bay. i can show you there's not a lot of red. hayward to fremont, a little bit of slowing. the drive time between hayward and fremont is aboutsome -- is about 14, 15 minutes. a lot of traffic is transferred to pittsburg and bay point. 680 from concord to walnut creek is not bad, and 80 with slow traffic into richmond. let's look at drive times. the bay bridge, 25 minute drive time from oakland to san francisco. and also looking at 280 in san jose, it is nice looking drive from downtown into the west valley. 7:03. let's go back to the desk. thanks sal. we begin with developing news from hayward. two huge fires just a short distance apart this morning. the most recent fire started about 2 hours ago. ktvu's alex savage was covering an apartment house fire on 7th

7th street when he smell smoke from the carport fire. our crew raced to the scene to get incredible pictures and we just spoke to fire investigators in hayward. 9 cars were either damaged or destroyed. the carport fire created tense moments also for people living nearby. >> it was extremely frightening. i was shaking. i didn't know what to do, and my roommates like leave before everything blows up. it was so scary. >> there are no reports of injuries. crews are still on the scene trying to determine the cause. as we mentioned that r carport fire, it was right near another fire in hayward that started late last night. a child is among the people who barely escaped the fast moving flames from an apartment fire. it's been a very busy morning for hayward fire as well as ktvu's alex savage. alex joins us live with reaction from firefighters and fire victims. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you and we spoke to this little

boy who was rescued from last night's fire. he is doing well this morning. one of his grandparents dropped him out of a second story window at this apartment that caught late last night. he was caught by his great aunt who was waiting down on the ground below. >> what happened last night? >> i jumped out the window. >> you justified? was it it scary. >> reporter: that's 3-year-old maurice. he gave us a smile even though he was worn out after a long night. he had to be taken to the hospital to get checked out. his mom told us he was not hurt during the fall. he was sleeping at his grandparents apartment last night when the place started burning at 11. it's on 7th street near c street and the only way for the family to get out was through a second story window, a 25-foot drop down to the ground below. the boy's grandmother and grandfather, they were injured when they made that jump from

the second story to escape the smoke and flames. >> she hit her head on the ground. she has like four stitches and her pelvic bone or something is broken. other than that she's fine. my step dad, he broke his ankle. the boy's grandmother and grandfather are still in the hospital this morning but i'm told that they should make a full recovery from their injuries. last night's fire appears to have started in the kitchen of this second story apartment. investigators don't believe it's suspicious, but the place was gutted and the family will have to find another place to live for the time being. live this morning in hayward, alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. time now 7:06. in just a couple of hours from now, 14-year-old jenna betty will be laid to rest. she was killed sunday evening by a freight train passing through martinez. police say the 8th grader ran onto the tracks to pick up a cell phone she had dropped. this morning's funeral starts at 10:30. it will be at christ the king

church in pleasant hill. happening today, a state senator is about to unveil audrey's law. it's legislation cracking down on cyber bullying. tara moriarty joining us live from saratoga now where some people say the current law isn't tough enough. >> reporter: the santa clara district attorney says the perpetrators of sexual assault cases in juvenile court receive sentences that are too short and the punishments are toilinet cent. we know two -- too lenient. two of the boys involved are still students here and they were sentenced to 30 days in juvenile hall and a lot of that was done on the weekend. audrey pots mother is saying that's like serving saturday detention. the new law would make the punishments stiffer. three bodies admitted to taking half naked pictures and sexual assaulting audrey pots in 2012 at a drunken house party when

she was passed out. the photos were shared via text. that week pots sent out a facebook message. my life is ruined. i'm in hell. my life is over. she committed suicide one week later. students who worked for the school newspaper here did investigating and found that at least 10 people saw the photographs. the law would make it easier to charge in adult penalty and would make cyber bullying a crime when photos or electronic messages are used to embarrass harass or intimidate others. the law would require a 2/3 vote to pass. legal analysts say it has a chance. state senator jim bell. santa clara county district attorney and audrey's mother will unveil the law at 9:30 at the town library. live from saratoga, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. 7:08. two teenage boys are being investigated in connection with with last month's water bottle attacks. they threw water bottles from a

pickup truck and as many as 10 vehicles and two school buses. this happened in and around santa rosa and injured several people. they identified the boys by finding the owner of the pickup truck. neither suspect is cooperating. it is 7:08. a group of senate democrats in sacramento calls for strict new rules to make it illegal for state lawmakers to except free tickets to concerts and sports events. some of the free tickets reported by state lawmakers last year include a performance by a hip hop dance crew at a las vegas casino, disney land and a mixed martial arts fighting event. the senators sponsoring the rule say they are trying to regain the public's trust. the state lawmakers who accepted the most free guests, east bay assemblyman, rob bonta. phil tang, 14900 dollars.

and luis. now to the drought here in california, the alameda county water district considering enforcing one of the toughest water restrictions in the bay area. the argus is reporting the board may declare an emergency water shortage next thursday. registrations would include limiting irrigation and also banning homes and businesses from watering lawns on consecutive days. punishment for violations may include fines, maybe even jail time. but that would be in the most extreme cases. water district officials say they doubt if that would ever happen. 7:10. uc berkeley says it's having trouble to admit enough minorities to reflect the diversity of the community. cal officials blame proposition 209, the 1996, voter approved ban on affirmative action for their struggles. uc officials say the percentage of latino and african-american californians being admitted has

plummeted from 46% before prop 209 to just 12% right now. they also say top minority candidates are getting generous scholarship offers from private schools and choosing to go there instead. uc berkeley officials recently filed a brief in connection with to a u.s. supreme court case involving minority admissions at the university of michigan. time is 7:11. some of the biggest names in music and movies, they're going to be in san francisco next week performing at a special benefit concert. it's all to raise money for ucsf and a special camp for children with life threatening illnesses. the long list of stars scheduled to be there includes jackson nickelson, annette being and bonnie raitt. sunday streets kicks off its 6th season this weekend in san francisco. the car free event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. this sunday along the

embarcadero. i want to ride one of those. the planned activities include free rentals and tune ups, rock climbing and face painting. the street events will be held in 9 locations around the city. it was started in 2008 to encourage people to get out and be physically active. it's not the only place to have fun out streets in the bay area. weather will not be a problem for tonight, first friday celebration in oakland. thousands of people are expected to attend the monthly music and art festival. last month's event, though, was rained out. the street festival spans a 5 block area in downtown oakland, and it features local artists, musicians and gourmet food vendors. 7:12. it wasn't quite what he expected but bat kid did get his night at the oscars after all. 5-year-old miles scott and spiderman actor, andrew garfield took part in a mini oscar ceremony. they were in an la hotel room.

time is coming up on 7:16. the two men who pled guilty to boating giants fan brian stow are facing federal charges. a grand jury has indicted marvin norwood and louie sanchez for possession of firearms, those weapons include style rifles. these new charges could add to the prez time. last month, norwood and sanchez pled guilty to the attack at dodger stadium that almost killed stow nearly 3 years ago. the case of a 16-year-old boy accused of setting another teenager on fire on an ac transit bus is headed to trial. prosecutors say richard thomas set 18-year-old sasha

fleischman's skirt on fire last november. the incident was caught on bus surveillance video, and thomas' attorney says that footage may play a key role in his defense. thomas is being tried as an adult facing charges that could land him in prison for life. >> time now 7:17. celebrating its 15th birthday, fan tech firm sales force feels it's better to give than to receive. and they plan to feed the hungry. there's a free concert today featuring the singer janelle monett. people coming are asked to donate canned goods or help pack 15,000 meals that will go to the san francisco food bank. the volunteering starts at 11 this morning. the city of san francisco is getting close to creating a new source of affordable housing in one part of the city. the planning commission approved legislation to build in law units. they're the small apartments,

often built in the converted garage, in storage areas or in attics. many people in san francisco have been living illegally in inlaw units. 7:17. a canadian couple experienced the dangers of distracted driving firsthand after a bad accident was caught on their dash cam. this driver mounted this camera inside his car to catch anyone who may be trying to break into his vehicle, but little did he know it would capture an accident, boom, right there that sent him and his wife to the hospital. you can see the couple driving on the road, but all of a sudden a truck pulls out, and they hit. now, you look closely here. you can see the video shows that other driver on his cell phone. he was charged with failing to yield to traffic, and he admitted it was his fault. she said that right away, it's totally my fault, but the camera proves it. just have to be really careful. >> that's incredible. i jumped. time now 7:18. let's check in with sal.

you're watching the roads. >> fortunately we don't have anything like that to report. we have calm traffic. it's busier. this is the peek of the commute, and we're looking at interstate 80 east shore coming in from richmond, slowing from berkeley to the mcarthur maze. when you get to san francisco, you will see slow traffic coming up to the bay bridge toll plaza. as a matter of fact, this delay is a 25 minute drive time from oakland to san francisco. not too bad. we had times that were almost double that. right now it's not that way. we talked about 80. i'm going to push down to the south bay here, and we can look at san jose. we haven't had a lot of slow traffic and highway 85, this will make many viewers happy. 85 this morning in the south valley. only a little bit slow after 17. 7:19. let's go back to steve. >> hold on there. beautiful shot. shot. some patchy low clouds around. a few high clouds over all. partly sunny. temperatures chillier this morning, much cooler. we have a mostly sunny day on

7:24, an extradition hearing is scheduled for los angeles for a former probowl football player, accused of drugging and sexual assaulting two women. 38-year-old darren sharper has been jailed in southern california since last week. he's wanted in louisiana in on assault charges. acquaintances say sharper admitted to them he had sex with the women without their consent. investigators suspect him of raping at least 9 women in 5

states since september. dramatic surveillance video could be used as evidence against two men in a string of armed robberies in the south bay. the video shows a masked gunman terrorizing a liquor store and shooting his weapon into the air. detectives say the two men hit about 20 stores and shops since december. investigators caught the suspects last week by examining crime patterns and staking out several likely targets. >> the suspects seem to be wrapping up their level of violence, and we know that robberies of this type will continue to ramp up. >> a surveillance camera on a sheriff's department helicopter photographed officers chasing down the suspects. they're being held in the santa clara county jail. detectives say they're looking for possible suspects, witnesses and victims. time is now 7:25. there's a new documentary about a 9/11 hero. it was shown to a sell out

242 to 24, about 12 minutes. still not a bad commute. let's look at live pictures now. westbound bay bridge of 25 to 30 minute drive time into san francisco. san jose hasn't been that bad. northbound 101. you can see it's moving along nicely approaching the 880 interchange and toward the san jose international airport. the time, 7:32. let's go back to the desk. thank you sal. we begin the half hour with a developing story we're following in the south bay. a house fire where two people were critically burned and it's now the scene of a criminal investigation. ktvu's janine de la vega is live at the home with what she's just learned about this case. good morning janine. good morning, we're told by the fire captain that the arson investigator did search in and around the home, and did not find any bodies there. but we are still waiting to hear what triggered the investigator to call this a crime scene. earlier we were told that she interviewed the two people who were in the home when the fire started. they were taken to the hospital and the information that they

gave her, that's what prompted the change. this is a cell phone video taken at about 3:45 this morning, when the fire started. you can see flames in the back of the home, and smoke billowing from the roof. firefighters say it appears a back patio structure caught fire. it collapsed when firefighters tried to enter it. the flames spread to the home and destroyed several rooms. a man and a woman who were inside the house escaped through the garage. both are now suffering from severe burns. they were rushed to the hospital. and neighbors described what he saw. >> they came running out the garage. they were just screaming and yelled to call the fire department. they weren't that bad. they were still walking, but you could see one of them was holding their arm and crying. >> reporter: there are metal security bars on every window of the home, and firefighters think that they may have prevented the victims from getting out of the house quickly. firefighters say they weren't used possibly because the

victims couldn't see them because the smoke was so thick, and that's what led to them getting badly burned. fire investigators have been collecting evidence. we have seen police going door to door talking to neighbors. we just saw a spokesman from the fire department arrive on the scene. he's talking to others and we're hoping to get an update. more details on why this is a criminal investigation coming up in the next hour of mornings on 2. reporting live from san jose. janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. 7:34. learning new information about the man found dead inside his berkeley apartment last week. police say the victim was 54- year-old sylvan fuselir suspected of being the notorious bandit because he used polite notes to rob east bay businesses. he was found dead in his home during a welfare check by police. there's no word on how he died. but a $15,000 reward for any

information leading to the arrest of his killer. time now 7:34. san francisco is considered one of the most walkable cities in america. but with the recent rash of pedestrian injuries and deaths, city leaders want more to be done to keep walkers safe. ktvu's brian flores joining us live in the city, what do they plan to do? >> reporter: good morning, there was another pedestrian accident not too far from here. one person in the hospital as a result of that, but we are on vanessen bush, this is one of the busier intersections and city officials have seen way too many pedestrian accidents and fatalities last year and this year. they say enough is enough. what they plan on doing about t they announced during a press conference. they will spend $17 million in pedestrian safety products in the city over the next five years. it's called walk first, which is a city initiative aimed at combining collision data with public outreach. it has identified 170 locations where improvements need to be made over the next 5 years.

city officials say the majority of pedestrian accidents happen in the tenderloin, soma and north beach neighborhoods: there were also 21 pedestrian deaths last year. 5 already this year, and we're just in march. city officials say this has to stop and people heading to work this morning agree. >> there's more misses and we with never hear about them, so for me, i think if you can lighten up, brighten up, reflect the intersections more, and i think pedestrians has to take a responsibility also as far as when they, you know, just don't step out checking facebook. >> however, we have a problem, and the problem is that people are getting killed and seriously injured in our streets. and that shouldn't be happening. >> now, some of the recent projects that will be improved upon for example, call for traffic light timing changes on suddenner street and installation of a traffic light. and even though 17 million was announced for improvements, an

estimated 240 million total is needed to complete all proposed pedestrian improvements in the city. city officials plan on asking the voters for more funding in november. police chief greg sur noting that pedestrian involved accidents and fatalities have become a problem as we take it out here live noting that during the press conference there have been nor pedestrian deaths than homicides in the city. he'll be telling his officers to be better enforcers on the streets as well. live in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you brian. it is 7:37. four suspected armed robbers are in jail this morning accused of terrorizing a bingo hall in s&l claire. the bold crime happened -- santa collar ray. the bold crime happened on martin aver. the suspects pretended to be bingo players for several hours before suddenly pulling out guns and grabbing a huge amount of cash. witnesses say at one point they attacked a 78-year-old woman

for her winnings. the arrests have not made the bingo players feel any safer. >> there's too much money involved. for our protection as bingo players, they should have armed security. >> police say the woman attacked in the bingo hold up was pistol whipped and there's no word on her condition. >> time now 7:38. students and staff at a school in oakland, they are heartbroken after thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of computers it happened earlier this week at juaquin miller elementary school. the thieves climbed over a fence, smashed a window and escaped with $35,000 worth of computers. >> it's a shame that people feel like they have the right to come in to a school and rob children of their technology or anything that supports their education. >> three years ago, volunteers helped raise money to buy the 25 imac computers. a lot of the students school work were on those computers. >> it is 7:38.

last month we told you about water leaking into the new eastern span of the bay bridge, and now we're getting a close look at those leaks. engineers found 900 leaks and they say a gasket behind these bolts could allow water in if not properly tightened. water could also be seeping in through tiny cracks in the caulking near the steel traffic barriers. bridge officials say dehumidifiers could guard against the leaks and keep it safe. there are five dehumidifies placed in various locations. >> it was lights out on the western span of the bay bridge as the light show known as the bay lights marked its first anniversary. you see the lights being turned off. the 25,000 lights went dark for 10 minutes to give viewers a chance to reflect on the impact, the piece of public arts it had on san francisco. the lights are supposed to it

stocks wavering between small gains and losses early this morning. taking a live look at the big board. the dow is up 59. the nasdaq though, is down 7 and s&p is up 2. now, what investors are focusing on this morning, the february employment report that was released two hours ago, and the new numbers were better than expected. economists worry that the big winter storms across most of the country would have a negative impact on the numbers but the labor department says employers actually added 175,000 jobs last month which is up from 129,000 in january

richmond schoolteacher accused of child abuse. on wednesday police arrested ron ginto while he was teaching 7 7th grade students at his new job at richmond mira vista school. he started working there months after being fired from a charter school. ktvu news what has learned that that firing came while police were investigating charges that ginto had sexually abused several students during camping trips and he reportedly was getting ready for another overnight trip with students when he was arrested. >> something that wasn't disclosed was that in two or three weeks, he was going to take a group of kids on a field trip overnight to yosemite. >> while the school board president is promising to improve the school district's background checks and the response to all the anger over this case. there's concern and confusion over the announcement that the owner of albertson's is buying safeway. we're told the safeway name will not be going away, and

lower deck, you can kind of see the bottom there were, and as you can see -- there, and as you can see the sky way is a mess, eastbound, trying to leave. if you're in san francisco, and jj you can go ahead and go fast up to 101 if you can, that's 280. pan to the right, and that would be, there we are. there's 101. thank you very much. you can see how bad it is coming up to the 80 split, and this is because of a crash with the car that was briefly on fire and flipped over. use an alternate route. use the san mateo bridge. -to-try to get across the bay or use b.a.r.t. use an alternate. i wouldn't recommend this right now. looks like a bad afternoon commute on this morning, unusual traffic. we're going to stay on top of it obviously. let's move along and look at the san mateo bridge. we had an earlier crash westbound. eastbound is clear if you want to get to the east way that way. and traffic at the bay bridge. this has been steady and slow. and by the way, the westbound commute, it is not affected by that crash we just mentioned on the lower deck on the san

doing well this morning. we talked with him and his mom. he was rescued from this apartment fire last night by one of his grandparents who dropped him from a second story window after this place caught fire and he was caught by his great aunt. who was waiting down on the ground below. >> reporter: what happened last night? >> jumped out the window. >> reporter: you jumped. was it scary. >> it was a scary time for 3- year-old maurice. he cracked a smile for us this morning even though he clearly had a long night. he had to be taken to the hospital after the fire to be which he could -- to be checked out. he will be heading home now. he was sleeping at his grandparents apartment last night when the place caught fire around 11. this apartment is on 7th near c street. the only way to get out for the family was through a second story window. this was a 25-foot drop.

the boy's grandmother and grandfather were injured when they made same jump. they jumped from the second story window just trying to escape the smoke and flames. >> she hit her head on the ground. she e has like four stitches and her pelvic bone or something is broken but other than that she's fine. my step dad he broke his ankle. >> the boy's grandmother and grandfather still are hospitalized this morning, but they are expected to make a full recovery. this fire appears to have started initially in the kitchen of this apartment unit and investigators say at this point it does not appear as though it was suspicious. but the apartment itself was gutted by fire, and this family will have to find another place to live, certainly they are grateful that everyone including that cute little boy, that 3-year-old boy maurice survived last night's fire. we're live this morning in hayward, alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. time is 8:05. in just a couple of hours from now. 134-year-old jenna betty will be laid to rest.

the junior high school student was killed sunday evening by a freight train that was passing through martinez. police say the 8th grader r ran onto the tracks to pick up a cell phone she had dropped. this morning's funeral starts at 10:30. it will be at christ the king church in pleasant hill. it's 8:06. a state senator is about to unveil audrey's law today. it's legislation aimed at cracking down on cyber bullying that played a role in saratoga high school student's suicide. tara moriarty joins us live, where some say the current law is not tough enough. >> reporter: audrey pots family says that the boys who sexual assaulted their daughter and took photographs of her without her knowing received a punishment basically equivalent to saturday detention, and two of the boys still attend saratoga high school. their sentence was 30 days in juvenile hall and the pots family says, you know, that is

not enough. they have also blasted state laws that allowed the boys to remain anonymous and treat sex crimes more leniently if the victims are passed out and don't resist. this new law would make the punishments stiffer. the three boys admitted to taking photographs and sexually assaulting classmate audrey pots in september of 2012 at a drunken house party. the photos were shared via text. that week, pot sent out a facebook message that said my life is ruined. i am in hell. the whole school knows. my life is over. pot committed suicide one week later. students who work for the school newspaper here did investigating and found out 10 people saw the photographs. audrey's law would make the crime easier to charge in adult court with harsher penalties and would make cyber bullying a crime, a felony in some cases. it requires a 2/3 vote to pass. the district attorney and audrey's mother will unveil the law at 9:30 this morning at the

town library. live from saratoga, i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. thank you tara. it is 8:07. two teenage boys are under investigation in connection with last month's water bottle attacks in sonoma county. the chp says the boys threw water bottles from a pickup truck at up to ten vehicles, including two school buses. the incidents happened in and around santa rosa and injured several people. investigators identified the boys by finding the owner of the truck, and they say neither suspect is cooperating. >> time is 8:08. well, analysts looking at governor jerry brown's propose budget, they're questioning why the chp needs to buy 26 new airplanes and helicopters. the nonpartisan legislative analysts office recommends freezing any purchases until the chp explains why it needs aircraft. the chp says the current fleet is old and needs to to be replaced.

governor brown asked for $16 million to replace two chp planes and two helicopters. >> 8:08. now to the california drought, despite the recent rain, the alameda county water district is considering enforcing one of the toughest restrictions to date in the bay area. the argus is reporting that the board may declare an emergency water shortage next thursday. restrictions would include limiting irrigation and banning homes and businesses from watering lawns on consecutive days. punishment for violations may include fines and possibly even jail time. but that would be the most extreme cases and the water district doubts if that would ever happen. california may soon be getting relief from the record breaking drought. climbing experts predict the warming of the pacific ocean, known as alanine -- as el nino.

alternate. another traffic update is just minutes ahead. thank you sal. it is 8:14. a 17-year-old boy from danville was reportedly driving more than 100 miles per hour when he was killed in a crash on highway 24. the chp says the teen lost control of his car near pleasant hill road in lafayette around 11 yesterday morning. as you can see, the car was completely destroyed. it hit a sign and went down an embankment. a witness says he saw the teen racing another car before the crash. the victim's name has not been released. police in san mateo say social media and two brave kids helped them catch an accused child predator. the police posted an alert about a man asking a 15-year- old girl for sex on north claremont street. two 12-year-old girls saw the alert and the man's photo on facebook and identified the suspect as roberto guadalupe

you can see they're out there. look at 101 northbound. it's jam packed all the way back from the 280 interchange as we pull back. this is a world of hurt. this looks leek friday afternoon commute trying to get over to the east bay. the alternate route is using the san mateo bridge eastbound. that looks good. remember, westbound the san mateo bridge stinks, but eastbound it's okay. as a matter of fact, can we go to the map, you see how terrible the san mateo bridge is. a separate problem westbound has made it terrible from hayward over to the peninsula. you know, going this way, not too bad getting to the east bay. got that. look at the san mateo bridge, you can use your own adjective for this. not good. let's go to steve. sunshine for some. high clouds for others. there you go. and some patchy low clouds. over all, still mostly sunny today. probably some partly cloudy more favoring the north. cooler lows. mostly sunny and not much change into the saturday. spring forward on the clocks there or your smart phone.

thank you for that update. we'll bring you more details as we move along. welcome to friday, march 7th. i'm dave clark on mornings on 2. let's check weather or traffic. we know about our forecast. >> thank you, we have some mostly cloudy skies to the north bay, and mostly sunny to the south. a pretty good system offshore and the bulk of its headed north, and mostly sunny today. fog, chilly lows carry that right into saturday as well. sunday, though, we will see increasing clouds. slight warm up today, tomorrow, and then temperatures will drop off as the clouds roll in. a pretty good system. there's plenty here. and it's moving well to the north. it will take a while to get here. maybe late saturday we'll see increasing clouds to the north and sunday looks like a cloudy day. 40s on the temps. much cooler temperatures this morning. 30s and 40s more so than the 50s the last couple of mornings. we lost a lot of cloud cover, even though there's some dragging across. mostly sunny, chilly morning, some fog.

a lot is burning off. mostly cloudy to partly cloudy, and more sunshine later on. 60s mainly on the temps. here's sal. we had slow traffic, not only on the bay bridge but also on the san mateo bridge. we're going to start there. traffic on the bridge is going to be busy trying to get over to the peninsula, look at it on the right hand side. it is creeping along because of an earlier crash on the west end of the bridge. the entire span is slowed. normally it takes about 10, 15 minutes to get across the bridge. this morning double that. half an hour, at least. bay bridge is not too bad of an alternate. it's backed up for about a 25 minute drive time between oakland and san francisco. but now we have a problem going the other way. northbound 101 getting onto the lower deck of the bay bridge. there was a crash on that lower deck. brian flores is live from one of the onramps to the bay bridge, and brian, traffic there doesn't look good. >> it doesn't, sal. the good news though, a silver lining on this friday is the fact that we got word from chp,

all lanes are clear. as we mentioned this is more like an afternoon commute as opposed to a morning commute. we're on the 5th and bryant onramp onto the foot of the bay bridge. you can see traffic building up here. as we're approaching on bryant, a lot of people trying to get to the bryant and 8th street onramp. traffic was building up. people took bryant all the way down here, and obviously the onramp traffic onto the bay bridge is not getting any better even though all lanes were clear. as we look at chopper 2, a better look at traffic approaching the bay bridge. that traffic goes all the way on 101 as you approach the bay bridge. this was a two car collision, accident that happened on the bay bridge, just about 20, 30 minutes ago. involved an suv, and a honda civic. we understand that this was an injury accident. we don't know the extent of the injuries, and again, chp has cleared the scene, all lanes are open. as we mentioned, as we take it back out to our live shot on 5 5th and bryant. traffic on the onramp, approaching the bay bridge, still pretty heavy at least for

the next few minutes. be patient out there this morning, and again, looking like an afternoon commute as opposed to a morning commute. we'll keep you updated. live in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. time is 8:336789 we're still following developing news in the south bay, a major house fire sent two people to the hospital with critical burns. ktvu's janine de la vega is at the home where the folks, are being, well this home is being treated at a crime scene. >> reporter: the fire department has decided that it wants to team up with police for this investigation. so it will be joint. now, a fire spokesman told me the reason they're handling this as a crime scene is because of the severity of the injuries of the two people who escaped. he's some cell phone video from a neighbor taken at 3:45 this morning when the fire started. you can see flames in the back of the home, and smoke billowing from the roof. firefighters say it appears a back patio structure caught fire. it collapsed when firefighters tried to enter it. the flames spread to the home

and destroyed several rooms. a man and a woman who were inside the home escaped through the garage. both are suffering from severe burns and were rushed to the hospital. an arson investigator interviewed the victims there. >> the swear i it -- severity of their injuries, the time of morning, and, you know, both of them, suspicious injuries. we didn't hear any smoke detectors going off or anything like that when the crews arrived, so we have to just make sure that we play this very cautiously. >> reporter: there are metal security bars on every window of the home, and firefighters think that may have prevented the victims from getting out of the house quicker. there were release bars they could have used but firefighters say they weren't used possibly because the victims couldn't see them because the smoke was thick. fire investigators have been collected evidence. we have seen police going door to door, talking to neighbors and we know that authorities are monitoring the condition of those two victims that were we're told are in the burn unit. new information we also

maids bingo hall. they pretended to be players for several hours before suddenly pulling out guns and grabbing a huge amount of cash. witnesses say at one point they attacked a 78-year-old woman for her winnings. she was pistol whipped. there's no word on her condition. time is 8:37. a person is in the hospital this morning after being hit by a car last night in san francisco. now, it happened on van ness and turk street. police say the person was hit. we don't know their name or we have no other details right now. the investigation continues. now, the latest accident comes as the city of san francisco's getting ready to spend millions of dollars to make it safer for people to walk the streets. yesterday there was a presentation of recommendations from the walk first initiative. san francisco's police chief says pedestrian safety must be a top priority this year. >> year to date, we have had more people killed on the streets of san francisco in vehicle collisions than we have

by homicide. it is a problem. >> so far this year, five pedestrians have been killed in san francisco. safety plans are calling for $17 million to be spent to improve 170 locations around the city. it is 8:38. students and staff at a school in oakland are heartbroken after thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of computers. it happened at juaquin elementary school earlier this week. investigators say thieves climbed over a fence, broke a window and made off with about $35,000 worth of computers. 3 years ago, volunteers helped raise money to purchase the 25imax. most of the students -- imacs most of the computers school work were object on the computers. former girlfriend of oscar pistorius testifying in his trial this morning. this is video of pistorius arriving at the courthouse. in the courtroom, a former

tuned sal will have the details in a couple minutes. meantime, firefighters in hayward had a very busy past couple of hours. flames engulfed this carport. this was on b street. it damaged or destroyed nine cars, about 5:00 this morning. no one was hurt. that fire was just a short distance away from a late night apartment building fire. it was especially frightening for a 3-year-old boy who was thrown to safety out of a second story window. ktvu's alex savage is there in hayward. you talked to that cute little boy after he was reunited with his mother. good morning alex. good morning to you, dave. that little boy is doing well. all things considered this morning after a very scary night. he had to be rescued from this apartment fire in dramatic fashion. one of his grandparents, especially saved a little boy's life. he dropped the child from a second story window here at this complex that had caught

fire and dropped into the waiting arms of his great aunt who was standing down below on the ground. it was to say the least, a frightening experience for 3- year-old maurice. we talked to him this morning. he had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out but his mom tells me he is doing well. he was not hurt during the fall. he was sleeping in his grandparent's apartment when the place caught fire at 11. this place is on 7th street near c street, and the only way for the family to get out was through a second story window. all the other exits were glock. this was a 25-foot drop. and the boy's mom talked about the dramatic rescue. >> he jumped from the window and he said my mom was sleeping on the ground outside. that's what he said. that's all he said. >> reporter: did he say he was scared? >> u. and when i got home from the hospital, he was like ready to come to me. >> reporter: as for the boy's grandmother and grandfather, they are still hospitalized this morning.

they suffered broken bones and other various injuries when they also jumped from that second story window to escape the smoke and flames last night. they should make a full recovery, though. this fire appears to have started in the kitchen, according to firefighters and investigators say at this point it does not appear as though it was suspicious, but the apartment itself was simply gutted by fire. there's no way anyone can live here. this family will have to find another place to live for the time being. they are grateful that everyone survived. live this morning in hayward. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:47. be safe or get off the road. that's the mandate from the agency that over seas the ride sharing industry. ktvu's pam cook is in the studio with more on the letter to uber and other local companies that's ahead of the game. >> yeah, today a letter will be sent to uber saying that the company has 60 days to meet all safety requirements to get the permits it needs to stay on the road. now, similar letters were sent

bay bridge and all around there. >> that's right. i want to show you a video that was someone who works here driving from san francisco to oakland took of the crash as she was driving across eastbound. first of all, she was getting onto the bridge in a world of hurt here. and then eastbound traffic came to a stop at the crash. and i think we have a little bit more of the crash scene. maybe we don't. maybe this is all that we have here. the lower deck of the bay bridge, getting onto it from san francisco, right now is terrible because of the crash. the crash is clear though. san mateo bridge, west 92, that crash was cleared a little while ago. the bridge is beginning to get a little bit better, if you can wait a while, must be better before you cross the bridge. eastbound san mateo does look good. dumbarton is a good alternate to everything. it looks light. patchy low clouds, partly

investigation into bay area cold cases of murdered women dating back to 1976. federal agents and police were reopening an investigation into the unsolved murders of six women. the fbi is forming a joint task force to investigate the so called gypsy hill murders. five women were killed in san mateo county. there was a 6th victim in reno. one woman was convicted in that case. now we have learned dna belonging to a man connects the six murders. the task force will start canvassing neighborhoods in the peninsula looking for leads. 8:55. there's concern and confusion over the announcement that the owner of albertson's is buying safeway. we're told that the safeway name will not be going away and it's popular rewards program program will remain at least for now. although albertson's says there are no plans to close stores, a business expert tells ktvu she
