let's send it back to the desk. >> happening right now a group of students continue to occupy the administration building. we want to show you people who spent all night last night outside the building. this follows a violent confrontation between protestors and police yesterday. this is youtube video of police trying to keep protestors from entering the building yesterday. the protestors are demanding the resignation of special trustee robert agrella. >> we wanted to bring tax to the fact that we feel our school and our ability to have equal access to an education is being attacked. >> some of the students say this afternoon they will join a rally at san francisco city hall. the rally is to show support by

resolution of david com pose to reinstate the city college part of trustees. last year the board of trustees was stripped of its power when the special trustee was installed. ktvu news will stay on this story and bring you updates online and on the air as soon as we get them. also happening right now hayward police are investigating a large marijuana grow following overnight house fire. katie utehs is live in the neighborhood with some new information from a neighbor about that house. katie. >> reporter: the neighbor i spoke with she didn't want to go on camera but she tells me she is not surprised that firefighters stumbled across marijuana in this home. people in her 20s did not frequent the home. within the last hour narcotic officers have arrived on scene. they are currently in the house taking pictures and securing the plants. they must be moving the plants, because just got a fresh whiff of the breeze and it smells like there is a lot of plants

inside. someone called 911 around midnight to report a fire on the roof. nobody was home at the time and when firefighters got inside the home, they found the marijuana and since then officers have been on scene. they have told us there are quote a lot of plants inside. but again narcotic officers inside the home securing the plants and we hope to get an update on just how many plants are inside and who may billion connected to this home when they finish with their search warrant. live in hayward katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. this weekend volunteers in santa clara county will mark a tragic anniversary. it has been two years since high school cheerleader sierra lamar vanished while heading to a bus stop. torres is in jail charged with her kidnapping and murder. dozens of dedicated volunteers

have spent the past two years looking for her remains or anything that might provide a clue in the case. they will hold a special ceremony in honor of sierra during her search in the morgan hill area this weekend. investigators trying to determine what caused part of a home to collapse. it happened last night on myrtle street. firefighters say one wall of a two story victorian home under going renovation somehow caved in. the debris fell on another house next door and buried a truck parked in the driveway. no one was hurt but the city has roped off and red tagged the house. convicted felon is scheduled to be arraigned this season. surveillance video shows the arrest of 50-year-old jeffrey ruano early sunday morning. he tried to back his car into two officers the day before in san francisco. officer adam shaw was shot in

the arm during the understand accident but san francisco police say it's possible that shaw's partner may have accidentally wounded him during the chaos. general david petraeus is paying a visit to stanford. protest evers will also be on hand at petraeus' speech. just about an hour from now the head of the u.s. air force appears at a congressional hearing to discuss the lean defense budget. it doesn't effect any major effects from military budget cuts in the coming year. reportedly the only change at travis would be transitioning four c-5 galaxy jets to back up inventory status. that means they will not be

fully funded or manned and available for missions only when necessary. the proposed defense budget could mean the loss of more than 1700 jobs at beal air force base near marysville. the budget calls for ending funding of the ux-2 spy mission at beal along with about 41 other aircraft. that could result in the loss of a quarter of the jobs at beal. a sexting scandal at several bay area schools has at least one student facing possible criminal charges. that student is also accused of using photos to blackmail another student into performing sexual acts. christina is live where it happened. >> reporter: we are finding out this boy attends adams middle school. and he used these photos of a girl to blackmail her into performing sexual atacts with him.

this case came into the hands of police after a girl confided into an adult with what was happening. the sexting was going on at two other campuses here in the city. police found more than 12 boys were sending and receiving inappropriate messages at adams. now everyone involved including the victim we are told is between the ages of 12-14 and despite their very young ages that they are facing serious consequences. >> we have been able to establish there were acts of sexual conduct that took place during that threat that was made. >> reporter: and we know late last night police were still questioning teens involved in this case. they were also going through confiscated cell phone to see what else they could piece together. and it's unclear who exactly will be facing charges. that is something police are talking with the contra costa county da's office about.

ktvu channel 2 news. happening today parents and students plan to protest the firing of at least two math teachers in mill valley. parents say the teachers were fired after refusing to attend training sessions for a new teaching method. but the district says that was not connected to the decision to dismiss the teachers. protest is scheduled to get under way at 7:30. it may come as a surprise for some but a new survey finds muni riders are generally satisfied with bus riders. they rank services good or excellent. just 9% say they fair or poor. this morning if you are a soccer fan you can buy tickets to see the san jose earthquakes play at the brand new 49ers state yum. they will be hosting the seattle sounders at levi stadium on saturday august 2nd. the tickets go on sale at 10:00 this morning. the game will be the first major sporting event to be held. tickets start at $45.

that is much cheaper than what you would pay to see the 49ers pay. 6:10 is the time. big blow for san jose airport. the reason virgin america is booking a one-way ticket out of town. and it's like a video game designed to prevent a real life tragedy. the high-tech help first responders in one bay area city will have when responding to school emergencies. we're about 30 minutes to an hour before we reach the heart of the morning commute but so far so good as we look at the richmond san rafael bridge. traffic is flowing freely through there. >> we had major hot spots yesterday. well for this time of year with upper 70s to near 80.

we are getting new information about the search for the missing airlines jet. the search is expanded into the indian ocean. that is after u.s. analysts say pings sent to a satellite hours after last transponder signal likely came from that missing jet. that means it could have ended up thousands of miles from its last confirmed contact over southeast asia. >> took me by surprise. if you are look into the waters off new jersey now we will be looking off the coast of oregon. >> there are also reports coming from u.s. investigators that the jets two communication systems may have been shout

down separately and possibly deliberately by someone in the cockpit. there is also new information about that explosion in new york city that leveled two apartment buildings. no one else is believed missing. the death toll is at 8 with about 70 people injured. investigators think a gas leak triggered the explosion but the source of that leak remains a mystery. it is a high-tech tool designed to keep students safe in the event of a campus emergency. school district here in the bay area is among the first in the nation to have it. the police have obtained the new state of the art campus security system in response to the growing number of school shootings. they will have special computers giving them detailed looks at every square inch of every classroom on campus. >> it gives them information that anyone in the building would see. even more. you wouldn't know where all the cubby holes are.

>> the program could also help guide an officer through school buildings with turn by turn instructions and warnings. police say it's like a video game that is designed to prevent a real life tragedy. fewer teachers are getting lay off notices for the second year in a row. the press democrat reports 20 teaching jobs could be eliminated this fall. but that is well below the 70 pink slips. sunnyvale could be home to the next office complex to make a futuristic statement. developers have started the approval process for a campus designed to look something like the star ship enterprise. take a look at these pictures. it would be located near wolf road. the development would include officers and a fitness center, coffee bar, barbershop and bike repair shop. a traffic alert for drivers

in san jose. three freeway ramps on the 280, 880 interchange downtown will be shut down tonight near the stevens creek exit. they will be closed at 9:00 p.m. and reopen at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. crews will be paving and striping a new roadway east of the ramps. traffic will be redirected on to the new roadway when the ramps reopen. 6:17 is the time. speaking of traffic a look at the commute this friday morning. brian flores in for sal. >> it sounds good to say friday morning. >> doesn't it? >> oh yeah. happy friday guys. happy friday to everyone out there. still traffic not looking too bad out there. obviously with more people getting up there will be more cars on the roadways so that is what you get. you get traffic as you approach the 7:00 hour. taking a look at the san mateo bridge there are reports of a big rig verses two other vehicles at the high-rise. it doesn't appear to be effecting traffic and there is unknown if there is any injuries. it doesn't look like it is effecting traffic. taking a look at the maps now.

this is just expected traffic westbound 580 as you approach 880 as well. there are reports of another vehicle they are blocking at least the two right lanes. unknown if it's an accident or not but it is blocking a couple lanes. again this is normal traffic in the livermore valley. as you head toward the south bay looking pretty good. northbound 101 looking great. 280 looking spectacular. so far so good. and finally taking a look at the bay bridge toll plaza if you have cash, you will be waiting for a little bit. if yo have fast track you will be moving along. still just 20-25 minutes. 6:18 here's steve. >> thank you very much. we do have a little pattern change here today. it will only be one day. and by tomorrow back to sunshine. but we have a combination of low clouds and fog. and high clouds associated with a weak system. that will give us mostly cloudy skies to the north. this system not doing much. but it is definitely enhancing the westerly breeze so we get

more of a cooler pattern. high clouds to the north. that combination will mean temperatures down 5-10 degrees. nothing dramatic but probably close to what we had yesterday. it was warm yesterday. a lot of upper 70s and we'll see the same over the weekend. doesn't look like it will last too much longer but by monday we will start a cool down. today looks cooler. oakland 68. plenty of low clouds over the bay. a lot of that gray there. higher clouds just showing themselves coming into the north bay. especially parts of marin county. 50s on the temps for some or 40s for others. 54 half-moon bay. also sfo stay is at 53. san jose a little cooler at 45. clear skies a little cooler with that fog in place. probably held up into the 50s. plenty of low clouds and high clouds drifting across. look for that to be with us in the morning and clearing out in the afternoon. if you have travel plans down to arizona for spring training.

upper 70s to near 80 for some. nice again on sunday. a little cooler but still okay monday and tuesday. president obama has ordered review of how the u.s. deports people. he says he wants to make immigration enforcement more humane. he sees the pain when families are separated and here in the bay area we have seen many protests against immigration policies. president obama has called for immigration reform but says congress sun willing to make changes. mcdonalds being hit with seven lawsuits over wages that couldment matily effect 30,000 current and former employees. workers in california, new york, and mission claim mcdonalds and its franchise owners don't pay employees everything they are owed. the california lawsuit says employees were not allowed to take breaks when stores were under staffed and hours were removed from their time sheet. danon cutting pack on the amount of sugar used in its

there is now a mystery tied to the battle over the squirrels in berkeley. the city councilman is demanding an explanation from city staff about how 81,000 e- mails from animal rights supporters vanished from inboxes at city hall. those e-mails were isn't to city council members that consider a controversial plan to exterminate the squirrels. the messages urge berkeley city manager, major, and city members to save the squirrel and gophers. huge restoration plan is about to get under way at yosemite national park. park managers released the final plan yesterday for the $55 million project. it calls for the restoration of

native habitats along with a relocation of all development within 100 feet of the river. it also includes new trails and upgraded campgrounds and street parking along the river and new parking lots. final approval is expected in 30 days. san francisco fort mason center went to the dogs last night at an event benefiting the spca. the annual bark and wine ball featured dancing, silent auction, and a chance to meet 49ers corner back chris kohl very. he was presented with a award for his foundation work promoting animal welfare. all proceeds benefited the cinderella fund which helps animals that are not only homeless but sick and injured. jonathan martin says he has just received a new lease on life. >> a team that is ready to get to the top of the mountain. that is what coach harbaugh said to me. we are right there. we are that close. >> martin says the 49ers and

summer through the weekend maybe? >> it will warm up on the weekend. yes. welcome ken. nice to have you here. >> hi, steve. >> low clouds. they came charges in this morning. even though it's not doing much, it will give us a combination of low clouds and higher clouds. mostly cloudy morning here. low clouds. mostly sunny today. a little cooler this morning. especially coast and bay. inland will not be as warm as well. a lot of 70s this week for the coast. not today. 50s and 60s. too much in this westerly breeze. it will clear out of here but it's definitely there. 40s to 50s. some areas have been stuck all morning long due to the cloud cover. westerly or southwest fairfield 13. they've had gusts to 21. oakland a west wind. so there is maybe a hint of a little north for some but it's more of a west wind. a lot of high and mid level clouds and then we will see a break in the afternoon. tomorrow looks nice. spring training might get a few showers today.

there is not a lot to this system but it is there. so fog, sun. mild today. not as warm. a lot of low clouds in place. they will peel back the coast and hang out near the san mateo coast. a little cooler today. 50s and 60s and low 70s. here is brian. >> thank you. weather looking pretty good. so is the traffic on this friday morning. really no major problems out there besides the usual suspect traffic out there. as we look at 680 on sunol southbound as you head toward san jose. 280 and 101 looking good. as we take look at the maps now, highway 4 heading toward 242. this will be a trouble spot as is always the case as you head across. 680 looking pretty good as well. 80 southbound in hercules. hercules san rafael bridge rooking pretty good. 880 on the nimitz freeway. a little bit of slow down there. overall not so bad. and finally the toll plaza starting to stack up now.

unless you have fast track ons outside lanes looking pretty good. still a 25-30 minute drive time to get you from oakland to the san francisco as the metering lights are on. let's go back to the desk. topping our news this hour more than a dozen middle school students could face serious consequences for a sexting scandal that spread into another school district. christina is in brentwood at the school where it all started where it's early but parents and students are certain to have strong reactions to this. >> reporter: yeah i'm pretty sure they will be. this case is very big. when we were talking to police last night, they say more than a dozen boys are involved in this. they know of at least one here that was using inappropriate photos to black male a girl. and that girl told an adult earlier this week about what was happening. that is when an investigator quickly found out the sexting was going on at more than three schools. three middle schools right here

in brentwood. we are also learning over 12 boys were involved in sending and receiving the inappropriate messages. as of last night, police were going through confiscated cell phones and talking with the teenagers and their parents. >> there were still detectives out interviewing students to gather as much information as we can. and at some point decipher all of it and determine what crimes we do have. >> reporter: and there could be possible charges here that include distributing and possessing child pornography but the kids are very young and they could face serious charges. we are told all of them are between the ages of 12-14. again parents will be coming to school this morning. very shocked to hear what is happening here. live in brentwood christina reasondon. firefighters firefighters are watching out for possible flair ups from this morning's huge fire. demolition crews finished their

work allowing firefighters to search for any remaining hot spots from tuesday's fire. tons of twisted metal, burned wood, and sheet rock are all that is left of what was supposed to be the latest apartment complex in the city's mission bay neighborhood. investigators say video and pictures from the public are helping them pinpoint exactly where the fire started. >> and san francisco you have a lot of people with a lot of lectronic devices. there is a lot of things people can put together. >> investigators believe welding may have set off the huge fire. top firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the flames. new this morning a popular airline that is flagged for the low fairs and entertainment captions is pulling out of san jose airport. janine de la vega has been another the airport since 5:00 this morning and talked to virgin american employees that confirm the air lien is leaving. >> reporter: it was a group of flight attendidn'ts and they were not happy about the move.

they told me in an e-mail that the ceo told me it indicates that virgin is hoping to come back. virgin america employees tell me -- [ inaudible ] in an e-mail the coo told staff that san jose operations were not meeting expectations. there was lots of fanfare and excitement last may when they launched service offering daily flights to los angeles. richard branson had anticipated that if business went well here, they would offer more flights but from the start the airline reportedly struggled with ridership and airlines started adding flights and cutting prices. >> i don't like not having as many choices and i love flying out of san jose because it's so much easier than san francisco.

hawaiian airlines will offer daily flights. last night the alameda county water district approved new water restrictions for hundreds of thousands of bay area water users. it effects 330,000 people who live in fremont, newark, anyoneon city. people can only water their lawns once a week through the end of may and twice a week from june to september. and there is a ban of draining and refilling swimming pools. but some people at last nights meeting don't think the restrictions go far enough. >> just cut off all watering of lawns. who gives a hoot about green lawns when we run out of water. >> the new restrictions take effect immediately anyone found in violation could face a fine up to $600. dozens of farmers have received devastating news tied to california's drought. it has warned them they may have to cut out their water

supply if the water shortage crisis does not improve. that bad news could be coming in the next few weeks and the farmers could get a notice on april 1st. >> with that said, we plan to meet with all of them. make sure they have other supplies available. >> most people will either try to rely on ground water on their properties by installing a well or revisiting a well that sort of been abandoned or dormant. >> the water district says 32 county farms would be effected. they make up 5% of the local agricultural business. disturbing case out of solano county where father is behind bars accused of biting off the nose of his one-month- old baby. fairfield police received a frantic call from the child's mother yesterday saying her baby was bleeding. doctors determine the child had a skull fracture, brain

hemorrhage, and a third of the nose severed. investigators cooper bit off his child's nose because he was mad at the baby's crying. a 16-year-old girl has been arrested for selling brownies laced with marijuana to students at hayward high school. officials believe the girl sold the brownies wednesday morning while riding the bus. at least five students got sick. >> she was walking and she passed out. everyone ran up to her. >> the girl who sold the brownies is expected to face charges in juvenile court. investigators say it appears the students that got sick knew the brownies were laced with american. cal tran says it has made the necessary repairs to the new eastern span of the bay bridge. we showed you cracks in some of the welds last may. cal tran has showed us how it has replaced 600 feet of faulty welds with new ones. >> those welds are very good. they pass all the inspections,

they met the code. >> they still need to sandblast the inside of the tower. other finishing touches include adding protective concrete fenders to limit damage if a ship runs into the bridge and installing a 52 story elevator that will allow maintenance crews get all the way to the top of the new tower. reporting on unruly bart passengers. the new transit plan encouraging riders to rat out their fellow passengers without fearing for their lives. >> surprising find after an overnight fire. what crews found inside of a hayward home. >> as we approach the 7:00 hour, traffic starting to pick up. we'll tell you where exactly it is as we look at the east shore freeway. >> most locations are saying either partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. there are a few break there is. but a lot of high clouds and fog.

new this morning. hayward police investigating a large marijuana grow following an overnight house fire. katie utehs is in the neighborhood with what we have learned about the investigation. katie. >> reporter: pamela, just a moment ago narcotic officers drove away with a truck bed full of marijuana plants that they put in boxes. city workers have secured the house. closed the garage.

that upper corner where the power connects to the garage that is where the fire was. it doesn't appear that the wiring was jumped but the strain on the electrical may have caused the fire. the strain that is to grow the marijuana plants inside. narcotic officers could not tell us how many plant plants they removed but it was about three boxes full. they were on scene for nearly two hours. we watched them take boxes inside. snap photos and then remove the plants just moments ago. around midnight someone called 911 to report a roof fire at this home in the 23500 block. apparently no one was home so firefighters broke through the side wall. and once inside they discovered the marijuana plants. pg&e crews responded to turn off the power. police are still investigating the possibility that the people according to marijuana were stealing the electricity but early indications show that may not be the case. and a neighbor who did not want to speak on camera, tells me

she is not surprised that marijuana was found in the home. a group of young people frequent the home but nobody appeared to live here. officers are still on scene and city workers are securing the front doors, the side doors, pay have put plywood over the door where the firefighters broke in. but at this point still an activity investigation and it's unclear who owned the home or who was growing the marijuana. police of course investigating to find out if this was a legal grow or not. live in hayward katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. improving bart safety through a couple of cell phone key strokes. bart is creating a smart phone app that allows riders to text discreet messages to police. the free app encourages passengers to report on unruly riders. the app will allow passengers to up load pictures and send in comments pep it whether also come in spanish and chinese.

as you approach fremont. in the south bay 101 northbound from east san antonio. there was a little bit of a delay there. over all not too bad as you approach 101. 85 looking great as well. same thing on the san mateo bridge. now here is steve. >> thank you, brian. we do have a lot of low clouds in place. napa airport saying fog. it's making a pretty good little push here inland. not everywhere is cloudy. so the combination of those two equal cooler, cooler. it's a weak system. very light rain to the north. low clouds. cooler. more of a westerly breeze. high clouds to the north. it will clear out by later this afternoon. but it set the stage for a cooler pattern today. high pressure will build in. it will not be out ragously warm but it will be above average. probably topping out saturday. still nice on sunday. a little cooler yesterday.

the offshore breeze we had has sent temperatures to 70 and upper 70s has been replaced with a westerly breeze and that fog comes roaring back. go 68 in oakland. but they will rebound tomorrow. some of that low cloud deck. so the combination of those two are giving us 40s and 50s. some areas have been 55. west, southwest fairfield 21. i usually don't mention fairfield unless it's summer and we watch for the delta breeze there. but it definitely has kicked up. west at oakland as well. you can see the high mid level clouds over us. they will be with us for awhile. plans for spring training today could be a little iffy. some hit and miss traffic. 24 in tahoe. 35 reno. 43 in ukiah. 61 sacramento. temperatures kind of held up for a little bit of that cloud cover. this is a weak little system.

fog, sun, mild. not as warm as yesterday. a little cooler and breezy especially coast and bay. that will i woman more 50s and 60s. still 70s inland but i think things are held down to the north. so temperatures still mild, still warm but just not the upper 70s to near 80. a little warmer toward the santa clara valley because i'll have a little bit more sun. 50s and 60s coast. upper 60s or low 70s. looks nice on sunday. we'll see cooler pattern. >> thank you, steve. auto safety group says general motors is greatly under stating the numb of people who have died in accidents related to a recent recall. now gm says 12 people have died in accidents connected to a faulty switch but the center for auto safety say there have been 303 deaths. gm admits it knew abouts switch problem back in 2001 but did not order the recall until last

welcome back to the morning news. 6:54 is the time. people on board a u.s. airways flight say they panicked as the plane made an emergency landing. now the jet blew a tire just as it was taking off. the crew set up for an emergency landing. but when the planes nose wheel toucheddown the landing gear collapsed. passengers began to cry and scream as the plane skidded down the runway. that is when the crews called on the passengers to evacuate down the emergency slides. one passenger videoed herself during those moments. >> oh my gosh my plane just crashed. we are evacuating the plane. >> two passengers asked for medical help. once they were off the jet but there were no serious injuries reported. the faa now investigating one caused that nose wheel to collapse. >> two bay area men are facing bomb making and weapons charges after shocking discoveries on both sides of the bay. the first was made in a quiet neighborhood in pacifica not

far from the sharp park golf course. federal and local investigators say they found 600 explosives and barrels found of bomb making chemicals. two children live at that home. and neighbors say they are stunned. >> i heard one of the officers say how many pounds do you think is in there? and i went oh my god. there is a lot there. i came in and told my husband i said he had enough stuff there to blow out half the neighborhood. >> her neighbor faces several explosive charges along with child endangerment. across the bay police also arrested shawn gunther. they found explosives, drugs, and guns in his home in san pablo. investigators are still searching for the for a motive but they do not believe the two men were planning any kind of terrorist attack. family and friends are mourning the loss of three brothers gunned down in separate shootings in the east bay. nelson hamilton was shot to death near his home on saturday

night. his death comes after his older brother earl was shot to death outside of a pinole bar in february. another brother was killed almost three years ago near a neighborhood market in richmond. five alleged gang members have been arrested in the pinole shooting. president obama is hosting the irish prime minister at the white house today in an early st. patrick's day celebration. they will start the day with a meeting in the oval office. they will then attend the traditional st. patrick's day lunch at the capitol. in the evening they will host a st. patrick's day reception at the white house. downtown san francisco will be decked out in green tomorrow with the annual st. patrick's day parade. steve has been predicting more than 100,000 people are expected. this year's parade includes the first ever contingent from the san francisco lgbt private
