it. >> plus how our record breaking drought will soon hit milk lovers where it hurts. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning. we are outside san francisco a marijuana dispensary. because that is where girl scout decided to set up shop. she was very successful in selling cookies but some people don't think that is really the right spot for her. we will talk about that. a lot of conversation on facebook about that story this morning. it is friday, february 21st i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's talk weather and traffic. steve, i can see clearly now. >> yes, you can. yes, you can. we all will be today because skies are clear. not a cloud in the sky and temperatures look like they will start to warm up pretty fast. although a little chilly for some. lots of sunshine. mild to warm today. in fact above average on the

temps. over all it looks like this pattern holds into the weekend. changes next week. yes, we will get clouds but i'm not 100% sold we will some rain. san francisco will go to 64 degrees today. starting off 30s and 40s. sfo was 50. now 47 degrees. 45 half-moon bay. there is 38. but once we get cranked up here it looks good for sunshine and warm temps. i think statewide hardly see a cloud. sunshine and warm temps. 60s to -- [ laughter ] appreciate that. over to sal. >> steve, can i say something that needs to be said? >> of course? >> the rain is gone, i can see all obstacles in my way. [ laughter ] >> very good. let's take a look at the commute now as we look at the drive times. the drive time here has increased a little bit. if you look closely at the toll plaza, there is a stalled

vehicle at the 8 10:-- at the 880 off ramp. westbound traffic is backed up for a three or four minute delay. then you're ten minutes into the bridge. your total drive time is 15 minutes. san mateo bridge from the toll plaza area to foster city is about 11 minute drive time which is about normal if you drive it every day you know this. let's talk about a drive time here at the 580 westbound. as you drive on 580, this is where all the slow traffic is and the drive time here is inches up a little bit. it's about 30 minutes from grant line road to 680 as you can see right there. 6:02 let's go back to the desk. we are following developing news in san jose are police are investigating a fatal shooting. detectives say it started as a home break in. janine de la vega is joining us from san jose with what we are learning about the suspects. janine. >> reporter: homicide detectives are still trying to piece this together but my

police sources tell me they believe they know who is responsible for the break in at this home on pine ridge way. it appears the suspects targeted this house. it started just before 8:00 last night in east san jose. the man who lives there told them that an aintruder tried to enter his home and fired shots in his direction. that resident says he got his gun and then shot in that direction to defend himself. two suspects then got into a vehicle and sped off. soon after a man was dropped off at a nearby hospital with one gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead. police believe that man is one of the intruders from the break in on pine ridge. sources tell me officers were able to track down the other suspect at a home near capital and mclaughlin. he was injured from the shooting and taken to the hospital and is supposed to survive. homicide detectives have been connecting interviews and collecting evidence to help with their investigation. at this point we don't know the relationship between the man that lives here and the intruders and why this home was targeted. the identity of the man who

died is not being released. we will continue to update you on this story and try to get in touch with the homeowner to see what he has to say. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:03. new this morning the san leandro investigation goes on into an early morning house fire. this started shortly before 4:00 a.m. at an abandoned house. the flames were huge. the fire gutted that old victorian house. no one was hurt. investigators say the fire started in the attic but it's still not clear how it started. there are several other questions about this investigation. ktvu alex savidge is there. he will tell you more from the fire scene coming up in our next half hour. the investigation continues into the oakland shooting where passengers inside an ac transit bus were caught in the middle of a deadly gun battle. it happened near 78th and

bancroft avenues yesterday afternoon. two bus passengers started arguing. after they got off the bus they the bus. one of the gunmen was killed. the other escaped. time 16:04. you know it is girl scout cookie selling time and a 13- year-old bay area girl scout is proving she knows how and where to sell her cookies. tara moriarty is live to tell us how dozens of boxes of girl scout cookies were sold in less than an hour. >> reporter: this girl is definitely drumming up big sales and raising a couple eyebrows in the process. some say it is not safe to sell cookies in front of a medical marijuana shop. her mother points to the extra security measure. there is a camera here and also a guard when the little girl comes to set up shop. danielle sold her cookies in front of green crosses. she sold 117 boxes in two hours

in front of the medical marijuana store on mission street. that is 37 more boxes than she sold during the same time frame outside a grocery store the next day. her mom says she has her daughter set up the cookie stand at several spots around the city so she learn about different environments and earn cash too. the green cross readily agreed to the cookie stand saying it's no secret that cannabis is a powerful appetite stimulant. the girl scouts of colorado doesn't like the idea. it says it doesn't allow its scouts to sell cookies in front of marijuana shops or liquor stores but san franciscans seem to love it. our facebook page has generated more than 16,000 likes. as for thely call chapter of the girl scouts, they sent us a statement saying quote we have not attempted to list either permitted or prohibited locations and have relied on parents and volunteers to make wise decisions for their girls. they simply encourage troops to

welcome back. time is 6:12. downtown san francisco construction site will stay closed today after two workers fell off scaffolding yesterday at a skyscraper site and investigators want to know why. those two workers are still fighting for their lives this morning after falling 40 feet from the high-rise on mission and fremont street. investigators will be at the site today to determine the cause of that accident. officials the santa rosa plaza mall say they regret what

happened on monday involving the family of slain teenager andy lopez. after attending a rally for andy lopez, his family went to the mall food court to eat. that is when security guards ordered them to take off the protest shirts they wore to the rally. the press democrat reports andy lopez's mother was upset she only had underwear underneath her shirt. the mall's owner wrote a letter saying they are disappointed in the security guard's actions. apodi lopez was a 13-year-old boy that was shot and killed by a sheriffs deputy last october. that deputy says lopez was carrying an air soft bb gun that looked like a real assault rifle and that he refused orders to put it down. some san francisco court workers are upset with what they call the fashion police. union workers held a protest

over how a court dressed code is being enforced. they are not opposed to the dress code itself but the policy is not uniformly enforced and some employees are being singled out. >> we're not about to fight ourselves. we are fighting the harassment that has been given to employees about how they are particularly dressed. >> under the dress code, all employees must wear professional attire. court officials say they are simply enforcing a dress code that has been on the books since 1996. thousands of service workers at the university of california say they plan to go on strike. the union says food workers and custodians are the lowest paid in the system. the strike is planned for five days starting march 3rd unless a new contract is reached. san jose mayor chuck reid delivered his final state of the city speech last night and that 30 minute speech was broadcast live on the internet.

dinner bell. at the republic near los angeles the cost of a meal has an added 3% surcharge which the owner says helps pay for employees health insurance. it is something many customers say they are not happy about. >> we already pay a lot to begin with by eating at these establishments. >> under the affordable care act employees would be required to pay for their health insurance but this has nothing to do with obama care mandates. time is 6:16. people living in irvin, texas you came real close as having a dog as candidate for mayor. i'm serious. this is dillon westy. on tuesday his owner filed a petition on his behalf to have his name put on the may 5th ballot. he even has his own twitter page where he sounds off on local issues. >> he doesn't do a real good job of typing but you see he has real good tweets out there.

there are no major problems if you are driving on interstate 880. the traffic continues to move along very nicely and it has been a very nice drive the entire way. we are looking at 580 because this is one of the busiest commutes. 580 coming in from livermore to pleasanton and the traffic is going to be busy. there it is. and also on the altamont pass. the slowest traffic is on the altamont pass. that is where you will spend most of your time taking 30 minutes from grant line to 680 which is a lot less than yesterday. 6:18 let's go to steve. sal carl the fog is very popular on twitter. we have 30s and 40s to 50. it will be clear. it will be nice and sunny. temperatures above average today.

the problem i have with his is hints the jet stream might be split. some of it going toward southern california. today sunshine plenty. it will be mild to warm. high pressure will take us into the weekend. clouds increase tuesday. it could be very light rain on wednesday night. the stronger system wouldn't come in. maybe airbeds this time next week. we will see. but if the secret stream is split. that will take a lot of energy out. long way to go. we will get the smaller details to iron themselves out. san jose will go 43 to start. we will go for a high of 73 degrees. a few 30s. santa rosa is in there. low 40s. but a couple locations closer to 50 degrees. over all can't find a fog. 40 in ukiah. reno at 32 and 58 san diego and los angeles.

the high clouds from yesterday are long gone. so over all your forecast looks good. a little chilly in the morning. cold for some but lots of sunshine, mild to warm. temperatures will continue to hold all the way into sunday. it could be a little bit of fog forming coast as we get a little more of a westerly breeze. 60s and 70s. antioch, brentwood, oakley. shout out for oakley there. fairfield 70. san rafael 70. morgan hill low 70s. santa cruz beautiful day there. 70 in redwood city. san jose as well. it looks good. i don't see much change going into the weekend expect for a little patchy fog. mostly sunny. increasing clouds tuesday. in less than an hour we will get at january report on existing home sales. that announcement from the national association of realtors is not expected to be good news. they believe sales are down 4%. they blame the bad weather back east which keeps people from home shopping.

but they also say things could look better as we get into spring when the weather approves. porshe is issuing a warning for owners of all of its new gt3s. there have been fires. so far there are no crashes or injuries reported but porshe wants to find the cause. the recall only effects 408 of the cars in the u.s.. time is 6:21. new honors that will immortalize steve jobs. the special honor next year for the legendary apple cofounder that will put him along johnny carson. >> new security measures at oracle arena.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's 6:24. later today california's department of health will update the state's ongoing battle against measles. the measles scare began here in the bay area earlier this month when a cal student tested positive. now that student road bart from the el cerrito station to the uc berkeley campus.

that prompted concerns people may have been exposed to this dangerous, highly contagious disease at both cal and on bart. however we checked with both uc berkeley and the county health department yesterday and they report no new cases of measles. the board of trustees at san francisco's city college may soon return to power. california lawmakers are considering legislation that would bar the state from taking power away from an elected school board. it comes in response to the growing dissatisfaction over the state's decision to take control of the university last year. since then the trustees have been mostly sidelined and one member resigned. time is 6:25. you warrior fans if you go to the next game, you will see tougher security there. last night the warriors implemented some new security measures. alameda sheriffs deputies now patrolling all the home games with bomb sniffing dogs. >> we are just here as a precautionary measure.

we do this for every raider game. we have done this for many years. so now the nba is in line with that and they want to make sure their fans are safe as well. >> this is all part of a growing trend of tighter security at sport events around the nation. stadiums that were major league baseball games are played they are also tightening security this season. the were yours won in overtime. and steve blake debuted with the warriors in the first quarter got a screen, hit a deep three pointer. now in the second quarter, the warriors up by five. steph curry a high pass to andre iguodala who faked once, got it back to curry and curry ended up with a great play. now the warriors led by four at the break. they eventually won in overtime. 102-99. thank you steph curry who had a last minute layup and they won. spring training has just begun but giants pitcher tim lincecum has already notched the first victory of the

season. it involves a lawsuit with a landlord at the final home. the landlord accused him of destroying and stealing property after he moved out in 2010. she was seeking $350,000 in damages. lincecum counter sued claiming the accusations were false. now they have agreed to a $100,000 settlement. time is 6:27. a huge fire destroyed an old victorian home in the east bay  early this morning. coming unthe many questions that still need to be answered in the investigation. we are live in north oakland where an elementary school taking a proactive approach to a campus threat. coming up we will tell you more on what that threat is and why access will be severely limited today. good morning. we are looking at drive times now and some of them have become more just a little bit more robust i should say. northbound 280 is one of them. >> looking like a great friday forecast. only if you like sunshine and mild to warm temps.

38, 39. most locations in the 40s to near 50. it is clear. it will be a beautiful day. already sun coming up and it will be sunny and mild to warm today. temperatures again big difference in some of the lows but the high temps will be in the 60s to near 70. severe clear is what we like to say. san francisco if you live there, work there, it will be nice as well. 40s for some. upper 30s for others. 47 sfo. on the mild side for a few. any clouds? no. there will be a little increase over the weekend. everything looks good for today and right into sunday. so a cool morning and nice. it will be a nice day. highs in the 60s to a few low 70s. here is sal. steve, good morning. we are looking at a commute that is not that bad. the drive times are less than they have been in some of the other days of the week here. let's take a look at westbound 24. for example, just a little bit less here between the walnut creek interchange and the

tunnel of about an eight minute drive. sometimes it's 10 or 12 but this morning it's a little less. bay bridge toll plaza the same thing goes. there is a back up of about ten minutes and then another ten on to the bridge. so we are looking at just under 20 minute drive time across the bay into the city. the traffic on 680 i'm sorry on westbound 24 on westbound 80 looks pretty good as you drive to orinda. as i mentioned 80 is dramatically better. let's go back to the desk. sal, thank you. new information about an early morning house fire in san leandro. fire crews found these huge flames leaping from the home when they arrived. this started just before 4:00 a.m. at the house of alvarado and castro streets. alex savidge is joining us live from the scene. those flames were huge. >> reporter: they were huge when this fire was rolling. the flames have since been knocked down. and now take a look at the scene.

it is about a block up from where we were. a few alameda county fire crews still out here trying to make sure all of the hot spots are up in the attic area. take a look again at the video here. this is what this fire looked like when it started just before 4:00 this morning. no one was hurt here including any firefighters and the home itself is vacant according to the fire department. it's right at the corner of castro and alvarado streets. about 30 firefighters were called in here to battle the flames. battalion chief tells me the fire was burning mainly in the attic of the home. flames were pouring out of the place for a half hour or so. the power was shut off in the home but there was a live power line leading to the home. >> we had a hazard here in front of the house because the line looked like it was getting ready to fall so pg&e came and secured that line for us to

eliminate threat. >> reporter: now at this point the exact cause of the fire remains unclear. there was no sign there was anyone living inside the home. transients or anything of that nature. it's believed the home has been vacant for six months. a fire investigator will be called in here to take a look at the evidence inside the home and get a better sense of how this fire started. live in san leandro alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. police in san jose are investigating its eighth homicide of the year. detectives say it started as a home break in. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us from san jose to tell us what she has learned about the suspects and the house. janine. >> reporter: neighbors tell me there have been problems surrounding this home. they say the shooting last night scared them and one of the neighbors told me they saw what they believed to be the getaway car speeding away. and now police say one of the men in it is now dead. police say this started just

before 8:00 last night at the home off of clayton and mount pleasant road. the man man who live there is told them an intruder tried to break into his home. that resident got the gun and shot at the man to defend himself. soon after that a man was dropped off at a nearby hospital with one gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead. police believe that man is one of the intruders. police sources tell me officers were able to track down the other suspect at a home. he was anywhered from the shooting and taken to the hospital. sources say this doesn't appear to be a random shooting. they say the initial home break in was targeted. homicide detectives have been conducting interviews and collecting evidence to piece this together. the identity of the man who died is not being released yet but we will continue to update this story as we learn new information. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:35.

a school is taking a preemptive approach to a campus threat. the school notified parents. they plan to lock down the campus for the day. brian flores is joining us live to tell us about other safety precautions that school will take. >> reporter: good morning. yeah. proactive indeed for the school here. a memo was sent out to parents notifying them of the move today. you can see the gates are closed here. once students a i rife the -- ktvu obtained a memo that was sent out to parents yesterday. here are some of the details from that memo. the gates will be locked throughout the day. the 63rd street door will be locked as well. the gates will reopen from 2:45 to 3:00 p.m..

there will also be a police presence or security guard will be on site throughout the day as well. now in terms of the threat itself, the memo to the parents found it was directed to one of the families and a youngster. school district officials who we also contacted confirm the memo was found out. wac back out here live again they are remain on a cautionary lock down. but if the threat continues or perceive anymore danger, they will notify parents appropriately. the fbi trying to track down the man they describe as a violent fugitive. kevin was seen in berkeley. he is a convicted felon and

registered sex offender. happening today oakland raiders fan will be honored for saving a woman's life after she jumped from the third level of the oakland coliseum last november. 61-year-old donny of stockton is a marine core veteran and among them pleading with the woman not to jump. when she plunged she stood underneath and ended up breaking her fall. both of them hit the concrete hard and sent to the hospital. the ceremony to honor his actions will be held at 8:30 this morning. the two men that beat bryan stow outside of dodgers stadium nearly three years ago have learned their fate. they appeared in a los angeles courtroom yesterday where they pled guilty as part of a plea deal. the judge sentenced sanchez to eight years in prison.

norwood to four years. the two men also came face to face with bryan stow's family in the courtroom. the family members tell sanchez and norwood they are getting off easy. >> because of your actions, bryan can't go to the bathroom by himself. he can't shower by himself. he has to wear adult diapers. and i hate having to say that outloud but it shows the severity of what you did. >> the time you serve is insignificant to what bryan husband endure -- bryan must endure. >> as time served, norwood could be released in a matter of days. however both men face federal gun possession charges that could lead to more time behind bars. time is 6:39. the dalai lama is coming here to the bay area this weekend

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. a girl scout has gained national attention for selling girl scout cookies and a lot of them but right in front of a pot club in san francisco. i understand you just talked to the girl's family. >> yes. we spoke to the mother by phone this morning. and she did not want to do an interview on television but she did tell us that hey look i'm a straight laced mother. i never even tried marijuana. she's allowed her to set up her booths everywhere in the city. and this cannabis club is one of them. this is a picture taken from green cross' facebook page. the 13-year-old sold 117 boxes in two hours in front of the medical marijuana store on mission. that is 37 more boxes than she sold during the time frame

and so are the cars it's like having a fast pitch softball coming at you at 100 miles an hour. the chp is searching for a mid 2,000 white pickup truck. they think it may be responsible for the crimes. will is a new development in the ukraine crisis. a half an hour ago the embattled president signed a tentative peace deal. protests in the streets of kia much calmer. there are reports of minor scuffles but no blood shed. the deal was brokered by european mediators while details of the agreement have not been released. ukraine's president this morning announced he will hold early elections and is promising a coalition government. at least 77 people have been killed in fighting since tuesday. time is 6:47. the u.s. postal service hoping the late steve jobs can help boost its bottom line. the washington post reports that steve jobs is one of several people honored with

time is 6:55. the chp and the state department of justice are all investigating a mass shooting yesterday at a triable headquarters in rural north eastern california during an eviction hearing. it happened in modot county inside the cedarville office. investigators arrested a former indian chairwoman. saying she killed four people during a triable hearing and critically injured two others. the suspect and her 24-year-old son were being evicted from their home on triable land. investigators say she started shooting, opening fire, when she ran out of bullets she grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed one of the victims. more developments are coming now regarding a petaluma
