launch in san francisco. it will gather evidence and submit the proper paper work. if the driver wins they pay the app company 25% of what the citation would have cost. if they lose, the app company doesn't charge them anything. it's only being launched in san francisco but creators hope to expand into 100 u.s. cities in a year and a half. time is 4:54. happening today st. anthony's

kitchen will mark a big milestone today. it will serve its 40 millionth meal. they have been serving the needy for years. today historic meal will be served by senator dianne feinstein. she has served st. anthony's 13th millionth meal during her first term of mayor. slaughter house under investigation. without going into specifics the u.s. agricultural department is accusing rancho feeding corporation of circumventing requirements. there are indications the slaughter house may have processed cattle without an inspector present to claim that one of the owners denies. meantime rancho is in the process of being sold to marin farms. the big power ball winner still hasn't come forward to

claimth $425 million prize. now the lucky ticket was sold at a gas station in milpitas. yesterday a lottery official presented the station with the check for $1 million for selling that winning ticket. it turns out the owner had just left on vacation before the winning ticket was amounged. now in the days leading up to wednesday's drawing, lottery officials say the company bought $10.3 million tickets. about $4 million were sold right here in the bay area. a portion of the lottery proceeds do come back to the community supporting education. lottery officials say that amounted to $1.2 billion last year or a little more than 1% of all of the public education funding in the state. the u.s. postal service is hoping the late steve jobs can help boost its bottom line. the washington post reports jobs is one of several people being honored with a commemorative stamp. it's still under development but the postal service hopes
