at an oakland apartment complex is the same complex where a woman was found dead just three weeks ago. now, police are looking into the possibility the two are connected. good evening. i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm heather holmes. oakland firefighters found the badly burned man's body in the fruitvale neighborhood at the same apartment building where a 77-year-old woman was found dead there early last month. ktvu's katie utehs is live at police headquarters with more on the possible connection between the two cases. >> reporter: heather, neighbors tell me in the fruitvale area, they see and hear plenty, but often stay quiet to protect their families. several people told me today off camera they believe the cases are connected and it's a theory police are investigating. >> we feel it is not random. >> reporter: a gruesome early morning discovery has unnerved people living along oakland's 34th avenue near foot hill

boulevard. >> that's what the danger s you don't know where you stand. >> reporter: around 4:15, firefighters extinguished a burning body. you can see them looking down from a neighbor's roof, towards the body located between a fence and an apartment complex. lieutenant henderson jordan says homicide detectives arrived shortly after. >> they are treating the incident as a suspicious death. >> reporter: police say the body, indistinguishable as far as age and identity, was a man. neighbors we spoke with think today's incident is connected to an earlier homicide. >> it's scary. three or four weeks in a row. >> reporter: responding to a welfare check in early february, police found 77-year- old susan fong bound and dead in her apartment. a 56-year-old male relative was also inside, but uninjured in, what police initially called a home invasion robbery. >> that is something that they are actively looking to, that it may be connected, but we don't know. >> reporter: we checked with the coroner's office. they are still waiting on

toxicology reports to determine fong's cause of death. it is an open homicide investigation. an autopsy for the badly burned male body is scheduled for monday. neighbors also tell me a woman arrived on scene this morning and spoke with police, cried hysterically for about a half hour as well. police have not said if she's related to the case or if they obtained information from her. they are asking for the public's help and want you to come forward if you have any information about either case. live in oakland, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2news. a gunman is still at large tonight, after a shooting in a san rafael restaurant. it happened about 1:30 this morning at paws mexican and filipino cuisine. according to witnesses, a man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt walked in, shot the victim several times, then ran out. the victim is described only as a 31-year-old man. he is hospitalized in very serious condition. police say other customers were inside at the time, but no one else was injured. while parts of the bay area

are experiencing some sunshine and clear skies today, others are seeing those dark clouds, even some downpours. want to show you now video that was taken in san carlos earlier today. you can see those dark skies, even a little rain coming down. it's been spotty. meteorologist mark tamayo has been tracking it all for us. mark, are the showers going to continue through the rest of the weekend? >> heather, we still have the chances heading into sunday. but the overall coverage and chances are winding down a bit for your sunday. as far as rainfall totals over the past 24 hours, once again, this has been a productive storm. you can see amounts adding up, especially looking at the boulder creek number coming up. santa cruz, significant rainfall earlier this morning. but as you move away from santa cruz, san jose picked up about a quarter of an inch and a few hundredths of an inch towards napa and santa rosa. as far as the latest on live storm tracker 2, rain still a big factor in southern california. we still have the snow showers out to our east, toward the sierra, with lingering decreasing activity.

still a few lingering showers out there. right now, our radar, fairly quiet. we could have a few scattered showers in the short-term. there we go with live doppler sweeps. lots of cloud cover. partly cloudy skies this evening with the possibility of a few showers in the short- term. coming up in our full weather update, we'll break down the shower chances for sunday and highlight more rain chances coming up in the five-day forecast. >> thank you, mark. in southern california, evacuations are in effect after the second powerful storm in a week moved through the region. flood waters stranded two people, as well as their two dogs. they became stuck in a tree, trying to escape the rising water of the los angeles river. rescuers with the l.a. fire department carefully removed the frightened animals out of the tree one by one to a nearby rescue boat. all four escaped uninjured. check out this massive mudslide in altadena near l.a. heavy rains have turned the area interest a muddy mess. the rain triggered several mudslides, forcing the

evacuations of thousands of southern california residents. people who refused to heed the warnings are now stuck inside their homes. at the moment, vehicles are not able to travel on the mud- covered roads. while much of the state is enjoying the wet weather, california is still in the midst of a drought. today, the governor signed emergency legislation aimed at providing relief. he stressed all californians still need to continue to conserve water. the more than $687 million will go to free up water supplies and help those hardest hit by the drought, including money for housing and food for workers directly impacted by the drought. it speeds up funding for conservation and water management projects and it also helps fund emergency drinking water supplies. the two storms this week have provided some relief here in the bay area, but water district officials say we are far from being out of the woods. in fact, east bay mud says it's received an inch and a half of rain, not nearly enough to fill its reservoirs, which right now are at 72% capacity. we have a special section

on our website it's under hot topics. in it, you'll find more details on the drought legislation the governor signed today, plus reservoir levels and also ideas on how you can conserve. a driverless suv crashed into a house in the middle of the night after weaving a path of destruction down a street. ktvu's patty lee joins us live from the oakland neighborhood, where residents are stunned that anyone would put a weight on a gas pedal and send the vehicle barreling down a neighborhood street. very weird, patty. >> very weird, exactly, ken, and very dangerous. you take one look at the damage and it's clear this chevy tahoe came barreling down the street, totalling this garage and several cars in the process. now, this happened around 1:30 this morning. the delaney family was sleeping in the rooms behind the garage. some thought there had been an earthquake until they smelled gas and heard an engine running. they tried to check on a driver, but didn't see one. at that point, they fled the

house. only after police and fire arrived did the delaneys learn they weren't the only victims on the street. >> pretty clear that someone had purposely, you know, put the fuel on this thing and sent it down the hill. it was -- it's really scary. this is weird, very weird crime. >> reporter: in addition to the garage, multiple yards and a street sign, four cars were damaged, three totaled, and tonight, the delaneys, as you see, have finished boarding up their garage. they are still waiting for power, but say they are just grateful that no one in this neighborhood was physically hurt. reporting live in oakland, patty lee, ktvu channel 2news. police in berkeley say they are investigating their first homicide of the year. that's after officers found a man friday morning dead in his apartment on addison street near the intersection of san pablo and university avenues. a employs spokeswoman said investigators did turn up signs of a homicide. the victim is described only as a man in his 50s.

a college student with ties to the bay area will remain jailed on the east coast until his trial. the 18-year-old is accused of building bombs in his central pennsylvania apartment. he was arrested in january. yesterday, a federal judge reversed his earlier decision to free the penn state altoona student. the judge said he changed his mind after learning that the student was on probation in his hometown of san carlos for a trespassing violation. crews are still trying to figure out what caused a power outage in the east bay today that affected thousands of customers, including the oakland airport. the lights went out at about 8:45 this morning in an area stretching from the airport east. pg&e says at its peak, the outage affected almost 6800 customers. the oakland airport had to switch over to a backup circuit. the utility says power was rerouted by about 10:30 this morning. there's still no word on what caused that outage. meantime, more than 2000 residents are without power

right now, after a crash in sonoma county. around 2:00 this afternoon, a driver traveling on highway 12 near glenn ellen veered off of the road, then struck a power pole. highway 12 was shut down for a time near the br cohen winery and olive oil company. it reopened 40 minutes ago. pg&e still working to repair downed lines. a warning in the east bay. all westbound lines on highway 24 near the caldecott tunnel will be closed tomorrow morning along with the third bore. the closure will be in effect from midnight to 5:00 a.m. while crews remove a traffic sign. drivers will be detoured onto surface streets in oakland. eastbound highway 24 will remain open during that part of the closure. hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold and jewelry, gone in a moment. investigators say it didn't happen in a store, but on the street. >> developing news to tell you about on the crisis in ukraine. president obama's request of russia's leader during their 90- minute conversation. >> and a sinking feeling in

. the official chinese news agency reports tonight at least 27 people are dead after a group armed with knives staged an attack at a train station in southwestern china. more than a hundred others are reported to be injured t happened at the kung ming rail station. authorities are calling it an act of terrorism and say police shot several of the attackers. new developments tonight in ukraine, where the military is on full alert after russia seized control of crimea. russian troops stripped of their insignias are now in control of government buildings, as well as three airports. today, the russian parliament granted president vladimir

supplier is out nearly half a million dollars, after precious jewels were stolen right from his hand in san carlos. the 43-year-old wants to remain anonymous, but tells me he was headed to jeffrey's diamonds and goldsmith. the director of operations at the store had no idea about the robbery until after it happened. >> we had just closed and so it didn't have much to do with our store. the person who got robbed was coming to our store, but was not here. >> reporter: the jeweler had just crossed walnut street, when a group of masked men shouted at him, one man got out and pointed a gun and stole his briefcase. >> if he had parked his car somewhere else and gone somewhere else, if he was followed, he might have been robbed then. >> reporter: the jeweler thinks he was followed to san carlos. he says his briefcase had diamonds and other high end jewels valuing upwards of $400,000. the san mateo county sheriff's office needs the public's help tracking down the four suspects, last seen in a silver

honda, with paper license plates. >> we are working the case and we have a pretty good track record with arresting bad guys. hopefully we'll find these people and take them off the streets. >> reporter: the jeweler says he's doing okay, but it makes him think twice about doing business in the bay area. for the past 15 years, he's traveled the country and feels the area between burlingame and redwood city are unsafe for suppliers. he knows he's not the first jeweler to be robbed and he likely won't be the last. in san carlos, christina rendon, ktvu channel 2news. house minority leader nancy pelosi today praised one san francisco community for its efforts in creating affordable housing. the democratic leader spoke about the progress, success and renovation of the tenderloin neighborhood development centers kelly cullen community. it was completed just last year, in 2013, and transformed the historic ymca building on golden gate avenue into housing for the homeless. >> i'm here to say thank you to all of you, not only for what

iconic landmark frozen in time. take a look. parts of the famed niagara falls are still today. you can actually see water flowing over and around the frozen falls. researchers say more than 88% of the great lakes right now are covered with ice. mother nature put on a light show, meantime, for parts of the united kingdom thursday night. the red and green lights are called the ora borealis, known as the northern lights, when solar flairs hit the earth's magnetic fields. the recent rains are blamed for a sinkhole in santa cruz that's closed part of a scenic street, near the intersection of westcliffe drive and woodrow avenue. it appears to be between the sidewalk and ocean. traffic is being diverted around the area. part of westcliffe drive is closed. no word on when repairs will be made and when the street will be reopened. lots of problem with the winter weather. >> i'm sure we'll probably see more scenes like that across the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo to find out if we're in store for more wet weather.

>> there is a chance, but at least we'll scale back quite a bit on the coverage, intensity. about a month ago, we couldn't even see a rain drop out there. it has been a very active month, the month of february, headed into march. still have a few scattered rain showers out there. right now on live storm tracker 2, you see the rain coverage moving into southern california and rain showers toward the sierra, seeing storm totals of over two feet of additional snow. full amounts in the sierra. right now, we have lots of clouds out there and possibly a few showers scattered around the region, especially toward parts of the north bay, moving into parts of northern marin county. talking about the very productive month, these are all the rainy days this month. you can see the numbers really going up. santa rosa for the month of february, over 9 inches of rain. livermore, nearly 2 1/2 inches of rain. look at san francisco, approaching 6 inches of rain. as i mentioned earlier, we picked up a few scattered rain showers late last night into early this morning.

for tonight, partly to mostly cloudy skies. here is our live camera looking out toward the oakland estuary, toward san francisco. still a solid cloud deck. tomorrow, we're still tracking shower chances. overnight lows first thing tomorrow morning, mostly cloudy skies, temperatures to start out your sunday will be in the 40s to around 50 degrees. so the lingering rainfall really focused down towards southern california and those amounts really adding up. take a look at los angeles and pasadena. over 3 inches of rain. cal poly, san luis obispo, adding to the totals tonight. lots of cloud cover, but the main focus of the rain is moving to the south. tomorrow for your sunday, this weather system moves in from the pacific. definitely a cloud producer for us and possibly a few scattered light showers working their way back into the region. it's not a washout, but not completely dry. in fact, here's our forecast model. we'll put this into motion tomorrow morning. mostly cloudy skies. look what happens, though, late in the morning, into the afternoon hours.
