good evening, everyone. a manhunt underway after a san francisco police officer was shot and wounded during some kind of a confrontation in the city's mission district. this is a live view in daily city where a vehicle believed to be used in the shooting was found abandoned. police officers have closed several streets, including the area around the mall as they continue their search for the gunman. you can see the locations where the police are investigating. they're searching for the shooter near interstate 280 and daily city, where the car was found, but the shooting was around florida street, not far from the hospital. that's where we find patty. >>reporter: we're live on florida street. you can see it's still blocked off, and just down the street

is where the 28-year-old officer was shot around 3 this afternoon. we're told that he and his partner were responding to a call about malicious mischief. here's what a witness saw. >> we were just sitting on the stairs and i heard four or five shots go off. >>reporter: there was a squad car. >> i saw blood on the squad car and a policeman down right by the rear driver's side tire holding on and blood coming out. >>reporter: within minutes the san francisco neighborhood was warming with officers, but it's not the only crime scene. officers had tracked the

suspects. streets still blocked off in the area as investigators from all over the bay area tracked down their suspect. >> in the middle of this manhunt we have the officer just down the street at san francisco general hospital undergoing surgery as we speak. the chief says it's a miracle that he survived this close range shot. he credits the fast response by the fire department and other officers for saving this officer's life. >> our crew just got back from that hospital, and the police chief gave this update on the officer's condition. >> he was stabilized and conscious before taken into surgery to repair a vascular injury to his left shoulder, but he should be okay.

signal from the plane. >> the 239 people onboard seemingly vanishing into the pre-dawn sky, including three americans, one adult and two children. rescue crews following two large oil slicks near the gulf of thailand where they believe the plane may have gone into the water. >> the u.s. navy has agreed to assist in search operations. >> the vessel is a navy vessel that is sent out to help search. meanwhile family and friends of those onboard can do nothing but wait. >> some people are crying, some people checking information on their phones. there's nothing in these rooms except for water and bread. >> several agencies reporting that two of the passengers onboard may have been traveling

>>reporter: they also keep hiring new officers while avoiding layoffs. >> i think that also plays into it, the fact that we have officers on street and officers getting hired and still actively recruiting. >> i hope we get better, better than what it is right now. >> police know they have a long way to go, but they hope little things like this mixed in will continue the downward trend of crime for the rest of the year. oakland police are investigating a deadly car crash. the victim's family tells us it was a hit-and-run. it happened at about 11:30 this

morning near 98th and plymouth street. police reported that one person died at the scene and at least one other person was injured. the family says a 38-year-old was the one killed. they say a third vehicle caused the accident and that the driver drove away and that a passenger ran off. we'll have much more on this story coming up tonight on the 10:00 news. fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a deadly house fire that broke out just before 2:00 this morning. so far no word on the identity of the person killed. new at 6, something you don't get to see every day, an underground tour deep below san francisco. it shows how long the project has come since the digging began last spring. the subway tunnels are more than halfway done. >>reporter: noisy and dirty,

a florida mom who drove her mini van into the ocean with her children inside was in court today. the 32-year-old was charged with three counts of attempted murder and abuse in volusia county. earlier this week police said the pregnant woman intentionally drove her van into the ocean with her three children. bystanders rushed in and helped rescue the children from the vehicle. the kids are now in protective

custody. bay area protesters joined a nationwide campaign aimed at getting a fired whole foods worker rehired. they say the grocery chain fired a chicago mother who took time off to take care of her special needs son after winter storms closed down schools. >> basically she was fired because she wanted to take care of her kid. i believe that women should be able to stay home and take care of their children when they're ill and not be fired or retaliated against. >> we give plenty of fair warning. there's lots of conversation that happen leading up. it's never a surprise to a team member when they're separated. >> organizers of the protest also gathered signatures hoping to apply pressure to get the woman's job back. a man broke into a restaurant and stole the cash

register. a burglar got away in possibly a nissan path finder. he's described as 6 feet tall with a mustache and a noticeable limp. a rare sight on the bridge this morning, no traffic because of a movie shoot. you can see there's a helicopter hovering right there on the right. that apparently was part of the film crew. the highway patrol couldn't tell us why the closures were not made public ahead of time. we first heard about it from viewers who told you us about unusually heavy traffic around the bridge for a saturday morning. with a peace flag waving high, antifluke /he activists gathered today to remember the nuclear power plant in japan
