good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. a group of bay area students is being questioned for their veaged involvement in a -- allegeled involvement in a sexting scandal at four east bay schools. our reporter talked to the superintendent and joins us live from brentwood. >> reporter: good afternoon. we got our hands on the letter sent home to parents explaining what happened but it doesn't explain the full extent of what police say was actually happening here at adams middle school and three other schools in the area. blackmailed by cell phone. a teenaged boy at j. douglas is accused of using inprone appropriate photos to coerce her into doing acts on campus. >> you don't want this in our community. you work hard to live in a community where you are protected from those as much as you can and when it comes to the forefront, it's disturbing. >> reporter: police say at least 12 boys were sending and

receiving inappropriate photos at the middle schools. the students involved range in age from 12 to 14. >> i think as adults we all have the responsibility to continue to remind children that their online interactions have consequences. >> reporter: the superintendent has handed down severe discipline to the teens. they are working to prevent this from happening again. >> as we all know in the cyber world, once that information is out, it's nearly impossible to get it back. >> reporter: that's why police and the school district are encouraging parents to talk about their children about how they use their cell phones and the internet. >> like the old adage goes, it takes a community to raise a children. we're only as prepared as we

educate ourselves scblferrms . >> reporter: police tell me it's too early to say whether the students will face charges. they still have to go through the cell phones to see what was shared. back to you. >> thank you. a teenaged father is behind bars in solano county accused of biting off the nose of his 1- month-old baby. 18-year-old joshua cooper faces child cruelty charges. fairfield police received a frantic call from the child's mother yesterday saying her baby was bleeding. doctors determined the child had a skull fracture, brain hemorrhage and a third of the nose severed. the baby is currently at oakland children's hospital in stable condition. investigators say cooper bit his child's nose off because he was mad at the baby's crying. arraignment was delayed for a man accused of trying to run down two san francisco police officers over the weekend. 50-year-old jeffrey ruano is charged with assault on a police officer. he was arrested in san jose

following a chase down the peninsula. police say they opened fire on ruano when they tried to run him down during a car stop. one of the officers was wounded in the arm but it's not clear if ruano or the officer's partner shot him. ruano's attorney said the prosecution has not provided him with enough information during the discovery rules. >> he's being made the fall guy for the officer shooting the other officer and he detracting the situation to that. i think the evidence will clearly show he didn't assault anyone, he didn't shoot anyone. >> ruano is scheduled to return to court on tuesday for his arraignment. a series of violent crimes has now led to an indictment of more than a dozen suspected street gang members. they were indicted yesterday by a federal grand jury on racketeering and conspiracy charges for a series of violent crimes including a 2011 shooting death.

according to the san francisco cogicle, the 14 defendants are members of the seranos gang. two of them are accused of murder and could face the death penalty if convicted. oakland police may be planning to scrap a system that detects when shots have been fired within city limits. according to reports, the shot spotter system costs the oakland police department $264,000 a year. the system maps the location when shots are fired and sends an alert to available officers. but police say neighbors already call when they hear gunfire and the funds could be better spent on other crime- fighting tools, including a police helicopter. hayward police say immature marijuana plants pulled from a home this morning could be worth up to a million dollars. around midnight, firefighters responded to a roof fire at a

home in the 23500 block of stone call avenue. they broke through a side door to gain access to the home and stumbled upon the plant. officers removed several boxes full of plants to the surprise of neighbors. >> i'm pretty surprised. we never see anyone come in or out of the house. it seems pretty quiet. it's pretty shocking to hear that our neighbors were growing that. >> other neighbors say they are not surprised. they've watched people come and go. nobody appeared to live there. officers are working to find out who owns the property. this afternoon, three days after that massive building fire in san francisco's mission bay neighborhood, firefighters are still watching out for possible flareups. this is a live view of what's left of the burnt-out building. late yesterday, demolition crews finished their work allowing firefighters to search for any remaining hot spots. investigators believe welding equipment may have set off the

huge fire. two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the flames. san mateo police say a car struck an 8-year-old girl during morning dropoff at a school today sending her to the hospital. it happened at horrall elementary on oceanview avenue. the 38-year-old driver was cited at the scene for being unlicensed and was released. police are working closely with the school and appears that the driver did not follow morning dropoff procedures, the child's injuries are described as non- life-threatening. commuter crashes are creating -- computer crashes are creating longer lines than usual at the dmv. they went down yesterday and this morning. customers lined up out ther to at some offices such as this one on claremont avenue in oakland. some say they were just trying to do routine things.

>> the second time this happened. last year, the same thing. the same thing happened. >> the dmv says the computer problems are not a regular thing and that they are trying to figure out what went wrong and fix it. the ride sharing companies lyft and uber plan to expand insurance coverage. until now, it covered drivers only until they had a customer in the car. it will cover them between passenger pickups. the move is seen as a criticism from cab drivers and regulators. a driver is accused of hitting and killing a girl on newary year eve -- new year's eve. her family is suing. in a month and a half, virgin american will stop

service at san jose apartment. janine de la apartment -- airport. janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: on may 14th, virgin american will shut down the ticket counter and stop offering daily flights to los angeles. >> it's sad because it takes out one extra airline to pick from. hopefully others make up the routes they were flying. >> reporter: virgin american launched service out of san jose less than a year ago. there was a lot of fanfare and excitement then. british billionaire and founder richard branson was there to show off the plane's entertainment system in funky purple lighting, even saying he hoped to expand here. but the numbers were not adding up. >> ridership was going up. it's a highly competitive route. we had a lot of service between here and l.a. >> reporter: virgin american released this statement saying,

crisis in ukraine have failed to result in a standoff over the peninsula. john kerry met with the foreign minister for six hours in london. kerry said he offered ideas how russia can respect the soernernty. but the -- sovereignty but the prime minister said there won't be decisions made until after sunday, after the vote. kerry said the international community will not recognize the outcome of sunday's vote. it's been a week since flight 370 disappeared. there are several theories about what happened to the jetliner with 239 people on board. while investigators look into the possibility of piracy, search groups are still looking for debris from a possible crash. as andrew spencer reports, new information may put the plane over the indian ocean, well away from the original search area near the gulf of thailand. >> reporter: a u.s. officials

us. if i stretch the water vapor satellite vision back for you, you can see that the storm is well to the north of us. we're catching just the tail end here. sadly, not going to pick up any rain out of this. but it did beef up the onshore breeze and did bring back the low clouds. that's what we're dealing with today. today, partly cloudy and cooler and thafer about sums it up -- that about sums it up. the onshore breeze will be with us throughout the afternoon, especially along the coast. begin to see a turnaround in time for the weekend. temperatures are gonna rebound with the ridge of high pressure strengthening over the bay area for saturday as well as sunday. temperatures will warm back in the 70s and some of us may actually get to near record warmth. for the afternoon today, widespread upper 50s along the coastline. mid-60s to mid-70s for the bay. 66 san francisco today. 70 for vallejo. heading into the inner east bay, temperatures will warm in the low 70s for areas like pleasanton, livermore, concord down to the south bay, 63 for san jose, 74 for morgan hill.
