"mornings on 2" starts now. welcome to "mornings on 2." live pictures from the bayfair b.a.r.t. station in san leandro. it's a little more crowded than usual. that's because there's no b.a.r.t. service south of hayward after a man was hit and killed on the tracks nearly eight hours ago. we have live team coverage on your commute. we'll hear from sal and brian flores in a moment. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. steve, you said maybe take an umbrella? >> tonight. this evening the evening commute could be more cloud cover over us. i think this system will enhance. there's a pretty good system moving in. by 4:00 everybody is in the

north by. by tonight it starts to move south, 6:00 to 8:00 rain begins to pick up and move towards the peninsula, south bay, east bay. there will be lighter amounts for ourself. this system will faul apart. it's a really mild system. tomorrow things clear out. looks good and temperatures upper 60s to maybe even low 70s by friday into saturday. rainfall amounts will not be that great. .5 to an 1 farther north. around here i think .25 will cover it. to the north it will be pretty good. you can see that part of the system continues to bring in cloud cover. look for cloudy skies, very mild. some light rain to the north. not much yet. mead county, lake county, a little bit offshore. we have to wait for this system to come in. cloud cover today. 50s on the temperatures. if you need to do anything, get out, golf, tennis, do it in the morning. afternoon things could pick up. there's a little bit of driz. pacifica, a little bit of

drizzle there. mainly a cloudy day with rain developing later on. 60s near 70s. here's sal. we have traffic that will be busy because of what's going on with b.a.r.t. we'll give you a full explanation of what happened last night to cause the closure of three stations. right now, more people are driving into san francisco. it's a 30, 45-minute delay from the toll plaza into san francisco. most of that time is spent waiting at the toll plaza. and then a little bit of time on the bridge itself. moving along to 880 northbound and southbound, this section of the freeway looks good. if you are driving from downtown oakland to catch a flight at oakland international, down to hegenberger should take five minutes to drive. a little bit further down the road. southbound 880 and northbound 880 busier than it normally is heading down to fremont and some people may be taking the car as some of these stations are closed. it's 7:03. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal.

all morning long we've been following the breaking news of major delays on b.a.r.t. these are live pictures near the south hayward station. that's where a man was hit and killed by a b.a.r.t. train last late night. there's still no service south of the hayward station. the police investigation has wrapped up. but service has not been restoredded. riders have been scrambling all morning long to make travel lines. brian flores is live at the bayfair station. i'm sure it's pretty crowded, brian. >> reporter: it is crowded at some points and scrambling is probably the best way, as you described it, yeah. we're live in san leandro at the bayfair b.a.r.t. station. a lot of people here at the station. this is not the usual scene here. less people here on a typical day but as we mentioned because of this police investigation just south of here, there's

this residual effect it will be felt through the morning at least. we saw many confused b.a.r.t. passengers. b.a.r.t. service is shut down between free montsouth hayward as police -- fremont south hayward as police investigate. the bayfair b.a.r.t. station is where passengers were to go. a richmond bound train was seen on the fremont side, just waiting to see if a san francisco bound train would roll through. an unrelated equipment problem between hayward and bayfair made for a bigger headache, i should say, this morning as well. >> trying to get back from work in the morning commute. pretty much like a 25-minute delay for me. my coworkers -- [inaudible] the spheks san francisco train

is in 11 minutes. they are not telling us anything. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says they contacted other transit answers like a.c. transit but they couldn't gather the number of personnel needed in a short amount of time. but as the investigation continues as we approach the heart of the morning commute, you can expect residual delays for b.a.r.t. as we take it back out here live, passengers making their way to the station, running to the station. b.a.r.t. train just approached here, just the platform, some passengers are getting on board as we speak. we here 7:30 is the time when full service will be restored. but this delay will take place in the morning. we'll keep you updated as well. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we'll check back for an update. if you are headed out the door, we will have continuing coverage of the brt delays on mobile ktvu and ktvu.com.

[chanting] >> there were jeers in city council chambers -- in the city council chambers. this will be a central base for collecting information from the police, surveillance cameras. opponents fear it will be used to spy on people. mayor quan trying to ease fears voted for a measure that only covers surveillance at the port of oakland and not the entire city. 7:07. the hercules high school transgender student who

reported a hate crime attack has recanted that story. the teen who is by logically female had told police he was leaving a boys' bathroom at the school monday morning when three other boys attacked him. police say in a followup interview, the teen admitted to making up the story. the school board president is relieved the student was not assaulted. but they still want cameras on the campus. >> if there would have been surveillance cameras -- it never would have happened if there was a camera system up there. i know that for a fact. >> the student could be charged with making a false criminal report. the richmond city council has decided to hire and independent investigator to examine the troubled public housing department. that follows complaints from residents who see the richmond housing authority doesn't follow up on maintenance

requests. those residents complained about infestation of cockroaches, bedbugs and say many of the apartments have problems with mold. we're now learning the source of those leaks on the new eastern span of the bay bridge. today's chronicle reports recent tests indicate a system designed to keep rain water from seeping into the bridge's guardrails is failing. and that's contributing to hundreds of leaks that could put the bridge at risk of corrosion. caltrans chief engineer said the bridge was designed to be water resistant but not water tight. but the agency is still promising a new investigation. the world's largest light sculpture will keep lighting up the bay bridge. they were supposed to disappear after a two-year run. tara moriarty tells us about a plan, tara, to keep the l.e.d. lights shining for years. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. the lights are now gone because the sun has come up.

so you can't seep them anymore. but if you seen them at night, they are quite spectacular. there's 25,000 of shem shimmering across the western span. they were installed a year ago today. they were supposed to keep shining for one more year but thanks to the organizers called bay lights, they are gonna keep shining for another decade, they hope. the project began, it's a light sculpture project. the group has announced today it will be raising $12 million in donations to keep the bulbs burning from 2016 to 2026. some people say they are not sure if the price tag is worth it. a taxicab driver says he often takes service down there to see the view. so he thinks this will pay off.

now, the man told us that he says that a lot of people come to san francisco to see the two bridges, the golden gate and the bay bridge being the other one. bay light plans to secure a permit to keep the lights on. many water front businesses saw a 10% boost in sales since those bridge lights went up. they are pretty excited for them to stay. again, today, is the one-year anniversary of the debut. the bridge will go dark for a full ten minutes tonight just to give people an idea of what it would be like if the lights were fon forever. back to you. >> thank you. happening today an attorney for the family of lynn spaulding will file a claim against the city of san francisco. she went missing from her room at san francisco general. her body was found 17 days later in a stairwell. today's filing is the stifrt

step in a formal lawsuit. a bay area family is calling for changes at one local hospital because of how they say they were treated after the death of their young daughter. >> there is a right way to handle it and a wrong way to handle it. we experienced the wrong way to the highest degree. >> 21-month-old morgan died from complications following a heart procedure at children's hospital in oakland. her parents say their grief was made worse by mail from the hospital including repeated requests for donations. tonight, 2 investigates looks into the case and asks the hospital what's being done about it. it sounds like silicon valley is having a hiring spree. 59% of the employers who were surveyed say they will add at least one new job to their work

i want to mention that b.a.r.t. service, the best way to get in from the east bay on the fremont line or from fremont passengers is to go up to the bayfair station and take the train into san francisco from bayfair directly because that would make it a much easier trip. now, the concord line and the richmond line are not really affected getting in san francisco. but there are some delays for people who usually use the south hayward, union city and fremont station. we'll have more straight ahead. >> thank you, sal. a petaluma police officer is recovering after a scuffle with a man suspected of trying to break into cars. it happened yesterday afternoon in a parking lot on eli boulevard. police say the suspect appeared to be on drugs during a violent

struggle with an officer who was trying to take him into custody. both the officer and the suspect suffered minor injuries. that suspect is now in jail facing felony charges. 7:16. california's world-famous redwood trees are becoming targets in a growing crime problem. park rangers say wood thieves with chainsaws are stealing wood from the base of the ancient redwoods. this crime has become so prevalent it's forced the nighttime closure of a popular park along the rugged northern california coast. the national parks service has -- look at this photo -- one case of this des strackettive practice of poaching wood. they say they steal the wood from the base of the trees and use them to make coffee tables and wall clocks. 7:17. the fate of three 3rd graders caught smoking marijuana in a school bathroom is uncertain. the incident happened at sonora

elementary school in tuolumne county. they were caught when another student walked into the bathroom and reported them. other students say they saw sheriff's deputies take the kids away from school. >> it was bad. they were little kids. it shouldn't happen. >> the school will only say it follows the california education code. that means the students could be suspended or expelled. right now the case is being handled by the tuolumne county probation department. 7:18. the global climate change may be affecting your favorite dip. chipotle says a change in weather patterns led to an increase in the cost of avocados which means it might start to leave guacamole out of dishes. this may affect a salsa as well. it uses 1 the 0,000 pounds of

avocados every day. it may not able to stomach the extra cost. they say the price could go up on other ingredients like cheese, tomatoes and beef as well. >> hard to imagine. >> without guacamole. >> yeah. let's check in with sal and possibly because of the b.a.r.t. station there might be more people on the road heading to san francisco. what's the bay bridge toll plaza look like? >> it's a little bit slow there, tori. right now, we do have traffic that's backed up for a 40- minute delay, drive time, into san francisco. but dave and tori, i have to tell you, i don't think it looks much different from another day. yesterday we had a bad day and we didn't have problems. today's reason could be b.a.r.t. but it's another day slow traffic. it's hard to tell what the causality of it is. it's slow. this is 5800 on the road

new details on a murder suicide at a san francisco nursing home. police say a 60-year-old woman shot and killed her 93-year-old mother at the central gardens nursing home monday night. she then killed herself. their names have not been released. police have not released information about a motive. day three of the oscar pistorius murder trial is wrapping up in south afterfry cau. another -- africa. another neighbor was on the stand. he testified to hearing screams and gunshots. yesterday, his wife testified to hearing the same thing. defense attorneys say the couple discussed what they were going to say in court and that their testimony is not credible. pistorius is accused of killing

good morning. here is another live look at the bayfair b.a.r.t. station in san leandro. commuters trying to get to san francisco from free mont, union city and -- fremont, union city and hayward have been told to go here. that's because there was no service south of hayward due to a deadly accident last night. we're just hearing that service is about to resume after they went through -- there is the bayfair station train going through. we have live team coverage on this all morning. we'll go to sal in a moment and alex savidge for the very latest on this fluid station. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. we have a lot of cloud cover over us. maybe drizzle. some areas of fog as well. 4:00 this afternoon, just moving through the north bay. by this evening, you might get

braurt. the stations are -- b.a.r.t. the stations are opening. the trains should be running shortly along the tracks. we have from 511.org and others saying all that and one of reporters on the scene is confirming. we should have b.a.r.t. service, the trains that start running between fremont and all of the stations soon but we had big delays on b.a.r.t. because three stations were closed because of a police investigation. we'll go live to the scene and have a report coming up in a few minutes. let's take a look at the rest of the commute, though. 580 is very slow. we had a crash at 680 westbound. the traffic is going to be moderately heavy past the scene but traffic is very slow out of the altamont pass. but getting into castro valley is not that bad. you would think that more people would be on 880. however, 880 pretty normal heading down to dakota road. there was a crash and there is slow traffic. i don't want to mislead you. but it looks like a normal

delay, especially since there is a crash here. we look at contra costa county highway 4 is slow to baypoint and slow from concord to walnut creek. 80 is slow from richmond and as i look at the south bay, 85 is the slowest freeway. slow from 87 solid to saratoga. 101, slightly better than that. let's talk about the live pictures. san mateo bridge is doing pretty well. there are no major problems. traffic is moving along very nicely. now we also have a look at westbound bay bridge. that's backed up for a 40- minute delay. the drive time. i just got another tweet here from 511 bay area. they say that there's no b.a.r.t. service yet between hayward and fremont. apparently the situation keeps changing. we'll sort it out for you and get back to you. let's go back to the desk. 7:34. you've been listening to sal back on our breaking news about b.a.r.t. service right now. the south hayward b.a.r.t.

station just reopened almost 12 hours after a deadly accident. but some of the trains are not getting through. alex savidge near the tracks in hayward now. what do you know about the investigation at this moment? >> well, what i know is there are still no trains that have been coming through this area between the union city station and the south hayward station. this is where the crash happened last night where a person was struck and killed. we've not seen any trains come through this area. even though, as you can see here, b.a.r.t. police have wrapped up their investigation and workers who are out here a short time ago have left this scene as well. so it remains to be scene when trains will begin moving through the area. let me show you what we saw. the coroner came in and removed the body of the victim in this case. this was a man who was hit and killed by the train. he's not been identified. it happened about 11:30 last night while this train was heading north on an elevated section of track approaching the south hayward station. now, the train involved had 11 passengers on board it at the

time. none of them, though, were injured in this crash. all of the passengers were interviewed by investigators and then moved over to another train. a b.a.r.t. station talked a short time ago about why this investigation stretched into the morning commute. >> the investigators were waiting for sunrise to make sure they get everything they need. sunrise about 6:34. hopefully we'll be able to return to service after they've collected their evidence shortly after sunrise. >> reporter: and shortly after the victim was taken away by the coroner this morning, the train that was involved in this crash was moved out of the way. but b.a.r.t. police are saying they don't know exactly how the victim wound up on the tracks only saying he was trespassing and it doesn't appear there was foul play involved. this section of the b.a.r.t. system still shut down. we'll not seen trains moving through between union city and south hayward. we'll let you know as soon as we see activity out there.

7:37. happening today -- israel's prime is in the bay area. benjamin netanyahu is meeting with governor brown and silicon valley leaders. janine de la vega has more on why he's interested in tech and business here. >> reporter: good morning. that meeting will take place between the two here at the computer history museum on shoreline boulevard. now, israel has high concentration of engineers and a large number of startup companies and the prime minister wants to take advantage of opportunities here in california. now, this is video of the prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, earlier when he met with president barack obama in washington, d.c. he stopped in l.a. for a documentary premiere. today he will sign an agreement with governor brown to promote trade, research and economic development. there are a number of areas that the leaders want to focus

on. they include water conservation, alternative energy, cybersecurity, education and agricultural technology. >> there are more engineers per capita than there are in the u.s. and japan. how does that work? it's not a surprise there are a lot of dotcom s and pharmaceutical companies that come out. new app companies that google just bought? i think it's a sharing of the minds between israel and the state of california and clearly governor brown thought why not really capitalize on this relationship? >> reporter: after meeting with brown, the prime minister plans to stop at apple and have a meeting with the what's app founder who recently sold his company to facebook for $19 billion. today's meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. peaceful activists are expected to protest the agreement with brown. they call the prime minister a where criminal because of his policies regarding palestine and they are upset that

california is doing business with israel. we've not seen any signs of protesters out here yet. that could change in the next hour. we'll be out here to update you on the situation. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. 7:41. 1,000 people gathered at martinez junior high school to remember an 8th grade student. the emotional candlelight vigil was to mourn the loss of 14- year-old jenna betti. she was hit and killed by a freight train when she tried to retrieve her cell phone from the train tracks sunday evening. family, friends classmates are stunned by the loss of a young girl who meant so much to so many. >> it's a time to remember her life and who she was. >> jenna was one of the best friends i've ever had. i don't think anyone could replace that. every time you see her, she had

this bright, bubbly smile. >> there will be another emotional gathering in mshz later this week -- martinez later this week. her funeral is set for friday morning. a safety warning in fremont for everyone who uses a popular walking trail in fremont. a teenaged girl said she was aggressively groped last sunday in broad daylight at the alameda creek regional trail near interstate 880. she says was walking down a pathway when a man passed by her and came up and assaulted her. she called 911 and the police started to search for the attacker but couldn't find him. >> i don't know from where that person came from and did that during the day. it's scary. >> police have not received any other reports of similar attacks in the area. the attacker is described as a white man, about 5'10", 185 pounds with a black mustache and beard. he was wearing a royal blue shirt and basketball shorts.

7:41. last night, the hayward city council voted to put a measure on the june ballot that would boost sales tax. if approved, the sales tax would go up by .5% to 9.5%. the measure is expected to bring in an additional $10 million a year to help clear the backlog of projects put on hold during the recession. it includes hiring more police, street repairs and upgrades to fire stations and libraries. city officials say 65% of people in hayward support the increase. 7:42. the golden state warriors may now be shooting for alternative sites for a new basketball arena in san francisco. publicly, the warriors say they are moving ahead with their plans to build a new waterfront april rena south of the bay bridge. however, today's chronicle reports a team is quietly checking out other locations in the city including the main parking lot right across from at&t park. the original proposal calls for

stocks are mixed in early trading. a day after setting a record high. traders unimpressed by a slight increase in hiring in private companies last month. u.s. service companies expanded more slowly in february as hiring levels declined and a cautionary sign for the economy coming out of the winter. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is down 24. the nasdaq, though, is up 4 and s&p is up 1. shares of target are down almost a percentage point this morning. >> the retailer announced that its chief information officer is resigning effective today as the company overhauls its information security and compliance division in the wake of that massive data breach. the executive beth jacob held the job since 2008. target now has openings for

chief information officer, chief information security officer and chief compliance officer. 7:46. a disturbing rise in home burglaries. ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom now to tell us about the local neighborhood that's on high alert. pam? >> dublin police warning everybody in the city about a string of robberies and one very scary incident this week. police say three young men broke into one home monday night while a woman was sound asleep. that woman in the 80s say they tied her up and stole her cash and jewelry. >> there have been some similar residential burglaries. the event was the first event where somebody was home when the intruders entered the house. >> the woman was able to free herself and make it to a neighbor's home. the suspects described in their 20s and driving a newer model dark colored chevrolet or gmc pickup truck.

four other home burglaries happened in the same area of dublin in the past five days. investigators are trying to determine if the crimes are connected. the dublin police department will hold a community meeting tomorrow night at city hall at 7:00. officers want to talk to people about the robberies and preventive measures. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, pam. want to check in with sal, see what's happening on the roads. been quite a busy morning. what's the latest with b.a.r.t.? >> b.a.r.t. is running again. there will be some delays. alex our reporter tweeted trains are unrunning along the line. the bay bridge is a little bit more crowded than normal. it's taking 45 minutes now, the drive between the oakland toll plaza and san francisco. that includes your time on the bridge as well. but again, most of it will be waiting to get on the prige

itself -- bridge itself. this morning's commute has been slow on 880. but farther south, mostly from hayward to fremont, you will see traffic is getting busier on northbound 880 which is on the right-hand side of your screen there. as you look at the south bay, you can see the road sensors are showing 85 to be the slowest highway which is not unusual. it's backed up from 87 into saratoga. 280 is slow before 17 up to a crash northbound 280 near wolf and northbound 101 is slow as well but we haven't had major delays in san jose. this is a routine morning there. 7:49 let's go to steve. a very good cloudy morning. some areas of fog. patrick redwood shores, morgan hill. a lot of high clouds, low clouds as well. not much in the way of rain. a couple of reports of drizzle. a few blips offshore. the main system is still coming in tonight. it's not a big one.

this is a minor system. i'll get ahead of myself a little bit here. sunday looks good for rain. we'll see if that holds and in the 15-day outlook is good. first day of spring could be cold and wet. we'll see. cloudy and mild. here's some fog and drizzle. rain in the north bay and then driving south. maybe late this evening. most of you may get home in the evening before some of that rain moves in. our system continues to kind of track in over us because it's coming up from the southwest helped along by a system which will move up to the north. rain totals won't be that great. they will be a couple 100ths and .5 and .5. the bulk of the system is more show than go. it continues to drive it in.

haven't had much sun. still some offshore. but that needs to move in. that won't for be for a while. mild, mile tropical feel. 50s on the temperatures. might be cool for some. you can see some of that cloud cover and rain staying to the north. that's where the advisories are for the breeze which will pick up. all of this starts at 4:00. northern sacramento valley, i think shasta is up 14 feet. i think that's what i saw since the rain started in february. things are improving for shasta. they have a long way to go. at least it's coming up from the runoff. 41 tahoe. 45 reno. 55 sacramento and also ukiah. 56 to 58 from l.a. to san diego. there goes our system. it continues to draw in a lot of cloud cover. it will be with us all day long. cloudy, rain, late, maybe drizzle near the coast. north bay will be in line for the heaviest. there could be some .5 to over

minister. a caregiver for a mill valley woman is accused of bilking her estate by forging documents after that woman died. gardner is due in court to face several felony charges including elder theft. the marin county district attorney says it has evidence proving she embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars. prosecutors say the money came from the estate of a woman she had cared for who recently died at the age of 93. 7:53. a transgender teenager recants a story about a bathroom attack at hercules high school. the charges the teen could now face. a huge fire stalled traffic on a southern california freeway. how it could affect whether or not you would get -- you get some of your mail.

of mail from southern california won't be getting to their defendant nation after a postal service mail truck caught fire yesterday in orange county. it happened yesterday after the mail truck rear ended another truck on a freeway. 120,000 letters were burned in this. the postal service says there were no registered letters or packages or high value mail in that truck. it was all letters and birthday cards and bill payments. 7:56. fremont police are searching for the man who broke into a grocery store and stole a vending machine filled with lottery tickets. lottery officials released these images from the heist. they show a man wearing a mask pushing a scratchers vending machine out of the lucky grocery store on mission boulevard. the machine was found a few blocks away but was missing most of the cash. some scratcher tickets were taken but lottery officials say the tickets have been flagged and will not earn any prize

money. 7:56. at least two san francisco bars now banned google glass. the latest is the willows in the south of market area. there's signs like this one telling customers -- they say customers don't want to be recorded while they enjoy themselves. so anyone wearing google glass will be asked to leave. many customers we talked to like this policy. >> it made me feel a little bit uncomfortable. you never know if they are recording or not. >> molotov abandoned them. that's where sara said her glass was ripped off her face by another customer. she was able to recover her google glass but said her purse and cell phone were stolen. only on 2 an interview with a local sports hero known for refusing to talk to the media. seattle seahawks marshawn lynch

welcome back to "mornings on 2." you are looking live. a lot of people at the bayfair b.a.r.t. station in san leandro right now. passengers heading from fremont to san francisco were told to go to bayfair because of a deadly accident on the tracks near the south hayward station. about 25 minutes ago, all service was restored. as you see the pictures here, passengers are still gonna run into some delays. give yourself extra time. a lot going on. brian floor press is at the san leandro station with more on -- flores is live at the san leandro station with more on that. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. the other thing we're keeping a close eye on is the weather. steve says more rain headed our way. >> tonight. not a lot. a little bit. there are signs. the extended outlook looks

promising. maybe our march will continue. today it's a lot of cloud cover. might have fog, drizzle. the time line keeps everything in the north bay. it may be as you get home tonight as your drive home, it should be -- i think it's generally the trend is -- the trend is better this evening. the rainfall amounts will be very light. tomorrow looks mostly sunny and warm. the next system will be on sunday. now it's looking pretty good unless there is a hiccup in the forecast. mild conditions, tropical moisture is coming up from hawaii. that system is taking it all in and driving it over us. a lot of cloud cover. you need lifting mechanism to get rain going. there's not much. for us, keep an eye on things, trying to keep up. it hasaways to go -- has a ways to go. overall, not much. 50s on the temperatures. we'll continue to have the cloud cover streaming over us. another cloudy day.

the morning looks like the best bet. afternoon, the better opportunity for light rain to move in. breeze could pick up this evening but points north. 60s to near 70 degrees. here's sal. good morning. we're looking at a commute that has been affected -- we believe it's been affected by some of the b.a.r.t. trains not running earlier this morning or some of the stations not being up is the before way to say it. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. it's backed up. the drive time from the toll plaza to san francisco is about 45 minutes. i do want to mention the traffic has been pretty slow on 880 in the last 15 or 20 minutes getting up. that's 880 northbound you are seeing on the right-hand side. 880 northbound is a little bit slow in san leandro. it really slows down heading up past the coliseum into downtown oakland. 880 southbound is going to be very slow. there was a crash southbound 880 on the vis sin tin of -- i

have sinty of -- vicinity of lieuling. most of this is volume. may have something to do with the b.a.r.t. station. let's go back to the desk. we're about to have more information on this breaking news, sal, and the b.a.r.t. delays. here is a picture of this new video of the first train rolling through the part of the tracks where a deadly pedestrian crash took place overnight. a man was hit and killed by a train around 11:30 last night, causing three stations, including fremont and the south of hayward stations to shut down during a good part of this morning's commute. service was just restored in about the last half-hour. but still, many people who usually rely on b.a.r.t. have been forced to make alternate travel plans and passengers who have gone to stations are still dealing with major delays. brian flores is live at the

bayfair station in san leandro where it's still much busier than normal. no question about that. busy, frustration, confusion. taking a live look now here in san leandro. the bayfair station, you know, we've seen a lot of people get on b.a.r.t. trains as service is being restored. you can still see here not a typical day here at the station both northbound passengers and southbound passengers as you head towards fremont. pretty busy on the platform this morning. it will be like this throughout the morning even though all stations opened about a half- hour ago. as we go to video on the platform, some people were not affected by the delays south of the station. but many people were. a lot of people were running late for work or school or wherever they need to go. what adds to the confusion at least when we arrived at 6:00 was seeing a richmond bound train on the fremont side a lot of people confused about that. the other thing for many, they didn't nope when a san francisco bound train would

arrive. they weren't sure whether to get on the train or wait for a san francisco-bound train to get here. it just added to many commuter headaches this morning. >> it's completely inconvenient. it's something every day with b.a.r.t. >> we pay too much money to catch the train every day and there's a problem and they can't get it together. nobody can get to work. people are relying on b.a.r.t. >> reporter: now, the bayfair b.a.r.t. station was busier than normal. this was the first station for many on the dublin or fremont line. this is where b.a.r.t. was telling people to go. earlier this morning before about half an hour ago, the stations were all closed. haywards with open but because of an unrelated equipment issue. b.a.r.t. was telling people to head to bayfair if they need to get to the city or points in between. as we take it back out here live, another b.a.r.t. train has arrived as we speak.

[chanting] >> now, critics jeered in city council chambers after that vote approving the domain awareness center. it's described as a 24-hour emergency operations facility. it will be a central base for collecting information from the police surveillance center and shot spotter system. opponents fear it will be used to spy on people. mayor scwaun voted -- quan voted for measures only at the port of hoekd and not the entire -- oakland and not the entire city. there is a stunning new development in this week's

reported hate attack on a transgender student at a hercules high school. the freshman student born a female but identifies a male said he was sexually assaulted by three boys in a school bathroom but now admits he made up the entire story. investigators still don't know the reason for the lie and the student could face charges of filing a false report. however, the school board president says this false alarm could still prove to be a wakeup call with a district with a troubled history. >> we have bullying. we do have harassment. we do have individuals who get confronted every day with unwelcomed responses and behavior. we need to look into that. >> just last month, teachers at hercules high overwhelmingly approved a vote of no confidence in the school's principal. that vote came in response to complaints of a lack of safety on campus that had led to fights and arrests. 8:09. happening today, a lawyer for the family of lynn spaulding will file a claim against the

city of san francisco. she went missing from her hospital room at san francisco general hospital on september 21st. her poddy was found in -- bonddy was found inside a -- body was found inside a locked stairwell 17 days latter. the filing today -- later. the filing today is the first step in a normal lawsuit. it appears the world's largest light sculpture will continue to shine on the bay bridge. tara moriarty has more on the plan that will be announced later today. >> reporter: a lot of us have to then used to the l.e.d -- gotten used to the l.e.d. lightings. what if they weren't there? tomorrow night at 7:00, they will go out for ten minutes just to give you an idea of what you would be missing. it's all part of a fund-raising effort by bay lights. the 25,000 shimmering lights are evenly supposed to run for

one more year but bay lights is announcing it will raise $12 million to keep the bulbs burning from 2016 to 2026. we asked people if they think it's worth the money. >> the $12 million seems like a large amount spread over ten years, it's not that much across the city. so i think they would be worth keeping. >> reporter: waterfront businesses have noticed a 10% spike in sales since the lights went up. perhaps they will be contributing toward the fund- raising efforts. private donations are being accepted. caltrans is gonna remove the lights next month. then stronger l.e.d. bulbs would be installed, ones that would better withstand the harsh weather. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:11. b.a.r.t.'s response to a deadly accident in hayward. really upset passengers. >> this is ridiculous and

b.a.r.t. needs to get it together. we pay too much money for this to go on every day. every day it's something. >> the action that b.a.r.t. did not take that made passengers upset. a new twist to a murder investigation in oakland. the connection a burned body has to another possible murder at that exact same location. it's still a little bit low out there in some spots especially as you approaching the bay bridge. as we look at the south bay, traffic is improving on one of the freeways. it would be nice if we could get rain. we still need it we're running out of time. there's some on the way. how much? we'll have the details.

8:15. gay couples can now legally get married in illinois. the state's toiferm says county clerks across illinois can immediately start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. that's even though the state law legalizing gay marriage doesn't take effect until june. the attorney general gave the go ahead after studying recent court rulings in the same-sex

marriage battle. we're learning more about a burned body found in oakland. the body of richard fang was found saturday near an apartment complex on 34th avenue. this is the same apartment complex where 77-year-old susan fong was killed last month in a home-invasion robbery. neighbors say susan fong was richard fang's aunt. she also owned the building. and he was the property manager. 8:16. a petaluma police officer still recovering after a scuffle with the man suspected of trying to break into cars. now, it happened yesterday afternoon in the parking lot on eli boulevard. police say the suspect appeared to be on drugs during a violent struggle with a police officer who was trying to take him into custody. both that officer and the suspect were injured. that suspect is now in jail facing felony charges. the san jose city council has rejected a proposal that could have provided more money for the police department. supporters of the proposal wanted to put a measure on the

june ballot that would ask voters to increase police spending from 30 to 40% of the city budget. may off chuck reed led the fight against the idea. he said it threatened other public services like the fire department, community centers and libraries. global climate change could impact your favorite dip. the restaurant chipotle says the change in weather patterns led to an increase in the cost of avocados. that means it might start leaving guacamole out of its burritos and bowls. it could also affect one or more of their salsas. chipotle says it uses about 97,000 pounds of avocados each day and it might not be able to stomach the extra cost. it says the price do go up another key ingredient with cheese, tomatoes and beef. california has its first licensed ride share company. state regulators granted a permit to the company called

summon which previously operated under the name insta- cab. it's not as well known as uber, lyft and side car. but the company says it has several thousand drivers in san francisco, the east bay and south bay. they work with cab drivers and private individuals. all of its drivers pass criminal background checks. 8:11. an online dating site is solving a common problem for women in new york and men in san francisco. the dating ring says there are too many single women in new york and not enough in san francisco. so it plans to fly eligible young bachelorettes to san francisco where dateable men will be waiting for them. right now, the site is raising money to pull this off. interested women could pay $1,000 for a guaranteed trip or $20 to compete for other spots that get funded. interested men just have to pay $20 to participate.

>> very interesting. >> okay. >> new twist to that. >> yes. 8:18 is the time. let's check in with sal. see what's happening on the roads. how are things looking on 280. >> they are better. i think some of our viewers who work in the -- or live in the south bay will be happy about this. 280 is better. there was an earlier crash on 280 just a little bit up the road. northbound 87 at kurtner there is a crash. northbound 280 just before bird, there was a crash here. you can see it on the maps. but the good news is -- i think there's a couple of viewers who hate 85 commute. look at this. the road sensor is not showing us much of a commute here. if you are coming in from southern central santa clara valley, i would say that's a pretty decent commute. 101 is very slow in sunnyvale as you can see as i draw the arrow on the red sensors. let's take a look at the bay bridge. we always watch this this morning we've had a little bit

slower than usual commute. kind of like yesterday, we had a 45-minute drive time between oakland and san francisco. 8:19. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. cloudy skies even some fog, low clouds, some high, mid-level clouds. looks like a cloudy day. there's not a lot here. some kind of being picked up by radar offshore. i doubt that amounts to anyone. maybe a little drizzle here. some rain to the north. but this system is all arriving late tonight into tomorrow. today, cloudy skies. rain to the north. rain totals would be a couple 100ths to maybe .5 for the bay area. farther north you will get heavier amounts. sunday looks to be on track for clouds increasing and rain developing. again, the focus looks to be the farther north. here's some of the projections through saturday morning. there won't be anything friday or saturday. saturday looks warm. not a lot. a couple 1 huntths. keeps stacking up and adding up. and if the 15-day outlook is correct which would be the

first day of spring. it looks cold and wet. a lot of cloud cover over us. not much in the way of sun. but it's still going to be a mild day. lake county, there will be heavy rain especially up near crescent city and also eureka. but for us, we're on the southern edge of all of this. some of this might give us light rain here. 54 seems popular there. concord is in there. antioch, livermore, san jose, walnut creek. who else? that's it. half moon bay 54. everyone is kind of stuck on the temperatures just due to the cloud cover. the nature of it cloudy up in tahoe and truckee. drizzle, light rain, fog along with the cloud cover. not much in the way of sun. there are wind advisories that start at 4:00 for lake tahoe, northern sacramento valley and up north. but nothing for us. 56 ukiah. 57 sacramento. a balmy 43 up in tahoe and 61 in san diego and 60 in los angeles. chowk will keep us gray skies today. cloudy with the rain coming in later this afternoon and

evening. i think even the majority of you should get through the evening commute dry unless you are heading north then you will have to encounter some -- 60s to near 70 degrees on some of the temperatures. again, these are above average. but just due to the cloud cover. not much is going to change accept santa clara valley morgan hill and gilroy. it will be mostly sunny after morning clouds. thursday, friday, saturday look good. rain on sunday. 8:22. on the hunt for the man who attacked a woman on a popular walking trail in fremont. what the suspect looked like and the safety warnings some of the residents have not heard about. where you can see an award- winning film about and a bay area man who became a hero during 9/11.

we'll bring you the latest in a live report coming up at 8:30. we have more to tell you about, about a murder-suicide at a nursing home in san francisco. it happened monday night at the central gardens nursing center. police say a 60-year-old woman shot and killed her 93-year-old mother before killing herself. we don't know their names. they haven't been released yet. police also have not released any information about a possible motive. 8:26. the u.s. navy's newest ship is paying tribute to the men and women who lost their lives on united flight 93 on september 1 1-g9. the somerset is set to be fully commissioned on saturday in philadelphia. the ship carries a sign that reads "let's roll." that place was used by passengers as they prepared to storm the cockpit and stop the terrorist takeover of flight 93. the plane crashed into a field in somerset county, pennsylvania and the navy ship

headaches this morning. ktvu's alex savidge is there. he'll have more on this breaking news on what's happening with b.a.r.t. stay tuned for that. wednesday morning, march 5th. i'm dave clark. let's talk about your weather and traffic now. steve is over there. >> we do have cloudy skies. mark out in pleasant hill said signed of misty and damp -- kind of misty and damp. there's drizzle, misty. gonna be cloudy. rainfall totals will be very light. most of this won't amount until much until tonight. heaviest amounts will be to the north. those won't be that much. moisture is coming up from the southwest. there's a system right there which will sweep into the north which will help enhance that a little bit but that won't be until this evening. until then, look for a lot of gray. there's a little bit of round. mendocino county, lake county, around clover deal, healdsburg but i doubt it's doing too much. a little bit picking up here. misty, drizzly, but a gray day.

50s for many here. they've been there all morning long. some echos starting to pick up offshore as well. some of this will start to drive in a little later. very light rain but more likely this afternoon and evening. and then tonight, the front will finally make it through. rain to the north. kind of drizzly, breezy. drizzly? i think you get what i'm saying. 60s on the temperatures to near 70 degrees far south. here's sal. >> we have problems in marin county an overturned injury accident on northbound 101 right near the tiburon exit. traffic is slow coming out of corte madera. but southbound traffic is going to be busy because people are taking a look at the crash. also a crash eastbound 580 at seminary this noncommute direction, traffic in the commute direction may be affected by it as traffic is slow on the lakeshore curve. 880 slow from slnd -- san

leandro. as we move to the east bay, contra costa county, northbound and southbound 680 slow through walnut creek getting down to danville. the nimitz freeway is backed up from 238 a couple of minor wrecks. traffic times 24 from pleasant hill to the tunnel, 15. 880 from 238 to fremont. 27 minutes and then the traffic is going to be slow as well. 8:33. now quickly to the toll plaza. that's up 45 -- that's a 45- minute drive time. if you are driving that commute has picked up on northbound 280. let's go back to the desk. 8:33. more about the breaking news about braurt. b.a.r.t. says there are 10, 15-minute delays because of last night's deadly accident on the tracks and then the service disruptions this morning. alex savidge is live in hayward. you have all of the latest details on that accident investigation. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. trains are returning through this area between the fremont

and the south hayward stations. we're watching them move through this section of the track here. this is where that accident happened late last night. this is where a person was struck and killed by a train. in hayward here, close to industrial parkway. that's where we are. earlier this morning, the coroner came in and removed the body of the victim in this case. it was a man who has not yet been identified fid by authority -- identified by authorities. he has hit by the train. the train was headed north at the time approaching the south hayward station. the train involved had 11 passengers on board at the time. none of them were injured in this crash. all of the passengers were interviewed by investigators and they were put on to another train to keep on going. b.a.r.t. doesn't know what -- [inaudible] >> reporter: a short time ago, a spokesman talked about why this investigation streach -- stretched into the morning

about a thousand people gathered at martinez junior high school last night remembering a popular 8th grade student. the emotional candlelight vigil was to mourn the loss of 14- year-old jen new betti -- jenna betti she was hit and killed by a freight train sunday evening when she tried to retrieve her cell phone from the tracks in martinez. family members, friends, classmates, all were stunned by the tragic death of a young girl who meant so much to so many. >> this is a time to remember her life and who she was to each of you. >> jenna was one of the best friends i've ever had. i don't think anyone could replace that. every time you would see her, she had this bright, bubbly smile. >> there will be another ceremony in m martinez later this week. her funeral is scheduled for friday morning. the safety warning is being irked for everyone who uses a popular walking trail in fremont. a teenaged girl said she was

aggressively groped last sunday in backyard daylight at the trail near 880. she was walking by when a man walked past her and came by and salted her -- assaulted her. news of the assault had not filtered out to many of the people who use the trail. >> i don't know from where that person came from and doing that during the day. it's scary. >> police have not received any other reports of similar assaults in the area. the man is described as white, 5'10", 185 pounds with a black mustache and beard. he was wearing a royal blue shirt and basketball shorts. happening today, the israeli prime minister is here in the bay area. he will meet with governor jerry brown in about two hours in mountain view. some protesters are there as well. they say they have a message for the prime minister.

ktvu's janine de la vega is joining us live to tell us why the prime minister is interested in technology and business here. >> reporter: good morning. israel is tech savvy. it's known as startup nation. there are more engineers there per capita than there are in the u.s. and japan. and given that information, governor jerry brown wants to capitalize that and he thinks a partnership between israel and him will be beneficial. that's why they are meeting here today at the computer history museum. now, this is video of prime minister benjamin netanyahu earlier this week when he met with president barack obama in washington, d.c. he stopped in l.a. for a document documentary premiere. there are a number of areas the leaders want to focus on, they

include water conservation, alternative energy, cybersecurity, education and agricultural technology. >> israel is a nation that has no natural resources, only 8 million people. how is it more than 60 companies, foreign companies on the nasdaq, are israeli companies? it's fascinating to see what we could learn from israel and i think that's where governor jerry brown is going with this but also what israel could learn from us. >> reporter: after meeting with brown, the prime minister plans to stop at apple in cupertino and also have a meeting with the what's app founder who recently sold his company to facebook for $19 billion. today's meeting with the governor will begin at 10:30 a.m. there are peaceful activists who are protesting benjamin netanyahu's agreement with brown. they showed up here this morning. they are calling the prime minister a war criminal because of his policies regarding

palestine. they are upset that california is doing business with israel. again, they are outside the front. so far everything is peaceful. they are holding up a lot of signs as you can see. but we're still waiting the arrival of the prime minister here in mountain view. reporting live from mountain view, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:40. a string of home-invasion robberies in one bay area city. coming up, pam cook tells us why the most recent crime is getting so much attention. >> reporter: and confusion, frustration and hopefully a little bit of patience for commuters. we'll tell you how the braurt delays are affecting the morning commute. we're still looking at roads in the east bay that are very crowded including the drive to the san mateo bridge. once you get on the bridge, it does look good. we'll give you an update on all of the crowded east bay freeways getting to this point. a lot of cloud cover over us. some misty conditions maybe some drizzle out there. we have to wait for the rain this evening. it's on its way.

one day after s&p 500 surged to an all-time high with its biggest gain since october,

stocks are changed. one report shows that u.s. companies added slightly more jobs in february than the previous month. the dow is currently down 35. the nasdaq is up 1. and s&p is flat. 8:43. let's bring you up to date some some of the other top stories we're following for you. b.a.r.t. says an unidentified man, a trespasser was hit and killed by a b.a.r.t. train last night. the b.a.r.t. stations were closed overnight as police investigated what happened. bart is all -- b.a.r.t. is calling it an unattended death. no witnesses and no signs of foul play. and then the later service disruptions, caused a lot of delays throughout the morning. look at all of the people packed on the braurt areas there -- b.a.r.t. areas there.

brian flores is live at the bayfair station. people have been jammed there. >> reporter: jammed and scrambling. the piece of good news, dave, it appears that things are looking back to normal here in san leandro at the bayfair b.a.r.t. station. but what a frustrating day for many commuters. as we mentioned about an hour ago, service was fully restored to all stations but the fact that three stations were closed early this morning caused many commuter headaches. as we go to video, we saw a lot of people running up the stairs trying to figure out when the next train would arrive. that's because fremont, union city and south hayward stations were closed as police gather evidence from a man that was killed on the tracks. what made matters worse was an unrelated equipment problem that caused delays from the hayward b.a.r.t. station. many people were already running late for school or work or whereeverrer they needed to

go. >> the trains are running. i'm trying to get to my program. it's the blaur in oakland. i think this is a menace. look at all of these people. we're trying to get to work. this is ridiculous. >> reporter: the bayfair b.a.r.t. station was busier than normal. this was the first transfer station for many passengers on the dublin or fremont line. this is where b.a.r.t. was telling people to go when there were delays. other agencies like a.c. transit could not provide a bus bridge because there was not enough personnel ready in a short period of time. we saw people scrambling to get to the bayfair station. as we take it whack out here live -- back out here live, service is restored. it looks like things are getting back to normal. more people on the platform. but as we mentioned, a 10 to 15- minute delay on the fremont line. be patient out there. we're live in san leandro, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you.

8:46. four robberies in five days. pam cook is in the newsroom with the local neighborhood's effected. >> dublin police are warning people to be on the lookout for the men who broke into a home tied up an 80-year-old woman and stole her cash and jewelry. now, it happened monday night. police say on serado street. four other home burglaries happened in this same area of dublin in the last five days. the other robberies happened when no one was home at the time. but dublin police say on monday night, three young men broke into one home while an 80-year- old woman was sound asleep. >> at that point, they tied her up and demanded cash and valuables. they rummaged through the house and then fled the scene. now, she was able to get flee and make it to a neighbor's home. police say video surveillance show the men may be in their 20s and driving a newer colored

dark colored chevy or gmc pickup truck. investigators are trying to figure out if the crimes are connected. they are holding a community meeting tomorrow night at 7:00 at dublin city hall. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:47. let's bring sal back. taking care of our friends in oak -- in oakland. >> i'm trying to. we're looking a a commute -- at a commute that will be affecting commuters. you can see here, this is 880 northbound on the right-hand side. it's creeping along past the coliseum. i want to show you a map. and you can seep how the road -- see how the road sensors are telling the same picture. it frees up before you get to the brick wall at 23rd. there is a crash eastbound 580 at seminary. westbound 580 is the best way to get to oakland. look at 680.

we have a long line of slow traffic out of walnut creek. there's a new crash near crow canyon road that's made a mess of the late morning commute there. we also are looking at 880 southbound. that's improved a little bit. we had a couple of crashes on the way south. traffic is still affected by a crash. northbound 101 near seminary. look at the drive time here for 880. still 23 minutes from san row len zoe 880 south to fremont -- san san lorenzo south to fremont. 45-mint drive time from the toll plaza. brick the good tunes -- bring the tunes -- bring the good tunes. a little mist out there. mist or drizzle. some of the rain is staying to the north. it will for most of the day. fog, drizzle, cloudy, rain to

the north bay and then tonight it moves south. won't be heavy. we'll get something out of this overnight into tomorrow morning. there's plenty out there. the system today. rain totals, i will show you those in a second. sunday in between, though, i mean, friday slurt saturday. clouds -- friday/saturday. clouds. one of the little nuisance systems really. a lot of cloud cover could be a few breaks in the clouds. santa clara valley, i went 70, morgan hill and gilroy. a couple of returns. no big deal. there's maybe a little drizzle here up north. hardly anything as well. it's a sign of things to come with a cloudy pattern. 50s on the temperatures. coming up from the southwest as all of this moisture -- it's not a cold system whatsoever. the cloud cover will continue to be with us all day long kind

8:5 4. continuing coverage of the crisis in ukraine. secretary of state john kerry is in paris at a meeting foal cussed on finding a diplomatic solution to the tensions between russia and ukraine. this is new video of secretary kerry at the meeting this morning. also there diplomats from england and france. russia's foreign minister will meet with kerry later today. there was one surprise guest at this morning's meeting. the new ukrainian foreign minister. he traveled to paris with kerry from ukraine. he said he had hoped to have a chance to speak directly with

russia's foreign minister. 8:54. fretmont police sill stoisming for a man who broke into a grocery store and stole a vending machine filled with lottery tickets. lottery officials released these maim images from saturday's heist. they show a man wearing a mask pushing a scratchers' vending machine out of the store on mission boulevard. the machine was found a couple of blocks away. it was missing most of its cash. some of the scratcher tickets were missing but lottery officials say those tickets have been flagged. only on 2, an interview with martian lynch -- marshawn lynch. he talked to us. the seattle seahawks and former cal stair marshawn lynch talked exclusively to ktvu about the incredible highs and the lows of his life. froing up in north -- growing up in north oakland, he saw his friends killed when he was only 5 years old.

now he's helping children through his nonprofit first family foundation. >> i just hope i can give them a sense of hope, you know, something to believe in, something to have faith in. >> now, every july, marshawn lynch holds a football camp. his other goals include expanding his foundation and finishing college with a degree in social welfare. the northern california couple is getting good news about the gold coins they found on their property. the coins have an estimated value of $10 million and date back as far as the mid 1800s. there was speculation the coins may have come from a 1901 theft at the u.s. mint in san francisco. if that was true the coins would become evidence and become confiscated. but yesterday u.s. mint officials announced there's no apparent link between the coins and the theft. the coins will be auctioned off in late may or early june. the couple says they will donate some of the profits to

charity. the rest will allow them to keep their property which is pretty cool. >> yeah. they will have to give some to taxes. >> yes. >> the irs gets a chunk of those coins. a lot of cars on the road out there. >> that's right. we still have a big delay. there's a report of a stalled a.c. transit on 80 at the -- at ashby avenue. i want to look at the map here. there it is. you can see it in the fast lane. westbound 80. that bus is stalled out. traffic is backing up. if you go to the bay bridge toll plaza, it's about a 45- minute wait. maybe a little bit less. i see more movement. maybe 35 minutes. there is a crash in oakland on 580. it's causing a delay coming out of san leandro. now let's go to steve. all right, tu. a lot of cloud cover. maybe mist off drizzle. foggy conditions. some rain is coming in light.
