gave the okay to start tearing apart the structure and put out the fire. >> reporter: the battle to put out the worse fire in two years entered its second day with the focus on taking down chunks of the building -- chunks of the building. it went to fire alarms, engulfing the apartment complex in a sea of flames and smoke that could be scene for -- seen for miles. crews pour water on the building for 24 hours now. >> it is like 3 collapse. i am not a engineer but given the amount of fire damage and water being applied, it weakened the structure further. >> the top four stories collapsed. it forced firefighters to abandon truck number 8. it was recovered today. investigators welding work done in the area may have started the fire.

engineers this afternoon began bringing in equipment to tear down sections on the ledge of collapse. >> it will be two days worth to get the collapse hazard squared away. >> reporter: the owners said we are assessing the situation, including the cause of the fire, we believe any losses caused by the fire should be covered by insurance. 172 apartments were destroyed, at 6:00 p.m. the fight to keep the hundreds of thousands of gallons of water from polluting the bay. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and another live look now from news chopper 2 of the apartment complex. crews are slowly starting to dismantle this building, what is left of it because they don't want it to collapse.

firefighters as you heard said that will take about two days or so. live pictures of what is left of the huge apartment complex in san francisco. >> neighbors are waiting to get back into their homes. one neighbor watched as the warm building burned. ktvu's ann rubin spoke with neighbors about what it will take for them to get back in. there is damage to the buildings. the problem for residents is the instability of the one that burned. they can't come home till at least part of this comes down. >> reporter: windows shatters. sprinklers went off upstairs. the apartment building managed to survive yesterday's massive fire across the street. >> flames shoot over. >> so did his store on the first floor. >> yesterday when i walked away i thought it would be gone. >> the flames were just feet away. but firefighters managed to put

up a protective curtain of water and this is the store today. >> i was very lucky. blessed. >> reporter: considering this is what the fire looked like from their windows. today they were able to retrieve belongings. inside it smells like smoke but it is the structure across the street they are worried about. the manager across the street they are assessing the situation there. >> every apartment will be inspected. >> reporter: also saved is his car which was parked in front of the building. he says he can't thank the fire department enough. >> incredible, amazing job. thank you so much san francisco fire department, you are the best. >> reporter: some residents grabbed belongings to last them three days.

still no official word on when they can go home. one bit of good news, the buildings may work out an agreement so people can stay in units that are not yet leased. ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. >> embers from the fire sparked another one a block away. firefighters responded quickly to put out the fire before it could spread. >> san francisco mayor ed lee says a water system was crucial to keeping the fire under control. >> but for the water pressure system this fire would have been perhaps very hard to contain. and that water pressure allowed for so many of the 150 firefighters to have the apparatus, to have a system work in their favor. >> we are working to learn more about the strategy the

firefighters used when it comes to battling high rise fires. details coming up at 6:00 p.m. we watched the fire from all angles from the air and on the ground as the flames ripped through the building last night. the smoke could be seen from miles away and a lot of viewers sent us pictures. this one, you can see the black and the white smoke coming from the building. another angle. you can see the firefighters hose pouring water on the flame. and a time lapse of the fire. you can see the jet black smoke get thicker and thicker as the fire continues to spread. after 90 minutes the flames and the smokeb start to die down -- smoke start to die down and you can see the color go from black to white as firefighters start to get control and bring the fire out at the apartment complex. if you want to see more images we created a slide show on

8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. and that is when the strongest winds hit the bay. east bay hills as well, wind gusts over night 59 miles per hour. as you look here and see 34 miles per hour winds at crissy field, 36 richland. you are getting a northeasterly wind, creates a lot of chop. the winds died down. the winds right now out of the north, northeast, fairfield 18. that is a gust to 26 down there. gusts to 20 in caw cord. the advisory -- concord. the advisory is down. this wind is warming us up. the air is sinking. as we go into the next 24 hours, we will warm further. there will be sinking air that could allow us to see temperatures into the 80s. which day that could happen. back here after the break.

the fbi says it has evidence that one of its most wanted bay area terrorism big island. daniel andreas san diego was indicted in 2004. investigators say they believe he is responsible for two pipe bombings in 2003. one he has been on the run from law enforcement for a decade. in december the fbi offered a $250,000 reward for informationing leading to his capture -- information leading to his capture. man is targeting young girls girls and touching them inappropriately. today police released this sketch. the most recent incident happened friday on 28 avenue and east 17th street in oakland. ktvu's allie rasmus shows us how parents are taking action. >> reporter: it has been a day of action for concerned

developing news now, chaos in manhattan after two buildings collapsed following an explosion. >> all of a sudden a explosion goes off. boom! >> three people are dead. 60 other are injured and authorities think death toll will go higher because several people are still missing. in east harlem with late information on what happened and what is going on there right now. steve? >> reporter: yeah. it is nearly 10 hours after the explosion and the two buildings collapsed and search still goes on here. happened at 9:30 a.m. in the morning. the ground shook for blocks. it may have been fueled by gas leak, a natural gas line leak here. in addition to the three deaths confirmed we have crews behind

us searching through a pile of rubble. 9 people are still inaccounted for. -- unaccounted for. >> reporter: wednesday morning a deadly scene. fire crews and the bomb squad water called out after an explosion caused two buildings to collapse in east harlem. >> st. sounded like -- it sounded like a bomb or something went off. and it kind of shook, shook us. you felt the ground shake. >> reporter: these pictures show where the buildings used to stand and the debris field on a rail track. >> this is a tragedy of the worse kind because there was no indication in time to save people. >> reporter: officials aren't sure what caused the explosion but they say 15 minutes before the blast, residents here reported the smell of gas and called con edison but it was too late. >> con edison dispatched a team

immediately to respond. the explosion occurred before they arrived. >> the blast shook the entire neighborhood, damaging several buildings. many people felt it 7 blocks away, some were frantic in the after math. >> it was a big boom. a loud explosion. >> it was so powerful that you heard the boom and it rocked the apartment. >> reporter: 39 fire department units, 168 firefighters and a drone controlled by a civilian responded to the explosion. but the investigation into what happened is only just beginning. as you can tell from the smoke that is still rising from the rubble, firefighters are still dealing with hot spots here. it took them a long time to put out the fire this morning. the bulk of the fire. they are still dealing with flames 10 hours later. in new york, ktvu channel 2 news. all around the bay we showed you wind damage and now

the video he uploaded to youtube. he said we could show it to you. you can see the heavy damage the fire is causing and the flames ripping through building. firefighters say at this point the cause of the fire, the official cause is still under investigation. live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the statistics surrounding the fire are impressive. half of san francisco's fire department arrived, 100 personnel. in all 47 different vehicles and ambulances, engines, suvs and fire trucks arrived and the public utilities commission says since the fire started two different water pumping stations have been pump null hundred gallons of -- pumping 200 gallons of water to the fire. that is 500,000 gallons of water used. we have been invited here by the tenants.
