12:13 pm
12:14 pm
12:15 pm
want to go back to our breaking news in san francisco. once again, live pictures of a large, tall plume of black smoke. this is now a three-alarm fire that is burning at upton and mckinnon in san francisco. it's an industrial area of san francisco in the bayview district and this fire has been burning for about 20 minutes or so. we're not sure exactly what is
12:16 pm
burning at this point but we do have a crew on the way and right now, we have ktvu's tara moriarty on the phone with us right now. tara, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, i'm actually driving through the streets right now, sort of trying to get away from the fire. it's absolutely enormous. the billowing cloud of black smoke can be seen for miles. i actually spotted it on my way 101 southbound, and when i got a little close to the fire, i don't know if you have that video yet, i shot some video off my cell phone. but there were threes loud crackling noises. there's something very combustible in the warehouse. this is sort of like an industrial area. we're near mckinnon. i can't get a cross because, again, i'm driving but there is a lot of people that are being told to leave the area, a lot of fire crews here on scene. they were actually pulling up after i arrived. so they keep sending more and more. i haven't had a chance to talk
12:17 pm
with an official. a couple of police are cordoning off certain streets because they need to drag the hose lines, connect to the fire hydrants. so people are being told to stay out of the area. this one is coming in. it's really ripping. it's very black smoke that you can see. a lot of flames and it appears that they are attacking this fire from all ends, from all -- from all parts of the block here. but people in the neighborhood are a bit freaked out, i have to say because the popping noises that you can hear from the fire are so intense, it was quite scary. everybody kind of going in all at once to take pictures off their cell phone cameras backed off once they heard the loud booms. >> that certainly is probably the best idea, to try to stay away. so i'm looking at the map here, tara, on my computer and we're again looking at a live picture of this large black plume of
12:18 pm
smoke. it looks like this is between 101 and 280 but you say it's a pretty industrial area. i'm sure it's visible from the freeway. >> reporter: yes, it is. i was driving home. just got off my shift and -- i'm -- i had gotten off the freeway to check it out and as i pulled up -- actually, there's still fire crews arriving on scene, and a lot of people who live in the area and who work in this area are leaving right now. they are being told to get out. they don't know what was burning. but some firefighters did mention there was some sort of a taxicab company located where the fire is as well as some sort of academy, academy of sciences or something like that that they were mentioning, academy of arts, some sort of school. so i will try to get more information. i do have a police officer here
12:19 pm
on scene and he's telling me to leave right now. as you can imagine, it's a very chaotic scene. i can see an ambulance and several police officers and they are really blocking off a lot of -- a lot of blocks are -- they are telling people to vecket and and -- to evacuate and get out of here. it's that dark, smack smoke, which suggests some sort of plastic or rubber, something like that, is burning. i can't smell it from where i am but i can definitely see it. >> all right. we'll let you go to try to gather information for us, tara, and see what you can find out to find out where this is bumping. but black smoke would indicate it's still actively bumping at
12:20 pm
this point and with a huge response, a lot of firefighters and police gathering on the scene to try to put this fire out. but tara saying this fire is really going. it's at least three alarms by this point. this is new video -- i'm just pausing so we can listen a little bit. you can hear some of that crackling noise that tara was telling us about. i believe this is video that tara sent to us just a short time ago. you can see how black the smoke is and just billowing up from the scene. it looks like a large fire. what was interesting, tara, she like a lot of people were running toward the fire to try to see what's going on. when a lot of people heard the crackling noise and it sounded like a possible explosion, a lot of people turned around and tried to run away from it and that's exactly what people are being advised to do, leave the area. a very large response. we saw some of the fire trucks
12:21 pm
pulling up there and arriving at the scene. again, we understand this is at upton street and mckinnon avenue in the bayview district of san francisco. the google map says there's a national cab nearby, a traffic supply company, a metal -- a metal products company. so again, rather an industrial area, quite a few businesses that could potentially have some dangerous items if they were to go up in flames. so we are again gathering more information and -- this -- okay. this is from newschopper2 that is flying to the scene right now. this is stillaways a way but you can still -- this is still aways away but you can still see it. not sure if rosemary can join us and tell us about the winds. >> the winds are generally
12:22 pm
light which from this point looks good because it looks like the winds or the smoke going straight up, not blowing over lower levels of the city or that area. but as you get up higher, you can see there may be a weakened version in place. that's why -- it looks like 2,000 feet, 3,000 feet up. it looks like we see it flatten out and move. so the wind carrying it a little bit. but overall, it looks like a variable wind, a light wind which from this point looks actually like it's a positive thing because we don't have that smoke blowing over the lower levels of where people are living, tori. >> all right. and we have a message into the bay area air quality district to find out what exactly this is gonna do for air quality in the bay area. but as rosemary said, light wind at this point.

12:26 pm
david stevenson has more. >> reporter: you can see the smoke billowing out from the site of an auto body shop in the bayview district. it went from a two-alarm to a three-alarm fire. that means there are more than 100 firefighters on the scene. there are a lot of industrial warehouses in the area. some of them in the immediate area have been convicted but there are -- evacuated. we were driving 15 miles away and we could see the smoke billowing almost like a volcano, plumes of black smoke. the fire department has said this is being called a defensive fire, meaning rather than trying to put it out, it's a dangerous situation, they are trying to to it from the
12:27 pm
outside. we heard presumably flammable material. you can see a firefighter perched high above the fire on a ladder. we're not seeing any flames. again, all of this smoke pillowing out. there are people -- bim lowing out -- billowing out. there are people told to evacuate and take care. again, a very active scene right now, tori. we'll be going around trying to catch up with the fire department trying to see if there's been any injuries. thus far we don't know of any. you can see them putting water on that from above, from a distance trying to put out this auto body shop fire at this hour. for now, reporting live, tori, we'll head back to you and try to gather more information. >> all right. thank you. i was gonna ask about possible cause and injury. david is gonna try to work on that. great shot from newschopper2. you get a sense of just how large this building is. as david said, they are attacking it defensively trying
12:28 pm
to attack it from the outside. you can see the large plumes of smoke from the ladders. tara moriarty was on the scene. saw this driving by and joins us live by phone to let us know how people in the area are dealing with all of this situation. tara? >> reporter: yeah, you know, it appears that they are really getting the upper hand on the fire at this point. when i first arrived, this smoke was completely black and now it's white. that would indicate that they are making progress here and you can see them -- fresh my perspective, i think i'm standing on the back side of where david stevenson is. here's mark gonzalez with the fire department. >> okay. >> reporter: he's talking right now with some of the chiefs on scene to try to figure out what the status is of the fire. sounds like he's -- he's talking with the chief, actually, on the phone right now. he said it looked like everything is getting under control anyway.
12:29 pm
from where we're standing, we can see about two ladder trucks spraying water. there were some flames that i could see from my vantage point. right now, it's -- i can still see the flames. it appears that they are making progress. hold on one second here. i'm gonna talk to mark and find out exactly what's going on here. can you tell us about what's going on here? >> reporter: it looks like it's getting better -- it's an auto body shop? >> yes. crews are doing a good job. all members are okay. there's no information if anybody was in the shop. >> reporter: okay. thank you. that was mark gonzalez one of the deputy chiefs here at the
12:30 pm
fire. it's dissipated a little bit. when those explosions were going off, it was pretty intense. a lot of the people have gathered around to watch the fire and it went -- we're taking a step back and thinking, you know? this is not a safe situation for me to be in. back to you. >> tara moriarty there for us on the scene. getting direct word that mark gonzalez is getting better and as tara has been pointing out, you can see these pictures from live -- live pictures from newschopper2. they are getting a lot of water on the fire. so the smoke has turned from really dark black to kind of a lighter gray which indicates they are making progress. you can still see some smoke pouring out from every little outlet and the windows and what used to be the roof, obviously, no longer there. and we did hear from a couple of people, david stevenson and also the
