minute. it's monday, march 3rd. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. we have rosemary in for steve. >> good morning to you. it is sun up. but not shining on us. take a look at all of this gray. you can even detect a few rain cells on the scene. let's get to the north bay. we're mostly cloudy. we remain mainly dry. perhaps a little bit of drizzle out there this morning. coming in, in time for your afternoon commute. and for the north bay, it will be sooner than that. let me time it out for you. picking it up this morning, still to the north of us. as we get into 8:00, 9:00. it creeps into sonoma county. as we get into the lunch hour, it doesn't go any farther than that. here we are in the noontime, still over the north bay, perhaps over parts of sonoma county. as we get into 2:00, 3:00, things start to change. it begins to fill in along the central and south bay in time for the evening drive, it looks like light rain on the roadways. we have another round of rain

coming our way for your back-to- work monday. temperatures right now in the upper 40s to low to mid-50s. it is a mostly cloudy start. chance for showers in the forecast by the lunch hour. as you from the model, not a lot going on and into the afternoon those rain showers will be with us. temperaturewise we'll be right about where we should be for this afternoon back in the 60s a lot like we had yesterday and the day before. 62 degrees for oakland, 59 san francisco. 62 in fremont. upper 50s in napa. again, with another wet day expected for your monday. i'll have a look into the extended forecast. i will have a look at some of the rainfall totals expected in a few minutes. good morning. we're looking at a commute that's much busier than a half- hour ago. we have a 30, 35-minute drive time between oakland and san francisco. most of that time is gonna be spent waiting here at the toll plaza, then on the bridge a little bit of time. no major problems there.

i want to mention the traffic is going to be okay on highway 92. there's a crash on highway 1 near 84. at first it was thought to be a minor injury crash but now they are sending a medical helicopter on the coast. highway 1 at 84. let's talk about the commute, southbound 680, pretty heavy and pretty slow on 680 and on 242 all the way down. i also want to mention the traffic on 80 westbound in contra costa county stop/start from the hercules area all the way down to richmond. it's not a huge traffic delay but it is certainly not a light drive as you come down into the berkeley area. 7:03. let's go back to dangerous crash on fremont city streets. several people were injured this morning now there are more streets blocked in another crash up the road. alex savidge is on the scene of that one. alex? >> reporter: well, good morning to you. we just came over to this new crash that happened a short time ago. this is a deadly pedestrian

accident. fremont police are out here piecing together exactly what took place. you can see the area blocked off here with crime scene tape. this is washington boulevard going left to right on your screen. this is right near olive avenue. this is where one person was hit and killed by a car just a short time ago while trying to cross the street. it's unclear if the victim was in the crosswalk. we're still waiting to talk to police. the driver involved in the deadly crash remained here after the accident. this is, by the way, the second serious crash in fremont just this morning. after midnight a 4-year-old girl and her mother both suffered critical injuries in a drunk driving crash a few blocks away on osgood road. police say that girl's mother was under the influence, driving a gray honda civic when she slammed head on into another car coming the opposite direction. that little girl was strapped into a car seat but police say the car seat doesn't appear to have been properly buckled in.

police believe the honda veered into a toyota camera and the driver of the other car appeared to be under the influence, according to police. but that driver suffered minor injuries. police say this whole situation was very difficult to investigate a crash involving a child. >> it makes it tough. we all have kids. we're all family people. they -- the amount of helplessness you feel when you come into something like that, it's really tough. it affects all of us. >> reporter: police say the woman driving that honda was -- is a 33-year-old woman from the fremont area. she has critical injuries but she's expected to survive. police say it's unclear if her 4-year-old daughter will survive. she's still being treated right now at the hospital. it's also possible both drivers involved in that early-morning accident could face charges because both of them were thought to be under the influence. this, again, is a new crash, just around the corner from the crash that happened around

midnight. washington boulevard near olive avenue closed down right now as fremont police piece together a deadly pedestrian accident. one person hit and killed trying to cross the street here. we're expecting to get more details from police shortly. we should have that later this morning here on "mornings on 2." we're live in fremont, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. 7:06. new this morning, a water main break has caused an overflow of water in a neighborhood in san rafael. it happened around 4:30 this morning at manual fretas parkway. firefighters say the water main belongs to the recycled water system used for irrigation. that's why nearby residents never had their water turned off. the street remains open to traffic. police still searching in san rafael for a missing 93- year-old man. he's robert davis, last seen by his daughter wednesday night after they had dinner together. she watched him drive away. she says her father never

arrived at the villa marin retirement community, where he's lived for the past ten years. well, since then, police, family members and friends and volunteers have been out here trying to find him. >> on thursday and friday, combined, my brother and i put 200 miles on our vehicles going left and right up and down through the county. >> now, mr. davis was driving a 2001 silver toyota camry. it has a rusted dent on the right front bumper and a missing hubcap. his family says he's in good shape, physically and mentally. he may have become lost while driving home in the rain. the man accused of snatching a 9-year-old girl from a school bathroom in san mateo and then assaulting her is due in court today. police say 26-year-old bradley marazek took the girl from parkside elementary in september of 20123 dragged her off -- 2012, dragged her off campus. she escaped by kicking him and

throwing a rock at him. he's also accused of going into a daly city school bathroom and taking photos of four girls. in exchange of pleading no contest, he's set to get 27 years and four months in prison. happening today -- a big push to allow california community colleges to offer four-year degrees. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live now from san jose where you are out there talking to students who are going to sacramento this morning to make their case to lawmakers. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. well, a bus full of evergreen students just left campus, headed to sacramento. they want lawmakers to know that community college students need more opportunities and they say a new bill can help accomplish that. now, dozens of students gathered on campus this morning to be part of the annual march in march event. they are joining thousands of students across the state traveling to the california to urge support for public

education. students are supporting 850, a proposal to allow community colleges to offer four-year degrees. the author of the bill says that california needs to produce 1 million more bachelor degrees than it currently does to remain economically competitive. students say it will also help them financially. >> that can have a huge impact in students' lives. college is extremely expensive. if we open the doors, we can open doors to more educational backgrounds. that way they can achieve more in their lives. this could help them financially, you know, and this could be a great step for their future. >> reporter: if the bill is approved, it would be a pilot program. community colleges would not duplicate similar programs by nearby four-year institutions. instead, each college would identify unmet work force needs in the program and tailor a program that students could earn a bachelor degree in. students will meet with

lawmakers about their concerns and needs later. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:09. san francisco mayor ed lee is celebrating a victory in his campaign to improve the city's public housing. the city has won approval to take part in a new federal program. it allows private housing developers to take over rundown public properties in exchange to upgrade them. residents should see improvements in the next 18 months. mayor lee says he's determined to improve these plagued with rats and mohammed and other dangerous conditions -- mold and other dangerous conditions. another winter storm plaguing the east coast. somewhere in there, that's the white house. through the haze there. not pretty. because of the weather, the u.s. and senate and house have postponed all votes of legislative business until tomorrow. east coast could get between 8 and 12 inches of new snow.

they are also bracing for .10 of ice on top of that. the national weather service issuing winter weather warns and advisories for -- wanting -- warnings advisories. so far this morning, more than 2,000 flights around the country have been canceled. most were announced by airlines reductant to fly into bad weather. we did check for you. bay area airports, sfo, reporting hour-long delays on even more departing flights now. a couple of flights have been canceled. all of the affected flights were headed to the east coast. now, oakland and san jose airports not reporting any problems right now. 7:11. law enforcement agencies in the sacramento area are investigating two deadly officer-involved shootings nine hours apart. the first happened around 2:15 yesterday morning.

two sacramento county sheriff deputies shot and killed a man with an assault rifle. deputies say they told the man to drop his weapon. when he didn't, they opened fire. the deputies have been placed on paid leave pending the investigation. then at 11:30 yesterday morning, police in citrus heights shot and killed a woman after they say she led them on a chase in a suspected stolen car. the chase ended when she rammed into two police cars. that's when officers opened fire. those who knew the woman say the incident started with some kind of family argument. >> she and grandma got in an accident. she grabbed the keys and grandma called the cops. a horrible story. a tragedy on the rails in martinez. just moments ago, the school suent talked about the death of an 8th grade girl killed on the

pretoria courtroom. now, he's charged with the deadly shooting of his fashion model girlfriend at his home valentine's day last year. he claims he killed her by mistake. thinking she was an intruder in his bathroom. he faces life in prison behind bars if convicted. russian's foreign minister says the thousands of troops are protecting russian citizens living there. those troops have taken control of the region and demanding that keppens be given up -- weapons given up. they've blocked 13 internet pages linked to the ukraine protest movement. the european union, the united nations and nato are demanding that russia back down. >> we call upon russia to honor all its international commitments to withdraw its forces to its bases and to

refrain from any interference elsewhere in ukraine. >> in response to russia's actions, the u.s. and six other countries are canceling plans to attend a g-8 summit in russia in joint. in a joint statement, the country says russia's advances in ukraine violates principles and values on which the g-8 operates. tomorrow, secretary of state, jrk yrk flies to ukraine to meet with the new leaders. he's condemned what he has called an ankrill act of regression on the part of russia and he warns economic sanctions could follow. well, around the nation, including in san francisco, ukrainian americans have taken to the streets to protest russia's actions. ukrainians and their supporters staged this protest yesterday outside of the russian consulate in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood.

they say it's upsetting to see what's happening to their country. a campaign is being launched to try to double the number of u.s. students who study abroad within the next five years. hundreds of thousands of international students come here to the u.s. to study every year. but only 10% of u.s. students take part in study abroad programs. the interstut interstut says they've increased and will focus on more low-income students and others who have not participated in high numbers. speaking of numbers, forbes magazine released the 28th annual ranking for the world's richest people. this year's list not only broke records for its sizemore than 1600 but also broke records for the number of women on the list. last year, 138 women made the list. this year 172 were on the list.

facebook's mark zuckerberg came in at number 21 was the biggest net worth gainer and cheryl sandburg made the list for the first time, 1,540. top of the list, mr. bill gates. want to check in with sal. see what's happening on the roads. >> we have a serious crash on the peninsula on highway 1 along the coast at 84. this crash is blocking the entire roadway as they have to allow a medical helicopter to get on the roadway. if you are north of the crash, you can go up to highway 92 to get across. if you are south of it, you may have to go through pescadero on pescadero creek road if you have to go now. you know what a long way around that would be. soef you might want to wait -- sore you might want to wait if you can to have this accident cleared from the lanes.

i want to -- southbound 680 is slow through contra costa county from about 242 down to walnut creek and then a little bit of slow traffic from walnut creek southbound on 680 into alamo. let's go to some live pictures. this is the bay bridge toll plaza, it's about a 35-minute drive time. most of that time at the toll plaza and then off to the bridge. if you are driving through san jose, has not been too bad. out of downtown san jose into the valley it still looks pretty good. let's go to steve. >> how about rosemary? >> i'm sorry. >> that's okay. steve's not feeling well. i'm in for him giving you a look at all of the gray out there. overcast skies in the forecast for today and eventually, we will see some rain. we had a new system moving in. you can see the north corner of california getting pretty wet. we do remain dry. we will remain dry as we get through the morning hours. and then as we get into the afternoon, things are start to chaining. i'm picking up a few returns. perhaps a little bit of

good morning. we're live at martinez junior high school where students and teachers are mourning 14-year- old jenna betti. she was hit and killed by a train yesterday in martinez. the special thing her friends are doing to remember her. that's coming up in a live report. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about your weather and traffic. rosemary is in for steve this morning. >> it's a gray start out there. before long, the rain will begin to fall. starts in the north bay and then shifts south for the afternoon and it looks like just in time for our evening drive. here is a look at where the rain reside right now. it will begin to shift. notice a few returns in the north bay, the far north bay. it will take a while before it reaches into the central bay.

that's getting busier around the bay area for sure as we get to the peak of the morning commute. southbound 101 slows at highway 37. it gets better near the civic center into central san rafael. as we move to the south bay, i would say 85 is slow from 87 all the way up into saratoga which shouldn't surprise you if you drive it every day. it's not a very good freeway. 17 is slow approaching 85. 280 is moderate. so is 101. we have slow traffic on 101 approaching 880. as we move over to 880 southbound out of fremont, most of that is slow until you pass stevenson. then it breaks free from milpitas. 35 to 40-minute wait now drive time at the toll plaza and on the bridge. that includes both times but it is about 40 minutes of your drive time here. if you are driving in san francisco, north and southbound 101 traffic does look good as

you drive through it. highway 84 at highway 1 still an issue if you are driving along the coast, expect delays because of a very serious injury accident there. now, let's go back to the desk. 7:33. we have new details about the death of a 14-year-old girl on the train tracks in martinez. just a short time ago, the superintendent of the 8th grader's middle school talked to us about the tragedy that's stunned the school campus. tara moriarty is outside this girl's school right now. tara, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we spoke to the school superintendent as well as the principal. you can understand they are very upset. very emotional and they are really support of bracing themselves for the worst this morning. that's because a lot of students, possibly have not received the bad news yet. 14-year-old jenna betti was struck and killed by a freight train yesterday often while walking along the tracks with her boyfriend. friends have been posting pictures and messages on

twitter. classmates plan to wear pink in her honor today. they say she was a popular soccer player, vibrant and always happy. >> she was always laughing. if you would see her at the lunch table, sitting with her friends, she's laughing and smiling, in class, she was a good student. but she also, like i say, had a smile and was kind of the life of the party in a very positive way and was a phenomenal athlete. >> reporter: railway officials confirm two people were walking along the tracks. when they saw the train coming, they quickly jumped out of the way. but betti got back on the tracks. police are looking into the possibility she was trying to retrieve her cell phone. students are arriving for school right now. we're not on campus. we're gonna give students their space as grief counselors are brought in today to help them cope with the tragedy. we're live in martinez. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:35. a woman from newark is fighting for her life in an east bay

hospital this morning. police say she was viciously attacked inside her own home early yesterday morning. newark police called in the s.w.a.t. team after receiving the first 911 call. a small army of s.w.a.t. officers immediately sealed off the streets surrounding the house on mayhew landing road. stunned neighbors say the armed officers went door to door ordering them to leave their homes. >> he literally grabbed me by the wrist, you need to leave. we're evacuating you. we already evacuated the people. the first thing i said was what about my family in the house? >> police say another person living in the victim's home was taken into custody for questioning. it's not clear what led up to thing attack. 7:36. chilling new details about a young man accused of killing a san jose teenager more than four years ago. police found the body of 15- year-old michael russell outside of his san jose home in november 2009. detectives say he had been stabbed to death. jay williams, now 20 years old,

will soon go on trial for the death of russell. his former high school classmate. newly-released documents reveal that williams believed his religion, say tannism, a -- satanism, allowed him to kill. those documents show he previously killed two animals. the controversy continues at a santa rosa mall after the decision to fire its head of security. you may remember this video of security guards approaching friends and family of andy lopez on february 17th at santa rosa plaza. the group was wearing t-shirts in memory of the teen shot and killed by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy last october. the guards reportedly asked the group to remove their andy lopez t-shirts or leave the mall. >> we're responding and acting in accordance to their policy. we adapted the procedure years ago on days of protest. it's worked well with occupy protests as well as other andy

lopez protests. >> russell, the former head of security at the hall, says he was fired a week after the confrontation. he says he is considering legal options. 7:37. happening today -- in just about an hour from now, an elementary school in san francisco is lawn. ing a student crossing guard program. brian flores joining us live in san francisco to tell us how this is aimed at keeping pedestrians safer. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, dave. unfortunately, we've reported on way too many pedestrian accidents and fatalities and this is something that city officials recognize is the fact there has been alarming numbers of accidents and fatalities. they say this program set to launch in about an hour will teach kids about pedestrian safety. a-20, a student crossing guard program, kicks off here at commodore sloat school. about 25 minutes students will be the first student crossing guards in the area.

the program hopes to reduce the amount of pedestrian fatalities, something that they have seen way too much of in recent months. the event will be kicked off by greg suhr, norman yee and richard karanza. both the police chief and supervisor yee say they were both crossing guards growing up. supervisor yee says he hopes the program expands to all of the schools in the district. as we take it back out here live, for now, commodore sloat and two other schools in district 7 will kick off the programs in the coming weeks. we're live here in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 7:39. a second fire in less than four months at a home near san leandro is being investigated this morning. the latest fire began about 5:00 yesterday morning on altamont road near san leandro. firefighters say no one was living in the house but neighbors have been parking their cars there so the house would not look vacant. neighbors say that fire was

terrorism. they say the attackers were six men and two women. a fighter jet pilot was killed. a snowstorm made it hard for the rescue crews to get to the rescue site. the name of the pilot has not been released. 7:54. people are still in the hospital this morning after a more than 100-car pileup in colorado that killed one woman. this happened early saturday afternoon on interstate 25 in denver. witnesses say heavy snow began falling but drivers were not slowing down. suddenly, some of the cars lost control causing a chain reaction. 30 people were taken to local hospitals. three of them remain in serious condition. police say it could take a week to pinpoint the exact moment the collision happened.

the scene. he's the 49-year-old man from fremont and he was speaking with investigators this morning. he told them he thought he had hit a bird. he didn't realize it was a person he struck. police say he was driving the corvette that struck the woman around 6:00 this morning. police don't believe the man was under the influence. they can't say exactly how fast he was going before that crash. but one neighbor did tell us a lot of drivers do speed here on washington boulevard near the entrance of 680 and crossing the street in this area can be risky. >> a lot of people speed on this street. 680 is right there. big part of -- of the industrial part of fremont is down on osgood. >> reporter: quite a bit more for fremont for police to figure out. they've not identified the woman who they believe was hit

and killed by that car. they are gonna work on doing that. they will continue to interview the driver involved in this crash this morning. again, a pedestrian struck and killed crossing washington boulevard right near olive. this is not far away from the entrance from 680. police say this area will be blocked off for the investigation for the next few hours. it may not open up until noon today. we're live in fremont, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:05. the first accident happened a few blocks away at osgood. it sent three people to the hospital including a 4-year-old little girl. the chp says two cars were wroved involved -- were involved. both are suspected of dui. a 33-year-old woman was one of them. she and her daughter suffered major injuries and they say the child's safety seat was not properly restrained. a water main break has flooded part of a neighborhood

street. it happened at 4:30 and manuel fretas parkway. firefighters say the water main belongs to the system used for irrigation. that's the reason nearby residents never had their water turned off. that street by the way remains open to traffic. a family in marin is continuing to search for a 93- year-old man missing for five days. robert davis was seen by his daughter on wednesday night after the two had dinner in corte madera. she said she watched him drive away towards san rafael but -- but he never arrived at the retirement where he lives. police have been searching for him ever since. >> because it was a rainy evening, the glare from headlights, the rain coming down that maybe he missed his turnoff and confusion set in. >> ground and air searches have turned up no sign of the 2001 silver toyota camera davis was

driving. it has a rusted dent on the right front bumper and a missing hubcap. hundreds of fliers have been posted throughout the county. well, happening today, the man accused of snatching a 9- year-old girl from a school bathroom in san mateo then assaulting her he's due in court. police say 26-year-old bradley took the girl from markside elementary in september of 2012, dragged her off the campus and assaulted her. now, she managed to escape by kicking him and throwing a rock at him. he's also accused of of going into a -- of going into a daly city school bathroom and taking photos of four girls. in ecchanges of pleading no contest to the charges, he's set to -- to get 27 years in prison. getting a bachelor's degree, believe it or not, that's what one lawmaker is proposing. this morning he's receiving a lot of support. janine de la vega joining us live right now from san jose to

tell us about the push there. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning. i'm here at evergreen valley college. a lot of students here support that idea. about an hour or so idea, they climbed on a bus headed to sacramento to talk to legislators. dozens of students from evergreen valley community college this morning gathered to be part of the annual march in march event. they are joining thousands of students across the state who are traveling to the capital to urge support for public education. this year, the students from san jose are supporting sb-850 which is a proposal to allow community colleges to offer four-year degrees. the author of the bill says that california needs to produce 1 million more bachelor degrees than it currently does to remain economically competitive. if not, it will fall behind. students would benefit by saving money while living at home. >> the prices just to attend and receive a degree at the

universities, so expensive. we want to be able to open up the availability for the massive students. >> reporter: now, if the bill is approved, it would be a pilot program. community colleges would not duplicate similar programs by nearby four-year institutions. instead, each college would identify an unmet force need and tailor a program that students could earn a bachelor's degree in. several students will be meeting with lawmakers about their concerns and needs later in sacramento. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:09. san francisco mayor ed lee is celebrating a victory in his campaign to improve the city's public housing. the city has won approval to take part in a new federal program. it allows private housing developers to take over rundown public properties in exchange for a requirement to upgrade them. residents should see improvements within the next 18

next several hours. live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. speaking of flight delays, more than 2,000 flights have been canceled. most were announced yesterday by airlines who say they are reluctant to fly into bad weather. sfo is now reporting 90-minute delays on some departing flights. a couple of flights have been canceled. all of the affected flights were headed to the east coast. oakland and san jose are not reporting any problems at their airports so far. this is a look at the current storm from the neats satellite as it move -- nasa satellite as it moves across the country. this is the same system that hit us in the bay area last wednesday before moving down to southern california. beside bringing snow and ice to the northeast, the storm is expected to hit the south with severe thunderstorms. 8:16. tomorrow, secretary of state john kerry flies to ukraine. he will meet with the new ukrainian government leaders about the russian takeover of the crimean peninsula.

thousands of russian troops have surrounded military bases. they are demanding that ukrainian soldiers give up their weapons. in response to russia's actions, the u.s. and six other nations are canceling plans to go to the g-8 summit in russia in june. in a joint statement, the countries say russia's advances in ukraine violate the principles and values on which the g-8 operates. oil refineries could feel the impact of the growing tension between russia and ukraine. the price of crude oil is already up a dollar a barrel. oil analysts are worried and economic embargo could be placed against russia. that would cut the supply and the impact would be felt around the world. russia is the second largest producer of energy. around the country, including in san francisco, ukrainian americans have taken to the streets to protest russia's actions. ukrainians and supporters

you are counting minutes here. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. we've been steady and slow about 40 minutes. most of that sim is waiting at the toll plaza and then on the bridge, a little bit of waiting there. 880 northbound, looks like this is actually alameda county. 880 northbound at tennyson there is a crash. but southbound traffic is going to be slow as you head down. as i move the map down all the way down to stevenson, most of this is slow as you drive through. notice that the san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge are not bad. let's go to rosemary. it will be a different look coming home. we're looking at wet roadways for the evening drive right now. we're mainly dry. plenty of overcast skies from the coast across the bay and inland. i will show you that in a moment. i want to show you this plume that stretches from northern california all the way back to the hawaiian islands. see that? a couple of disturbances within

this moist air. one of them already bringing rain to northwest california and take a look into the bay area. i'm seeing a few -- just a few returns picking up over santa rosa, sonoma, point reyes. weelt may have a little bit -- we may have a little bit of drizzle going on. maybe to the east along i-80 in and around fairfield. this is going to be sliding from north to south. it looks like most of the rain is going to hold off most of the day but in time for that evening drive, i think the scattered showers will begin falling. it could be light but it doesn't take a lot to make it a messy roadway. up in the sierra, about 7,000 feet or so, if by chance this is your drive for today, let's take a look at how much rainfall we may see out of this system. primarily over the north bay, by 2:00 or so, again the rain shadow, you can see here over the north bay. it's still -- it's already 2:00. we're still mainly try. but by 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, it begins to fill in. by the end of the evening, i

traffic for you. in for steve right now, we have rosemary. >> good morning. you may be looking outside your door thinking those clouds look like rain. yes, rain is on the way. you can see it's over northern california at this time as we slip in, we have a few cell returns that have consistently been right over areas like santa rosa. so we may add a little bit of drizzle already going on on the north edge of sonoma county perhaps along the coastline along highway 101 between windsor, santa rosa and into rohnert park. the scattered showers will be moving north. here we are with a little bit of rain. 9:00ing 10:00, the rain line doesn't move a whole lot. it continues right over the sonoma county area and even as far north as above santa rosa for the -- after the first part of the day. as we get into 2:00 or so, it begins to fill in and quills in quickly in time for the evening drive. by 5:00, i think we're all getting wet. it will be a messy evening commute for most.

53 in santa rosa right now. widespread 50s around the bay area. in san jose, you are looking at 52 right now. for the afternoon, you are going to the low 60s once again. temperatures a lot like what we have seen lately. 63 at 2:00 this afternoon. temperatures top out at 64. notice there we've got rain falling on the icon here. sun setting into the 6:00 hour. i will time it out for you again. i will show you how much rain i suspect we'll get. i will have a look at the extended forecast as well as the afternoon highs coming up. good morning, rosemary. we're looking at a commute that's still pretty busy in many areas and the drive times are still pretty high at the toll plaza, for example, you are still looking at about 40 minutes to get into san francisco. that's your drive time of the delay and also on the bridge traffic getting into the city. looking at the san mateo bridge, it might be better especially if you are closer to the bridge itself. when you get over to the peninsula, there will be slowing in san mateo but nothing that major and 101 is actually pretty do-able up to the airport.

if you are driving in the livermore valley 580 has cleared out nicely and on the way to castro valley, this is slow traffic as you drive through. a couple of minor crashes have developed there. northbound 880 is busy. let's go back to the desk. some middle school students in martinez are heading back to class at this hour. many are now learning about a tragedy involving a 14-year-old girl. ktvu's tara moriarty joining us now from martinez to tell us what the school is doing to help her classmates deal with this tragedy. tara? >> reporter: well, they do have some grief counselors that will be available today. a lot of these students didn't know what had happened. they had not heard the horrific news as they arrived at campus. you can imagine how difficult that is. we also noticed that a father got out of his car near the flagpole and placed a yellow rose there. 14-year-old jenna betti was struck and killed by a freight train yesterday evening. hours after her death, jenna's mother ported this, today our beautiful daughter kissed us

good boy. she was sitting on the train tracks with her boyfriend. why they made such a horrible decision, we'll never snow. she dropped her phone of at horn blew to get back to retrieve it. she didn't judge the approach. the train creates a vacuum and sucks you in. we are beyond devastated." today counselors are on the campus to console students. >> you know students are hurting and they have questions and they don't know what to do with the feelings they have. that's why you heard some students say let's wear pink. it was her favorite color. they want to do something. don't we all. >> reporter: friends have been posting pictures and messages on twitter about jenna. they say she was a popular soccer player, vibrant, always happy. again they are wearing pink clothes and passing out pink wristbands to wear in her

honor. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:34. we also have chilling new details about a young man accused of killing a san jose teenager more than four years ago. police found the body of michael russell outside of his san jose home in november of 2009. detectives say he had been stabbed to death. jay williams is now 20 years old, will soon go on trial for the death of russell. his former high school classmate. newly released documents reportedly reveal that williams believe his religionen, satanism, allowed him to kill. documents show he previously killed two animals. the controversy continues at a santa rosa mall after the decision -- [inaudible] >> you may remember this video of security guards approaching friends and family of andy lopez on february 17th at santa rosa plaza. the group was bearing t-shirts in -- wearing t-shirts in memory of the teen shot and killed by a sheriff deputy last

october. the guards reportedly asked the group to remove their andy lopez t-shirts or leave the mall. >> we're responding and acting in acore dance to their policy. we adapted the procedure years ago on days of protest. it's worked well with occupy protests as well as andy lopez protests. >> russell, the former head of security at the mall, said he was fired a week after the confrontation. he said he's considering legal options. happening now, a knew student crossing -- a new student crossing guard program is starting. brian flores has more about how the goal is to keep kids safer around school. >> reporter: the kid, by the way, part of the student crossing guard are doing a great job. they started about five, ten minutes ago here at commodore

sloat school. this is a program that's resurrecting itself. it has not been here for many years. the hope is to expand that. to talk more about that, i'm here with norman yee and the superintendent. good morning. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: talk about this program. i mean, it has not been here for many years. >> first of all, i was a crossing guard when i was a student. so was superintendent karanza. when i cam on board last year as a -- came on board last year as a supervisor, safety was a crisis. i wanted to get something started right away. one of the things i thought about, how to get students involved in this education. i thought what did i do when i was a kid. i was able to get some funding to implement the program, it took several months to work with the school district and work with the police department and others to -- as partners to

get this thing going. what's so nice, the principal at commodore has been like a rock star. >> reporter: superintendent, talk to us about the program itself and getting students involved in this program. >> sure. so students volunteer to be part of the program and then what i really appreciate about it, there's extensive training that the students receive. we have certified police officers that are out here training them and teaching them. but having been a crossing guard when i was in elementary school, it really did develop a sense of responsibility and just knowledge about when to cross, where to cross, how to cross, being defensive when you cross. it's good life skiles. that's what we're -- skills. that's what we're about, teaching life skills. >> reporter: we're reported on many pedestrian accidents and fatalities. many in your district. how will the program reduce the numbers? >> i think this a small piece of the puzzle. i'm starting to bring

consciousness in the very young. not only will these crossing guards be influenced but the other students will see them and start to think why are they here? maybe i should be careful when i cross and drivers combined will think why are they here? it has a cascading effect for me and also my feeling is that if you start them young, their consciousness about pedestrian safety will stick with them forever. >> reporter: you want to expand this to other schools. what are we looking at in terms of the district and the city? >> i was hoping to have several pilot programs in district 7, my district. and there are two other schools lined up to get started and then the idea would be if it's successful -- and i'm pretty sure it will be -- that the school district will pick it up and expand throughout san

welcome back. 8:55. police in san francisco searching for the thieves who targeted an animal rescue organization over the weekend. stealing a vehicle filled with donated items. the car belonged to the lugaroo animal rescue cup -- group. the car disappeared between friday night and saturday night on 22nd avenue. the organization is devastated. >> leashes, collars, dog beds, bowls, all kinds of things. just a ton of stuff that had been donated over the course of several months. >> police say the stolen vehicle is a dark-colored volkswagen passat. the license plate number reads,
