injures officer, patti. >> reporter: with the suspect so quick to open fire on an officer, now on the run, police evacuated these apartments and shut down these streets for hours. they re-opened them only in the past 45 minutes after they were certain the suspect wasn't here. s.w.a.t. teams moved into the neighborhood just before 8:00 tonight, part of a multiagency manhunt that shut down several blocks in daly city with a man abandoned his car after shooting a san francisco police officer. >> it's very scary, very, very scary. >> they don't know where he is at. he might be inside the apartment. >> reporter: the officer was shot miles away in the mission district around 3:00 this afternoon. >> on the stairs here, i heard four, five shots, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. >> are the witnesses race over toward see one officer trying to staunch the blood of his fellow officer. >> i saw blood on the squad

car and the policeman down right by his rear driver's side tire holding on and there was blood on the sidewalk. it was a bad sight. >> reporter: police chief greg suhr says the officer was shot as he walked to the car and the other officer shot back. >> the passenger officer fired upon the suspect vehicle in defense of his partner. >> reporter: police tell us that they know who they are looking for. >> there is a vehicle involved and we know who the register owner of the vehicle is. >> reporter: he they just haven't caught him at. at 9:00 street closures were lifted and people allowed to return to their homes, but the search for the shooter is still on. the injured officer is 28 years old and he a 6-year veteran of the san francisco police department. he is in stable condition at san francisco generality hospital and he expected to recover. live in daly city, patti lee

gathered in the west oakland neighborhood where they grew up, as soon as they heard she was gone. >> i saw her dele days ago and just did her hair a week and a half ago. >> ward was the passenger when it collided in the intersection of plymouth and 98th avenue. she died on impact and witnesses say the other driver ran way and a third car involved also drove away. >> she whereas my best friend, my everything. we went through it all. whoever did it just turn yourself in, because that is the saddest tragedy we have ever. just leaving the scene, that is not right. >> she was a good person. everybody loved her. >> reporter: felicha had five children. >> she always had a smile and something nice to say. >> reporter:

relatives say cory singleton underwent surgery at highland hospital. oakland police haven't confirmed that they are looking for a hit-and-run driver or drivers, but the family says ward's mangled car speaks for itself. a mother, alive and vibrant one moment and her life taken the next. >> she just ran off and left my cousin dead like that, it makes me very angry. i can't do anything about it, but just give it to the lord. >> reporter: felicha ward worked as a home health aide, but she was into party-plan and more than anything, friends say had he she was proud of her kids. reporting live in oakland, debora villalon ktvu . we have new details on a deadly fire in oakland. fi was reported about 2:00 a.m. in the 200 block of santa clara avenue. fire officials tell us that the fire was accidental, caused by cooking. the victim was a 32-year-old

man who may have fallen asleep without realizing the kitchen was on fire . new developments as the search continues into the baffling disappearance of a malaysian airline flight over the gulf of thailand. tonight the search for the plan haze widen as members of the u.s. national transportation safety board are heading overseas to help try to determine the fate of that boeing triple-7 and the 239 people on board. within the last hour malaysian authorities say they are looking at the possibility that flight the could have turned back, expanding the search area. while the mystery of what happened remains tonightses we are getting a clearer picture. the flight manifest shows three americans, a 51 -year-old ibm executive and two toddlers, one 4 and the other 2, it's not

clear who the children were traveling with. two passengers were traveling with stolen passports. however, law enforcement officials say there is nothing at this point to indicate foul play on their part. the new york times reporting that pentagon surveillance data shows no evidence of an explosion in the air where that plane disappeared. for families of those on board, most of whom were chinese, this is agonizing. wracked by grief and fear they came to the airport in beijing, ushered into hotel rooms, family and loved ones, wait for word of explanation, words that so far have not been offered. >> some people are crying and some are taking information on their mobile phones. there isn't anything in the room beside water, biscuits and bread. >> the arrival board said that it was delayed, but in actuality it vanished. the plane lost contact two hours after it left kuala lumpur after it passed over the coastal town of kota bharu.

drought there is reports tonight that more than 255,000 homeowners and businesses in california do not have water meters. according to an analysis bit san josi mercury news those who pay a flat rate for water use 39% more water per capita than the state average. currently more than 40 communities across the state don't have water meters and under current state law those communities have until 2025 to become fully metered. some people in the bay area took part in the nationwide campaign over the firing of the whole foods worker. volunteers passed out fliers at three whole food locations across the bay area, including one in berkeley. they say the grocery chain fired a chicago mother who took time off to take care of her special needs son during snow- day school closures. >> basically she was fired because she wanted to stay home and take care her kid and i believe that people should be able to stay home and take care of their children and not be fire order retaliated against. >> no team member would be

. continuing coverage on a major project happening deep below san francisco's streets. today we got an up close work on the central subway system. massive digging began last spring and as ktvu's john sasaki shows us that the turns are more than halfway done. we rode the amusement -style transport 100' below the city's streets. >> there is about 40-50' of water pressure above us. so we're literally constructing a tunnel underwater. >> reporter: the central subway tums have been under construction since last may and already the sections stretch 9500 total feet. >> this is a long-awaited

the construction time. under san francisco john sasaki ktvu channel 2 news. the san mateo bridge was briefly shut down this morning between 9:30 and 10:00 for a movie shoot. there is a helicopter hovering above the bridge and apparently that was part of the film crew. the highway patrol says why we didn't get any word about the closure and we first got word from viewers about the unusual back-up on a saturday morning. in the north bay highway patrol officers arrested a suspected drunk driver after a head-on crash that happened this morning at about 9:30 on river road. police say 25-year-old joseph torres iii of stockton was speeding up to 100 miles per hour the nissan hit a toyota corolla. torres and his passenger and the toyota driver were all hoppized torres was arrested on suspicion of felony dui. a trial has been ordered for a man who allegedly killed

a nursing student. 21-year-old kristina chesterman of livermore was struck while riding her bicycle near the campus of chico state university. the contra costa times reporting that 20 -year-old riley dean of ohio was ordered to stand trial in her death. fibers were identified from the hood of his suh that experts say matched chesterman's clothing. the man who inspired the three strikes law is chasing a third strike himself. he faces a life sentence if convicted. walker was involved in the 1992 murder of a fresno teenager, but got a plea deal. the victim's father pushed for the three strikes law. walker pled not guilty to his current charges on friday, the 20th anniversary of that law. a pastor in upstate new
