napa. temperatures a little cool. some of that fog again. i think this will play into our forecast. system will be getting closer. that will ramp up a little bit. another beautiful day. sunny and warm. patchy morning fog. temperatures copping out today. we'll start a cool down tomorrow. here is sal. people are up already. this is a look at the bay bridge. this is now a 15-20 minute commute. it's getting higher and higher. 15-20 is your drive time. no major problems if you are driving on the approach. this is a look at 880 north and southbound. still less than five minutes from downtown oakland to the airport. if you are trying to catch a flight. 580 has been somewhat troubled

coming into the valley. coming in from the altamont pass. 205 is also slow. we've had a lot of slow traffic in this area. we've had just a couple fender benders. we had an earlier gravel spill. so 580 now 49 minutes already from grant line to 680. high street 25. highway 4 and 680 drive times pretty good. bart as normal no delays. nothing to do with that derailment. everything is back on time. let's go back to the desk. we have developing news from berkeley where firefighters are grieving the loss of one of their own. tara moriarty is at the fire house this morning with more on the accident that killed a 55- year-old firefighter and more on his family history. >> reporter: family and friends are definitely grieving right now. and facebook condolences have been pouring in. i want to read one of them to you. it says you are a greet man who

lived a worthy life. still trying to get over the shock. you can see here at the station where tony worked that the flag is at half staff. that will be the case in many stations. nunes was killed in a tractor accident last night at his family's ranch. a procession of firefighters and other emergency crews escorted his body to a coroner's office. the 55-year-old was killed while driving his tractor. it slid 200 feet down a canyon and rolled pinning him underneath. he was working on a dirt road to prepare for this week's rainstorm. firefighters poured into the coroner's office last night grief stricken. nunes worked for berkeley fire but his father and three brothers all worked for the contra corsica county fire department. his father and brother larry were battalion chiefs. his brother ed works as a

reserve. and his brother john was a captain who died suddenly of job related canister 2009. nunes's friends tell us he was extremely well liked and a cowboy at heart. when everybody wakes up here, we hope we can speak to them. time is 6:02. meantime police officers from all over the bay area they are heading to fresno to go to the memorial service for two chp officers killed in the line of duty. janine de la vega is joining us live from the chp office in san jose. there is a special connection there. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. right now you are looking at live pictures of those chp officers who are loading up in their vehicles. they came in about an hour ago. they have been shining their shoes and getting their uniforms on. making sure they look their best when they head to fresno to pay their respects.

gonzalez and law were killed in a crash on highway 99. they were responding to a traffic accident and hit a guardrail while trying to avoid the vehicles involved in that crash. after graduating the academy together -- governor jerry brown will be among the thousands of people attending today's service which begins at 10:00 a.m.. officers say it will be a difficult day for them. >> we all go out every day realizing that might be something we have to do. we do everything we can to try to avoid that from happening. when it does happen we gather together to honor them, to remind ourselves that is a possibility that we need to be as careful as we possibly can be. >> reporter: a group of about 15-20 officers from san jose will be driving down in their patrol cars with fresno to attend the service. some didn't know gonzalez but still want to pay their respects. the service begins in a couple

hours at the save mart center where we are told officers from many other law enforcement agencies are also expected to attend. and again they are going to leave very soon now. again a lot of them about to get in their cars and head down to fresno. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. police in fairfield are investigating a deadly crash that appears to have occurred during a street race. it happened last night at lopes road and canyon hills drive. investigators say two cars were moving at high speeds when they collided at the intersection. witnesses say it was an innocent bystander who was killed in that crash. >> i hear from the witnesses is is they were speeding. two of the cars were speeding and this gentleman who is deceased he was just driving down the road. had no idea this was coming. >> police say one of the

suspected rappers were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. the other driver sped away. time is 6:05. police are searching for three men that forced their way into a house, taped a boy and his grandmother and robbed them. it happened around 3:15 yesterday afternoon. police say after the men left, the boy managed to escape and ran to the neighbors house. that neighbor happened to be state senator mark desoni. >> he was in a state of shock when i was talking to him. he started to calm down once the police got here. when i came out he was obviously very upset. >> the three suspects described as latino between the ages of 19 and 30. one had a short buzz cut with a birthmark above his upper lip. two had handguns. police are still searching and still trying to figure out what was stolen from that home.

this morning fremont police are investigating a crash between an amtrak train and a car. that happened last night. when firefighters arrived they found an overturned vehicle next to the tracks. there were two people inside. one was unconscious. both people were taken to the hospital but so far there is no update on their condition. bart is back on track with trains running on schedule during this monday morning commute. but that is after a train derailment that disrupted service for -- empty train flew off the cracks. bart workers spent most of the weekend. >> our possessing is -- we know it's a big inconvenience far lot of people. but break downs are inevitable.

if you drive a car it will break down sometime. if parts -- it make take several weeks before investigators determine exactly what went wrong. time 6:07. the power is back on for thousands of customers. the outage started around 10:00 last night. more than 6600 customers were effected. a vote scheduled on the plan to ban plastic water bottles on public property in san francisco. a ban would hurt the nonprofit organizers of events that make money by selling water in plastic bottles. so the deadline for them has been changed until 2018. still others are worried there

is just not enough alternatives like water fountains and water refilling stations. supporters say banning plastic bottles would be better for the environment. girl scout from arizona and her mother are following in the footsteps of a girl in the bay area. she got the idea after seeing the story about the girl in san francisco. she says her daughter wants to sell big and only has one more week to do it. >> well my top goal is maybe 600 or 700. >> it takes a lot of time. if i can move twice as many in the same amount of time. >> it paid off. the owner of the medical marijuana dispensary decided to buy a box of cookies for each of its customers over the weekend. meantime the bay area scout was invited back over the weekend but decided to decline. she set up shop on president's day and sold 117 boxes in two hours. the california girl scout 51s

incredible. a bird smashing through the windshield of this small plane. look at it again. this is unbelievable. the pilot caught this on his dash board camera. somehow he kept his cool and quickly was able to land the plane. weber only suffered minor cut on his fore head. the pilot of a replica world war i plane was hurt after the plane flipped over. take a look at this photo. this son twitter. the firefighters who responded took this photo.

the pilot had been doing what is called high speed taxiing. that is a step in certifying a plane for flight. that german biplane was only damaged slightly. the united states' army might be downsizing in order to reduce defense spending. defense secretary chuck hagel will propose the idea sometime today. if congress approves his plan, it would reduce the size of the army to its smallest size since before world war ii. some military officials worry the cuts could be dangerous for the remaining troops. president obama meets with governors of both parties and western states about the droughts and wild fires. last night the governors were welcomed by president obama and the first lady. the president told them that this is a year of action and he needs their help to move america forward. >> our partnership on behalf of the american people, on issues ranging from education to health care to climate change

run deep. deeper than what usually hits the front page. >> governor jerry brown is not at that governor's conference. he said he had to stay here in california to work on the drought problem. he did meet with president obama last week in fresno about the water crisis. the family of a san lorenzo man shot and killed by sheriffs deputies. david was killed one week ago. the sheriffs department says officers were forced to open fire after he came after them with a baseball bat. but family members say the deputies created a lethal confrontation with an emotionally impaired man. >> they break the door down, they rush in and within moments they fired over 13 shots. hitting him numerous times. >> i've been married 40 years. gave me three beautiful boys.

and grand kids. he is a good man. he didn't deserve to die. >> it's still not clear happen legal action if any the family plans to take against the sheriffs department. time is 6:15. silicon valley investor tim draper holds a news conference today about an initiative known as six californians. this would split california into six individual states. draper is known for investing in companies like skype and hot mail. and says in the current form california is too big to be governed efficiently. he needs to get about 808,000 signatures before the middle of july in order to get this measure on the november ballot and get a debate going. >> it should be an interesting thing. >> yeah. 6:16 is the time. sal, how is traffic and n your part of the state? >> yeah. traffic in silicon valley.

it's doing okay. it's getting a little slower as you drive to the bay bridge toll plaza. i want to mentioning the metering lights came on and there is a backup of 25 minutes getting into san francisco. so that is your drive time. 25 or a little less. this is a look at interstate 880 in oakland. you can tell more people around the road. no major problems from the coliseum up to downtown. i want to take a look at traffic times. 580 it is more than an hour. we had a lot of accidents on that stretch. the crashes are clear but traffic is not doing well. 580 from high street to 24 is only five minutes. so that is a dramatic difference. highway 4 six and 680, 25 minutes. this is a look at bart a lot of people wondering if bart is back on service. yes, they are.

first responders had to be taken to the hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a mall. restaurant manager who was working there lost his life because of carbon monoxide poisoning. now on sunday more than 20 people at a hotel in maine had to be taken to the hospital for that same treatment. >> carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer. it's colorless, it's tasteless, and it's odor less. >> earlier this month carbon monoxide leak at a hotel in baltimore sent nine people to the hospital. and last near three people died two months apart in the same north carolina motel room. in may of 2010 state officials signed a law requiring all california homes with equipped with carbon monoxide alarms. the alarms have to be installed outside the homes sleeping areas. homes with sleeping areas on

innocent driver he was simply trying to make a left turn here on to this street when he was t- boned by a speeding car involved in that race. the man that was killed had nothing to do with that race. this happened just after 5:00 last night here at the intersection of lopes road and canyon hills drive. the innocent driver behind the wheel of a black mazda sedan died here at the scene. witnesses saw that infinity racing a black toyota pickup truck just before the crash happened. one neighbor says she and several other people tried to save the life of the man in that mazda who was caught in the middle of a dangerous drag race. >> i ran over and tried to assist in helping him make sure he was staying with us. at the point he did have a pulse when we were there and i was holding his hand and checking his pulse.

i told the other gentleman that we were losing him. >> reporter: the man who was killed last night has not been identified by authorities. the man who was driving that infinity coup one of the two racers suffered life threatening injuries. police say they are now looking for the second driver involved in the race. that is the person who was driving a black late model toyota tundra pickup truck. that driver simply took off after last night's crash. live in fairfield alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:36. a memorial service will be held tonight far uc berkeley football player who died during a team work out. a public memorial comes after family, friends, and teammates attended services over the weekend in bakersfield. the 21-year-old defensive lineman planned to go to medical school. school officials say he collapsed during a workout earlier this month.

the cause of his death still has not been released. meantime a stanford university grad made pro sports history last night. right there. jason collins became the first openingly gay athlete to play in a major pro sport game. the 35-year-old nba center played for the brooklyn nets against the lakers. collins has been in the nba for the past 12 years but last night it was his first game since he came out at the end of last season. >> need to be a solid basketball player. again it's about focusing on the task at hand and not thinking about history. >> collins didn't score any points last night but he did have two rebounds in 12 minutes of play. bay area fans remember collins. he played college basketball with his twin brother during stanford's run to the financial four back in 1998. just in time for the busy

monday morning commute. bart workers were able to clear that train that derailed over the weekend. ktvu channel 2 reporter brian flores is joining us from the mccarthur bart station. brian. >> reporter: the reaction we have gotten from many bart riders a sense of relief. but also a sense of trepidation and nervousness because they don't know about the reliability of the system. but the good news is the fact that all the trains are running normally. this after crews worked hard to -- they also fixed the tracks near the concord bart station where it happened. but yesterday is whenth pittsburgh bay point line came fully back in service. we spoke with bart riders about whether they trust the transportation system despite yet another inconvenience. >> i don't really trust bart. well i pray. and i watch my surroundings.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. police officers from all over the bay area are heading to fresno this morning to attend the memorial service for two chp officers killed in the line of duty. janine de la vega is joining us now from chp office in san jose where there is a special connection there. >> reporter: yes, there is. about 15-20 officers left about 15 minutes ago. they are headed to fresno to pay their respects to their two fallen brothers. one of them used to work here. here's video we took a little while ago. you can see several cars leafing the office. they spent the morning shining their shoes and making sure they look their best for this memorial service for 33-year- old juan gonzalez. both were killed last monday in a crash on highway 99 in fresno

enforcement agencies are also expected to attend as well as some agencies from out of state. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:45. new this morning a warrant has been issued for the arrest of ukraine's president. president victor yanukovych has fled the capitol. they want him arrested for the mass killing of civilians. over the weekend ukraine's parliament named the speaker as the head of state. he has promised a new interim government by tomorrow and new elections in may. meantime thousands of ukrainians are getting a look inside the extravagant palace where the president used to live. there is a huge collection of cars and the furnishings are luxurious. the parliament voted to return that property to the state. >> for me it's madness. and for all people the only question i am hearing over here

san francisco animal control officers are testing 35 meat balls found over the weekend. they want to know if they contain rat poisoning. now police say a similar incident in that same area last year killed a dog. police say they never found the person responsible. police officers have placed more than 50 signs out there warning pet owners be very careful. >> that is scary. 6:49 is the time. back over to sal. as we get closer to 7:00. how is the commute? >> it's doing okay. it's one of those commutes that you are likely to see on a monday though. let's take a look at the toll plaza. it has been backed up for a 25- 30 minute delay. which is typical. unless you are using the car pool lane. we are also looking at the commute here on westbound 24 between walnut creek and oakland.

it's taking about 10-12 minutes. not all that bad. nothing unusual. this is westbound 80 as you drive through contra costa county. it's already slow from highway 4 as you drive into richmond and highway 4 itself is slow. pittsburg looking at a crash and traffic is slow through castro valley. bart, cal train, and muni no delays. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. and a very good morning. a little bit of fog has come back. very low. i mean it's shallow. it's right down there. most of it is confined to the santa crust coast. doesn't show up really here but i will get a closer look at it coming up. a lot of high clouds to the north but today is another mild pattern. a little cooler by the coast. there is a little bit more yesterday morning than this morning. still rain returns wednesday afternoon evening. not a whopper of the system.

projections not anything that is too ridiculous. i mean yes we need the rain but an inch and a half to 2.5. that is through sunday morning. yes it's okay rain but that is nothing compared to what the north bay had. 30s for some. novato is in there. napa. a lot of 40s here. it shows up here. it doesn't all show up which is near san francisco. we are waiting for this system to come in. it will work its way in tuesday. that will pick up the fog and we will see cooler conditions. 39 ukiah. 33 monterey. up and over everything goes. for now high pressure will get nudged along. that will be tomorrow. that will hopefully open the door for a system on wednesday night. it sure looks like it. timing is a little tough. patchy fog for a few.
